you should start from here and you are supposed to already know how to program using the Java language.

what type you trying to build??
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium

search xda portal it has something like this., how to make an android app a serices of 5 .......that should help you

Making a launcher is not something you should be attempting for your first app Even if you do already know quite a bit of Java, a launcher is pretty complex. Start with more basic stuff and work your way up. Anyway, there are already dozens of launchers; are you sure your idea is better than all of them? Or at least unique enough from all of them to be worth the effort it will take? (Not trying to discourage you, just want to make sure you don't waste your time)

I know nothing of the Java language. And how long would it take me to learn this "language".

I really like htc sense. You dont know how much I like it. But all of these sense launchers/themes just dont cut it. I was trying to make a Sense 4 launcher that actually looks 90% similar to htc's work with out getting in trouble with htc. That will take a LONNNNG time.

Considering you just said you don't know ANY Java, I highly doubt you will reach that point within the next year, at the very least. After that, consider how no one else has been able to create what you want, despite there being many people who DO know what they're doing trying to do so.
In all honestly, you are FAR better to find some decent theme for an existing launcher and work on improving that theme to the point you want it.

Why build your own App from scratch?
Why are you wanting to build an App from scratch? Apple have made it a complex process with loads of hoops to jump through.
Have you considered buying a clone app or someone elses ready made app and the playing around with its appearance? It'll save a lot of headache. It's one of the reasons why I setup TwistMob which enables new Devs to buy or sell existing Apps.

[Q] Steps to becoming a Rom Developer

I have no experience, but i'd like to learn how to make my own custom rom.
Does anyone know what i'd need for a Thunderbolt GB rom?
I've looked into it and read about Kitchens and how you need them, but don't fully understand.
I'd like to know if the community could help me out here.
I could google it and I have, but I don't get any results that are specifically for the Thunderbolt.
Please go easy on me. :/
I can't answer your question so I apologize for taking a spot in your thread but I don't see any reason people would be rude/harsh towards you especially considering you posted in the proper section! Good luck and hope to see a ROM from you someday!

the phone model does not matter really and you wont find anything specific for the thunderbolt.
Install Linux right off the bat... Dealing with Windows and using environments are a PIA.
Download apktool, kitchen, gimp, and your base ROM whether it be the GB leak or MR2. Read up on how the system works, various editing techniques, and suck up all the info possible. It really is a learning process, not really something someone can tell you how to do.
That's what I did/do to learn.

You do realize too that some people, no matter how hard they may try, are just not cut out to this type of stuff?
I'm not saying you can't do this, but just be aware that the end result may not be what you want it to be.

Ya, I remember back in my days in school when these people were in computer classes with me saying how cool it was to learn to program.
Half of them, while very bright, lacked a certain "ability" to grasp programming, shall we say.

Paid to root

Hey all...I'm VERY new to all of this rooting stuff...still reading about it and I can't seem to wrap my head around it....Not sure if I'd be crossing a line by asking this, but here it goes....are there people on here that would actually root a phone for someone if they (ie..me) are to stupid to do so?
Of course there would be compensation involved.
Thanks for any info!!!
If you are new to the point that you are not comfortable following the steps needed to root your phone then I would say that you should not be worrying about rooting your phone at this point.
Why do I say this? It is because you will want to flash a myriad of Roms after your phone is rooted, which I guarantee will cause issues that you will not be able to figure out on your own.
You also need to ask yourself what it is that you hope to gain from rooting your phone. The stock Thunderbolt has bloat no doubt, but it is generally compatible with apps and is about to receive the Gingerbread OTA (non-root users theorize) fairly soon.
What do you want that can only be accomplished by rooting your phone at this point? If you cannot answer that question, then I hope you will take my advice and do some reading on this site, and one or two other sites, until you are ready to root your phone without paying someone to do it for you.
One other thing. Please do not create posts asking about the proverbial 'Best Rom'. There is no such thing.
Just my .02 cents!
I appreciate the info....Thanks!!!

You're very welcome. I hope that I did not scare you off of rooting, but it is something that should not be done without some careful thought before hand.
For $100 I'll root your phone.

I've rooted several devices for friends that have no intention of using clockworkmod. They simply want the advantages of root and to run a new ROM like CM7. I'd be happy to do it for money, and I don't think the end user of a rooted devices needs to know jack about it rooting it to enjoy the benefits. In short, I'm happy to root a device for someone as long as I know they aren't going to get in there and brick the thing somehow and come to me to fix it like it's my problem. Most people are decent enough to do that.
if you look online(or in your local yellow pages), you can find shops locally that will fix, root, etc your cell phone.
just here in San Diego there's about a dozen places that offer these services.
although i will tell you... the first time you figure out you have a problem with your carb and it's bad enough that you can't drive your car... then a "friend" tells you, just bring the carb over here & we'll fix it for you... then you're just standing there looking at the carb and thinking "uhhh..."
now that's rooting a phone x 10 difficultly.
I'll do it for free, teach you how i did it, and give you the basic knowledge of how not to brick. Where are you located?

I didn't have anybody to guide me when i first started and i know how frustrating it can be. And you never know, he may be the next great developer with the right start. I have been the "tech support" for my entire family who I converted to android. It would be nice to teach someone who will want to learn as opposed to my family who just says here you do it...
And you are right on the money when you say ppl who use Th3orys roms are nice and helpful. I have learned a great deal from that community.
I am not a dev, just someone who knows how to implement the awesome features created by the community here at XDA.

Dang if I was near my laptop which my dad has webx on I would do it for you. I have rooted a bunch of phones for friends and family and I find it especially fun teaching them what root, roms, etc. can help them achieve. Today I rooted my friends sensation so he would have the sensation xe (beats audio) options and speed. If you feel that your stock phone seems slow rooting, overclocking and debloating or changing the ROM can definitely help you!

I would do it for 30 and make sure your phone gets back to you with lots of extra programs you will need. Plus 5 bucks shipping back.

[Q] Android Hacking - Where do I start?

Title really says it all. Everyone has to start somewhere.
I'm interested in digging in and seeing what I can do. I'm not really a programmer, but I can learn. I'm pretty comfortable with linux, having used it for many years (not really much in the last few years, though). I've used and installed Mandrake/Mandriva, Sabayon, and Gentoo; and I'm going to install Mint, Ubuntu, Sabayon, or Arch over VirtualBox sometime in the next few days.
Are there any sites/forums/articles that I can read that would give me a beginners look at Android hacking/development? Are there any other things I should know?
Sent from my BNTV250 using Tapatalk
I would start with doing themes. Then from there, make your way into apps, then rom development.
If your interested, I can give you a link that gives some great ADW turning instructions.
That would be great. I've done some theming back when I had my Droid, mostly just changing things around to suit my desires. Never done any app development, though.
I'm wanting to contribute to the Nook Tablet community, if I can.
Sent from my BNTV250 using Tapatalk
Here is that link, it is long, but will make you understand really good.
http://code.google.com/p/adw-launcher-android/wiki/ADWThemeGuide
As for the nook development, idk about that sorry, may want to ask in that section.
I really appreciate it.
In terms of Nook dev, I figure if I can figure out Android hacking as a whole, I can apply that to the NT.
Alright man, good luck!

Also depends on what you actually want to developer. ROMs? Android apps? Games? Something else? They all require slightly different routes. But a good understanding of programming in general will be a very good help in anything you do

I'm your age too I do developing primarily on computers though and I have been doing that for a couple of years now. I can say that the best place to start is to learn a programming language. Most Android apps are coded using Java so, if you have some experience with coding learning Java would help you alot. But if you have little to no experience coding I would suggest you start off with something like C maybe even python but syntax is very different compared to Java so C is recommended. After you have enough experience with that I'm sure you can jump into building ROMs.
Good Luck!

my problem is I don't have a unique and practical idea. I'd wish I could come up with something that would be lucrative & beneficial but those ideas are limited and I wouldn't want to do something someone else has already done.
If I wanted to learn I'd get the latest Android Studio & follow some "Hello World"- type walkthroughs. I'd think YouTube vids would be helpful.
Then try to latch on to an open source project since I'd have an existing project to see how it's done.

I've always found Head First Series to be good. Try Head First C or if your feeling confident try Head First Android Development. But adding on to what jawz101 said the best way to learn a programming language really well is to do your own project, also, check out "professional" open source projects to learn the style and even some tricks of the trade.

Now what?

I've rooted and installed HD RLS14, but I am now left pondering what next?
Its funny because at its core, the S4 is a phone, and I find myself wondering how else I can modify the S4? HyperDrive is a fantastic rom and I have had zero issues since I've installed it.
I now feel this need to do more to the phone, but there is nothing I can do to improve it. Sure, I can modify the aesthetics of the rom, but I can only do that so many times. The point I am getting to is that we do not know what we want as humans, and once we have what we truly need, we realize it is not enough or I should say we think it is not enough. Despite the fact that we have no idea of how to fulfill that "need" that really isn't there.
Sorry for blabbing. I'm just bored.
