Heya, Im still a bit new to rooting my phone seeing as this is my first Android.
A few months ago I got interested in rooting to see what I could do, so I stumbled on galaxys2root.com and managed to root my phone with the zedomax stock kernal. No big deal. Well now that ICS is out I am wanting to update to a new kernal with a mod. So I asked a friend of mine what I should go with and he gave me a few options seeing as he is quite knowledgeable on this subject.
I managed to get Siyah kernal running with the latest CM9 nightly, Im pretty sure I screwed up something because after everything rebooted pretty much everything on my phone crashes. I can make and receive calls just fine and connect to wireless networks, but I cant use sms/mms and about 90% my apps crash and when in CWM It wont let me connect to mass storage.
Can anyone direct me to the best way to get my phone back to stock/near stock so I can re-root or try to install the kernal/mod again?

Do you know if you did a full wipe before you installed cm9?

Whatever you do. Please do not go back to galaxys2root.com ever again. That site has caused many problems to those attempting to root their phone. On another note. Take a look at the development section of this forum and become familiar with the stickies. There will be threads on how to bring your phone back to stock. Good luck and happy flashing!

For future reference, you can set Google to sync your personal info when you first configure your phone, or through settings. And if you go into the Contacts application, in settings you can select import/export, and then export to sdcard. That can be reimported from the sdcard after a wipe, so now you have two ways to save contacts. Neither requires root.

Hi. This is the first time I will root and flash a phone. Of course I can't use my phone during the process itself, but what about after I root? I am a busy person and most likely I won't be able to root then flash in the same day.
How long does the root process, and then the flash process, take about? Estimates?
After I root, I can take and receive calls and SMS right away right? No waiting to do other things first? How about after I flash? When I get done flashing, can I start to use my phone again?
I am just nervous that it will take so long and I have to go for a meeting or my boss or student needs to talk to me, etc...
Thanks, LGnationrc
After you root and/or flash ROM. Assuming you did a full wipe, you'll have to set the phone up.
Basically the touch the Android robot and sign in to your Google account.
Phone and SMS should work right after that.

Just remember to backup your contacts or remember to sync it to Google Contacts before you start (go to sync in settings, choose your account and tap "Sync Contacts".
ok thanks guys. I can't find this "thanks" button but I give you guys one each!
I think I will just do a root first, before I get into flashing. Rooting seems easy and fast. I have everything really to go, I just want to read up and get more information before I dive in.
After I am all done, flashing too, I basically want a faster phone (no more lag!) and I want to be able to run skype (I can't with my LG Optimus X2) and I want to remove that stupid and loud shutter sound when i record once and for all. Maybe I can free up some battery life too. I only get about 10 days before she is shut off dead. I only have about 20 apps. Maybe I can remove all the build crap apps too.
When I finally have the time to do it, I will let you guys know how it went. And report any problems I have if any. Thanks, lgnationrc
Just to clarify, the rooting process itself will not change the usability of your phone afterward. Until you choose to flash a custom ROM you can run your device with it's stock ROM as long as you like. In my case, I used a clean rooting method (not a one-click method) and it took 10 minutes to complete. I did spend quite a bit of time reading up on the subject beforehand.

Ok, whats the difference between oneclick method and a "clean" root method? Why a "root" vs. a oneclick method?
That is fine. I just want to get the process started. As long as I can take this in steps and still be able to use the phone in between steps.
What is the percentage of chance that I brick my phone trying to do this?
Thanks, lgnationrc

Both are rooting methods. With some devices there are apps designed to root you at the click of a button. Sometimes this is great and sometimes it can cause problems. With my phone, HTC G2, I used a process that takes a tad bit longer, but I was able to see what was going on each step of the way. My point was simply that rooting doesn't usually take long at all. If you already have a good method in mind stick with it and don't let me confuse you. And all this said - I did use a program called z4root to root my old CLIQ and it worked great. If you do find a one click method just be sure to do your homework on it, and be sure it's not causing more harm than good.
And I can't give you a percentage in terms of bricking your phone. If I were you I would just read instructions, then re read, read the posts by other users... read as much as you can. If you don't understand something, do a Google search. And when you feel comfortable, go ahead and do it. Flashing a custom ROM is simple and really does breathe new life into your phone. Good luck.

Good news. I rooted my LG last night. No problems, went fast. I will wait to flash a few weeks before I feel really comfortable and read as much as I can.
But one problem I have right now is, I can't delete the factory apps. I have Astro file manager and I try to delete facebook but I keep getting "Error deleting" message.
And I am trying to figure out how to remove that stupid shutter sound when I record video. I guess there is a law in Hong Kong (thats where I bought the phone) that before you record there has to be a loud shutter sound. Nothing works. I can't figure it out. Any ideas?
I also haven't backed my phone up yet. I have to get the software still.

You need a root enabled file manager. Try es file explorer from the market. You have to enable it in the settings.

First thing I would do is flash Clockworkmod recovery. This will allow you to create a backup (nandroid) of your device in its current state. This way, if any of the changes you might make cause unwanted side effects, you can always restore. If you download Rom Manager in the Market, it should contain the recovery for your device.
Astro will not allow you read/write access to the system. I would install ES File Explorer. It's a free file manager app on the Market, and it will allow you access to system files, where you'll be able to do things such as remove the shutter sound.
You have to be careful deleting system applications from your ROMs. Some are necessary. Facebook is not, obviously... but you're better off leaving the stock system apps alone and flashing a custom ROM where you'll have many more options. Also, FYI, Titanium Backup is useful for creating user app/data backups, and also in that is allows you to freeze apps which essentially makes them unavailable... however, they can also be easily restored (defrosted) if need be. Happy flashing.
I am running a Milestone X2 and up until recently have had no wifi on any custom rom. Since the new soak test Eclipse v2.2 uses the new /418 kernal and now wifi works. Is it possible to take this and move it to MIUI?
No & miui update is stalled big time.
skwoodwiva, thank you for such an easy answer. I love MIUI it is my favorate ROM, but I would like wifi to work .
eclipse mms?
What's up people, quick question about the eclipse2.2 on milestone x2. However first allow me to respect XDA community, I've been though alot in the background with you guys. Then respect to Nitro for eclipse, it's amazing! My question is about the mms on the 2.2, will there be an update to fix it or is it a sacrafice I'm gonna have to eat? This is the first Rom I have 'noobly' been able to use and if I have to give up sending pics or long messages I'll do it before I go back to slow, laggy stock. I did read that it wouldn't work but then I read people's replies that they have no problems. I could've done something off with the install but everything else works perfectly. Thanks to anyone with feedback or help, it's truly appreciated!
Yes, unfortunately MMS will not work if you are not with Verizon. Nitro uses Verizon's basebase information and strips other stuff so that data can work. This does not work for me so I have no idea how to actually make it work. I have nTelos Wireless which is a small carrier based out of VA and my MMS does not work.
I hope this helps.
I am also on NTelos in Norfolk,VA, so no hope for us huh? Well that blows. I've had so many stressful nights thinking I've lost my phone doing all this flashing so I'm trying to be content, but I've read so many posts and you guys always get me out of whatever grave I dig. I think now that I have the sbf process down I might try for CM7 or miui tonight. Thanks for the confirmation twobrare, I've read allot of your posts too so I def believe you.

Ok, I too have ntelos in lynchburg, luckily there was a guy in a phone store that hooked me up for 10$then I still had to use gosmspro for the pix to send properly. He told me he spent months to find what he found online, but he found it...online. he also password protected it so when I transferred the custom app that I bought off him it won't install when I put it back on the SD card. Through my backups that I moved from my computer was the only way to get it to work TB will no longer back up and restore the app. Any sugestionsto get the mms working would be great. Or if someone could tell me how to pull the info off of a phone I still have my desirefrom ntelos. I would post here if I found a fix...thanx.

I found an easier solution for the mms fix, and it's really easy if your on the evo 4g. Download the reloaded.44 magnum ROM somehow it has the right apks or something to get the mms to work right off the bat you don't need to do anything else. But if your like me, you still flash. So, download 4 shared on the market (free) search for, apn manager ,download to phone, go into apn manager and hurt the backup button, it creates a file on your sd card and saves it there, flash another ROM you like, again ,4shared, apn manager, open apn manager hit the restore button only, done. Works every time for me, good luck.

I know that you guys are going to tell me to search through the thread. I'm actually not a noob I just lurk a lot.
I flashed SpeedROM 4.0 and now I am unable to send mms messages (redundant) while I'm connected to my WiFi. I searched all over that thread to find a fix and all I came up with was to install Android 4 ICS Messaging SMS over the Play Store. tried it. it came up with an error "Duplicate Provider Authority" Any help?
I also found out that there's no notification of messages on the lock screen nor does it chime/vibrate/notify when you receive a message from an unknown number

It's a general problem with the amaze on ICS, it's widespread, so don't expect a fix anytime soon.
It never happened on the stock ics with sense 3.6. If I knew how to do all of this stuff I would help. My best guess is that the answer is in the stock ics ROM. I have my stock backup if anyone needs it for study

Do a battery pull... That will drop all the power out of the phones radios and force them to reset. Thus fixing mms hopefully

You do realise I'm on stock ICS right? If you read the wifi thread that's in this very sub forum, you'd see it's not just me that has the issue, many members here as well, go over to tmo's forum and check the ICS bug list thread, you'll see a damn long list of others there as well.

my guess is on the kernel needing to be flashed/reflashed for the mms/wifi thing. as to the other issues, no clue. have you tried running stock ics yet?
Yeah I had stock ics for a while before I switched. I don't know how to flash the kernal though. Honestly if I knew how, I'd just put stock ics mms.apk in the.zip but I tried that already and it canceled the install. Don't know how to do that either

"Duplicate Provider Authority" means that you are trying to install something that the phone already has system flags dedicated for(this explanation could be a little better).. Speedrom already has the MMS app, use a root tool, titanium backup - something to remove mms.apk from the system/app folder, then you will be able to install the one in the market -- not that that is a sure fire fix.. but one thing at a time. Try that, that is the only reason you couldn't install.
So he wanted me to root his Samsung Galaxy SII and I did that and threw the first ICS ROM I saw on there. So I flashed Neutrino ROM on his phone and it worked fine and I noticed that he had no contacts.
Well I was like crap! And went to put it into recovery and restore the nandroid backup I had and it was bricked when I turned it off and I couldn't turn it on.
So I eventually fixed it and it's on some stock firmware but he still doesn't have any contacts.
I copied his entire Internal SD card to his computer, is there any way to recover the contacts?
I only learned after I deleted his phone that he had all of his contacts stored on the phone itself and not through google or his SIM.
I think the answer is "impossible" but if there is any chance I could fix his phone that would be cool.
' fix his phone ' is not the right term in my opinion.
What you could try is just doing an advanced restore of the nandrois backup with the data while using a STOCK rom but seeming as though I've never had this problem I'm not sure that it will work.

I tried to reboot into recovery and the phone stopped working and became bricked. I finally flashed a ROM on there with Odin but now the back and search buttons don't work and he can't make or receive phone calls.
I know it was the wrong ROM but I can't find the right one either especially for Odin restores.
Is your brother more physically developed than you? If so I recommend buying him a new phone and going around all his friends and getting their contact numbers. If not, pretend like he never gave you the phone and call him crazy.
Honestly, your explanation of the problem, like most threads, sucks. Nobody can help you unless they know exactly what you did, just try and restore the backup you made. You made it in CWM right? If you can't make or receive phone call though, that sounds like a worse problem. Wipe the phone and flash a stock ROM, that's the best advice anyone can give with the information you've supplied.
If contacts were synchronised with google you should be able to download them from google account. Hope this help.

Hi there. I have a couple of questions to ask about my GalaxyS3. GT-19300. Android version 4.1.1. Baseband version 19300BUDL12. Kernel version 3.0.31-256827.
Firstly after what seems like days & days of 'research' I finally plucked up the courage to root my phone, hoping to rid myself of all the bloatware. For a complete newbie like me it was quite daunting really but once I did it, it seemed fairly easy enough? I have installed Nobloat but have not yet used it as I have a few issues that I need resolving?
Anyway since rooting I have downloaded TitaniumBackup & hopefully backed up my files? It took me hours & hours to find out how/where to save it to my external sd card? I am still unsure if I've managed to back up absolutely everything ie; texts & so on? Here is my first question, I have tried to sync my backup to my dropbox but while its 'uploading' it suddenly stops & says stopped because of 'internal error'? What does this mean & why is it happening & what can I do about it?
My next question is since I've rooted my phone, it as gone very very slow, in everything it does, even in my messages it shows the number for 5seconds or so before it actually changes to the contacts name? Is there a reason why my phone is so slow?
My next question is, I think, maybe related. I have ZDbox installed & now when I go to clear/use task killer, my phone reboots? Is there e reason for this & have I done something wrong or am I missing something silly?
I know there are quite a few question here & I have looked & used the search button but I obviously can't see for looking & I have spent a large chunk of time researching/looking for answers?
Anyhow thank you for reading my many questions & hopefully someone can point me in the right direction? It is quite daunting messing with your expensive phone knowing thjat you could potentially 'brick' it!! :fingers-crossed:
Regards Jay
Can't answer all your questions but tb doesn't back up your texts. There are other apps that back up texts without needing root. It only backs up apps and app data. With regards to your dropbox sync, you might have put in the wrong login details? I used it for a while and it was fine.
As for the phone slowing down, try backing everything and do a complete wipe.

Thanks for the quick response:good:. I shall look into the apps that can backup/save texts. I never thought to look there to be honest!!
With regard to my Dropbox, I definitely have the correct log in details, like I say, it gets to about 30% uploaded then comes up with 'internal error'!?
Also would that be a factory reset when you mention complete wipe? Would I then need to download Titanium again to restore my phone to near enough what it is now?
Jay
Back up everything you can, put it safe somewhere else (external sd or pc). Go into recovery and do a full wipe (cache, data, dalvik cache) and reboot. You'll have to set everything up again (login details and etc), but seems like it's the only option afaik.

I have only just plucked up the courage to root my phone!!!!! never mind 'flash a new rom' !!!!!!
I'm starting to go crazy with looking at all the various information for hours on end & seemingly getting nowhere & no closer to flashing a new rom?
Now then, funny thing is, my phone has mysteriously gone back to being fairly fast again?? Again I don't know what's happened to revert it back? So at least that's one of my problems sorted :good:
Oh & my other thread about my missing photo as been resolved, I had backed my phone up quite a while back & found it in some old files on an external hard drive, yipeee!!
