Hey guys I just bout my Atrix the other day off contract and I got this text.... AT&T Free Msg: Did you know an eligible data plan is required for your 4G Smartphone? Pls call 611 to select a plan and establish your 4G data connection today and I have the unlimited data plan from forever ago. Am I safe?
Sent from Captivate
I get the message once a week, as well as an email. It happens when you still have the unlimited plan. They can't make you change your plan. I would not worry.

I never got that with my captivate I'm getting it now because this phone has higher data speeds

I've read that they send you those messages and then they change your plan to data if you call them but if you don't they just keep sending you the message without doing actually changing your plan.
But I don't actually have AT&T so I'm just talking from word of mouth(or keyboard if you will...)

So if you call that number by mistake then they change it automatically or do you have to confirm it with them?

they probably want to switch you to the 4g plan, which has an unlimited data option for those grandfathered in.

Is this any better then my current unlimited plan? And are you sure they wouldn't try and swindle me and get rid of my unlimited plan
Sent from my MB860 using Tapatalk
I had iPhone 3GS before and was grandfathered in. Wife was also grandfathered in. All you should have to do is tell them you do not want to lose your unlimited plan, and want to be grandfathered in and you should be set.
If you are unsure, call an AT&T store and ask them without giving your information. Also, make sure you go into a store to have the changes done. When I bought my phone they automatically put me on the 2GB plan and I spent 2 hours trying to get unlimited back, which I got after a manager authorized it.

See that last part is the trouble I don't wanna have to deal with. Can you guys tell me what's the ddifferent between the 4G plan and the regular old unlimited I've had since my 3GS?

with the 4g plan, it allows you to use the phone apn instead of just wap.cingular. using the phone apn, i get speeds of over 7mbps sometimes. using the wap one, i max out at 3.9 where i live. that's the only difference. they activate that apn for you

lol i got on the chat and called and they kept *****ing about LTE =p so i gave up
I have a stock AT&T note running on the 50$ prepaid unlimited plan. I have tried every APN I can find, but to no avail, no mms! I have however found that the Voxer app allows you to send pictures. They send much more quickly than mms and it works if you only have a wifi connection. I'm a noob and I'm sure it shows but I didn't want it to get in the way of contributing to a forum that has given me lots of info. If anyone else has a fix for the mms issue.....I would be grateful.

Sigh, why are people going with at&t prepay plans when it sucks so much. Check out Straighttalk prepay plan instead.
Explain the straight talk to me. Can i keep my number?...what is the difference between the two?

guys, i just got the phone today, i have been using Iphone 4s , i put my 4s sim card in the s3 but there was no internet conection , voice call and wifi are working fine, i got the S3 was for my for second line
Call at&t (611) and tell them to update your iPhone data plan to a LTE plan.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
i am worry if i call them i would lose my iphone unlimitted data plan, i though it will works if you have any smart phone plans
Just tell them you need the plan changed to LTE, but want to keep unlimited. I had an unlimited iPhone plan from a 3GS and have been transitioned to a normal 4g/hspa+ plan for a Titan, to an LTE plan for the GS3 and haven't lost unlimited.
^^^^ +1. This.
You will NOT lose unlimited. Just say "I need to update my data plan to unlimited LTE please".....almost everyone on XDA (or those who still have unlimited) have done this many times. No worries.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
No problem, they will keep you on the unlimited plan -
thanks you guys very much for the help, last questions if iphone 5 come out and i upgrade my line am i still have my unlimitted plan , is this why i dont have internet connection on my S3 cause i need to change it to LTE plan

Unlimited will be yours until either you remove it or when at&t pulls a Verizon and makes you give it up when upgrading ...and yes, chances are your data isn't working because you aren't on LTE.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
if you have a grandfathered 3g plan like i do and want to use a 4g lte phone like the note then all you have to do is change a couple of your APN settings.
(at&t told me i would half to "upgrade" to a 4g plan which would lose my data. i told em to suck a fat one and left. found this a couple hours later and now im getting 4g speed on my 3g plan)
------------------------------------------------------------------
Here’s how to set up AT&T 3G/4G APN settings manually for Android smartphones, this will work on all unlocked international Android smartphones as well.
Name: can be anything
APN: wap.cingular
Proxy: leave blank
Port: leave blank
Username:[email protected]
Password:CINGULAR1
Server: leave blank
MMSC: mmsc.cingular.com
MMS Proxy wireless.cingular.com
MMS Port: 80
MCC:310
MNC:410
APN Type: leave blank
They told you that?
When i went to upgrade from my HTC Aria to the Note i asked them
the same question. Kind of figured i would have to pay more for 4g.
They told me i have the "grandfathered plan" which is unlimited data.
They said unlimited data is the same no matter if it is 3g or 4g.
Data is data. I had the unlimited data plan from Verizon, and they let me keep it when I switched over to AT&T. No one can tell you that you can not have 4G or 4GLTE if you have unlimited data.
You should go to a different store and tell them that another store said they would do it when you purchased the phone but forgot to remind them before you left. (or something else, hopefully more creative haha)
Most likely you were not in a corporate at&t store. All of the corporate reps will advise you to keep your unlimited data plan, and have no problem keeping in your account when you upgrade. However, in some of the authorizeddealer stores, they are either uninformed, or are trying to get you to the 5gb plan because they make more commission on it.

Hahaha, we used the same phrasing. Just thought it was kind of interesting. Dork out.
I went from 3G to 4G to LTE...all unlimited. No problems. They can switch them easily. A new sim was required at the store and a provision was made.

Call 611 & ask them to move ur granfathered unlimited data to note it will take 2 mins and 45 sec for them to do the transfer. & u can still use unlimited data. Its just that after 5GB u will get cap just like how they always been doin it.
Wow dude, sounds like they were trying to screw you over. I had an aria before my note and the reps didn't even question my unlimited data in the change. My wife also changed from her iphone4 to a oneX last week and again it wasn't even brought up....
-no, that's not a note in my pocket, i am deff happy to see you.
They straight-up lied to you.
After 5 GB they cap or throttle?
If throttle, i thought it was after only 2 GB

You got lied to M8! I went from unlimited to unlimited 4G. Took about 30 seconds.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda app-developers app
And your APN is the 3G APN. It is not the 4G APN. You changed nothing.
You might want to go back to the store and ask for the manager and let him know his staff is giving out false information. I he already knows, then you should call AT&T and report the store. My conversion was effortless, didn't even have to say anything, the salesman just did it!
At&t has me buying a mandatory data plan(3gb) when I use about 300mb a month and that is because I purposely shut off wifi so I dont feel like a jackass for paying for something I do not use...
I have no need at all for data,I am always near a wifi spot,is there a way to make it seem like my smartphone is a dumbphone?
I have a bunch of att branded flip-phones laying around,is there a way to take the imei from of these and put it on the Note i717?
I'm sure if it is possible,it is complicated.Just wondering.
Thanks.
Buy a sim card for a dumbphone and put it in your smartphone

I tried to do something similar.
I called At&t and told them that I wanted to use a flip phone and gave them the IMEI and everything,I used it for a few days and after I put it in an Atrix 2 I have. After 3 days I got a text saying they added a data plan for $20 to my account lol.
They can read the IMEI of the phone,if you call customer service, they can even tell you what sim is in what phone at that very moment.

I don't think that will work. I had that argument with at&t about not needing the data add-on for my sister-in-law's phone. She wanted the large screen for SMS and doesn't know the internet exists. I put an old 64k sim in the phone, and within the day the phone was cut off. After a call to at&t, they told me I need a data plan with the phone. They detect the type of phone.
Don't bring up the topic of phone cloning - its illegal and banned on xda, as it should be.
So it is "phone cloning"?
didnt know, thanks for the heads up.
I can understand making data mandatory on a subsidized phone but on one bought off contract,it is unfair.

Believe me, brother, I'm in 100% agreement with you, but it's at&t's tune we dance to.
I think i am just going to sell this Note i717 and get a Nexus 7 for my tablet needs and pick up a tmobile branded galaxy s or something else cheap.
Pick up a Roger's I717R Note if you want to stay with this phone. ATT can't recognize the phone and won't put you on a data plan.
What kind of plan were you trying? Im using at&t prepaid and i havent been cut off

That doesn't make sense. Sprint phones are CDMA not GSM. Sprint network doesn't use a sim card to register. In other words, no sprint phone on at&t network.

A Motorola photon from sprint with a Japanese radio. . .glad it works for you. But its off topic and not helpful for the OP.
I've been using AT&T prepaid plan for a few years now, the GNote is my third phone with prepaid plan ($50/mo: unlimited calling, text, data{only for non-smart phones}) but I'm cool with that. So I don't see why you can't do the same.

To add to this comment. At&t will also know if you are using any smartphone from any network or assume its a smart phone I guess. My wife uses a galaxy s 4g exclusive to t-mobile for about 4 months now. Last week she was hit with the 3 gig addition as well. They dont even know what type of phone it is. All she did was turn on the data to download an sms and bam a day later she got the the email.
