[Q] Recommendations - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

I have 2 16gb Nook tabs and an 8gb color. I guess I am looking to be able to put apps from different places on them so what kind of roots would be recommended for these Nooks? Thanks

Root is root. There's only 1 "kind" of root, though there are several methods of rooting.

It is really easy to root borh Color and Tablet. Once rooted you can add apps to your heart's content!
You donät need to install an alternative operating system (CM7/9/10). It's perfectly all right to stay in the Nook original OS and just add the apps.

I did the 4.7 root to one, so I was just wondering if I really need to go any further. This is my first dealings with apps and I really don't know what I need to do to get apps easily and cheaply. What I think I got is a way to get apps from somewhere other than BN store. If that is all I want do I really need cm's?

No you don't need anything else just to get apps. Side load if you've already got the apk or get them from Google or Amazon or wherever you want.

Thanks! I will keep looking for apps. I did hit a problem when I downloaded and app and it said format unkown. I had unknown sources checked so I am not sure what the problem is. I then went to my root card and it had amazon store app and it said the same thing on that. Kinda wierd.
I got this to work! Downloaded it anew and installed!

NC apps from bn store to cm7

I want to be able to buy BN apps for the NC on CM 7.1 WITHOUT restoring stock. Tried installing shop.apk as well as all the BN*.apk files from 1.3 to system/app within CM7.1, but shop wouldn't install.
Also, are the NC apps somehow optimized for tablets/NC?
If you extract the apk and then install on CM7 it should work.

Well how do I get it?
Can I install just the BN store on CM7?
Can I download the apk from BN's website?

No... You would have to backup your CM install. Return to stock, root, extract the apks and then restore your backup and install.

I too would be interested in this. So I guess what the OP and I would be looking for is a walk though on how to do something like this. I am assuming I would have to install ADB on my PC and then what? I know about ADB push for manually side loading stuff, but for copying from the device?
The second part is I am nootered. I don't know about the OP, but would that make a difference? Supposedly ADB wireless is already installed on my nook.
To get an apk from the nook with adb, you'd do:
adb pull /data/app/filename.apk
Assuming its a data app, and not a system. Also note, it's all case sensitive.
Are these apks mentioned above specific to each device? Or could they just be pulled from someone's and posted here (unless paid apps of course)?
If so, happy to do that.

Sorry.
Seems no one is getting what I'm saying.

Sweet, I will give this a shot. It is really the only thing stopping me from running CM7.
Sweet, I'll try tomor.. My nook is my gf's
Does anyone know if the Barnes & noble apps are actually optimized for the nook? Or are they just the same android versions (a la amazon)? My guess is the latter.

do apps from the bn app store have any person info from my account baked into them?

You're kind of dense, aren't you? I know how to sideload apps in all sorts of manners.
Let me more clear. I am looking for a way to install the bn store on cm7 and purchase apps from it to install the apks.
Seems I can't. That is all. The store relies on the native framework.
Bro, that's not what your first post says. If u know how to do this, print a logcat or tell us what kinda errors you're getting so someone can help. If the apps are in fact different, i could compare the apk to an original and see what is changed.. And then maybe progress.

Hey bra, what apps you talkin' bout?
What I've done:
Copied Shop/BNPolicy.../BN [every other app]/ from the 1.3 zip in system/app to my CM7.1 install into system/app. Changed permissions, rebooted. Shop fails to install. I think the shop.apk is only meant for froyo (is 1.3 still froyo?). I might tear about the apk and try to change the manifest, but if anyone else has any ideas, let me know.
In any event, I'll probably wait until the 1.4 rollout and see what they have, and how easily that could be ported over to CM7.1.
TO REITERATE: I want to be able to buy BN apps for the NC on CM 7.1 WITHOUT restoring stock. Also, are BN apps actually optimized for NC? Anyone care to post a freebie apk from stock NC and see how it compares to a market equivalent?

That would be interesting. To purchase apps using the stock shop in a non stock rom.
I was just hoping to run something besides stock and not lose the $$ I had invested in purchased apps through the stock store by being able to run them on CM7 or HC or whatever comes along.

You can always dual-boot. It is a minor inconvenience to reboot everytime, but will do the job until something better comes along.
Hey all,
I know this is an old thread, but with cm9, CM could become my go to rom on the NC (it was rooted stock).
I realized that what I liked about stock was the way it used the status bar. This was something cm7 tried to emulate, but it is smoother in ics. In addition, the tablet style apps work well on ics.
Anyway, back to the discussion at hand.
I have been able to sideload every app I purchased from the nook store to my cm7 (and the ones I tried, cm9) partition successfully.
However, I heard there were issues using the system app.
I will start to play with the preloaded apps when I get a chance (which will be a while, we have exams this week).
I will report back as I do. Here is what I already know...
The shop will not work on gingerbread (or ics) without an edited manifest (or edited buildprop).
It was made under froyo.
I will report back when I learn more.
~Leko
Just thought I would post progress...
All apps I purchased from BN work (I did not buy many, but they do work).
As does Chess, and Crossword (I assume soduku will work).
However, none of the system apps do.
I tried running and installing Reader, browser, shop, launcher and a few others as well as the settings app. And, none of them would install or allow titanium to install either. This is with an edited build prop.

Have you rooted your NT today?

If you haven't check the Nook Dev. section of this forum since last night, Indirect and anlog have figured a way to root the NT. please check over there...

Getting mine on Friday, can't wait to put all these (and maybe more) to good use.
Nothing really worth rooting it for yet - at least for me. When they unlock the boot loader then I'll consider it.

Yeah, I rooted and got market working! I was about to return this, but now I have hope for the future capability of this device. The only huge issues I have now are just being able to install swiftkey, remap the nook button, copy/paste in all fields, and for autocomplete to work with gapps. Otherwise this thing kicks ass! Thank you developers for all the hard work, I will be sure to donate $20 to whoever figures out how to get roms on this. If ICS can run on this, I will be one happy camper.
I rooted mine and almost immeditly after the mobo in my big computer **** the bed. There is lots of really good stuff you can do with root access. You'll be able to put a real keyboard on there the google market, and soooooooo much more.
No need for root for me...I got all the apps I needed from the amazon app store and by downloading APKs off the web. Using Go Launcher, swiftkey and Dolphin web browser...

I'm kind of feeling the same way. With sideloading as an option, I'm getting pretty much everything I need from various non-Market sites. That's not to say rooting isn't worth it - just not a high need right now, except for the possibility of expanding the 1GB limitation.

How did you get swiftkey to work? I can't seem to enable it once it is installed. I saw that someone posted a possibly functional workaround similar to kf, but it was really laborous and I have two huge exams in 40 hours
I expanded the 1 GB limitation by using a 8 GB Micro SD card I had sitting around the house.

I dearly want to root the NT. I have access to an iMac and a Windows XP machine, but I'm not at all familiar with scripts and adb and stuff. I rooted and rom'd my Htc Incredible, but that was easy lol. A video walkthrough would be awesome, or a one click solution like Unrevoked. I do appreciate everything that the devs have done though, thanks guys. If anyone would like to hold my hand through this process I, and I'm sure others, would greatly appreciate it!

i rooted mine today. mostly because the script included the gapps. i wanted market for easier management of my apps.
Is there anyway to Copy and Paste without root? I assumed the NT would automatically be able to do it unless I am missing something?

I am not sure I am going to root this device. If I can get what I needed via sideloading I may just pass. I hate having to redo everything each time an update get's pushed down, and was not happy with CM7.1 (Wifi, SOD, and other issues) on my NC.

[Q] NOOK for Android by B&N app

I rooted my NT a couple of weeks ago using Indirect's method, I also did the OTA block. I've thought about re-rooting to delete the bloatware, but still want to be able to access the B&N store as I do like to read and to be able to purchase more e-books. I tried installing the lastest NOOK for Android by B&N app from the Android Market, but it won't open - I see the icon in my launcher, but nothing happens when I touch it. Anybody have any thoughts?
Had no problems doing this with my NC w/ CM7 - hoping that somebody figures that out soon for the NT
Thanks ~ G
You don't need the Nook for Android app, as the stock reader/store does the same thing.
I'm also fairly certain that the nook app itself doesn't work (probably by design) on the NT, since you have the default reader/store.

I tried to install the Nook app and it doesn't work for me either.
Blocking the update broke my B&N store. I used the method that said the store will not be affected. I was already a customer at the B&N store and wanted to continue to buy things, but B&N is making this way too difficult.
I too have the same problem. After rooting and preventing updates, I am unable to connect to B&N. Anyone have any suggestions to solve this problem?

New NT, got a few questions about rooting.

Hi everyone,
Just bought a nook touch today and while I really like the device I am a bit disappointed that I am unable to use some of the apps I have on my phone. I have previously rooted my Galaxy S 4G using a one click software from these forums so that is the extent of my rooting experience.
I looked and it does have 1.4.1 which as I understand is the cause of my problem not being able to use some of the apps I want to use. I also noticed that there are a few different methods of rooting this device which I find a bit confusing.
Does anyone know which is considered to be the easiest and possibly most reliable for people with limited rooting experience?
Hello , this is nook tablet forum not Nook touch, if you have the right device then there are many threads discussing this, there 3 methods the normal using a computer installing drivers and root, using an sdcard format it and root from it or after you install CWM restore/flash one of the ROM' s that already come with root, appspot and tweaks. Use the one you think is easier for you.
If you use the normal method as you're in 1.4.1 you need to first use the acclaim_update.zip "magic card" by adam outlet to go back to stock 1.4.0 . Lastly once you're rooted install CWM and wait for another release of CM7 or CM9.
PS:read the FAQ there is good information and a video section to make it easier for you to root

Unfortunately you can't because your NT came with 1.4.1 and B&N took down the ability of sideload apps, in 1.4.0 that is not aproblem.

You do NOT need to "root" in order to do what you want but you WILL need the ability to side-load app's which is only available in version 1.4.0.
Your option would be to "revert" (As Veronica Said) to 1.4.0 and install the app's you want. If you don't block OTA's however, your tablet will eventually be upgraded without your input back to 1.4.1 and the side-loading capability would disappear.
See This Valuable Post by AdamOutler for additional information.

Thanks for the link. That is exactly what I am looking for. Quick question though. After downgrading to 1.4.0 and then loading the apps I want if I do not block nt from going back to 1.4.1 would I lose the abilty to use the apps I had loaded?

I don't believe so but I'm not 100% sure. I think Once they have been side-loaded they will still work but adding more app's in the future will be blocked.
I have performed the steps in This Thread to block the updates (OTA's) if you are interested in taking it a step further.

Is there any reason to actually keep the 1.4.1 update? Like were any bug fixes actually addressed or was it just a big middle finger more or less? Also, was there any chance of a 1.4.2 update in the future and would my nt be able to even update if I blocked the 1.4.1 update. Assuming no on that one?

Nop there is no reason to keep 1.4.1. About what is fixed in 1.4.1 or what is new, well the only noticeable "new" feature is the lack of sideloading, the rest is a myth because anyone here have been able to see any difference beyond the sideloading thing.
Someone wrote that it supposedly have better battery life but so far no proofs nada de nada mi amigo.

How to install apps?

I´ve just got my Nook Tablet and I´ve created my account. I´ve coppied a moboplayer, firefox and solid explorer APKs to the SD card but when I try to view these files on the system browser they don´t show up. Also, I cannot find the play store anywhere.
The question is how do I install these apps?
- gmail
- moboplayer
- firefox
- solid explorer
- some launcher that reproduces the standard android buttoms (back, home, etc)
If you take the time to read the forum quides you will be able to.
1st: You have to root.
Oh, how I miss that days of the one click root.
I can already see that the latest firefox version is not compatible with the stock nook tablet (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1735861)
I´m guessing the AppMenu apk won´t work either unless it´s rooted, right.

You need to use the external sd card root method. After that you will be able to get the full google store gmail etc. Some apps in the store might say not compatible, if that happens google the (app name) .apk, download, and install package. I also recomend having home manager/quick switcher and installing another launcher ( go launcher or adw launcher) then you will have one screen native b&n nook home and another that is an android tablet.

Pretty much what everyone else said: need to root first, then using the tablet, try to download and install, "NTHiddenSettings" and Nook will prompt you to enable external install
Make sure you read all the instructions and warnings prior to attempting any modifications, as it does technically void warranty.
That said, the root tools on this forum are effective and have really helped unlock the potential of my Tablet.
If you don't want to root then use Cwm7 on sdcard. You pretty much have a straightforward racket w/o camera.
I'be done both though right now have the internal cm7.

And do a little research on the brand and speed of the SD Card too. Some work great, some don't.
Old darts right. it seems that My does play well with class 10cards and sometimes Sandisk. Most people seem to do better with class 4 cards.
