How to install apps? - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

I´ve just got my Nook Tablet and I´ve created my account. I´ve coppied a moboplayer, firefox and solid explorer APKs to the SD card but when I try to view these files on the system browser they don´t show up. Also, I cannot find the play store anywhere.
The question is how do I install these apps?
- gmail
- moboplayer
- firefox
- solid explorer
- some launcher that reproduces the standard android buttoms (back, home, etc)

If you take the time to read the forum quides you will be able to.
1st: You have to root.

Oh, how I miss that days of the one click root.
I can already see that the latest firefox version is not compatible with the stock nook tablet (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1735861)
I´m guessing the AppMenu apk won´t work either unless it´s rooted, right.

You need to use the external sd card root method. After that you will be able to get the full google store gmail etc. Some apps in the store might say not compatible, if that happens google the (app name) .apk, download, and install package. I also recomend having home manager/quick switcher and installing another launcher ( go launcher or adw launcher) then you will have one screen native b&n nook home and another that is an android tablet.

Pretty much what everyone else said: need to root first, then using the tablet, try to download and install, "NTHiddenSettings" and Nook will prompt you to enable external install
Make sure you read all the instructions and warnings prior to attempting any modifications, as it does technically void warranty.
That said, the root tools on this forum are effective and have really helped unlock the potential of my Tablet.

If you don't want to root then use Cwm7 on sdcard. You pretty much have a straightforward racket w/o camera.
I'be done both though right now have the internal cm7.

And do a little research on the brand and speed of the SD Card too. Some work great, some don't.

Old darts right. it seems that My does play well with class 10cards and sometimes Sandisk. Most people seem to do better with class 4 cards.

Almost all working except...

I have almost everything working now on my rooted tablet with the GoLauncher.
After a lot of effort, I got the SlideIT keyboard installed and working.
But, The Nook Reader (from the Market) does not work. I can access a reader that works on my B&N books by going through Library, opening the book, and then using "Reader" to read it. But I can't find "Reader" in the app list to make a direct access to it on my GoLauncher desktop. Reader.apk is also in /system/app. Is it the Nook viewer? When I start that, it does nothing.
Similarly, QuickOffice_Viewer.apk is installed in /system/app, but I don't see it in my app list.
Is there a way to turn on wifi location services?
Also, in the Android Market, many many apps are listed as being incompatible with the Nook Tablet, even though they work on my Color Nook (albeit with CyanogenMod). For example, the free angry birds, which works perfectly on the NT when I moved it from my NC. And I had to get Evernote and LastPass from the B&N market.
Finally, the Nook Tablet suffers from the same anaemic maximum volume as the NC did. Nook Color Tweaks fixes the problem on my NC, but does not work on the NT. Does anyone know some other way to goose up the volume settings? The inbuilt controls are maximized.
Personally I havent found a way to get reader to work other than the way described by yourself.
As far as I know the "incompatible" apps thing is due to the ppi being 169 rather than a more common 160. Rather than changing it, I have just found it easier to copy things from one of my other android devices. Or you can see if the items in question are in the Amazon Appstore.
Currently the only way I know of to get the volume up is with a paid app...that I cant seem to recall the name of. If you search the forums for it I'm sure you'll find it.

Thats the app i was talking about, thought it was paid only. Guess I've been proven wrong on that front, which is a good thing .
The Android Market says Volume+ is not compatible with The NT. I installed it my NC, but I can't find where the apk is installed, to grab it.
What is it called, and where is it installed to?
Thanks

[Q] NOOK for Android by B&N app

I rooted my NT a couple of weeks ago using Indirect's method, I also did the OTA block. I've thought about re-rooting to delete the bloatware, but still want to be able to access the B&N store as I do like to read and to be able to purchase more e-books. I tried installing the lastest NOOK for Android by B&N app from the Android Market, but it won't open - I see the icon in my launcher, but nothing happens when I touch it. Anybody have any thoughts?
Had no problems doing this with my NC w/ CM7 - hoping that somebody figures that out soon for the NT
Thanks ~ G
You don't need the Nook for Android app, as the stock reader/store does the same thing.
I'm also fairly certain that the nook app itself doesn't work (probably by design) on the NT, since you have the default reader/store.

Yup. Found out the hard way myself. Just uninstall and hit the N button when you want to use the Nook app.

I tried to install the Nook app and it doesn't work for me either.
Blocking the update broke my B&N store. I used the method that said the store will not be affected. I was already a customer at the B&N store and wanted to continue to buy things, but B&N is making this way too difficult.
I too have the same problem. After rooting and preventing updates, I am unable to connect to B&N. Anyone have any suggestions to solve this problem?

[Q] Starting from scratch - what is layest greatest root option

Previously rooted with Zookandnergy. Had to reset. It still shows B&N Nook Tablet USB Device (twice) under Disk Drives in Device Manager.
What is the latest greatest root option. Do I even need to do the adb driver install or can that be bypassed? Suggestions?
I don't think there really is any "latest and greatest" method ... either you go with Snowball mod (which removes as much of the B&N framework as possible) or you go with N&Z (which gives options from debloating ... i.e. just removing B&N apps). Personally, I used N&Z over a month ago and haven't had any reason to do anything else. I have Google Apps running, plus the Amazon Market, and am very happy with ADW launcher. I did install the SystemUI.apk that has the ICS buttons and remaps the book icon to a home icon. I'll be content with that until CM9 alphas/betas are released.
Edit: oh, and the FAQ has several links on how to deal with driver/device manager issues.
Seems like my big issue is there is no browser icon after resetting. Can't find any way to get to internet.
What exactly did you end up doing to reset? Erase/deregister? Magic SD card?
erase/deregister. What I have on the screen now is BOOKS NEWSTAND MOVIES MUSIC APPS. There is also a white bar the spans the top of these. The n button appears to just realign me back to the home screen but i don't get the white buttons that popo up.
At this point, I would recommend doing the Magic SD card too if you can. I believe that Erase/deregister cleans the /data/ folder, and the Magic SD card will clean /system/. It sounds from the behavior that you have something tweaked in your SystemUI.apk. You could just replace that with the stock one, but I would recommend starting fresh just in case you installed anything else that modified /system/.
OK, and what is (where) the Magic SD card?
Here
so there is no other alternative to accessing the stock browser?
None that I know of. You could try pulling it from the restore zip and reinstalling maybe.

Honestly, the stock browser sucks. I installed Dolphin HD browser as recommended by many members of this forum and never looked back. Dolphin has tabbed browsing, easy bookmarks and a quick access page which makes it very similar to the Chrome browser I use on my laptop. The stock browser is like using one of the original IE browsers.

Think I'll opt for Magic SD. Any risk of it updating to 1.4.1? (came with 1.4.0 stock thankfully)
It is possible, but if you root and block OTAs right away, you should be safe.
One thing I forgot to mention earlier, I think Snowball mod incorporates the white-on-white menu fix ... that is nice. I haven't done that on mine, I've just lived with it.

He's trying to root and cannot get to the stock browser, so another browser isn't an option.
Sorry, just realized I didn't answer your question. As mr welch said, none that I know of. Also, given that the procedure for starting from scratch is so well documented now and should only take 30-60 minutes, I would recommend you start over as well since you seem to be having some issues with your current setup.

There are many posts on these forums about rooting 1.4.0 and 1.4.1. I suggest doing as I did and reading the various posts and then deciding on what will work best for you. I am currently rooted on 1.4.1, not OTA blocked, have access to Google Amazon B&N markets, can sideload from the browser ( using newest nthiddensettings.apk) and use android wonder machine to sideload.

Pardon me the questions but for you what's the difference between 1.4.1 and 1.4.0? are the fixes/changes notables? in few words why will i want to update to 1.4.1? advantages? i have been wondering this for long lol and i have read DeanGibson's thread but i see some people have a bit of trouble with the process.

I assume you are copying the restore file to the card? Just use your Nook. Put it in the root directory, and one you restore, make sure you delete or rename the file so you don't restore again on accident.

[request]Original Nook shortcut bar and nook apps on CM7

Does anyone have the original Nook app bar (the one that pops up when u hit the N button) running on CM7 and the original Library/Friends/Shop/etc apps? or know where to get them? or how to get that bar running on CM7?
I don't think you can. If you like that stuff it might be best to stay with stock.

Reading a bit more, seems they may be system apps. When TB backup'd i didn't realize that they didn't back up, they showed up as app icons in the app tray so figured they would be just apps. I didn't do a system backup. may restore pre-cm7 backup and see if i can't get them back'd up or pulled out or something. Of course there are alternatives to the reader, but I like the nook friends, and the reader. The nook app is pretty good, and I switched to CoolReader...but I guess I feel that it would be nice to have my cake AND eat it too...hehehe. It was/is a nifty little app bar.
It would be great to know if the stock youtube app with HD support would work as well.

The normal YouTube app from the Android Market supports HQ video formats and HD playback.
Gah, sorry, meant netflix
Others have tried this - it won't play.

It's my understanding that the stock netflix and the marketplace one stream the same quality, the marketplace one however will be more up to date

I tried to get the reader working. I copied it to /system/apps and changed permissions but no dice.
I didn't decompile to take a close but I reckon it'll take some work to get it to function properly. I may look at it later; if anybody has some words of wisdom, I'm all ears.
until then, it's aldiko for me

The menu you are referring to its the file home.apk. That is the original home launcher on the book tablet. You can back it up with titanium backup but it will act glitchy since you cannot restore the reader app correctly with titanium backup. I guess it would be possible to save the files and copy them over and install them when cm7 is released with the sd card fix. I did install nook app for Android and was able to access my library with no problem.
Any reason why you would want the Stock Reader? I mean FBreader does just fine for reading books on I don't see the point of having the stock reader unless you just want the Book icon on the status bar.

I'd like to see if my Time and Wired magazines subscriptions would work under the stock app (they worked on the stock ROM). The market version won't allow them. After some research it seems certain magazines are tied to Nook devices and not just the Nook android app.

I like the nook friends, the reader app, and the shop. I'm using coolreader which I like now though..lol. the scroll app bar at the bottom was nice too. Also, when showing the nook to friends who are considering it's its nice to be able to show them a before and after..easier to explain than.."this isn't actually what u will get out of the box"..showing them what it will look like on the UI side of things is better..feel like I'm misrepresenting by showing them cm7 instead..lol..so if I had the actual apps and home that I could switch to,it would make it better for a selling point..but if not possible..I wont loose sleep over it

This thread is probably dead but
If you made cwm backup b4 cm7 as suggested look in /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/*******
******* is the name given to the backup you made of your stock nt. Look at system.ext4.tar and you will find your /system/apps/
if you find you also need the data for them to operate correctly look in data.ext4.tar.
7zip will open these on your pc.
good luck
any luck on this? I too prefer the snappiness and overall feel/performance of CM7, but miss the stock reader app.
Err. Have you tried simply using GoLauncher, and then having it set to open up the "dock" when you press the n button? 'cause then you can just use the background image and icons provided by framework-res.apk, and make it look like stock menu and whatnot. I've done it before with golauncher so it should work.
I second the kids read me books. My wife made me go back to the stock rom as she didn't like the fact we bought 10 or so read me books that did not work with the regular Android Nook version. I'll give it a try and let you know if it works.

Root is root. There's only 1 "kind" of root, though there are several methods of rooting.
It is really easy to root borh Color and Tablet. Once rooted you can add apps to your heart's content!
You donät need to install an alternative operating system (CM7/9/10). It's perfectly all right to stay in the Nook original OS and just add the apps.
I did the 4.7 root to one, so I was just wondering if I really need to go any further. This is my first dealings with apps and I really don't know what I need to do to get apps easily and cheaply. What I think I got is a way to get apps from somewhere other than BN store. If that is all I want do I really need cm's?
No you don't need anything else just to get apps. Side load if you've already got the apk or get them from Google or Amazon or wherever you want.

Thanks! I will keep looking for apps. I did hit a problem when I downloaded and app and it said format unkown. I had unknown sources checked so I am not sure what the problem is. I then went to my root card and it had amazon store app and it said the same thing on that. Kinda wierd.
I got this to work! Downloaded it anew and installed!
