How Do Updates Work? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've complained to Sprint on the delay of ICS for the EVO 3D. They have told me that they don't have the software and are unable to send it. Also they have told me that they have no control when HTC will send the upgrade to them.
Now, this makes no sense to me. I would think that Sprint has something to do with this and it's not just a HTC issue. In fact, HTC told me that it's a joint effort between them and Sprint, which makes sense to me.
This BS with the update is really making me consider getting a Galaxy Nexus for my next phone. But, I have concerns about Sprint just refusing to let the update happen, which is what I think is going on with the EVO 3D ICS update.
So, to my question, how do system updates work?
Sent from my HTC EVO 3D using Tapatalk 2

I truly don't believe its a sprint issue at this point. HTC has been less than forthcoming about updates for the 3d (or any HTC phone, for that matter).
I'm sure sprint has to QC check and approve/push the update (and probably has final say as to whether or not the update gets pushed at all) but I'm fairly certain the ball is in HTCs court right now.
Then again, this is 100% opinion and speculation on my end - I'm probably completely off base.

Oh yeah, that. That's been known for a while.
Regardless, that still gives HTC 25 more days before they have to provide sprint with software to test (assuming that is, in fact, the way it works - I still don't know) just to be compliant with their own schedule. On top of that, sprint will have to test and approve the update before pushing it out.
IMO, I think we'd see leaked RUUs for sprint if they actually had a functional ROM in testing right now. But at the same time, we've got the leaked ROM from virgin mobile, so who knows?
Either way, I'm glad I jumped ship and left sprint
Sent from my HTC One X

Ok, so I just revisited the 3d forums for the first time since jumping ship.
I revise my opinion. Based on the fact that pretty much every other carrier seems to be receiving OTA updates (based on the massive number of threads in the general forum), I'm gong to go ahead and assume that sprint has, in fact, dropped the ball on this one.
Sent from my HTC One X

I would assume that once HTC finally developes the updates, Sprint test it and adds/deletes anything they want to before it is released to the end user.

Ok, yes, we agree that Sprint sucks on getting the upgrade out.
However, my question still stands. How Do Updates Work? I'm presuming that Google sends the upgrade to HTC, they make it work on their OS. Then they send it to Sprint, which makes their changes to work on their network and then they deliver the update.
Anyone got a clue?

EVO V 4G

What the heck is the deal with the new EVO V 4G on Virgin Mobile. This phone is literally the exact same that we are using and it comes with an OFFICIAL ICS update. We EVO 3D users still do not have a truly official ICS update, so what the heck? Why don't original EVO 3D owners have a ICS upgrade while owners of the exact same phone with a different name do. WTF HTC?!?!? First HTC phone and probably last; the lack of support(dev included, compared to other phones of the same calibre) is just ridiculous. Looks like the next google device is the way to go.

Have you even checked out the dev section lately?
Sent from my ICS lovin 3D!!!
Oh yea... I'm a *****. Haha!
Sprint did this to keep the production and life of the EVO 3D going, just on a "different" carrier. Even when I called Sprint to have my EVO 3D replaced a couple weeks ago, they were going to try and figure out a way to send me a Virgin Mobile 3D and get it working on Sprint (Yeah, they actually said that. Then I told them, 'I'm pretty sure you guys can't do that.')
This way the EVO 3D and WiMax lives on for a little longer, and they can usher in the LTE with their new lineup. WiMax will be a hand-me-down to Virgin Mobile eventually, just like the EVO 3D is to them, and the EVO Design is to Boost.

This is defeating the purpose of the OP. Again, I've said this before.. HTC fails when it came to this phone. The customer service is piss, they are boosting there PR, and making us suffer.
Oh hey you want ics too bad, root and install a Custom rom. Defeats the purpose of everything HTC. People complain that to make the iphone like a HTC they have to jailbreak it, we'll, HTC is doing the same thing with their phones.. People are to blind to see it.

Can't blame the developers for the degree of difficulty it takes to make custom roms for this phone without sources. I can honestly say if it wasn't for the 3d camera stuff, this phone would have a hell of a lot more development. Now HTC has been sandbagging as far a source code and kernel information and this is making me look more and more at the Galaxy S3 vs the Evo Lte.

I know there are ics roms available based on leaks... But the point is support your flagship devices first. That's in part why people buy them.
I am running a ics rom and there are some bugs. The one that bothers me is the front camera reversing pics. And then there was the fact no one knew the firmware messed things up for a lot of us. Sprint and htc need to support us first or we won't buy their flagship again.

I am running an ICS ROM and there are absolutely no bugs at all. The front camera reversing the pics was an instagram bug, not ICS and blaming anyone but yourself for flashing the VM firmware is just plain silly. If you want to blame anybody, blame sprint. The reason that VM got ICS is because Sprint didn't have to take a buttload of time adding their crapware to the image and then more time testing it. They should have done what they have done in the past and "leak" the image for us to "test" and find the bugs.

Yes, the firmware was my fault but to be fair some of the first leaks said to flash it for the rom to work. I don't want to offset the blame, but at the time we didn't know much about it and i was impatient (my fault for that).
Anyway... I don't have instagram, never installed it... yet still have that bug. i've had it since a full wipe. Tried 3 different roms... exists in all. so not sure why I have it if others experience it.
I've had that reversed front camera issue for awhile. Doesn't bug me though, it still remains on my current Rom (MikVirgin). Certain camera apps allow you to flip that ffc image, apparently this happens on plenty of other devices also.

Sprint cancelling ICS for 3D?

I heard another strong rumor from another strong source that Sprint is giving consideration to cancelling ICS for 3D and offer an early end to contract as good-gesture solution. I think we can see where this is going, right? Early end of contract = full discount price on the next phone.
I don't want one of those LTE phones until the stupid service is available here in Oregon. Right now, I have tons of WiMax and if switch to LTE, I lose 4G!
Why are we putting up with this crap?!
source?
but i think its crap, desire hd etc got 4.0 too...so fare...
This can't be !!
Why would they do that when the Virgin Mobile version has ICS? It wouldn't bother me though since we have 3.6 and 4.0 (minus 4g) available here now but it sucks because my contract is up in July so I would not reap any of said benefits.
Would like to see a credible source on this rumor.

Rumors. People are too gullible these days.
To pick the other side of this, most people on this forum probably have or will get ics one way or another. So if sprint would give us an early out i would welcome that. You know, when you think about it, sprint has all but kicked us 3d owners out the door anyhow. Try and get a refurb replacement. It's pretty tough right now. I can see how it would save them a bunch of hassles by not doing the update. I love my 3d even more after putting myn's ics on it. If i had an early upgrade i would probably follow him to ss3 land.
I was going to wait for the official update to be released, but it just got tiresome. I like running stock-rooted ROMs, and who knows when Sprint will get their head out of their ass to get this done. I bought my EVO 4G LTE, and it's made me happy now.
I would actually love that, sorry guys.

I wouldn't be surprised in the least if it ends up that we (Sprint 3d users) never see an official ICS but I can guarantee that there will be no "mass" early contract out to make up for that.... Doing so would open the door to a mass exodus from Sprint with no etf. This WILL NOT HAPPEN!

HTC has announced the 3d will get ICS but that means the 3d in general, the Sprint variant of the 3d has never been officially confirmed by anyone, neither HTC or Sprint. The update has to be officially requested to HTC by a carrier on a branded devices. It is entirely possible that Sprint may not do so. The only sure thing is that unbranded GSM 3ds will get ICS. Just sayin.....

I understand that, but we don't even have ICS source for cdma, and we are supposed to get JB? thats more along the lines of what I meant. Either way, I will probably be running a copy of it before sprint even thinks about supporting it. Love the dev's around here!
Moral of the story ...don't post without proof
I don't think HTC will upgrade anything earlier than the one range because essentially they will have to develop two types of ROMs ...for the one series with imagesense and the rest of the range without image sense capabilities.
But you never know, shout enough and maybe they'll listen

Why did HTC leave out the EVO LTE when announcing Jellybean upgrades?

I've noticed that the LTE hasn't been getting too much love compare to what the og evo got when it first came out, but it is still a relatively new phone and the first source dropped not too long ago. But personally, there isn't much I don't have with the rooted stock rom right now. I have EOS JB on my Xoom and other than Google Now, not really missing much based on my usage style.
"This device will be downgraded to Froyo due to Apple patents"
Maybe because HTC has more One X/XL/S/V models sold than Evo 4g lte. Also maybe Sprint never agreed to release JB on the evo 4g lte? I dunno...

the reason why it hasn't been announced is that sprint has partner shop with htc as far as updates goes same reason why the sgsIII received like three updates before we got our first one even tho the evo was put before
Honestly, I don't care. I have a Nexus 7 and it isn't super buttery smooth compared to ICS like the the tech sites are making it out to be. It feels the same to me. Though I feel ICS is as smooth as it gets most of the time anyway except for immediately after unlocking the phone when it has been asleep for awhile. It would be nice to be on the current OS but I don't feel like ICS is a major step back. The notifications of Android 4.1 are nice though.
If Sprint holds true to its past with upgrades we will see it shortly after the next EVO device is launched.
You guys honestly complain so much. What's wrong with the way the phone performs now? Chill out and enough questions about jelly bean. It will come when it comes. This phone is a flagship HTC one X phone for sprint...do you honestly believe we won't get the next one or two (possibly 3) iterations of android?

... it took less than 2 months for the original EVO 4G to updated to Froyo... I'd say that is a better example of Sprint's record with updating a new device, than comparing it to updating devices that are fairly old (the EVO 4G was 6 months old when Gingerbread came out, and was updated about 6 months after that).
They said the One XL will get it, so we can count on the devs to then get it to us from there. No worries.

This phone is a flagship HTC one X phone for sprint...do you honestly believe we won't get the next one or two (possibly 3) iterations of android?

+1!
I'd rather be stuck on ICS forever than have my favorite apps not work properly with JB.
Yes i know its "almost the same" but almost doesn't mean it is. I tried apex on a JB build and it wouldn't even start, so either that build is missing something or its not as almost as everyone makes it out to be.

LTE owners should view this as if they were installing a cumulative Windows Update patch, like SP1, which will fix things... And break things... Such as backwards compatibility with apps.
However, with that being said, I'll be flashing Jelly Bean the same second it is released. CM10 AOSP, where are you?

I've noticed that the LTE hasn't been getting too much love compare to what the og evo got when it first came out, but it is still a relatively new phone and the first source dropped not too long ago. But personally, there isn't much I don't have with the rooted stock rom right now. I have EOS JB on my Xoom and other than Google Now, not really missing much based on my usage style.

Why do people call it "the LTE"? Its an EVO. Other phones have had "LTE" in the name...

Android 4.2 ?

So will the DNA be getting sense 5 and android 4.2 or will they do us like the thunderbolt and forget about it cuz you can buy the one?

I think there is at least an attempt to give one Android update. If you are lucky you get 2. What I mean is aside from security or "fix" updates you will get an Android level update. For instance the Thunderbolt, shipped with 2.2, got an update to 2.3, was lucky to get one to 4.0. Rezound, shipped with 2.3, got an update to 4.0. Now the DNA, shipped with 4.1, should get a 4.2 update. Doubtful it will get a 4.3 (or 5.0) update, but possible. This is just from my experience and observations.

I think HTC will make 2 updates for the GLOBAL DNA phone and possibly one for Verizon, but Verizon will only officially put out 1 update IMO. They won't sink any more $$ into the DNA. But that doesn't matter since as long as the GLOBAL version exists, Verizon users will get theirs. After Moonshine, how can we not believe our DEV can do anything. The only thing that would hurt this phone is if Beaups leaves the DNA community. I've seen where just one strong dev left the community for my phone and the phone support practically all but dried up. He seems to be the king of the DNA. As long as he supports it, we'll be fine.

Beaups doesn't develop ROMs. If he left there would be no difference as far as that goes.
Personally I don't really care if verizon decides to push newer updates we have awesome devs and I'm sure they will do what they can to get us those updates

beaups runs on stock rom.
Somewhat related question. I recently moonshined and now have all the s-off goodness that comes along with it (still on stock ROM minus bloat). Question is, when Verizon starts pushing the next software update, do I need to worry about my phone trying to accept it? Does the customized hboot preclude us moonshiners from getting the update?

Do you have a custom recovery installed. At the least I believe (and its been a while since I go an update on the phone with a custom recovery) that the recovery will not automatically install it. But I think there should be something you can freeze or remove that would prevent the OTA.
The HTC rep I talked to yesterday claimed thatthe DNA is HTCs favorite device. Even more favored than the One. He also claimed that the DNA, for that reason, will be supported with various updates for years to come....carrier permitting.

He was trying to make you feel better by saying so. From VZ track records, we'll be lucky to see Sense 5 by the end of the year if HTC releases it in the next 3 months.
There's no reason it shouldn't get updated. It's still quite new, and hardware is top notch. Now when? Who frigging knows! Verizon hates it's customers.

It does have the hardware and specs. Take Verizon out of the picture and this phone would already be on sense 5 (maybe not 4.2.2 yet). I think once the HTC One drops on Verizon it won't be long before the DNA gets it. Kinda funny Verizon is the last major carrier to get the HTC One and S4. They gotta get their dirty little fingers in there first, just so beaups, adamoutler and crew tell them to suck it.
Honestly, the ONLY thing I like about Verizon is there data speeds. Other wise I'd never of jumped ship from sprint.

I am with Verizon for the Coverage and my unlimited data. If they took that away I think I would go to At&t, they are close in coverage and we have LTE here.

I or my girlfriend have had every major carrier minus Sprint over the last year+ and Verizon was hands down the fastest and most reliable. AT&T's LTE is a joke.

Let's get the facts straight, it was just shy of 2 years from the phone getting introduced that it got ICS (Intro March 2011, ICS Feb 2013). Yes it was after the phone was EOL, but at least they did it.

Yep, that was exactly my point. We might not see a TIMELY update, but I am sure we will see one eventually.
TBH, if one is running the stock ROM, they are so far from stock Android it isn't funny anyways. I actually prefer Sense 4+ to Sense 5, HATE how they took away the animated lockscreen weather.
