[Q] Flashing ROM/Kernel via Creepy's Guide - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

OK I have read creepy's guide and several other ones and downloaded all the files.
So far the steps that I understand:
1. Recovery Wipe
2. Download Mobile Odin on your phone
3. Use Mobile Odin to flash custom kernel by selecting zImage file. (Apparently I need to use a gingerbread Kernel even though I am going to ICS? this I also don't really understand)
4. He says you can use Mobile Odin to flash a ROM but never explains how. The way I did this before is by loading a .tar file into the PDA section of ODIN on PC and then just clicking start while my phone is in download mode. I looked into Mobile Odin and found no option saying ROM or PDA. My options are Kernel, System, Data, Cache, Param, Modem, or Hidden. So where do I load the .zip/.tar file?
Help would be very appreciated thank you.

You can not use GB kernel on ICS rom. To flash kernel you should put zImage to kernel section on mobile odin and push flash firmware.
To flash rom via mobile odin you should put tar or md5 rom file to system section of mobile odin. Push flash firmware.

if the zImage file is inside of the .tar file does that mean flashing the ROM will automatically flash the kernel as well?
Also creepy specifically states to use a gingerbread kernel, "You must use a Gingerbread kernel when using this method. If you use an ICS kernel while your phone is running Gingerbread, it will not boot!!!"

If tar or md5 file have zImage, mobile odin will leave old kernel.
If you want to flash ICS rom You should put tar or md5 file of rom in system and ICS kernel of this rom in kernel.
f you want to flash GB rom You should put tar or md5 file of rom in system and GB kernel of this rom in kernel.
Creepy states don't mix GB kernel with ICS rom and v.v.
If rom file have inside hidden, modem, zImage, system (factoryfs), cache. You can on mobil odin push "open file or archive .tar, .tar.md5, .exe, and separate file" and choose rom tar or md5 file. Mobile odin will put all file in right plase.

Apparently these are all .zip files? How am I suppose to do this using .zip files?
This is the ROM I am trying to flash:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1650948
The .zip file has only 5 files inside of it when extracted, cache.img, factoryfs.img, hidden.img, modem.bin, and zImage with no specified file extension.
When you said it will "leave the old kernel" do you mean it will leave it in place, or leave it to the new kernel inside of the .tar file?
So should I extract the .zip file use the zImage as my kernel and load the whole .tar file under system?
Or do I need to use a different kernel like fluxxi?
EDIT: I was also curious about this ROM, would it be difficult to install? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1752232

First rom you should open with "open file" and mobile odin will put all him self. And you can flash. Kernel and modem will be changed to rom kernel and modem.
Second rom is not difficult but you should flash with cwm recovery.

Sorry I gave you the wrong link for the first ROM, I have like 20 tabs open trying to figure this out.
this is the one I meant: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746181
and it is a .tar file
Also for the second link, I'm guessing CWM is Clockwork Mod? is this a mobile software or PC based? I googled it and went to their main website and found no download link for anything similar to ODIN. I also searched for cwm recovery in play store and found an app called rom manager, is this it?
Thanks a bunch for your help, I really do appreciate this

It's same. put in "open file".
After installing rom you can change kernel via mobile odin.
After installing you will have a root and it' very easy.
You can change kernel to siyah kernel nomswap http://www.mediafire.com/?81odsaa6o6ib165. Take from zip file zImage and install via mobile odin. After you will have root and cwm recovery.
But it is for I777 based stock rom. For other rom you should install siyah mswap http://www.mediafire.com/?vihwj8l5wv8v263

Ok great I know have all the files selected in mobile odin. I wanna go over this with you one more time before i begin the flash to make sure I made no mistakes.
1. I did not do a factory reset because I am still on gingerbread(rooted) is this ok?
2. I used "open file" as you said and it placed all the proper files in the right location.
3. There are two options that I'm not sure what they do, "wipe data and cache" and "Wipe Dalvik cache" Should I check both of these?
As soon as you tell me I'm fine ill start the flash! thanks again!

I impatiently started the flash I hope i didnt mess anything up

If you from GB check both.

I didnt check both and already started the flash!
It already finished flashing and it seems to be working just fine except my phone feels hotter then normal I hope this isnt a heating issue.

It ensures that there are no "left behinds" from prior ROMs or kernels that could (and often do) conflict with the new firmware you're flashing. Many of the problems that people tend to blame on ROMs or kernels are actually often resolved when they go back and wipe fully before the install. May as well get it out of the way in the first place instead of ending up pulling your hair out (or frustrating the dev enough to do the same) because it wasn't done with a clean slate.

Right now I'm having one problem, wallpaper scrolling is not working after flashing creepy's ICS ROM. Is this because I did not wipe before hand?

[Q] Confused at installing ROM

Okay, I'm currently at 2.3.5 KJ3 firmware, with CF-Root 5.0 kernel.
So... I was thinking of installing either a CheckROM RevolutionaryHD ROM or CyanogenMod ROM. Problem is, I'm still not familiar with this ROM installation process because it's not mentioned there...
So, I wonder if I can use CWM or Odin for this? (If I can do either way, how should I do it? Or is this always depends on the ROM itself?)
Also, final question:
Let's say I found a ROM that is based on XI4, (and as I stated before, mine is currently on KJ3) do I have to flash my firmware to XI4 first?
What do you mean it's not mentioned there? There are several tens of lines explaining the installation process for CM7. Which part is causing you problems?
no, you do not have to flash to XI4 first
follow developers instructions to install custom roms are usually installed through cwm.
stock roms through odin.
CyanogenMod rom are in a special category by itself and and are for people who understand the flashing process thoroughly as you could brick your phone.
stay with one of the custom or stock roms till you understand the flashing process as you can recover from them easily by just flashing a stock rom.

Err oops, I really should've tried harder to find CyanogenMod thread here. You see, I went to the original website, and it's really unclear there. Yes, this is my mistake -_-"

Gotcha, I'll be careful then
Bu the way, if I were to flash new firmware using CMW, which file should I put into sdcard directory, the huge TAR file, or just the kernel? (considering I'm just flashing a stock ROM)

if using cwm, it will be a zip file which you copy into your internal sd card and then go to cwm recovery, install zip, choose zip to install then yes.
if it is a tar file then use odin.

Err.. In the stock ROM thread, it was 7zip and they are in *.exe format, I guess I gotta zip them again, eh?
Okay, so is that the big sized file (200+ MB) or just the kernel?
it is the kernal, modem and firmware in one package.
It sounds like you are tryint to use an odin rom in cwm.
which rom are you trying to flash ?
cwm flashable roms come in a standard zip format, if is 7z then it is not a cwm file but odin file.
I'm thinking of trying CheckROM 3.1.1, but then I'm just afraid that it might not suit me... (and everyone says that everyone has different opinion, so you gotta try everything)
And if it doesn't, I'm not sure how am I gonna return to my previous condition, which is KJ3 & CF-Root 5. Hence the reason why I ask this question.
Btw Cosmic Blue, this is the one I'm talking about, the firmwares (ROM, I suppose?) in this thread
PS: I'm still confused with the terminologies (even though I read about them already several times), so if I made mistake, please tell me so!
those files are flashed through Odin as they are tar files or md5 files.
they are considered stock.
checkRom is a cwm flash rom as it is packaged in standard zip format.
dvdlesher
have patience you are learning but slowly.
to return to your original condition just flash the stock firmware from the thread you have linked to using Odin.

Do I need to do those wipes, like:
- wipe cache and delvik cache
and/or perhaps
- factory reset?
wiping cache and delvik is usually encouraged before flashing.
factory reset is done only if you encounter problems.
So... What would probably happen if I do wipe cache and delvik right now? (Assuming that I'm still in KJ3 + CF-Root 5.0 (haven't flashed checkROM yet))
Would that erase my ROM data, therefore I won't be able to boot until I flashed a ROM?
no, it will just clean any cookies and stray data left in the caches.
It will not remove any saved data or apps.

[Q] Flashing stock zip via cwm from CM9

Hi all, thanks for viewing this thread
- I flashed my friend's Bell SGS2 i9100M to CM9 a while back, but now he wants to go back to stock and needs to make use of his warranty because of the battery charging problem even when it's is not plugged in
- I need to flash his phone back to Bell stock firmware UGKG2, but I do not have the necessary firmware (PDA) .tar file to flash back to stock via Odin. I've checked Intratech's thread but multiupload is down so I cannot download the .tar files
- However, I have the stock ROM in .zip file, the kernel, modem and CSC in .tar file
- Unfortunately, I did not make the nandroid backup before flashing CM9 on his phone
- I currently do not have his phone with me, but he will be coming over in a few hours
So my questions are:
1) Is it okay to just flash the stock ROM .zip file via recovery from CM9? (After the standard procedures of wiping system, data, cache, etc.)
2) Will the CM9 kernel recovery flash the stock ROM .zip file? I think it might give some e: (some sdcard) error, I'm guessing... If so, will flashing a custom Gingerbread kernel then flashing the stock ROM .zip file via CWM work?
3) If 1 & 2 don't work, does this mean I absolutely have to flash back to stock via Odin?
I've also got an usb jig prepared
Thanks in advance

Hey,
like u said, the .zip includes .tar files.
.tar files always must flashed via odin!
Only way to to it via phone is using odin on phone, but I'm not up to date how is the status and if it's really working.
So to be sure:
1) make a full wipe (like u said above with formatting system, cache etc.)
2) Put files in Odin and flash
3) Flash cf-root or kernel to get CWM back (if u want)

flash uckj4 modem with stock rooted 2.3.4

i have been searching for days and i cannot seem to find the modem for kj4 in TAR format. i have tried the websites that convert zip to tar and they do not convert where odin can read it.
What options do i have without flashing a custom kernal with CWM on it?
i have my stock 2.3.4 minus the bloatware running now and i do not want to change that as my battery life has been perfect and bug free.
Correct me if im wrong but all i need is to have the phone rooted and ODIn can flash the modem in for me?
i've tried to get CWM without flashing and apparently it cant be done.
invest in the PRO version of mobile Odin from the Play Store. Mobile Odin will flash files without changing the flash counter, too.
Here's a link to a stock kernel that has cwm. you can flash this with mobile odin, then flash whatever you want from either cwm or mobile odin
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1285823
If you're rooted, just flash the zip file, look for the modem in the modems thread in development
Edit: sorry, somehow the last part of your post didn't register in my head, lol, try the pro version of mobile Odin like mentioned above

this will work for any gingerbread: 2.3.4, 2.3.6. Just download the file (about 6 megs i think), put it on your internal sd card, open mobile odin, choose kernel, select it from your internal card, go down to "flash firmware" in mobile odin and flash it. you will now have cwm recovery, then you can flash your modem from cwm.
I have never flashed a modem from mobile odin do I don't know what type of file it will need to flash kj4.
no. you don't have to do a data wipe.

mobile ODIN Lite question

Running stock rooted ICS 4.0.3
I was running Stock ICS with the latest Siya kernel. However I decided to flash AOKP using CWM but got stuck on the boot screen containing the words Samsung Galaxy S2 and so just used Odin on the computer to flash back to Stock rooted ICS from Creepys thread. I'm trying to reflash the Siya Kernel again but when I select the ZImage file with mobile ODIN lite the flash button is grayed out. I've downloaded and reinstalled both the kernel files and reinstalled mobile ODIN lite and get the same thing.
As a side note, I did a nandroid backup and wipe data factory reset before flashing the AOKP zip file with CWM. Not sure what happened there.
Any help is appreciated!

Why are you making things harder on yourself boy? Just flash the .zip in CWM BAM, you have Siyah Kernel
OK, I used Terminal to put the Siya Kernel back and then restrored the nandroid backup. Everything was back to normal. I then downloaded the Aberration zip file and flashed it with CWM and it wouldn't boot past the Kernel logo. Maybe my SD card is bad or something. Aberration showed a successfull instal then wouldn't boot. It was the latest version with an older kernel so I'm not sure what's going on. I must suck at flashing ROMs. After restoring to the backup that I actually flashed the Siya Kernel on, Mobile ODIN Lite still has the flash button grayed out. It it a one time use thing or something? I'm dying to try a custom ROM but so far have struck out 2X.

Also, don't forget to do a wipe data/factory reset before you flash a new firmware.
Re: Mobile Odin Lite. You should be able to install a kernel even without installing the I777 supplementary file. If Mobile Odin is not seeing the kernel, I'm not sure but maybe it's a spelling issue. At least Linux expects a file to be capitalized exactly, so maybe Mobile Odin does too. It should be zImage, not ZImage (as you have it above.)
Also, if you install the I777 supplementary file, then Mobile Odin becomes a very useful tool. You can get that from (I think) the 3rd or 4th post in the Mobile Odin thread.

ROM for Odin of PH1 update

This is the Odin flashables for the PH1 update retrieved from Kies3. I find it different that the ROM is in four files, and I don't know how to combine them. You will actually need to select all four check boxes in Odin 3.11 or newer, and select the correct files based on their prefixes. Just a reminder: remember to backup everything so you don't lose anything!

Did it upgrade your system, leaving your apps intact, or did it factory reset?

Thank you for this, if I'm wanting to keep my custom recovery and be rooted would I just select the BL, CP, and CSC then flash the stock rooted in TWRP? And can I load all 3 in Odin at once or is there an order I should flash in? I remember when I flashed to OK2 I had to do a specific order and pull the battery in between, wasn't sure if that's still the case. Thanks in advance.
I honestly don't know about the custom recovery using the Odin flash. You could try it, but you'd have to reinstall your SU binaries. These files will not work in TWRP. As for loading the files in Odin, yes, you load all of them at the same time. I would recommend trying the prerooted ROM I posted first.

Thank you, the pre-rooted ROM is in 7zip, doesn't it have to be zipped? Should I just extract and zip?
**edit** Nevermind, I bit the bullet and flashed the Odin file then my custom recovery afterwards. All is working, thank you for the guide and files.
Problem extracting files from the PHI zip
I'm trying to extract the files to a folder, but getting "unknown compression method" error so files won't extract. Is this common? Anyone seen this before? Is there another way to extract the files so I can load them individually into Odin?
Thanks
