Ok. I apologize if this has been addressed and possibly even answered. I'm finding inconsistent responses on various boards and I've found this is usually the best place for the right response.
I have quite a few friends that use iPhones.
Those same friends love to send group text messages - which I assume stay as grouped messages for anyone with an iPhone.
PLEASE tell me there is a way I can pull this off on my Galaxy? A setting I'm missing perhaps?
I've tried the stock text app.
I've tried GO SMS PRO.
I've tried Handcent SMS.
I can't get any of them to help with this.
Am I missing a setting in one of these apps that can pull this off?
I also find lately that the I have to click a "download" button on the text that comes in. I don't know if this is a function of it coming in as a MMS?
Any insighte would be greatly appreciated.
I searched on this very same topic this morning and from what I read, this isn't native functionality on Android. I've been using an iPhone since the 3G and this is my first Android phone and the fact that this isn't core functionality is really amazing. For all the great things I love about the Galaxy S3, to not have the ability to group texts sent to multiple recipients and follow a conversation in a group is a BIG let down.
I thought I read in some threads that Handcent has some way to accommodate this feature, but it is buggy? Does anyone have any insight on this?

I read the same thing, but I've been unable to get it to work at all.
You can do it with the latest version of handcent but its kind of buggy. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1559824
I also believe the native messaging app on the Droid Bionic does it, but I'm not sure how it works.
iMessaging on Android
It is possible, and works pretty effectively.
One thing first, your having to press 'download' has to do with an option in your messaging app labeled 'MMS Auto-Retrieval' or something similar. Check that option and it will download all MMS together.
Anyway on to the part you want. I haven't used handcent's feature but GO SMS does this feature quite well.
1. Go into Settings
2. Go to the Advanced tab
3. Select the 'Sent Settings' option
4. Check the option for 'MMS Group Chat'

5. You can now group chat with iOS users. Whenever you send a group chat it will default to this setting and all iOS / GO SMS users will see it as one groupchat window. The same goes for when iOS users send you a message as part of a group chat. The only thing is...each message will always come as an MMS. It initially gets added as a new text from the person it came from, then it gets 'redirected' into the group chat conversation thats already open. Its not native...but it works.
hope this helped.
I use handcent for this and it works quite well for me.
1. Download Handcent SMS from Google Play
2. In "Application Settings" click "Default Messenging Application"
3. At the very bottom of "Application Settings", click "Thread group conversation"
4. Go into "Receive message settings" and click "Auto Download"
It is not quite as refined as iMessage but works nearly perfectly for me. Messages go through the individual sender before being sent to the group text and sometimes get stuck for a minute, for instance.
Good luck
I can't get it work with GO SMS pro. It appears to send them properly but they're always received in the individual contacts and don't copy over. This results in a very confusing series of conversations.
Going to give Handcent a try for a while and see how it goes. Thanks for the helpful feedback and how-tos

coming from an iphone i can say it's definitely not as good of an experience as imessage, but it's the best the android can do right now.
this is such a useful feature and is clearly possible in apps, i don't understand why it's not integrated better into android!

Thanks for this guide. I was able to get this working using GO SMS.
It's quite disappointing that I can no longer take advantage of the automatic calling when you lift the phone to your face that is built in to the G3 - but I seem to be the only person that liked it anyways.

Then that person is not replying to all. If you have the above setting checked it works great in GOSMS
stock messaging
yeah, I miss that feature too actually. However one thing that really ticked me off was how the stock app turned the screen on for EVERY single text message. Rather annoying. Aside from the group messaging, i think the screen off option vs hold to face calling was a fair trade off. (i know there are roms that disable that feature for the stock messaging app)

Yes, if the people you are chatting with don't have a form of iMessage / GOSMS / Handcent, then they will only be replying to you and messing up entire thread, haha.
Just think, thats what you were doing before you used gosms/handcent
So I gave Handcent a shot (with the settings provided in this thread) and didn't have any luck. A friend of mine sent out a message yesterday to me and a number of others and every person that responded to the message was a separate text message sent to my phone. I downloaded GO SMS Pro this morning in hopes that I have better luck with this app. It still floors me that this isn't native functionality on the Android platform.
FYI if you are coming from an iPhone and used iMessage before, you have to go into your apple support profile and unregister your idevice. Otherwise some messages - particularly group messages get lost.

In go SMS go to:

Setting/Send Setting and check "MMS Group Chat"
Setting/ Receive Setting check "disable other message notification
In your default messaging disable notification just in case.
That's it.

Anyone know if it's possible to add a bit of colour to HTC Messaging? I don't mean turn it into an iPhone but it would be nice for the conversation view to have a bit of character, it's as boring as hell in gray and white.
I was thinking the exact same thing. Extremely boring interface for messages. Iphone is more "fun" and maybe childish. But i mean, some sort of in between that.

Nice app, I see, but I think it won't work with our LEOs.
SMS Messaging is a proprietary application and it can't be replaced or modified, unless you want definitely change it, installing a different client.
The post you linked talks about a WM 6.5.x SMS app, that is way different from the LEO one, it kind of looks like the previous WM versions. If you wanted to use it, you'd leave the main SMS client out and install it. But I don't frankly know how it'll turn out.
Cheers

That's just a modification on the layout of the standard WM SMS thing, you can't use that because HTC has their own messaging client now which overlays the old WM one.
EDIT: You can use that but you have to disable HTC messaging if so.
For Vito, you have to install Zenyee Disable Htc mesaging

I have used Vito in the past but it's very buggy. And with HTC Messaging needing to be disabled in order to use it, sending MMS is a real pain and requires the frankly dire Arcsoft to be installed.
I'm just looking for something to spruce up the look of HTC's offering, I have no issue with it other than the design.
has anyone tried or seen sms pop up..? like in android where you can see sms message popping up in the screen?
i hate to open notification everytime!!
also no light buttons
I still can not believe that with all of the wonderful CABs around that no one has actually just designed a decent replacement message client..
One that does SMS and MMS, both in conversation and non conversation format.
One that has a built in file manager so that you can redirect messages to a folder of your choice etc.. and basically just File Manage..
The current client is total pants and I have disabled it and used the original version but I have no MMS now as I just can not get on with Arcsoft client.. The crop of currently available message clients are just not worth my effort..
HINT:
SPB or RESCO take note... business is waiting for you.
So if any budding programers are interested, I for one would be tempted to bung some Euros your way for support..

It does beg one to ask, what were HTC thinking (or not thinking as the case maybe) when they took a average but workable message client (tmail.exe) and replace it for something much worse..
At the moment the way my phone is configured (and I am not 100% sure how or why) but with Resco Contact Manger in place, HTC client disabled and tmail working, I get the options of all my folders from tmail, conversation from Resco and a variety of combinations in between depending on what message icon I press from the screen.. its all okay but there is so much more room for some serious improvement.. and to be honest a lot of phones are used for texting and communicating.. oh well, I can dream..
This is just the normal text message in Sense.
If I click on the centre of the message I get this conversation reply option.
If I am in Resco Contact Manager I get this message screen.
If I am in Resco Contact Manager I get this conversation reply message screen.
If I click "All Messages" I get this old style folders screen.
This is my "New" or "Reply" screen within the old HTC style.
So with HTC Messaging disabled, how do you send MMS?
Unfortunately, no MMS, which is a pain really as I have 125 included each month in my package.. I am still waiting for a work around as before I use to burn that 125 up every month..
I can compose them, it is just the phone won't send them..
I send quite a few unfortunately so anything that equates to no MMS is a no-go for me.
[Not a rant.]
Just wondering if anyone has any clues to when Android will have Group text?

The iPhone and BB have great group messaging abilities. How come Android hasn't done it yet?
I've been using group text on the native text app. If you get a group text click in the reply box then go to settings and click reply all.
You just have to make sure you select reply all for each response. Been working great for me.
Not sure if this is an android thing but probably sense.

I believe you're talking about how iphone users send group texts via group mms. The native android app doesn't do it very well and messes up the threads in your inbox.
Handcent, gosms, and Verizon messaging app supports it.
I use Handcent. Go to settings and make it default for messaging. Then scroll to bottom and select threading of messages. It works beautifully.

Beluga does this well, as well.
Beluga was bought out by Facebook.
Third party cross platform apps that do this better are Google messenger (also includes group video), groupme, whatsapp, Facebook messenger.

However, Go SMS allows you to do it though. Now you can stay in a group, even with iPhone users. You'll appear in their group as well.
Each text is MMS though.
GroupMe is a great app for that or you can just add them one by one in the initial text.

Hi there,
I am the developper of the Android application called "Group SMS" (please look for the following keywords on the play store to reach my application : Group SMS Tur Han )
This application allows you to send personalized SMS to a group of people very easily.
★ How to ★
1. Write your message from "Group SMS" with special keywords
2. select your recipients
3. "Group SMS" will change these special keywords with the Firstname or Lastname of your recipient => the message becomes personalized
★ Example ★
▷ original message from Group SMS => "I wish you an Happy New Year dear [FIRSTNAME]"
▷ Brian will receive => "I wish you an Happy New Year dear Brian"
▷ Mariah will receive => "I wish you an Happy New Year dear Mariah"
▷ and so on... all done with a single sms writing
You can even create groups of contacts synced with your google account for quick sending.
All kind of feedbacks highly appreciated to improve the app. Thank you

Are they put in a group chat or once they reply to you it comes separated?

With Group SMS, no one in the group see neither the others numbers nor the response from each other. Indeed, the SMS are sent one after the other (as they are personalized) making impossible to the group to know to whom you are sending your message.
Also, when someone receive a personalized SMS from Group SMS and reply to it, this person will only reply to the sender (which means you).
I hope these explanations are clear enough
Tur han, your app sounds like what I would call an sms "mail merge" or "bulk texting" rather than a two-way group chat sms like the op wants...
I have used reply all in the HTC Sense messaging app, and I too wish it would keep the replies from everyone in the same thread rather than confusing replies into individual threads.

Hi there,
I think we are facing 2 seperate needs which are incompatible.
Indeed, this app isn't designed to keep the same thread for a group texting. On the contrary, "Group SMS" is designed to let the user write a single SMS and each recepients of the group received an unique personalized message.
I haven't found any better name than "Group SMS" but I will have to think of changing it to maybe "bulk sms" instead ? Pending a better name, it will be known as "Group SMS" on the play store
Thank you for your feedback tmuka.
Or maybe a name like "sms broadcast"...
Google+
Google+ allows for a very easy to use and almost perfect "group chat" (along with Android's own group chat---what is this guy thiinking, no group chat??) by using the Hangout feature--only caveat is all users need to have access to Google+ either by mobile or PC browser... either way, works awesome and in real-time.

That's not the issue. Those are separate notifications. He's talking about getting a notification directly from the google voice app. You can turn off text and email notifications and just rely on the app. I have not been getting notifications from the app either.
You are correct timtlm that the app is not giving me the notifications anymore or I guess ever but still pretty new to the phone. Also wanted to mention in my old Evo 4g I had it setup to not to use the carrier voicemail service. Does not seem to be an option but that might be because of IC version.

OK, I just got it to show the notification. I had checked the settings in the app to be able to review google voicemail within the call history. I'm guessing sense doesn't support that since I don't see anything in the call history. After unchecking that, I started to get notifications again.

I unchecked it. It's in the Google voice app under menu, settings, voicemail display. It was unchecked by default. It's supposed to be a new ICS feature.
I already have that one checked. This is just so strange but guessing it has something to do with the sleep feature of the phone.

He said he UNCHECKED it i believe.
I also was not getting notifications for voicemails, but was for texts so I don't think it is a sleep issue. Sounds like unchecking that setting should give me voicemail notifications too, thanks.
I've been using Google Voice with these settings from the Sync And Notifications menu with no problems. I never did set up the Voicemail on the phone, and for messaging its Google Voice unless its a MMS instead of SMS. Google voice doesn't support MMS so it automatically goes to the messaging app. Notification works fine for all.
Just flashed cm11 and don't get GV text notifications.
Well I see them slide up in the top if I'm looking while I get a text but they don't stick. (Or no notification if it's off)
I didn't set up vm within GV, and I've reset GV app data, still no luck.
Also I use 2 accounts. 1 main one for email (and app purchases), and 1 primarily for Google voice.
I have no sync off for gv account. But the thing is the same setup on my tablet, I get notifications. (Same amounts, same sync settings, running jelly bean on tab, kit kat on phone)
Any suggestions?
I've seen plenty of posts where people are trying to get AT&T VVM to work on an ICS/JB ROM. Some are successful, some aren't.
I missed - from my iPhone days - a TRUE VVM... an INTEGRATED VVM. I feel that having to open a 3rd party app is a very inelegant solution.
This post will serve as a guide on firstly; how to setup the Note to work with Google Voice, as the automated setup just plum doesn't work, and secondly; how to integrate it into the Call Log.*
* NOTE: Integration with the call log currently only supports an AOSP (CM/AOKP/LiquidSmooth/etc) Dialer and possibly any 3rd party dialer that explicitly states compatibility with GV. Sadly, TouchWiz Dialer does NOT support integration. So neither the GB nor ICS stock ROMs' dialers will support this.
One of Google's services is Google Voice. Many people use it for SMS and VOIP, but you can also use it strictly as a Voicemail service.
First things first. You have to be provisioned by your Carrier for Visual Voicemail. As I'm on AT&T and came from an iPhone, I already was. So I had nothing to do here.
Just for the record, my phone is:
AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note
CyanogenMod 9.1.0
STEP 1
Go to Google Voice on a PC.
Log in, and set up Google Voice. For straight VM purposes, you do not want to make outgoing calls with GV. Be sure to choose that.
Once initially setup, you will click on the Settings gear at the top right, then click Settings.
Now click on the link that states "Activate Voicemail". (you would have this during initial setup, but this is how to return here always)
You'll be presented with the following box of information:
NOTE: you will NOT do what this box instructs you to do. This is the part that does not work.
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Jot down the number you see after the *004*. This is your GV VVM routing number.
STEP 2
Install Google Voice on your phone and setup.
Simple enough. Here's the link for the Play Store
Open the app. You'll want to sign in with your gmail account that you created the GV account with on your PC.
You'll step through the setup. Be sure to select as shown below:
Once you reach the below screen, select SKIP. (This is due to the auto-config being ineffective)
Once you've finished the setup of the app, you'll eventually be looking at a GV screen that's empty of VMs (or not if you've used it before).
You're done here for now.
STEP 3
Setup your Dialer manually to forward calls to GV instead of Carrier VM.
Open your dialer, hit the menu key, then select Settings.
Ignore everything else about VMs, scroll to the bottom and select Call Forwarding
After this loads data from the Carrier, you'll be looking at three sections with numbers in them. These numbers are your Carrier's specific routing number to forward unanswered calls to their VM service. Record this number down if you wish.
Tap the first box with a number in it, then change it to the number you recorded down from the GV webpage.
Repeat this for the following two sections with numbers. You want all three to route to the same GV VM routing number.
STEP 4
Integrating GV with the phone's Dialer.
At this point. Your phone is setup and will work. You can go ahead and test it out if you'd like. By default (i think), GV will transcribe any message left to you and send you an email and sms with the contents, along with making an entry in the GV app on your phone. This is OK, but it's still not INTEGRATED, like I'm used to with an iPhone.
So, right now, the Call Log in the Dialer looks like this:
Open the GV app.
Hit the menu key, then select Settings.
Select the option "Voicemail Display" (honestly they should make this bold and name it INTEGRATE TO CALL LOG)
Now open your Phone and go to the Call Log. If you have any VMs, it will look like this now:
If you tap on the Play button by an entry, it'll go to the following screen:
And there you have it. Now, don't you feel silly for trying till you're blue in the face to make the AT&T VVM app work? It's trash compared to this. PERIOD.
-John.
Very nice write up. Thank you.

Agreed....
Will be added to the "super thread"
Thank you !!.....g
XDA is no longer worth my time.
All you have to do is get att customers service to disable i forget the name i thinks its somethjng like next generation messaging. They had to delete my plan then redo it and when it said is this a next generation device they put no. Then art visual voicemail will work

I haven't used ATT Vmail (visual or otherwise) in years. I use GVM instead. Not sure what the issue is or why the above is needed (and I am not trying to put the OP down), but I simply put GVM as my voicemail number a couple of years ago and now I get both a text and an email with a fairly accurate transcription of the VM. If the transcription is really bad, or it has specific information that I really need, I press "play message" from my email voicemail transcription and it opens a browser window, automatically downloads the Vmail as an MP3 and I listen to it.
EDIT: Sorry, I reread the OP's post and the only difference is that I do not have it integrated into my dialer. I do have a contact with my GV number listed so on my dialer it comes up as Googlevoicemail, which is what I listed it as in my contacts.
You're correct. This is something inherently easy, but some have expressed difficulty with setting up on the Note, plus I wanted to share the integration which I really wanted.

Yes, the integration into the dialer is the best part - I didn't realize you could do that until this post.

Thank you worked like a charm.

thanks..worked like a charm....no more youmail for me..
Thanks for this man. Been using GV for years. But never knew about intergrating it into the dialer. Very nice.

Been using GV for VVM since the Captivate and never knew about this! Much more efficient than opening up all these different apps!

I like using att visual VM because I don't like Google voice taking control of my text messaging. From what I remember you could turn it off but it was a pita and every time you flashed a new ROM you had to set it up again

Not sure if it used to be that way, but that's completely not how it works now.
When I flash a new from, I have install google voice app, go through the setup in the app quickly, then change that option in the settings to integrate. That's it.
SMS and such still goes through at&t network.

My bad.
Voicemail integration works great, but there is one issue:
When there is a new voicemail, although there is a notification in the status bar, there is no ringtone alert. I have double checked the notification ringtone selected in Call Settings under Voicemail setup. The phone vibrates when a new voicemail arrives and vibration is enabled, but never rings.
Anyone else facing this issue?
Nice set of instructions. Very easy to follow.
Personally, I've been using AT&T Messages app (free on Play Store). It puts transcribed vm, mms, and sms in one conversation thread. It only works with AT&T however.
Great instructions. I would like to add 1 thing that was not mentioned...very helpful if you would like to access your voice message by holding down the 1 key in the phone dialpad.
How to update the actual voice number in settings?
1. Open your dialer, hit the menu key, then select Settings.
2. Scroll to Other Call Settings and select Voicemail
3. Click on setup and then Voicemail number.
4. Enter new Google Voice access number i.e. +19161234567
5. Click OK and exit settings.
Note: Your Google Voice access number is different than the Google Voice routing number mentioned in this thread that is used to setup the call forwarding.
THANKS!!
Is there a way to send a whatsapp message in the same way I dial a number for a phone call or for an SMS text?
I type the number —> send message in Whatsapp.
So far the only way I know is to add the number to the contacts, and can’t find a way online to do what I want.
I volunteer as a translator for a charity and I need to message in Whatsapp to multiple numbers each day, and that’s a real pain.
I haven't used it, but the tin says you can
Click2Chat WhatsApp (by MTechViral)

Thanks a lot, sir, that’s really appreciated! I’ve just installed it and I’ll test it soon.
You are welcome. Can someone suggest an Xposed module for the same purpose?
Just FYI, I tested Click2Chat WhatsApp (by MTechViral). Works perfectly. You compose the message in Click2Chat, and it uses WhatsApp to send the message to the mobile number (not in your contact list).
I would still prefer not to have a separate app for the purpose though. Maybe an Xposed module which will introduce a compose message button in the WhatsApp UI itself like XInsta adds a "Download" option in the context menu in Instagram.

Yes, you can do so.
I have noticed another App that does this much better Message Any Number for WhatsApp.
I have just tested this app and started loving this tiny app, as it gives me freedom to send whatsapp to anyone without saving his or her number.

Here is your answer
Yes you can send messages to non-contacts. Here is the procedure
At first, you need to Install an app named as “WhatsDirect”, freely available on Google Play Store. The direct download link is given below tap on the app icon to download.
After installation, accept the app permissions and continue by swiping the startup tutorial.
On the home screen of the app, we see two options – Mobile No. & Message Content. (Must use your country code on the starting of the number).
Enter the mobile number and write the message content in the below box and tap on “Send Message”.
I found this on YTECHB website
I have developed a similar app. It also supports WhatsApp for Business app. https://goo.gl/w4kNnD
WhatsApp has an official API to open the chat screen using the mobile number.
The best part of the API is, you can use it to send messages to unsaved contacts.
WA Direct Chat app on Play store is doing the same, you can download the app here

You can either select the number from call logs or enter it manually.

That’s just a dumb suggestion. For a single chat of a few minutes I would pollute my contact list with a gazillion of unknown contacts.
If you read the first post of this thread, and not just its title, perhaps you would know that
“I volunteer as a translator for a charity and I need to message in Whatsapp to multiple numbers each day, and that’s a real pain.”
Thanks to all the others, I’ve never received a notifications of your replies!
Hi, As I am an active user of Whatsapp and I have used this app to send the images and videos. But if you want to send msg to any number which is not in your contact then you can use click2chat which is available on the internet. It will help you to send the message.
Asked Google but did not find an answer. Therefore, I have to ask here.
My wife told me the following story:
-she's got a WhatsApp group of 4 contacts on her smartphone;
- she is the admin, the ONLY admin;
- at some point the 5th participant appears in the group and starts sending spam; she has this contact in her phone, but she swears by God that she did not add him to the group.
Questions:
- Has anyone met a similar "hack"?
- Is it possible to look at some logs, when and HOW the "extra participant" was added/invited to the group?
Thank you in advance for your help !! %)))

That was also something I need. Thanks!
Try this easy way. Open this website on your mobile https://jpsays.com/wau
It is a secured website for mobiles. No need to login. No need to install any app.
just type the mobile number and the message you want to send.
and don't worry. It's safe and doesn't require any special permission like any app installed.
It works with iPhone and Android Phones as long as you have installed Whatsapp Messenger

How to identify the contacts who view my statues secretly
Hello Great developers,
I am using Whatsapp+ v6.85 moded by Abo2Sadam.
I am wondering if there is a way to know the contacts who viewed my status who did uncheck the Read Recipient in privacy settings?
Is there a way to identify them? Kindly note that I am not intending to prevent them from viewing my statues, but it's something personal and I need to know if this someone is viewing my statues secretly.
