I'm not familiar with MIUI but it's possible to create profiles with Tasker. It's capable of pretty much anything (activate data when a specific app opens, for example). Think I remember seeing someone do some stuff with MMS too. It can definitely be done.

Your phone IS only pulling data when needed. You and your phone just disagree on what constitutes a "need".
Are you on ICS or GB? Figure out what app is pulling the data. ICS data usage will show you, and let you disable the usage by app. GB will let you turn off background data in a blanket setting. On GB you can get an app like My Data Manager to see what app is using the data.
Juice Defender has settings too to disable data when your screen is off and such. But it's commonly believed to actually decrease battery life, especially the task killing aspect of it.
Sent from my Galaxy S II

Im on GB, ICS pissed me off to no end at the moment. Guess ill look into tasker.
Android devices are the only ones I've noticed to be unable to just idle properly on their own, but right now im in magical land of Japan where using Nokia is too problematic.

Hmm, good enough unless tasker will eat more battery than active data connection

BEST WAY TO SAVE YOUR ANDROID BATTERY! legit!

okay so what you wanna do is go to settings, then go to accounts & sync then uncheck background data! It wont affect anything but the market so when you wanna download stuff you just have to turn it back on then off. This will increase your battery 100 percent no lie! It made my phone amazing.
Also good if you do not want to receive any emails or notifications of any sort...

I just have a 3G switch in my notification bar so I can turn it off/on quickly when I want, and doing so saves my battery countless hours of life. I turned my phone on 7 hours ago and I've only had 3G turned on once for some quick browsing and resyncing my contacts with Facebook, and I'm still at 90% battery (and I've done a fair amount of messaging today and made two phone calls)
How do you put that in your Notification bar? I'd really like to be able to do this that easily.

There is an app in the market called widgetsoid that can do it. Or you can flash a CM rom. They all can do it natively. There's other ways but these are just a couple that can get you started.

Well, I often change my Google cal on the web on a desktop PC (or in iCal on my Mac) - much easier - and I wouldn't get gmail with background data turned off. So, it does affect more than the market, actually.

Using MacROM and smartass governer, turning off BT/WiFi and GPS, I was able to get 2.5 days of battery out of mine on a recent weekend camping trip. Unless I'm on the phone or REALLY texting a lot, I can make it from 7am to midnight and still be on >25%. The ROM can make a HUGE difference!
Kind of the same as turning the phone off... the battery will last a week with it off.
Isn't that amazing? It could probably even last twice as long with it turned off. Good luck getting any notifications, though. Of course, there are some days that it would be nice to have it turned off.

I live in the boonies and work in the boonies. Turning my 3G off also seems to increase my useable signal for texting and calls. Also saves the battery big time. There is no drawback for me. Besides texting I dont have to have instant notifications from FB or my email.
How wrong the op was lol

My Atix is using a TON of data...

I noticed that was surpassing my data limit this month. I installed 3G watch dog to see if I could find the culprit. Obviously the browser is the main draw, and considering that I've already been spoiled with Flash I have been using it a lot. What I've noticed is that my second highest draw is a list of services, that used 20MB in a day. 3G watchdog groups these all together so I don't know which specific services is using so much data.
Anyone else seen this issue. Any way of seeing the data draw of each specific service?

20mb seems like a lot of data usage without your interaction. Did you install any apps not from the market? ie: sideload from a not so reputable site. Gingerblur the thing and start fresh. Then you can install the apps you want and leave out the ones you don't want.

[Q] Wi-Fi networks screen pop-up

Anyone know how to get rid of the "Select a Wi-Fi network if you would prefer to run the app over Wi-Fi" screen?
I have to press "Do not use Wi-Fi every time and it's pretty annoying.
The only way I know how to get rid of it right now is to completely disable Wi-Fi.

Then disable wifi. Not sure why you'd have it going in the background eating power if you're not actually using it for something.

Thanks. But I was asking if there was a way to get rid of that dialog.
I know I could disable Wi-Fi, I even mentioned it in my first post.
But driving to the local Subway by my work place for my lunch break, I don't want to have to disable it and re-enable it for an hour.
If there is no way to do it, then a "No, there isn't a way" would've sufficed.

I'm going to assume you're either on uberBAMF or a Gingeritis ROM. I believe Chingy and TeamBAMF have attempted to address that issue, but to what success I'm not sure. Might check out themikmik.com threads for an answer or tool to fix it. That's the best I can tell ya. I never use public wifi because it's always slower than LTE.

Thanks, I'll check it out.
I tend to use Wi-Fi at my work place to help from burning my battery too quick.
I'm not even on the phone while at work anyway, so sitting idly there with wifi on is a bit better than sitting idly with 4G.
Although I will be installing in a juice defender type app to do some battery testings later.
Hopefully it will help.

I'm not a big fan of task and feature killers. I consistently see a projection of over 40 hours standby on LTE with mine using none of that stuff. Additionally, they tend to hurt performance. I'd be more prone to just dropping a wifi widget someplace. Just my thoughts...

Yeah, I'm just doing some testings to see if it helps any.
Logically, I would think it does help, since while my screen is off, the data is disabled.
But who knows, there might be something within the app itself that's draining the battery life even more.
Thanks for your feedbacks!

Just from experience, some chat clients are simply abusive when it comes to data use. Yahoo was one of them for me. I also try to very rigidly control when certain things sync or update. Seldom used email accounts update once, maybe twice, a day. Weather only every 6 hours instead of EVERY time the widget is viewed which is the default setting. A lot of the sync setting are WAY more frequent than I think they need to be... the information just doesn't change that much. And it's largely stuff you'll never notice it not doing. Also, I underclock my bottem end CPU speeds and undervolt them to the limit. My phone spends the VAST majority of it's time at or below 245MHz, sipping .8volts or less.
I use IM+ Pro and FriendCaster for Facebook.
I do not let FriendCaster ever do any syncing, however, since I don't even check that thing too much and when I do, I can manually sync it myself.
Other than those two, I use Gmail which is on autosync and Moxier Mail for my corporate email which is on direct push mode.
Since we're on the subject, would you know if direct push burns battery unnecessarily also?
I'm not certain how push works, but do not want to put it on auto polling every 3 hours or something.

Real push email service shouldn't need polling at all. The entire idea behind push email service, as basically invented by RIM, is that a remote server serves as a proxy user to your account and allows you remote access through that service. As a result, nothing is sent to your device until the remote service has something to send. I'm not familiar with your email app or setup through the corporate account, but if it's actually real push email, it's the best possible setup to preserve battery life. Real push email service is one of the few sports BlackBerry can still say they own the game. Everything else is just pretending REAL hard, but the harder it pretends, the harder it tends to be on your battery too.

adjust all your settings first, if you haven't already, such as background data, GPS, location, all that stuff. run it very conservative and see if there is a change.
if you are running all the widgets that update automatically, weather, friend stream, etc etc etc... or even task killers, set CPU, crap that uses up CPU cycles... well you should have this figured out already..

1,100+ posts and you don't know what settings he means? lol ok I'll bite. Make sure
you don't have 'always on mobile data" checked for starters. Don't have GPS, WIFI, 4G,

things syncing whenever they damn well please. If all else fails, download a program

If i dont have always mobile data ON or Wifi, if I stop using the widgets who need sync, if i stop use a lot of things, if i dont use the live wallpapers as background why not to buy a Nokia phone then?.
I think that the major problem of all the android phones is the battery life. It sucks.
Adjust settings as the post above. Download senseless ROM from scroler and battery issue issue will be a thing of the past. Of course you will have to follow the suggestions to implement it. My biggest improvement in battery life was when I turned off background notifications in accounts sync in settings. For 2.3.3 roms...vipers ROM is the best.

As for why have a smart phone and not use the features?
There is no reason. But there is also no reason to expect good battery life, either. If
you haven't noticed, battery technology hasn't improved to the extent that we all would
love to see. It sucks, but its true. Once they improve, so will battery life.

A few Q's

Hi Guys,
I ordered a Galaxy S3 on-line two days ago and expect to receive it on Wednesday/ Thursday and am preparing to move on fro mmy Razr XT910;
Here are some things I would like to know:
1. Does Market Enabler work ok? I have loads of paid apps, but a lot of time use a SIM from a country with no access to paid apps and ME is essential.
2. Does Carrier Name work? I have a long carrier name and it bothers me in the notification bar, I just set it to 3 dots so I know I have coverage and that is enough for me.
3. What app would you recommend to easily replace Smart Actions for basic stuff like turning off dat during the night - nothing fancy. I tried Setting Profiles, but it does not have a data switch.
4. I use TiB on my Razr and my Razr is running 4.0.4 ICS. Will I encounter restoring my apps and their data? No system data is backed up.
Thanks in advance,
Szadzik

1&2: I have never used these 2 apps but if they are just normal root apps it should be no problem at all, because rooting the sgs3 is a walk in the park
3: There are lots of switches now in the pull down notification bar with the sgs3. You have basically every switch you could imagine up there, so i just turn off mobile data manually when i come home. If you want to have it automated i used Juice defender for a few days and it did its job. But be aware any app that automates stuff like that runs background processes and consumes battery.
4. I did the exact same thing when i got my SGSIII a week ago coming from the DesireHD. No problems at all! As you said dont even try with system apps, but user apps.. no problemo.
If you run into problems with games, install it from the market and redownload additional data if needed and then restore only data from TiB. Sometimes there are different versions for different phones but data is the same.

Titanium works well but I would be a bit careful. I had been taking my app data from rom to Rom and phone to phone. I did the same on my Siii and found I was getting really bad battery life and odd results in better battery stats. Solution? I wiped and reinstalled my apps using titanium but only the app data from a very few apps. Massive difference

Also remember, that if apps do not work well after restoring data, you can wipe their data from within TiB
