Hardware issue - HTC EVO 3D

I have recently taken apart my evo 3d and while prying the plastic off, i hit one of the ribbon connectors and took a small chunk out of this. I know it has to do with the touch part of my screen, as a small portion of it doesnt work properly. Im curious if i can buy a new one and replace it myself, because obviously my warranty is void now cuz i took the screws out.
I highlighted the section that i screwed up in this picture http://imgur.com/qYLw2

There is no way you can replace that ribbon/connector by yourself. You would need a microscope and some very expensive equipment to get it unsoldered and re-soldered.

Damn. Ok thanks

Wow what did you use to open it up? Looks like you pried it open with a screw driver.

For future reference you can get a case opener tool REALLY cheap off eBay.

Even if the cable was replaceable, it's buried under one of the antennas. So sad, what were you trying to do to begin with?

Actually, I hate to go against the grain here but..... That ribbon cable looks extremely easy to replace.
Look at this video and see just how easy it is.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t8u5Wa3Odak
Its not soldered in. Just clips holding it in.
I don't know where you'd find one but it should not be that hard. do some searching. even try ebay for a parts phone.
Good luck.

It is easy to replace but you have to replace the digitizer to. I think he just wanted to replace the ribbon cable.

Back Cover

Aghhh!!! Is anyone else having a hard time putting their back cover on perfectly? I've pressed down so hard on the area (mhl and above) and still won't budge! Any tips?

Same here. why couldnt they have the ones that slide off like the phones before. so much easier to take off.

I asked this same question few days ago also and the best tip I got was to start on the opposite side of the camera and peel it off..I now have replacement batteries to change every day and found out if you do it the way then just peel it open like a book ...you don't have to do it hard...it gets used to openning and comes right off. I really don't mind if the back falls off becuase I always have a case on it...hard it silicone and it hoods it in place. I still do this very carefully. I realize tho many will not like this...but I gotta work with what I have...don't like it....but till replacement backs come on the market...it will do.
Its like the area above the mhl has a gap no matter how hard I press it won't go down.

Never mind. HTC being the kick-ass company they are is sending me a new back cover free of charge!
Mine also has a small gap just beside the headphone jack. It just doesn't line up very well right there.

Red back plate replacement

So I generally don't start threads because I usually don't get stuck. BUUUUT
I ended up either cracking the red back plate when removing it, or when screwing it down, not sure which, and it doesn't sit right. I get wonky signal issues sometimes because the back covers don't sit right on it.
Anyone have any idea where I might be able to order that back plate? I can't imagine it cost very much, but having complete signal failure because your back cover creaked is retarded.
I spent some time on google and could find every replacement part in the damn phone minus that red back cover.
Thanks!

Used one of the youtube vids for dis-assembly. Re-assembly is basically just the same steps in reverse. The most difficult part was lining up the placement of the digitizer on the LCD. If you don't get this right, the screen will not fit properly. I had to somewhat set the pieces together all in place loosely to get the alignment right (lcd sitting in the slot with the digitizer somewhat in place in the front bezel), and then take them apart and secure them together better to ensure a proper fit if that makes sense. My first try - lining thing up by eye - was not quite right. I used some 3M 2mm adhesive I ordered along with the tools. Taking the digitizer off is a bear, it takes quite a bit of patience and a bit of force. Reseating the cables is also a pain, use the plastic pry tool to help reseat, and have LOTs of patience during the whole process. Make sure to give yourself a solid hour or more. I just broke my second screen today with a beer bottle of all things, so I'll have to redo this whole process here shortly. Also make sure the front of the LCD and back of the digitizer are very clean, and the adhesive is lined up properly and not blocking sensors. I didn't do this well, and have a slight bit of adhesive sticking out the bottom side about 1mm into the visible area of the LCD, and the back of the digitizer is noticeably "gunky" in the front camera region, which I think is also causing some issues I'm having with the front proximity sensor. Hopefully I'll do a better job this next time. Good luck!
Oh my Chad.... Lol
Definitely out of my skill.
...any recommendations of what type of phone repair shop I should look into? I went to an iPhone based, but "smartphone" capable repair shop and he definitely didn't know what to do. He said it would cost 70$ and that it would be risky...... Not something I'm about to shell out 70$ for especially when I already have the replacement screen

I've seen a couple places online that you can send your phone to and they'll replace the screen and ship it back to you within a few days. Never tried a site like that tho and could be kinda sketchy but that's an option. Also here in Albuquerque there are tons of Craigslist ads for screen replacement here in town so you could check your city's page and see what you find.
Sent from my Rezound using xda premium
I did this very thing last week successfully with no problems. Follow the repair video by repair universe on YouTube to the letter and you will do just fine. The key is to take your time and make sure the phone is heated enough with the hair dryer or heat gun to ensure that the adhesive comes apart smoothly. Take extra special precaution not to crack the LCD screen when removing the glass (digitizer) from it
If you're not willing to take the chance, you could always send it to me (for free) but I can't guarantee a flawless victory

I see what you did there...
If you decide to repair your screen yourself, there are also four transparent pieces of plastic that you need to put on the new screen.
They are for the capacitive buttons, so they redirect the light from the lights on the motherboard to the buttons.
Unless you don't want lights, of course. (I forgot to put them on mine lol, but I don't mind having no lights)
Also, when you put it back together, make sure to seal it very well on the outside so water doesn't get in and screw up the digitizer. You may have to use glue or something else as a sealant.
Every time it rains, my digitizer gets messed up from water getting in. (crossing my fingers for no permanent damage)

Charging port...

Hello everyone. My charger port is somewhat broken... If I move it around and keep it at one spot it'll charge. I haven't really tried cleaning it or taking it apart yet as I don't have the tools. I've looked around on these forms and saw that there is a white version charger port and a black one? I also saw that the average price is around 18$ for the part.
Is it possible to repair the port with solder or something?
Appreciate the help!

If you're industry certified for soldering, I'd say go for it. I was at one point but I wouldn't attempt it as the contacts are super small. As for the part I don't know, I have a board bookmarked on my pc, and when I get back to it I'll check to see if it'll work for the black one. Have you rang up Sammy to see if it's something warranty will cover?
here's the board I have bookmarked. I haven't purchased from this company nor am I sure this will work, I was going to purchase it for a project that I haven't started.

Hey everyone. I fixed it by just replacing it. I found one for 14$ free shipping. One think I wanted to mention. When I looked at the broken part, the only thing that was wrong was the inside of the jack had destroyed contacts. The other pieces to the part was fine. So moral of the story is, do not use super snug cables like I did. I'm going to try to make new contacts in the broken one but its very small. Ill probably break it but whatever.

Use the stock charger and cable....and if you dont have one, buy one.
They are sized properly for the device, where aftermarket cables are not....g
I had a similar issue with an after market usb cable that fits too snug. I ended up using a dremel to flatten the two tabs and voila, no more having to tug the wire out

Sent from my HTC6435LVW using xda app-developers app
I'd say it's not worth it at any price. It's just going to fall off again. Pretty much everyone I've known with one whether they liked it or hated it it still fell off soon or didn't function well anyway.
I always try to play nice with my phones. I hated that cover from day one but as always played nice (didn't rip or cut it off) but the day it fell off, I picked it up and put it in original box I also kept. My HTC incredible 1 and my HTC thunderbolt both made it till next upgrade with out that cover. Reminds me of those port covers on the older dumb phones that never really had a purpose but to make the port weaken over time, then go bad and phone quit charging. Not worth replacing at any price. But good luck to you if you really feel you need one!

I bought a used Employee Edition DNA and the owner ripped off the USB cover and did not mention it...
That site was the only one I found as well, and at first it was OOS but when it came back that shipping definitely killed it for me. Granted, it is shipping from Korea I believe, but it isn't worth it to buy a black USB cover... if it was Red I might have just sucked it up...
They may fall off "easily", but I have no use for the USB port right now anyway since I'm using a wireless charger... there are always ways to work around the USB cable to transfer files as well. Not sure why so many people look down on people who want to keep their flap intact...

I agree that it does get in the way... so much in fact that I did not want to use a DNA until I got a wireless charger =\
I'm just a bit OCD with my phones and given that the back is red, and then there's a sudden black break along the bottom with the missing USB door... just looks off to me.

I wonder why even replacement DNA Body kits do not include the USB door either...

Only reason I haven't ripped it off is because of old phones the internal end would rattle around. Anyone noticing that or specifically not noticing so I can join the no plug club?

It may depend on how you rip it out. Mine was already removed, but it seems to be cut and the rubber end in the phone is staying put and does not make any noise. I'd take your cover if you do get rid of it though

I would like to know if it really does keep water out as well, it says the phone is water resistant, but could that little plastic piece really hold back anything? FYI mine has been taken off as well so annoying to use i just said screw it and ripped it off one day. Haven't looked back since
For those of you that have replaced this rubber port cover, how easy/difficult was this process?
To replace the cover, you have to take off the entire back. The little port cover isn't held on by anything though, it just sits between the phone and the plastic backing. Unless you're an expert at taking unibody phones apart, it's not worth it because I broke the waterproof seal strip during the process. It was glued on.
Looks like you can get one for $6.80 here w/ free shipping
