I'm loving this bad boy so far. The size is absolutely perfect and fits in my hand like a glove.
Physical/ Build Quality
It actually looks and feels more like the OG Inc then the Inc2. Slightly narrower then the Inc2 but a tad longer and has the same red highlighted speaker above the screen as the OG Inc. It also feels lighter then the Inc2 and, it feels more solid than any HTC to date. The back battery cover doesn't make that annoying squeak and fits tightly . :good:
Camera
Although this doesn't have the same imaging software as the ONE series, it takes pictures amazingly fast. Click, click, click -one right after another.
Beats Audio
Gimmick or not, Music sounds noticeably better on this device than on the Inc2. I'm playing the same FLAC HD files off the same SD card.
Cons
Looks like they did away with the FriendStream widget ?! There's a Twitter HTC widget but no HTC widget for Facebook. Only the totally lame FaceBook widget that comes with the FaceBook app. I like having the Twitter and Facebook feeds combined in the FriendStream widget. Bummer . . .
Price
I paid $106.99 (including tax) for the device as a "Buddy Upgrade" on my company's business account. They applied the $50 rebate directly to the purchase.
I haven't gotten one yet but I'm pissed that, at least according to the website, the phone isn't global ready. WTF?? The DINC 2 was global ready right? And this chip supposedly has GSM capabilities built in. So why not make it global ready from day one?
Verizon is getting on my last nerve...first they pass on the One series and put out this phone with inferior specs, then they jerk everyone around waiting for the release so they can screw us on the plan, then they don't make it global ready when the hardware clearly supports it. I don't get it. I'm going the europe next month and was looking forward to using the phone over there.
Verzion already has said they will send out a software update to make it globally complient in very near future. It has the hardware to support it inside of it.
Yeah, I didn't buy one either for the above reason. They told me in the store today it wasn't gsm capable at the moment.

LOL...with Verizon the very near future could be a year from now.
And by the way, is it just a coincidence that they send out this OTA to the original DINC that is throwing everyone's phone into a constant reboot loop a week before the new DINC 4G comes out? The timing is a little suspicious. I get the stupid notification like every half hour, hoping the thing will eventually just go away.

No worries. I actually have a gripe already -looks like they did away with the FriendStream widget ?! I picked up one this morning to replace my galaxy nexus. (By the way, does anyone want a nexus)
So far I love it. I wanted a 4g phone that wasn't as big as a surf board. I don't need a huge screen as I will never watch TV or anything on it so this is perfect.

im sure we can fix that easily given that friendstream does exist for sense4 on the other phones
Honestly if I didnt miss school 2 weeks ago, I would leave work and go straight to picking this phone up. I wonder should I do that.... hmmm....

Are we sure it isn't in there? That it is a deal breaker for me, FriendStream is the best feature of Sense for me.

Did anyone try the back door method the rezound has? This is one of the features I was wanting as well. Here is how the Rezound works.
(*#*#4636#*#* in dialer, then phone information) there is a option for "Global Mode" and ones for "WCDMA Only" and "GSM Only"

So that's all it takes to turn on global mode? Do you have to be rooted?
I think you have to pre-pay for data from verizon before you go right? Like $25/100 mb. So they wouldn't care that you went in and turned on global mode yourself?

Was a longtime user of several phones, including Dinc2, and Rezound.
Picked up the 4g lte today, and I gotta say from the limited time I have with it, I am enjoying it. The biggest plus so far is the nice sharp screen. In fact, I like it more than the rezound's 720 p screen because this one is NOT scaled, so everything looks nice and crisp, and the fonts aren't too big.
Sense 4 on this phone seems pretty snappy and smooth, minimal if any lag on certain scrolls, but they are rare. Haven't made phone calls yet. 4g (here in LA county) is variable in terms of speed... from 300 KB/sec to 1.1 MB/sec. I think that is maybe more related to network congestion.
Form factor of the phone is basically the same as the Dinc2, which is a good thing, but I find this one to be easier to hold in my hands, with softer edges. Also, buttons are easier to press than the Dinc2, which is a plus. Battery door easy to open, and doesn't have flex/creaking. Another nice feature is that the SIM tray and SD card tray are both on the side of the phone, so you don't have to remove the battery to access anything, only the back cover.
All in all, I am pleased so far. Hope to continue the enjoyment, and hopefully will see some nice interest in this phone. Only question remaining is whether the bootloader will be unlocked (either by HTCdev, or otherwise). Honestly, though, Sense 4 on this phone is pretty snappy and quick, so I can overlook this even if we don't get AOSP. But nothing wrong with more options, of course, thanks to any and all devs who know how to cook roms, because I sure don't know how to.
Thanks for reading!

I understand that you initial posters have your shiny, new phone that you paid for, so please don't flame me for offering what the OP suggested, ie: initial thoughts.
I used the phone briefly in the Verizon store today. I have lots of experience with Sense, having used and rooted both a Droid Incredible and an HTC Rezound. That said, I should state that my bias leans toward Senseless and ASOP roms.
Compared to my Rezound running ConRom, I found the Incredible 4G on Sense 4 to be laggy when it came to screen transitions, ie: opening/closing the market, updating apps, transitioning between Sense home screens, etc. I'm not one of those "The Rezound is the best Android phone out" guys either. I was honestly hoping that this phone would be a significant upgrade over the Rezound. If I still had the ability to keep unlimited data and burn my existing upgrade, my choice would still be either the Rezound or the Galaxy Nexus.
I am envious of the Incredible 4G due to it's form-factor. It's feels great in the hand, light but not too light, and has the same nice rubberized-texture that the Inc 2 and Rezound have.

I wasn't running ComRom on my Rezound but so far my experience has been the exact opposite. The Incdreble 4G has had no lag like the Rezound does. Plus, Sense 4 runs circles around the Rezounds version of Sense.
Besides, It's hardly a fair comparison to pit a custom ROM against stock anything.

Global mode is something different. What I am talking about is buying a prepaid sim overseas or using it with t-mobile/att&t. The command doesn't work because Verizon disabled it but if you download the Thunderbolt LTE on/off app in the play store you can change it to GSM only. The options are there so the phone is capable like everyone said. I just got back from receiving the phone and the app works in switching to 3G. The sim for this phone is now a micro-sim so for someone to test they would need to trim a regular sim and put it in. This settings works for voice only. To send SMS and MMS, we need a dev to fix the ROM. That's how they did it with the Rezound. Or we wait for Verizon to enable all the functionality.
So far I am liking the phone. It's more like the original incredible than the incredible 2.
Related
So i called in about the issues with phone calls and I got offered an Droid X2, Droid Incredible 2 and an Droid Charge if i go in store. The tech said he'd personally go with the Droid Incredible 2 as a different brand since Sammy Fascinate was giving me issues and that coverage for 4G LTE was a little spotty due to it being a new technology and all, so he'd personally wait about a year more till he would get anything 4G related. Which makes sense.
So just wondering for the people that have made the switch to either the droid charge or the droid incredible 2 due to missed calls and text (which were utterly annoying... especially when the said calls got somehow forwarded to someone else(?!)), which ones did you guys decide and why?
I'm wondering is the droid incredible 2 has better hardware wise and snappier due to the extra ram or would the droid charge beat the droid incredbile 2 because of the hummingbird processor after changing it from an rfs filing system to ext4? Though from what I've heard and talked to, the charge is the same overall GPU and CPU as the fascinate just with updated 4G LTE radio and an Super Amoled Plus screen... and is the SLCD screen any good???
I can't quite decide which one to get as I'm kinda iffy on getting another samsung product.. especially if it were basically the same as the fascinate. I love my fascinate but having multiple missed calls without notification and forwarded ones is just plain bad.. . I have (or so says the coverage map..) 4G in my area but realistically I highly doubt its applicable since apparently I'm on the EDGE of 3G coverage radius so 3G is horrible for me. Though if 4G actually is covered much better than id have to go with that since coverage is better than no coverage.
Please help me decide which one to get and also which one are most of the devs from the Fassy team getting-for the ones with the same issue as others?
Thanks.

So I went ahead and got the Droid Incredible 2 and I say I couldn't be happier with it because HTC Sense looks really nice for usability but also the fact that the launcher looks and acts good!! I'm so glad, done with TW! I will miss my SAMOLED screen though.. but I can still upgrade and I'm sure by that time HOPEFULLY they'll have something along the lines of Galaxy S2! That would be nice..
Thanks for all of you guys help!! Hope I made the right choice, though I seem to think I did haha. Anybody know a good case and skin to go with it??
EDIT: just got Miui mtb Tom on my phone and boy does MIUI look sexy on the fascinates screen.. and it runs real smooth with no problems on the ec09 modem surprisingly. I wish I had done this earlier... now I'm going to miss this screen and miui running on it.. it looks so nice haha. Tempted to switch from the dinc2 to the charge just for the screen itself running MIUI but I'm pretty sure I know I want some of that good HTC integration with Facebook lol.. . I'm well surprised with MIUI.. even though I somehow didn't get voodoo to correctly convert the phone. :/

I took the offer for a Charge the other day due to the problems with my Fassy, so I don't have it yet. That said, both are very nice phones. I've seen and played with the Dinc2 and its SLCD screen definitely gives the SAMOLED a little competition. It's also a little faster/snappier which is mostly due to the newer 1ghz processor it comes with as well as HTC's Sense UI (which I waaaaaay prefer over Touchwiz). The front facing camera (and better 8mp back camera) as well as global capabilities are nice as well. The Charge has it beat in the screen department with the SAMOLED+ screen and the data speed department with 4G, but seems to be a little big and bulky yet thin. Also some people don't like the physical buttons on the bottom instead of capacitive ones but they work nicely. It has the same front facing camera, back camera, and newer generation 1ghz processor but also includes HDMI out. Both come stock with 2.2 FroYo, however I'm hearing new Dinc2's are shipping with 2.3 Gingerbread which means no rooting/roms (for now ). If you have 4G coverage I would say Charge as it is arguably one of the best phones VZ has at the moment.

i too went with the charge.. the SAMOLED+ screen is stunning, no other phones have screen quality and vibrance of samsung.. the charge also has 512mb of formatted ram as to wear the fascinate, has like 386 formatted. so a lil more ram, lil faster prossesor a bigger screen FFC HDMI out and 4G i dont see how anyone is having trouble making this desion.. in my opinion the only thing the INC2 has over the charge is Sense.. but i preffer Aosp so it doesnt matter regaurdless.
Go to verizon and play with both phones. Vzw sent me a dinc2 and a charge. Got the dinc2 on friday and played with it all weekend.
Today my charge arrived and while I was pretty sure I was keeping the dinc2, I ended up falling in love with the charge from the second I turned it on. The screen is bigger than the dinc2 and certainly more crisp. I wouldnt say its a huge difference but the blacks come thru much darker on the charge.
The dinc2 was a bit snappier when scrolling thru home screens or starting up apps. With that said it wasn't a huge difference. Since I had the opportunity to have both phones in my possession I did a little face off. It seemed like the dinc2 was better at scrolling and loading apps, the charge beats the dinc2 in the screen dept. And both phones felt pretty much even in respects to internet browsing off of my home fios wifi.
In the end the choice was made easy for me and boiled down to the 4.3 inch super AMOLED plus screen, Along with the familiarity of samsung. The dinc2 and my fassy are both in a box and on their way back to Texas via FEDEX.
I would highly reccomend going to verizon and toying around with both phones. Ultimately it's gonna boil down to which ever phone works best for you......

I was going thru the same choices this morning so i went to the store and after looking at both i decided on the charge also. Many people in IRC had lots of thoughts about both but they all said in the end its a personal preference. plus if you choose charge you have no choice but to go to the store anyhow.
my inc2 comes tomorrow, kind of excited....should be a nice change of pace from samsung stuff until the sgs2 drops
i'm pretty sure i know the answer here, but can anyone confirm that the charge replacement DOES or DOES NOT come with the pre installed 32g SD Card, required SIM Card and standard charging cables?
I gotta ask. Do you keep your phone until the replacement arrives or do they take your phone and your SOL until it comes?

I did the same as nitsuj. Decided to go dinc2 and take a break from Sammy. After playing with both on wifi ...I liked the dinc2 more.
With the added ram ..I felt the dinc2 was more snappy and responsive. On web pages, I felt the dinc2 scrolled much easier.
I agree...you can't beat the samoled ...but the slcd on dinc2 is good enough for me. I also likes the shape opposed to the charge.
Sadly...root is not an option on phones shipped with gb ...but I was extremely pleased with stock performance...and I have faith that eventually the dinc2 will get root.
As for all of the guys such as myself who are active on irc ... we should all plan on sticking around to help each other since the fascinate community is 2nd to none.

Am I the Only person who got a Perfect Amaze with No defects?
I LOVE THIS FREAKIN" PHONE
Only thing, that pink TMO Goodbye animation on power down , its got to go, they could have made it blue, yeah, yeah I know - TMO likes pink, easy fix when Rooted & S-OFF
Come on people, some of the comments are something else, guess your previous phone was absolutely Perfect from first boot, there was not need to root or personalize them in anyway.
I went from a G2x to the Amaze. G2x was awesome, rooted with CM7 and it was exactly what I wanted in a phone, except for the fact that the camera in the G2x was awful and even with a custom rom, it would still lock up.
As soon as I root my Amaze and uninstall sense and the other bloatware preinstalled (seriously 31 apps preinstalled I have 0 use for) this device will be near 100% perfect for me.
My only fear is that the camera app is tied into sense and freezing that will mess that up, but we'll just have to see, unless someone who's already done it can attest.
Yes, I am really enjoying this phone. There's so many things I like about it. Especially those two little camera buttons. I have the white model and its absolutely gorgeous. I honestly have no reason to root right now. If you were to install a custom Rom you would lose a lot of features. The camera would have a lot less function without the built in Sense features.
Sent from my HTC_Amaze_4G using XDA App
I am with you on that - this baby is something else, just needs a little de-bloat, though I cannot see any lag at all even with all the default SF
Only thing I have planned after root is some of my favorite apps for rooted phones
I did eventually get my MT4G running like a dream, the Amaze is like my MT4G on a double dose of Roids - right out the box
Perfect size phone & screen, I dislike Tablets, the Amaze is a great tweener.
Sent from My Virtuous MT4G - While conditioning Amaze battery - see if that battery memory thing does work
Are you confirming that the features for the camera are tied to sense or are you sepculating?
I have no intentions of going for a custom rom at this point, I just want to freeze sense and a bunch of other bloat. I was able to lag the phone significantly by installing launcher pro, but I think it was fighting sense the whole time.

Make sure its not the mem card itself, I have had a couple bad ones here and there

I tried 3 different ones I have from my G2 and Nexus 1, on those phones, it works fine, on the Amaze, it gives me these errors:
Damaged SD Card
Removed SD card
It won't let me mount or format them through the phone. I formatted them through the computer fine but the phone won't read them. Brought it to the T-Mobile store they said they'll replace the phone.. so hopefully it's just my unit..

Well the card I used was never used in a previous phone, was in a camera, doubt if that would be any issue at all, should not be one - post an update when you get the replacement

I'm familair with them and have used some of them, I just didn't know if they were linked to the actual SENSE app, or if it was built into it's own camera apk.
If they are linked, then I can live without them, but it would be nice to keep if I could. I'll just have to check for msyefl.
I'm happy so far but I may have a concern with the camera while using flash. On most pics I take with the flash, there is haze or a halo effect on the photo. It looks like a fog that is thinner at the center and thickens out near the edge. It seems to be worse when the subject is at close range, and it seems to vary in amount from pic to pic. Photos without the flash are fine.
I see nothing on the lens and there isn't anything around the lens/ led flash area. I'm going to stop into T-Mobile and check the demo unit for the same effect.
Otherwise happy. I really want to root for Titanium Backup though.

Wow! My second Amaze!!! Gotta return it again! First one was the SD card issue, the second one fixed it! Second one... the soft buttons has two spots where the screen would shine through? Like they didn't coat the screen right... So annoying..

These T-Mo apps how much space do they really take up? Is it worth all the trouble with "unlocking bootloader" and rooting the phone for a noob like me?
I´m coming from a Desire wich has minimal internal memory to this Amaze with 16Gb (I know i´s not that much irl).
It´s just that I am so annoyed with all these apps I cant even use.
yes this phone is amazing, the onlly thing i dont like about sense is that my wallpapers dont move like all my other phones did, so i cant use all my old wallpapers. Other than that this phone is exactly what i expected it to be

Umm... May want to rephrase that... I use a custom rom that still uses sense as well and has all the camera features so... Custom rom does not equal loss of camera features or sense for that matter... Also I am pretty sure one could have a stripped sense rom and still maintain camera functionality...

I really loved my sensation and the amaze is what my sensation never was a phone without flaws. People complain bout the lights bleeding into the screen but I don't have that issue I like my screen looks great. The device feels awesome in my hand and the heft is perfect. The camera is best I ever had front and back. Most people will complain about sense but I like it until ics I dislike stock android its missing some Polish and ease with its features like dialer, contacts, camera, music player etc... Hate that I'm giving up my amaze and selling it hoping the galaxy s 2 is ok but hoping to pick up an amaze later again this really is a great device wish more devs picked it up to see its value and HTC was more friendly to our devs. Thank god for x!
Edit: what I absolutely hate about my amaze!! The fact that it looks and feels so good bare that I never want to use my case but have to so that it can stay looking so good.

I've been with Sprint for over 10 years, the last 2 of which I've had an HTC Evo 4G (rooted). I'm looking to switch over to Verizon in the next week or so and I'm leaning towards the Motorola Droid Razr Maxx (unless someone has a better suggestion for a top-of-the-line Android offering). I'm looking for some advice/suggestions on how to make the switch - I have Titanium Backups for all of my apps - is it possible to restore these on the Droid Razr Maxx if I root this too? Also, I'm very used to HTC Sense on the Evo 4G - how will this impact the switchover, and is it possible to flash a Sense ROM on this new Verizon phone? Sorry if any of these questions are dumb, I've been stuck in the Sprint world for so long, I don't know what's going on outside of it.
Thanks for any help in advance!
Sorry for the double post, please feel free to delete this thread.
I just made the same switch! A few things about this device... No, you cannot run a sense rom on this device, and I dont believe titanium back-ups will work either (havent tried myself, but I'd be surprised if they do work)
I always used go launcher on my evo, and have done the same with my razr, so the switch-over wasnt all too noticeable for me in that regard. If it must look like sense, there are multiple clock widgets in the market that will give you the sense clock and weather look.
I havent rooted yet, but from what I've read, its a bit more involved than the evo, and there really arent very many custom roms available. Not too big a deal for me, as the only reason I rooted my evo, was because sprint released updates that caused issues with my evo, and wanted the option to downgrade from the terrible update. The razr seems to work just fine out of the box. We will be getting an update to ICS soon, and I will wait to read the forums, and see if its just as functional before I update myself.
I was very happy when I made the switch! Sprint always treated me great, but the network is just not as good as verizon's, at least not up here in Maine! I spent a lot of time roaming with sprint, and even when on the sprint 3g network, speeds were horrible, calls would drop, etc... Now, I get full signal most places I go, no roaming and slow speeds. Add the 2days minimum I get outta the battery on my razr compared to the 6hrs I got on my evo, and I wont be looking back!
I may be wrong, but I think TB should work for your user apps. I just used TB between three different phones, because I didn't feel like downloading the apps I wanted.

Thanks! So what are the main benefits to having root with this phone, if there aren't many ROM's available? Their hotspot is already free with the plan, correct (or at least it will be with their new pricing options, which will be available on 6/28)?
Edit: I guess that's a dumb question, because I'll still have the option of restoring my apps with TB, as well as continuing to back them up from then on....not to mention removing bloat, etc... But when I rooted my Evo, the two main reasons were to try out different ROMs and to use the hotspot, both of which seem like they'll be non-issues with this phone.
I am currently in the same situation and extremely torn.
I was on the Evo 4G with MikG 3.11. The phone worked perfectly and the development was great as you know. Never had to worry about data caps/overages and generally got enough coverage and speed to really bother me too much.
Then the wife broke her screen on her Evo and the 4g LTE came out. I gave her mine and upgraded to that one. First one was a complete mess and wasn't even assembled right. The second didn't work well either with WiFi bouncing and random bugs. Couldn't get a third one as Sprint won't replace after one return. (Best buy said the same thing when I got the Razr BTW).
After the Sprint run around I said screw it and dumped them. The Razr was a let down at first in two ways. The rom on my OG Evo was miles ahead of the stock Razr. Playing with the promises of the LTE Evo was pretty awesome just too buggy. I do like sense as well. Lot's more polish and I personally don't get the sense bloat people talk about. My current Razr (and the wife's) is on par response wise as my old Evo.
Sure the battery is cool and more memory is nice but it doesn't really feel like an upgrade. Maybe the fabled ICS update might help with polish and performance. Who knows?
My biggest worry is the higher price of Verizon monthly and the data cap. Best Buy told me there was a promo going on for 4gigs for the price of 2gigs. Well I called today inquiring about it and guess what. Nope that special was over when I bought my phone. Now more horse **** to deal with. (Probably never should have left sprint, oh well).
I now don't feel as free with this one due to the data cap. When I spoke with Verizon rep today he told me if I streamed stuff moderately, used navaigation etc. I would probably go over. And yes for some reason during that 4 day period before my regular monthly period started my wife and I were at one gig. Great. Remember even though I had Sprint their speeds are pretty crappy so was used to using WiFi a lot. But now i am constantly looking at that stupid widget.
I don't know what I am going to do. I have had four dropped calls today on verizon and my GPS wouldn't connect two days ago. I was relieved when I found the place with my own sniffer and I saved some precious data! But I don't think that is really how I should have felt.
I hate US cell companies. Really hate em. And yes I would drop it if I didn't have to work. Now I am going to go stick my head in a dead tree and twist. Stupid cell phones. Promise so much and try so hard to not deliver.

Sense analog clock widget, fancy widgets, animated weather widget, clock ... Gotta be at least 20 in the play store...
Just an FYI.
So far over the weekend including Friday day I was able to use over one gig of data and 311 minutes on talk time. The Verizon rep said I would have to call back when the billing cycle actually printed to bill to know my actual bill.
Now how the hell was I able to do that when on WiFi all weekend and use minutes as well. That makes no sense at all. Weekends free right for minutes?
Some how today I was able to use 25 Mega bytes on the drive to and from work 15 minutes each way. This isn't my first android and I didn't stream a thing, have all the data set not to do anything unless on WiFi.
Beware.
Now I understand that I'm in a DNA forum, but am trying to get some responses from people who have made the switch. I love the amount of Roms and customization that I have with my s3. I can get 4 hours of screen time easy.
I'm just trying to see what in comparison to the S3 I'll be getting. I know the resolution is better and the quad vs. Dual processor etc.

battery, definitely better on dna. I'm at 65% right now with over 2 hours of screen on time. And this is with full brightness watching yt and playing games.
as you mentioned the screen and processor are better, and this definitely shows. I rarely see a loading screen and games look amazing and can run maxed out no problem
touchwiz vs sense. This is really for you to decide, sense is more polished, professional looking, and customizable on stock, but you loose features of touchwiz
But honestly, it is a decision for you to make. I recommend checking out some comparison videos on youtube
To be honest the battery was scaring me. I had a rezound and that thing was horrible. I don't use touchwiz cause I'm running aokp. I love flashing new ROMs and am scared there aren't going to be many since HTC likes to lock their phones down. I've never been a big fan of sense. I guess I could just install another launcher.
How about the size comparison. I know the specs are almost the same with the DNA a tad thicker.

although the dna is thicker on paper, it feels thinner because of how it is curved
ive had both.
s3 has more options. more roms. easier to unlock.
screen is fancier on the dna.
battery and sd card are up to you. i dont use much space or have ever switched out batteries so im ok.
hugest things for me right now are sense. it does NOT have as many options. it is NOT as polished, imo. its cluttered and illogical compared to the s3. youll see!
for example, no toggles in the status bar. and no options in the settings for it.
HUGEST gripe and a deal breaker if i cant easily root this thing soon (which is another problem. theyre still using adb.) its that the menu key doesnt bring up the menu. it brings up the latest apps. and you cant reroute it. its not in the settings. seriously wtf were they thinking?
and it gets worse. not only does it not work and you cant change it, but to allow you to use the menu in apps, what do they do? THEY PUT HUGE BAR on the screen!!!
its kinda like seeing a really really hot girl who has as all this style and all...and then you realize shes utterly crazy. or its like getting a porche and they take out the steering wheel and replace it with an atari 2600 joystick!
if i cant root this and thus fix this crap fast im taking it back.

1. If you don't know how to use adb you shouldn't even bother with rooting. Just watch the "how to" video at the same time as you're unlocking it. It's pretty damn simple.
2. The menu button you speak of is easily fixed if you root and put a custom rom on your phone. All of the current roms allow you to reroute the recent button to menu/recents, which would get rid of the menu bar on the screen.

thats not a menu button. As per android conventions there is a back, home, and recent apps button(I have no clue what samsung was thinking with their devices with their weird layout). Is it annoying that they took out the option to remap it, sure, but thats what rooting is for. And that black bar only shows up in apps that arent up to ics conventions, so yea, not that big of a deal in the first place.
and that 'hugh' bar, yea thats not htc's doing, its googles
Just so you guys know let's lay some facts out here
1 adb should be a skill before rooting phones like stated above you shouldn't be messing with a phone until you're comfortable with fastboot and adb
2. Verizon dictated the specs not HTC....god knows why Verizon didn't want a remap option available ....
3. My friend has the DNA and my father has the s3... If you're looking for aosp based roms samsung may be you're choice ....I have the one xl and cm10 runs beautifully on it but it's a tad behind other devices....sense grows on you after a while you'll see

You spend so much time looking at your phone's screen, shouldnt you enjoy every second of it
but the batter is a good 30% lower then GS3

I have S3 to compare. International version. The battery life is just a bit better on DNA. The screen, no need to say. Voice quality - HTC is much louder, clear speaker. Network reception quality is better on HTC. Both phones work on GSM. S3 running stock JB, DNA is running ROM. Design, for me DNA is much better designed. Plus, wireless charger is very useful on work desk.

I am able to upgrade from the Rezound to either of these phones (or anything else for that matter). I am up in the air about it. The Galaxy S3 has a big community from what I can see. The only thing that scares me about the DNA is whether the community will be there. The Rezound community is always bickering at each other and every time I turn around, we loose another developer. I rarely even look at the forum any more because there isn't much going on there. When I had my OG Droid Incredible, the community was just flat out kicking ass.
I am going to watch this thread and see if it can help me make up my mind. I may just wait to see what comes out later. Thanks for any more input (and I do realize I'm on a DNA thread).
in my opinion, if you have an s3, i wouldnt make the switch.
the DNA is sweet dont get me wrong, but theres something that still leaves me missing my s3. Sure its only a dual core, but that thing screams. The screen is better on the dna. Not by a ton, but it is better. However, I still prefer the contrast and saturation from super amoled displays. the DNA has superior radios as well. Holds a signal much stronger than the s3. Also, yes, the dev community on the s3 is HUGE as it is a cross carrier phone. I miss that as well. I hate the way sense looks and cant wait to slap an aosp rom on this thing.
I miss the speaker volume from the s3, and Im not a big fan of sense. I actually find that my battery lasted longer on my s3 than it did on this phone.
The power button and charger door flap piss me off as well.
Now dont get me wrong, the DNA is a AWESOME device and Im only nitpicking here. And I will be keeping it. The build quality is superb. But to me, the DNA is not worth the upgrade from the s3 unless you catch a super good deal on one. I managed to get one brand new on Craigslist for 450. I went from a gs3>ip5>DNA, so I just traded my ip5 straight up for a DNA. There are pros and cons to each phone, my advice would be to try them both in store
I went from gs3 to DNA and my biggest worry was battery life, which with identical use between devices has been unfounded. Where I really noticed the difference in the screens was in direct sunlight. The gs3s was hard to see and the DNAs is surprisingly clear. Hopefully a dev community grows here but we've already got some kernel devs. And some stock romsso we are off to a good start. Sweep2wake is awesome. sense does suck (as does touchwhiz imo)
sent from my unlocked and rooted droid DNA
I personally would wait for a bigger upgrade. I don't see much to be excited about on the DNA if you already have the s3 which is a fantastic phone in itself. I love my DNA, but for you that isn't much of an upgrade IMO.
Thanks for all the responses!! I'm leaning towards keeping my s3. One of the big factors is dev support. There are so many ROMs and tweaks since its a cross carrier phone.
I might just keep looking on craigslist or online for a deal. Plus is just read that the galaxy s4 is dropping in march.
sent from my blue police box flying through time!!!
I apologized if I ignore anything or repeat anything that's been said, but I couldn't make it through the first response.
The DNA is substantially worse in battery life when compared to the S3 during use. I could get 16-20 hours with moderate to heavy usage on the S3. The DNA will give me about 11-13 hours with the same usage. When not in use the DNA does at least hold up to the S3, but surprisingly I've only gone down 13% in the last 6 and a half hours.
I've had the S3 for the past 2 months. I've had the DNA for half a week.
What I liked about the S3 was TouchWiz. Not the look of it, but the features. There are too many to list and most of them are useful. Unlocking/rooting is pretty simple once you understand how to use Odin, and you're good from there.
What I like about the DNA is the size. It's definitely just a large smartphone (compared to my Note 2 which is damn big and requires 2 hands for optimum use), and HTC did a great job keeping the rest of the phone tucked into the screen and keep it super thin. The screen looks fantastic. The software... junk. Sense has nothing to offer other than a style, one that I don't find appealing. I'm dying to get an AOSP based ROM on this thing, AOKP would be awesome. Due to VZW blocking it from being unlocked via HTC Dev by default, rooting it is a long process and if ADB is new to you then you'll have a difficult time. Compared to the S3, there's barely any ROM options.
If I had to pick between the two, I'd have a tough time but I'd probably lean towards the DNA based on the large, nice screen, small size (for it's large screen). If battery is more important, there's a good change the S3 will be better. If size doesn't matter and you've got the extra $100, get the Note 2. Won't regret it.
As for the upgrade being worth it? Not unless you're dead-set on getting a new phone.
I have an AT&T HTC One arriving shortly as a new customer on AT&T. I understand I have 14 days to try it out, so I want to make sure I put it to a full test. This will be my first HTC device since the Windows Mobile days, so I have a few questions to ask before starting to use my phone. I am not entirely for sure, but I will probably end up rooting and using custom roms, but probably not until the 14 days are over. With that in mind, here are my questions:
1) Should I unlock the bootloader right away? I understand that doing so erases everything on my phone, but it should not cause any problems if I decide to return the phone, right?
2) If I decide to root after the 14 days are up, I do not have to wipe the phone again, do I?
3) If I decide to use a custom rom, do I understand correctly that I will indeed have to wipe the phone again (but not the /sd card contents???) Meaning, my pictures/videos and all that will remain, but I will have to wipe the system?
4) My area does not yet have LTE (coming later this summer), so is there a way for me to turn it off to save on battery, or do I even need to attempt this?
5) I've been using an iPhone 5 since launch and it is still scratch-free without using a case. I'd prefer not to use a case with the One as well, and I only have my phone in my pocket. Is it reasonable to expect that my One will hold up as well as the iPhone 5 in this area?
Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions,
Travis

Regarding #2, are you saying that if I am already bootloader unlocked and then decide to root at a later time, I *will* have to completely wipe the phone again? Or is it just the initial bootloader unlock that requires the full wipe?
i seriously doubt you will be returning this phone before the 14 days. especially if your coming from the iphone 5. this is the only phone that rivals the build quality of iphones. i have had mine since the release for tmobile and not one scratch on it. my girl has the iphone 5 and imo it cant touch this phone.
if apple and android had a baby it would be the htc one.

No just the initial bootloader unlock unless you decide to change Roms

Well that's exactly what I'm looking for.
I go back and forth between iOS and Android on a yearly basis, it seems. I've had the iPhone 5 since launch on Verizon, and I just returned the Samsung GS4 because it was very laggy and was locking up at least once per day. I'm going to try the HTC One on AT&T (even though the One has just been confirmed for Verizon later this summer) because I am tired of Verizon's policies. I'm tired of them taking longer than anyone else to get phones. I'm tired of their "customizations" like the persistent WIFI notification on the GS4 that no other carrier has. I'm tired of their locked bootloaders and locked down CDMA network. I'm sure AT&T will have its share of frustrations, but LTE is coming in my area this summer and I'm looking to try something different. I'm keeping my Verizon line for now since I have unlimited data on it, but I'm thinking the 5GB plan on AT&T will be more than enough (and I get a 25% discount through my employer).
Thanks for the help, guys.

this phone doesnt lag. probably the closes thing to the smoothness of ios. and yea dont get that cdma garbage from verizon at&t,tmo or developer version is the way to go as far as custom rom options at least for now. if you want more in depth info check out mike1986. review of the phone. he has only done the first part of the review but he is a developer over on the international thread for this phone.

Thanks for the reassurance. The lag on the GS4 was unbearable and even worse than I expected given my previous experience with the GS3 a year ago. Even after turning off every S-feature I could find, enabling the developer options and changing the animations, and disabling as much bloatware as I could, the phone still lagged when scrolling and just felt unresponsive at times.
If I really like it, I don't know how long I'll hold onto my Unlimited Data plan on Verizon. On AT&T, I understand that unlimited data users are throttled after 5GB anyway, right? I think 5GB will be plenty, as I normally hover in the 3-4GB range on Verizon each month (and that's with a good deal of music streaming and Youtube watching). I guess if I go over once in a while, I can afford the $10 for an extra gig now and then.
My only concerns right now are battery life and the buttons. I've seen mixed reports on battery life - some saying it is abysmal, others saying it's actually very good. I'm keeping my expectations tempered as I've just been using two of the better phones in this area (iPhone 5 and GS4). I'm not expecting battery life to be as good as those, but if it can last my through my 8 hours of work (no WIFI there), then I'll be okay.
The buttons, I'm sure I'll get used to. But I'm definitely looking forward to the 4.2.2 update that allows for the long press of Home for Menu, right? Will this also give you the option to get rid of the Menu bar that appears below non-standard apps that don't conform to Google's specs?
For those who are still engaged with the conversation, I have a few more specific questions about customizing if you don't mind... Since this is my first HTC Android device, there are some terms and methods I am not familiar with. I've used the Galaxy Nexus and the GS3 in the past and was able to understand enough to unlock the bootloaders and install custom roms on those devices. However, when reading about the HTC One, there are some things I do not yet understand:
1) I understand that the AT&T, T-Mobile, and International versions are basically identical hardware-wise, right?
2) What is CID, Hboot, and RUU? I don't remember having to deal with any of those terms with the Nexus and GS3. All I understand about the HTC One so far is that I need to unlock the bootloader at HTC's website. I'm sure I can also follow the instructions to root the device. Installing recoveries and custom roms is where things start to get a little foggy for me with this device.
3) I'm probably going to want to stick with a stock rom of some type because I am actually looking forward to some of the HTC features (especially with the camera). If the "Android Experience" rom still has some of the custom software for the camera, etc, then I might be interested in that. Otherwise, I just want to be rooted at 4.2.2 with a debloated device running as smoothly and as stable as possible.
Thanks!

1- yes pretty much the same
2- cid is your phone id which tells you what ruu you need. ruu is the stock rom your phone came with. hboot you really dont need to worry about until we get s-off
3- all the custom sense roms include all the htc features so no worries there
---------- Post added at 10:22 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:55 AM ----------
and btw with the battery life when i first got my htc one battery life was average at best but after a few battery cycles it improved.
first week probably averaged about 10-12 hrs with 6hrs on data with the rest wifi
second week 15-20 hrs with 6 hrs data
after that it pretty much leveled out and i average around 30 hrs 6 hrs on data and anywhere from 4-7 hrs screen time and all data is lte i dont turn data to 4g or 3g to save battery. so the first 7-10 days you might be cutting it close to get through the day on a single charge. a lot depends on signal strength though. i think most of those bad battery threads were from people who just got the phone and battery wasnt good at first. might also be because of stock rom. i flashed a custom sense rom the first day i got the phone
Ok, I got my HTC One today and so far I am loving it! However, I am disappointed to see that there is a persistent notification for "Power Saver". Argh, on the GS4 there was a persistent notification for WIFI (on Verizon), and now this one. What is it with these guys and their non-removable persistent notifications? I guess they think people are that stupid (and maybe most are on), but there should at least be an option to turn it off.
So from what I'm reading, the only thing I can do is to force close it each time, or to root my device and install a mod? Really?

yea pretty much but not really an issue for me because i never intended to stay stock
oh and btw s-off has just been released in the international forum so you might want to keep an eye over there. with that you will be able to go back to complete stock without any trace of unlocking and rooting
hows the smoothness for you? i know your an iphone guy and i would like to hear your feedback

Yeah, I'm not too worried about the notification either because I will eventually root and rom... not for a while though.
I am in love with the design of the phone, to be an honest. I feel it tops my iPhone in almost every way in terms of hardware. The iPhone is still more smooth, but I think it's more a matter of Apple prioritizing the touch response and animations over everything else. The One is definitely more smooth than the GS4, though, and I noticed that right away. The Facebook app still stutters, but I think that's just Facebook's fault... it stutters if you scroll before everything has loaded.
I've set up Nova launcher with a shortcut to Blinkfeed (which I actually like). Disappointed that I can't use the HTC widgets in Nova, but I'm finding replacements. Charging the battery now (which I read takes longer than average), and tonight at work will be my first "real" test with the phone.
Thanks for replying.

you can make another screen your home screen with sense launcher so you dont have blinkfeed in your face everytime you unlock the phone. and just so you know i just tried the s-off and it works on my tmo htc one. i successfully got s-off tampered removed and supercid. its confirmed working for at&t also

Yes, I figured out the Blinkfeed thing. Right now I am using Nova Launcher with a shortcut to Blinkfeed when I want to use it. The only thing bad about using Nova is that a bunch of the HTC widgets are not there anymore to use. Power toggles, Clocks/Weather, FM Radio widget, etc are all missing when using Nova Launcher. I understand that HTC widgets are only visible when using the Sense launcher? That's a bummer...
So explain again what the advantage of s-off is? Just so you can go back to completely stock if something goes wrong?
I think I will wait for this upcoming 4.2.2 OTA before deciding whether to unlock my bootloader and/or root. I'll take the time right now just to learn the phone and start reading all of the forums.

with s-off and supercid you can install the ruu/ota from any htc one variant except sprint/verizon. but you could use the international ota which is 4.2.2

Ah, I see. With the AT&T OTA update rumored to be coming out in the next week or two, I think I'll just wait right now before jumping in.
Ironically, LTE just lit up in my area (Quad Cities, Davenport IA area) last night, so I was able to try that out as well!
So my first night at work with the new phone was very successful. Here are some things I noticed when comparing the One to my normal usage on the iPhone 5 with Verizon:
- LTE speeds on AT&T were comparable to Verizon at my workplace. However, AT&T had better penetration because my iPhone (and past LTE Android phones) would drop down to 3G deep inside the building, whereas AT&T stayed on LTE the whole time. In fact, I think the One has only dropped down to 4G (HSPA+) one or two times since I got it, whereas the Verizon phones constantly change between 3G and LTE.
- Battery life on the One was surprisingly good! My normal 8-hour shift consists mostly of playing Doggcatcher podcasts at 1.5 speed through Bluetooth headphones. I also use the phone on my breaks, along with a bit of Hotspot tethering for my iPad. With my iPhone 5, I'm normally at 40-50% battery life when I leave work, and the One was right about there as well. I would say that the One is very efficient when the screen is off, but a bit of a sucker when using the screen. That's to be expected, especially with that nice bright screen. Overall, I am very pleased and quite relieved to discover that I'll make it through a day of work no problem.
- The speakers are amazing! This is the first phone I can actually listen to music on without cringing. Having the speakers in the front of the phone is huge advantage as well. The iPhone 5 is no slouch in the audio department, but the One is noticeably better.
- I like the screen better on the One compared to the Galaxy S4. The latter has better blacks and contrast, but lacks color accuracy and is practically unviewable outdoors. I am definitely getting spoiled by these high DPI displays! The extra screen real estate on the One compared to the iPhone is liberating. Apple needs to release a larger screen iPhone now - not next year - because nobody who uses the larger 1080p screen is ever going to go back to the puny 4" screen again.
More thoughts later...

As you start reading up on the forums you may find the posts about how AT&T "fluffs" the signal. I am running the international trick droid ver 7.0.0 and it does have the same speed just the signal bar is not tweaked for simulated better signal. Also this rom has build options to remove the three dot menu as well as debloat and turn off power save notification. It runs like butter no laggs. I dont have or use FB so i cant speak for it. Keep us posted on how you like it.
