[Q] Install AOSP SMS app without root? - Galaxy S III Q&A, (US Carriers)

Hi, I was wondering if it was possible to install the AOSP SMS app without root? The touchwiz SMS app is annoying me and I'm not quite ready to start flashing new roms.

Don't believe so, since you'll need to access /system on the phone, and you need a root browser [with root permissions] to go there/ You can do the simple rooting process [literally takes less than 2 minutes] have root, stock rom with root access, then install the apk.

At the risk of being flamed, which process exactly allows root for under 2 minutes? Through Odin?
Is there a fix yet for the counter?

Don't really worried about the counter, if you rally so paranoid about it, ask how many people been refused for insurance or service from the counter, I rooted all my phones and by law they have to help you with the device, of course don't boot loop your phone by flashing something that doesn't belong to your s3(another carrier or model) I and you should be good, I have rooted over 10 devices (own devices) and had service in 4 and they never said anything, I even Sent my old evo rooted to asurion and I don't get charged for the new one they sent me

it takes away root access (like the phone was before you rooted)...
more specifically, it takes away these files(which it added when you used the root option and flashed the update.zip from recovery):
/system/app/Superuser.apk
/system/xbin/busybox
/system/bin/su
But what if im on a custom rom

then a lot of the functionality from your custom ROM wouldn't work. I've never tried it but I can already tell that bad things will happen.
Why are you thinking about unrooting? Rooting gives nothing but benefits, it'll give disadvantages to users who are new to rooting but you'll become more comfortable with it.
If something is wrong with your phone, just end up using Odin and setting it back to stock. Odin isn't that scary to use either.

Root and unroot apk

Hi. Is it there a root and unroot apk for sgs ii? I.e. like gingerbreak but using psneuter as needed by our phones?
(would like an easy way to root and unroot without a pc so I can use some apps that don't like root, like "good for enterprise" email)
I did google and lots of questions but no answers.
Thank you.

I'm not sure but i don't think that there's an apk. But you could try to flash a custom-root-kernel like this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
I also think it's an very very easy way to root your device. Takes less then 5 minutes for me

Thanks. It's more switching back and forth I'm after. I am already rooted

The only way currently is to flash back to a stock ROM after root. The gingerbreak exploit was patched before release.

What? So you're asking how to use root applications after you lost root, without actually rooting again? Seriously?
Is anyone else troubled by the change of screen colour after a root? lol?
Dude, root it with SuperOneClick, takes 5 min and is easy, so easy even a barely english speaking person such as yourself couldnt screw it up.
dude i had root my phone using superoneclick,so dont give a ****.i am just asking that is there any chance to unblock my apps without rooting it again.

how to work the apps which require root permision without rooting the phone? no chance...
Rooting may have not caused your screen problem, its caused by any application you used after rooting. as far as I know to rectify such problem within the firmware you need root again...
thanks....and any idea how to get my pics back in my galary coz there are pics in memory card but doesnt show in my galary.

Root your phone again. Get mobile Odin pro. Then again flash full stock firmware.
This way you'll keep root with full stock firmware.

just over pc or mac! no other way trust me
Yep. Initial root requires a computer.
If you really need to root right now, download Odin and CF-Root on your phone and ask someone to borrow their computer or use a public computer. Move the files to the computer and root it in less than one minute and you're done!
i have a few questions maybe you guys can help... so here we go:
when you root with odin, it unlocks the phone giving you su right. does this also change your rom?
how is the launcher different than the rom? difference between flashing rom and kernal?
last one... when you install a custom rom, can you delete it if there are bugs to reinstall a different one or use the stock?

I plan to buy s3 but i have a question in mind. I dont like to install custom roms and only need to root the s3 in order to install Titanium Backup Pro.So if i root it and not install custom recovery and no other mod just superuser and titanium backup pro will i be able to get fota update. And also can i easily unroot it and go back to as it was before?
Don't root, BUY the games, get updates.
Cracked games are bad mkay?

Using cf.root you can keep the phone as close to stock as possible and have root, you can still get official updates through KIES but OTA downloaded updates seem to be giving ppl problems.
To slaphead20 and burden010 just cause the guy doesnt want custom roms doesnt mean hes cracking games or doing anything illegal. I only rooted my stock rom so I could fully use titanium backup and mybackup pro, plus custom roms arent that far from stock at the moment anyway so give the guy a break.
edit :- I see OP has edited his post maybe he did announce he was doing something wrong.

Thanks and im very sorry people. Will surely read the rules before posting.
If you have only a rooted stock Rom then you should be fine for receiving ota updates. Worst that might happen is you will loose root.
