[Q] Google Voice No Notifications - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

I am not sure if I setup the new phone correctly or not. With my old phone I went under Settings--Call-Voicemail Service and could select voice. With this new phone not seeing the option. Also I have to click and open to view if someone left me a message or not inside of Google Voice application. Is this because of how HTC is doing multi-tasking a little different? Thanks for any help or insight.

I'm not getting voicemail notifications from GV either. It started after I flashed a custom rom.

could be the sleep issue that seems to be plaguing everyone, but other than that im not sure what it could be

I saw someone else post but did not fully understand the sleep issue and since I have not unlock phone was not clear if that is what cause the problem or stock has the same issue. Thanks for the information.

i really don't know if it affects stock, but since all custom roms are having the issue then i would guess its also a stock issue? just a guess though since i dont develop roms, i just tweak them to my liking lol

I just called myself from a land line and left a voicemail. Within 30 seconds, I got an email and a text from GV notifying me of the new VM. I'm on Fresh 5.1.1 and have been about a week now. This is the first I've heard of this problem so I was worried that maybe something had recently changed. All appears to be fine here.

The issue is deep sleep, after the phone has been off for a while it turns off WiFi and data to conserve battery

That's not the issue. Those are separate notifications. He's talking about getting a notification directly from the google voice app. You can turn off text and email notifications and just rely on the app. I have not been getting notifications from the app either.

You are correct timtlm that the app is not giving me the notifications anymore or I guess ever but still pretty new to the phone. Also wanted to mention in my old Evo 4g I had it setup to not to use the carrier voicemail service. Does not seem to be an option but that might be because of IC version.

OK, I just got it to show the notification. I had checked the settings in the app to be able to review google voicemail within the call history. I'm guessing sense doesn't support that since I don't see anything in the call history. After unchecking that, I started to get notifications again.

Can you clarify, did you uncheck "Voicemail Display: View and play voicemails from the phone call log?"

I am not seeing "Voicemail Display: View and play voicemails from the phone call log" inside of google voice app? Am I looking in the wrong place?

I unchecked it. It's in the Google voice app under menu, settings, voicemail display. It was unchecked by default. It's supposed to be a new ICS feature.

I already have that one checked. This is just so strange but guessing it has something to do with the sleep feature of the phone.

He said he UNCHECKED it i believe.
I also was not getting notifications for voicemails, but was for texts so I don't think it is a sleep issue. Sounds like unchecking that setting should give me voicemail notifications too, thanks.

I've been using Google Voice with these settings from the Sync And Notifications menu with no problems. I never did set up the Voicemail on the phone, and for messaging its Google Voice unless its a MMS instead of SMS. Google voice doesn't support MMS so it automatically goes to the messaging app. Notification works fine for all.

Just flashed cm11 and don't get GV text notifications.
Well I see them slide up in the top if I'm looking while I get a text but they don't stick. (Or no notification if it's off)
I didn't set up vm within GV, and I've reset GV app data, still no luck.
Also I use 2 accounts. 1 main one for email (and app purchases), and 1 primarily for Google voice.
I have no sync off for gv account. But the thing is the same setup on my tablet, I get notifications. (Same amounts, same sync settings, running jelly bean on tab, kit kat on phone)
Any suggestions?

Help me get rid of annoying new voicemail notification

I cannot get rid of this new voicemail notification from the status bar no matter what I do. Atrix does not have an option to clear voicemail notifications like other phones.
I don't have a voicemail setup and I don't plan to do it.
My firmware is 45.2.17.MB860.BellMobility.en.CA. The phone is unlocked and rooted and I am using it on a 2G network (Speakout). I called Speakout but they could not help me.
Below are the screen captures of the notification.

Why don't you go into recovery mode and try to wipe some stuff like caches and such?
You could try clearing the data for Voicemail in TiBU, you could even try freezing the app since you don't plan on using their vm. Google Voice is a better alternative anyways.

Download Titanium Backup From Android Market here. Go to the "backup/restore" tab, find the Voicemail app, select "wipe data".
I can't see the pic at work, but from what I remember my girlfriend had the SAME PROBLEM. It's the factory voicemail that is notifying you. If you use gVoice for voicemail, you got a VM before switching over. You can clear data all you want but the VM service runs off a trigger from the server and until you clear it- youre toast. You can clear all the data in the world and it wont resolve.
To clear the trigger, there are a couple ways.
1) If you are one AT&T do this:
To remedy this issue call the AT&T Pilot Voicemail. You can locate it for your area from this document.
For example, OKLA City is (405)664-6359, you can call that # if you have free long distance (most do this day and age and from a cell).
If you call from a land line it will prompt you for the Voicemail box #, aka your phone number. Input that, your pin, then it will let you in to clear the VM.
Should you be on another carrier, call that carriers Pilot Line for their VM service. A pilot line is a backdoor to allow say a secretary to leave a VM without calling your phone. Pretty neat.. also very handy for this situation.
2) You can set the VOICEMAIL Carrier in your settings back to your OG settings of the Carrier. This will redirect you #1 dialpad button to whoever does your carrier VM service. Call it and delete the message.

On MY phone the name of my VM app is Google Voice, because imo it is FAR superior to any other VM app! But since obviously we are not talking about GV.. Do a search for "dialer", my results look like this:
You see where the Dialer application (CM7) says [voicemail] in front of it? I'm guessing that's what handles VMs from your carrier. Wipe data for it and see, you can "backup" before you wipe in case you need/want to restore.. I hope that fixes your problem!

For some reason I cannot find the "voicemail" app in TiB. I searched for "dialer" and for "voice" but all I got was "voice commands", "voice readouts", "voice search", "dialer storage".
Strange. Maybe because it's stock ROM?
Thank you for this solution. That stupid notification was driving me crazy!

Thanks, worked for me.
The other suggestion I was going to make was to call your mail box and clear down any unheard/saved calls as that notification is triggered by your carrier (well it is with mine, goes away once I listen to them, not when I call the mail box!)

[Q] Group Text Messaging - Problems caused by iMessage

Ok. I apologize if this has been addressed and possibly even answered. I'm finding inconsistent responses on various boards and I've found this is usually the best place for the right response.
I have quite a few friends that use iPhones.
Those same friends love to send group text messages - which I assume stay as grouped messages for anyone with an iPhone.
PLEASE tell me there is a way I can pull this off on my Galaxy? A setting I'm missing perhaps?
I've tried the stock text app.
I've tried GO SMS PRO.
I've tried Handcent SMS.
I can't get any of them to help with this.
Am I missing a setting in one of these apps that can pull this off?
I also find lately that the I have to click a "download" button on the text that comes in. I don't know if this is a function of it coming in as a MMS?
Any insighte would be greatly appreciated.
I searched on this very same topic this morning and from what I read, this isn't native functionality on Android. I've been using an iPhone since the 3G and this is my first Android phone and the fact that this isn't core functionality is really amazing. For all the great things I love about the Galaxy S3, to not have the ability to group texts sent to multiple recipients and follow a conversation in a group is a BIG let down.
I thought I read in some threads that Handcent has some way to accommodate this feature, but it is buggy? Does anyone have any insight on this?

I read the same thing, but I've been unable to get it to work at all.
You can do it with the latest version of handcent but its kind of buggy. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1559824
I also believe the native messaging app on the Droid Bionic does it, but I'm not sure how it works.
iMessaging on Android
It is possible, and works pretty effectively.
One thing first, your having to press 'download' has to do with an option in your messaging app labeled 'MMS Auto-Retrieval' or something similar. Check that option and it will download all MMS together.
Anyway on to the part you want. I haven't used handcent's feature but GO SMS does this feature quite well.
1. Go into Settings
2. Go to the Advanced tab
3. Select the 'Sent Settings' option
4. Check the option for 'MMS Group Chat'

5. You can now group chat with iOS users. Whenever you send a group chat it will default to this setting and all iOS / GO SMS users will see it as one groupchat window. The same goes for when iOS users send you a message as part of a group chat. The only thing is...each message will always come as an MMS. It initially gets added as a new text from the person it came from, then it gets 'redirected' into the group chat conversation thats already open. Its not native...but it works.
hope this helped.
I use handcent for this and it works quite well for me.
1. Download Handcent SMS from Google Play
2. In "Application Settings" click "Default Messenging Application"
3. At the very bottom of "Application Settings", click "Thread group conversation"
4. Go into "Receive message settings" and click "Auto Download"
It is not quite as refined as iMessage but works nearly perfectly for me. Messages go through the individual sender before being sent to the group text and sometimes get stuck for a minute, for instance.
Good luck
I can't get it work with GO SMS pro. It appears to send them properly but they're always received in the individual contacts and don't copy over. This results in a very confusing series of conversations.
Going to give Handcent a try for a while and see how it goes. Thanks for the helpful feedback and how-tos

coming from an iphone i can say it's definitely not as good of an experience as imessage, but it's the best the android can do right now.
this is such a useful feature and is clearly possible in apps, i don't understand why it's not integrated better into android!

Thanks for this guide. I was able to get this working using GO SMS.
It's quite disappointing that I can no longer take advantage of the automatic calling when you lift the phone to your face that is built in to the G3 - but I seem to be the only person that liked it anyways.

Then that person is not replying to all. If you have the above setting checked it works great in GOSMS
stock messaging
yeah, I miss that feature too actually. However one thing that really ticked me off was how the stock app turned the screen on for EVERY single text message. Rather annoying. Aside from the group messaging, i think the screen off option vs hold to face calling was a fair trade off. (i know there are roms that disable that feature for the stock messaging app)

Yes, if the people you are chatting with don't have a form of iMessage / GOSMS / Handcent, then they will only be replying to you and messing up entire thread, haha.
Just think, thats what you were doing before you used gosms/handcent
So I gave Handcent a shot (with the settings provided in this thread) and didn't have any luck. A friend of mine sent out a message yesterday to me and a number of others and every person that responded to the message was a separate text message sent to my phone. I downloaded GO SMS Pro this morning in hopes that I have better luck with this app. It still floors me that this isn't native functionality on the Android platform.
FYI if you are coming from an iPhone and used iMessage before, you have to go into your apple support profile and unregister your idevice. Otherwise some messages - particularly group messages get lost.

Setting/Send Setting and check "MMS Group Chat"
Setting/ Receive Setting check "disable other message notification
In your default messaging disable notification just in case.

Stock messaging app not displaying text messages

So I don't know if it's just me, but I noticed lately that my stock messaging app doesn't display all my text messages. For example, twice today someone sent me a message, and twice they were wondering why I never replied. I do have my sprint number set as my Google voice number, but I hardly ever use the google voice app to send text messages. Oddly enough, all my messages are displayed in my Google voice app, so I did receive them. Does anyone have am idea why the stock messaging app just doesn't display some messages?
Your going to have to uninstall and deactivate your Google voice. For some reason, no matter what setting you have Google voice, it will intercept all your calls and text.
I had to deactivate my Google voice account and wait the recommended 15 minutes. Reboot your phone and you should be fine.

You can still keep using Voice for voicemail while having text messages get handled by Sprint. Here's how:
First, deactivate Google Voice so we can start from scratch: Voice > Settings > Sign Out

Reboot (this is important). This should allow you to already have text messages working but to also have voicemail working in perfect harmony, do this:
Open up Google Voice again but follow my instructions for activating it. In the first screen hit skip NOT next. Next will activate Voice with full settings -- we don't want that:
Select your account and hit sign in. Hit Next and select how you want it to handle international calls (I chose mine to ask me every time). Hit Next and touch the 'dial *284066466449' button and wait for it to go through. Then go back and hit configure, select Google Voice.
To verify that you did it right, your Google Voice account (if you go into it with your browser -- voice.google.com) should look like mine:
Notice there is no 'text messages' or anything like that on the left hand side or tabs. If that doesn't work let me know and I'll look into it more. I had this issue before and it was annoying. Couldn't find a solution until I messed with it myself.
EDIT: After re-setting up Voice (had to disable it for screenshots ) I noticed that it now has a setting to allow messaging app to deal with texts. Settings> Notifications> Receive text messages through messaging app.
I can't vouch for that method, however.
It's not Google voice. It's the Evo. I don't have Google voice and I don't receive texts from at least three differ people. I been pissed about it for days. I'm about to download a messaging app and see if that help

In his case it is Google Voice (probably, since they do show up in Voice). With you, I would recommend profile update but if you already did that, early on some people were having issues with phone going into roaming and getting texts late or not at all. Re provisioning the phone fixed it.

Google Voice Issue: Multiple threads for the same contact are created

So I recently returned to android after about a year's absence.
I was hoping this issue with google voice had been worked out, especially as I am about to do a full convert/port to google voice. I searched a bit but couldnt find an answer.
So the same contact will text me but often times google voice will create multiple threads making it very annoying to sift through them on the Voice SMS Inbox. It does this also on my browser window. Its not 100% of the time, but almost seems like if its a text on another day, another thread is made. Is there a way to fix this or merge the threads under the same contact?
Any ideas? I also posted on the google forums so if I find an answer I will keep everyone apprised because Im sure others have had this issue.
Thanks!
Here is a screenshot of what I mean (see the multiple threads from the same person "rachael").. Surely someone else out there has experienced it and knows what to do..
I have read some people just archive the old texts, which I guess is a decent temporary fix. One friend with an iPhone uses several apps to work it out, but they arent on android. Seems old this problem can be remedied on the iPhone but not the Google android OS.

I'm also having this issue. Someone told me that emptying your texts and inbox solved the issue for them. It had something to do with a bug in google voice for older accounts that was fixed for new accounts going forward. Maybe that may solve your problem. Another thing you could look into is using Talkatone. It manages your Google Voice SMS too.

gosh I'd hate to delete everything in the inbox, but maybe if that will fix it..
I have had the gvoice account for several years, i might create a new one and see if that fixes it or something.
Let me know what you find out, if cleaning out your box works.
Before you do that try downloading and installing Talkatone. Talkatone manages your Google Voice texts too.
Thanks.
Hmm I had tried talkatone a few months ago and it didnt work as well as sipdroid with my setup for voip.
Maybe I will give a second chance. Also the issue would still persist on google voice in browser right?
UPDATE:
I started a new google voice number with a different gmail but the same problem persists.. Quite annoying
3-4 months going and still this unbelievably annoying issue.. Im surprised more google voice users out there arent tearing their hair out.. I have submitted feedback and suggestions several times to google..
Gawwwwwwww
I have the same issue, and yes it's annoying when trying to find old texts, but as a workaround, I forward all GV texts to my regular number. The stock messaging app doesn't have this issue. This might not work though if GV is your only number.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G
Thanks. I have thought about that (through google integration apps) but I send at least 50% of my texts from the browser on my computer and I think if I forwarded all the texts to stock messaging if I were to send a text it would not sync it with the browser?
If thats not an issue please go into more detail as i would be interested in forwarding the texts to the stock app..
When you forward to your stock app, all your messages come from different numbers. When you text those specific numbers, it goes through GV and is synced with your GV app and browser.Give it a shot, if it doesn't work, you can always set it back

Yes. I have had the same problem with the multiple threads. Its a big pain. That and my outgoing call log that shows the number i dialed and the GV proxy number. WIsh there is a way to hide that proxy number as well as consolidate the text messages.

Works fine here, even after the recent update. Perhaps you should uninstall and then reinstall.
Same. I got this message when installing google voice:

It made me wonder if Verizon was blocking it on purpose to try and get more people to pay for their visual voicemail.
Ok, think I figured it out......I had VZWAVSService disabled. Enabled it and now they play just fine from the call log...

I have disabled VZWAVSService too because it was popping up an error message every time I restarted the phone. I'll have to mess with it and see if I can leave it enabled without getting that error message.
So far having VZservice 're enabled I'm not getting that message anymore. I was getting it in the past which is why like everyone else I disabled it. Seems to be good now and I have restarted the phone several times which is when I would get the message.

I defrosted mine, whatever it is, and it force closes soon after every boot just like it did before. I am currently going through all my Google voice voicemails and they play fine, but I think they were already before I defrosted vzwavsservice. I'll freeze it again and see if Google voice voicemail still works.
There is also some Verizon based voicemail on the phone too.

Still no luck here. I re-enabled the VZWAVSerivce and it still popped up when I restarted with a message like "Unfortunately the service stopped". I even tried deleting the cache for that app and still the same prolem.
Oh well, I get the voicemail notifications from Hangouts and Google Voice app now so it's not I'll ever miss them.

Ok, but did un-freezing it at least allow yo to play your voicemails from your call log? Just trying to pinpoint the reason I couldn't at first. With VZWAVSerivce un-frozen I can still play voicemail from the call log so I'm guessing thats the reason. And I only get the force close message when I restart my phone so I can lie with that.
Im curious to see if those who have un-fromzen VZWAVSerivce have voicemail playing from call log again? Thanks!!
You can always try the new Hangouts with Google Voice integrated. I've frozen the VZWAVService and voicemails work through Hangouts perfectly.

I'm not rooted, so I just disabled it in the application manager. There were no voicemails even listed in my call log anymore... which is weird because I remember seeing them listed before with a little play button next to them when it wasn't working. Maybe that's the problem... Maybe disabling VZWavservice removed all those from the call logs and I need to enable it again and have someone call me and leave a VM to see if it shows up again?

I'm hit and miss on Google Hangouts...been using the new Verizon message app as it sends text over wifi and the app itself is multi platform (OIS,OSX,Android,PC,etc..they make an install-able app for all platforms) I'm not sure if Hangouts sends sms over Wifi and if im correct it only sends actual hangouts over wifi? Does Hangouts save sms and hangouts on the server so if I wipe my phone i can get the messages back? (Verizon message does)
I know its slightly off topic but would love to hear a users opinion on Hangouts.
I read in comments on Play Store from Verizon indications that VZWavservice was a rebranded McAfee antivirus.
It is confusing.

If you have Google Voice turned on in Hangouts, all of your texts and calls are done over wifi/data. From what I've seen, your texts are saved online because they show up everywhere that you have Hangouts installed. The nice thing is that SMS and calls can also be done through the Chrome extension as well.
I just read a further response from Verizon on Google Play for the Verizon Support and Protection app, which is rebranded McAfee AV, in which it is clarified that VWZavservice has unrelated to Verizon Support and Protection. They did not clarify what it IS for though.
Could stand for Address Verification Service.

I wish this was the case but it only seems to happen with the Hangouts messages and Google Voice messages. Any SMS sent through hangouts using your Verizon number doesn't get synced to all your other devices running hangouts. Google really should do that.
It would mean no more backing up and restoring text messages when moving to a new phone.

Ah yes you're right about that. No backup of standard SMS. But Google Voice texts are backed up like you said. I've been using it for so long I don't even think about standard SMS anymore
Well it was working for a while, and now it won't play from my call log anymore. Who knows.....
