Battery drains overnight. - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

Hey guys, I know most of you have seen enough posts about the battery but I need some help on understanding why my phones battery dies over night when it was at 58% when I put the phone aside. Here's a screenshot

I've checked BBS and it doesn't show anything obvious. No wake locks and no processes draining battery. I did some research and read that the Google apps and services are hard on battery. I'm running the latest stock firmware with AJ_Newkirk's kernel. Is there anything I could do to have 1% idle drain like most other people? I might change my kernel to see if this a kernel problem.

Hm, that's very odd. Could you please post a Screenshot of your BBS? That would be helpful. Normally I'd say it's probably BLN or suspend_backoff, but since you're saying that there aren't any wakelocks, your battery is either really old, or very very poorly calibrated....

Poorly calibrated? I havent checked on that yet.
I also forgot to get a screenshot of BBS. Ill get a screenshot after another charge cycle. But i read somewhere that this devices fuel gauge doesnt need calibration.

In honest terms I have done over a week of research on this. I found out that a load of galaxy s2 users are having horrific battery life (20-30% increase) on ics. And there might be a bug causing it. Personally I wanted to test this out... so I returned to gingerbread, and then ics. By far it was a long shot that gingerbread was better than ics. Don't know whats causing it, and I've asked aj to do a little battery working on his rom. But no avail...

There is no need to calibrate your battery on the i777 as it does nothing.
On to OP's question:
The battery percentage can be deceiving at times. I've noticed that after flashing numerous roms/kernels, my battery % would increase/decrease. This is insane as it should always decrease a bit after flashing. My remedy was to use a kernel that could wipe the fuel gauge (fluxxi or siyah). You can do this by using their respective apps (as you're on the official "leak" customized by AJ, get extweaks once you're on Siyah). After doing that, let the phone naturally die off. Then do a full charge cycle. This helped a lot in having a more accurate reading of my battery % as well as longer battery life (at least from my observation).
Also, are you using the official battery for the i777? If so, how long have you had the device? I've heard that some had to buy a new OEM battery.

Yes I have the original battery. I've realized that a lot of the roms I've used have some kind of battery life problem. Roms like MIUI are rough on battery on my phone. But the best battery life I've ever had was on a CM9 Nightly. Too bad the CM9 camera wasn't too good or I would've stuck with it I think I'll try switching to AOKP and give that another try, even though I've flashed that rom a countless number of tines already.

Most of the Devs recommend 3 cycles of depletion/charge before you even worry about battery life. Plus have you checked to see if you have a roque app chewing up battery?

Yes ive checked that too. I usually dont install many apps to begin with. Ill let the battery deplete 3 times and report back. I would also like to say thanks to everyone for their input.

If you have something specific in mind then by all means share it with me.
Unfortunately, you saying "i get bad battery life" is of no help - especially when I am getting VERY good battery life, and so is everyone else who comments about battery life.
To the OP: You might want to reinstall and use the fresh install option. I have never seen Semi use battery in a bad way unless a rogue app was in play.
EDIT: I just noticed that you have checked for wakelocks. In the absence of any wakelocks, you may have a hardware issue. How much screen on time did you have in those 13 hours?

I think I had about 1 hour and 30 minutes or close to 2 hours. If this was a hardware problem how should I handle that? I got the phone in February, I'm not sure if I have warranty now since it has been a few months since I got the phone.

I have siyah kernal and if you boot cwm hit kernal specific items then set the battery to performance that may help. I've NEVER seen a drain as bad as yours. Are you on Wi-Fi? If so a bad wifi network that sends out a lot of un-needed traffic may hurt you.
Kernal specific options -> set battery to 'optomized'
If anything, and sorry if you said this, but go back to bone stock no apps, do it before bed is when I do things like this, let it set if you still see that drain jigg it and return it. Honestly if it is a hardware problem I wouldn't try to mess with it and break it then be sol. Maybe it is the battery go to any att shop and they should flip you a new one for free if you get a cool dude or lady like I usually do. Sorry if my posts waste your time just trying to help

Any help is welcome, and thanks for your time. I think I'll try to wait another few days to see how the battery life is. As of now my battery dropped from 55% to 30% in a little more than an hour. I also didn't wake the device at this time. I hope it's not a hardware problem, I've noticed poor battery life for as long as I've had the phone but it wasn't as bad as it is now. Does anyone know about how the warranty works? I always thought the warranty lasted for 30 days or 3 months or something.

[Q] PROBLEM SGS2 eats battery incredibly fast

Hello!
My sgs2 battery lasts for 5-6 hours
Im not using it that much. I play games for 30mins and thats all. I don't use it all time.
I was thinking that battery is broken so i bought another but 2000mah and it didnt help too but lasts one more hour . Im really worried.
I have mA usage widget and it sometimes shows 600mA 300mA screen off 200mA.
I've frozen all unnecesary apps.
I have kernel siyah 2.6.7
Can someone help me?
Check for wakelocks.

Brilliant. Carry on enjoying your 5-6 hour battery life then.
very funny
It will help also have you checked what is consuming battery? Do you have data, wifi or bluetooth on?
Sent from my sgs2 running cm9 using xda app
Yes I checked everything. I have wifi bt 3g off, screen 40% in battery usage it says screen eats 70% battery and the rest is some apps 2-3%
You were given a way to possibly increase battery life from Oinky, and you dismissed what he said with "Thanks but I don't think it will help" ?
You're obviously an idiot then. And frankly, you don't deserve help at all after that.
Do you realise BetterBatteryStats is probably the best way to nail down wakelocks that can chew thru battery, once you've taken a look at the really obvious stuff ?
Clearly not.
"Some apps".
Very helpful. These apps don't have a name then? Too lazy to type them? You think we should guess?
You don't seem to want any help. You definitely don't deserve any.
Best keep your charger handy.
1. Are u using a task killer..if so don't
2. Are u rommed? It could be that theres one on x10 that ate my battery n am on a 2.6k mAh.
3. Ur kernel.. if its oc cud be a problem.
Turn mobile data, backgroud data, auto-sync and of couse your brightness, can save battery, if all this fails i suggest seeing your phone provider about it
Xperia x10i
DonutHD
DoomKernel v6
Unlocked and unbranded.. Bye bye vodafone
I would give you some help on it but I don't think you will think that would help.

Hope you're battery's down to 5-6 seconds soon.
Check out a poster here who goes by the sadly inappropriate name of TheMegaStar - you two are made for each other.
Original poster seems a funny guy, don't think he wants our help.
Check for wakelocks, change your modem, try a different kernel if rooted, try a new rom if rooted, don't use any task killers.

I did a NANDROID ICS backup and restore to GB. Since i gone to Official ICS i got max 2h30mins for battery with RootDim and Juice Defender. I have around 3h30mins with GB and all the same app installed.
Another reason to switch back is some apps are not working in ICS. Really disappointed For ICS. I was dying waiting for the official but.......

What apps? I have yet to see an app that doesn't work in ICS.
And 2:30 vs 3:30 screen on, or total time? Sounds like your usage is different than everyone else considering most other people get 4-5 hours screen-on time. And screen-on time isn't the only way to measure battery life unless you have zero standby time and a known quantity of what's running in the background.
Sooo..

This is dude's thread that you are crapping in. His comparison of 2:30 vs. 3:30 hours means more than you simply stating everyone else gets 4 to 5 hours.
That being said, I don't see a huge battery difference between ICS and GB.

I have seen a few apps that don't work in ICS. Some that are important to me. But the same thing happened in gingerbread. You have to wait till devs get all the apps updated. It is difficult since there are so many different devices that needs to be developed for differently.
And everyone's useage is different. Not sure what OP meant by 2:30-3:30 whether screen on or total but 4-5 hours screen on is not what everyone else is getting. It depends what you do with your phone. Maybe you sit and stare at your home page with a picture of you on it all day. But I use my phone. Much going on besides screen on. I hate to even call it a phone.

Back to GB for me - I flashed just about everything (my two favorite ICS ROMS were Flappjaxxx's UCLF6 (FJ MOD - not AOSP) and Hotwire's CM9 - each of these was smooth and ran w/good battery life BUT.. I am back on Saurom V7 w/RC7.1. No ICS ROM that I've seen has the kind of functionality that I want - for example using the notification toggles to put the screen to sleep - such a simple thing and only found in Saurom. Or Wake on Volume (although a few ICS ROM's have this) - these are the things that really make my phone useful, not to mention a fully functional SPen memo app.
However, I am using Saurom with the UCLF6 Modem, OC'ing to 1.782 (min 192) w/SetCPU, ADW EX Launcher and it's smooth, about 3 hrs screen on time (lot's of texts, phone calls and Emails) and total of about 12-14 hours before I get to ~ 20%.
I'm happy!
This might be a dumb question but I will ask anyway. I also would like to go back to GB. I do not like rooting a all. So is there a way to go back to the official GB from the official ICS with out rooting?

Ridiculous battery drain on my Galaxy S III

My phone battery life has gotten worse on my week old Samsung device.
I first looked up that there was a problem with a decimal point somewhere in a file. I followed necessary steps online to root my device and flash whatever it was (sorry don't know the jargon, I'm an Apple geek but very new to Android) to sort out my battery problem with cell standby mode showing at 75% in the battery settings menu.
I did notice a difference after doing this for ONE day.
My phone has drained horrendously today after 4 hours after a full charge, I was down to 30% battery life.
Wifi is off, Power saving mode is off (after reading online that it actually drains more power), GPS is off, Bluetooth is off, Sync is off and Driving Mode is off.
Everytime I use my device, I always use Task Manager and "Remove All" then I clear my RAM (which always closes 22 apps, even if I've just sent a text!)
This phone is driving me crazy with this issue and I'm about ready to throw it through a window and go back to my iPhone 4S.
I moved to Android because I didn't like the small screen on an iPhone. BAD MOVE!!!!
If anyone can help me out with some resolution, I'd be grateful. I'm new to Android so this is all just confusing me.
Thank you. :good:

The Facebook app for android is a pos, its a known battery killer. there's a new one coming.
Losing that much battery in 4 hours is a bit much though. How much screen on time?
Maps kills battery too, network location service. Leave GPS on, turn off wireless location, if you get what I mean.
GPS is only used when an app is in use, network location is pinging away in the background all the time.
Android isn't bad, its just not a kids os like iOS, it takes a bit of learning to get the most out of it.
Once you start delving into it you'll get hooked.

Android OS 20%
Samsung Syncadapters 9%
Android System 9%
Twitter 8%
eBay 8%
Screen 4%
I don't know the rest cos I just took a screen shot to send it to my friend to ask what the first one was.
I really can't see me and Android getting on to be honest, which is a shame because I love the actual handset but I really don't like the operating system at all.

Launcher?!? Damn, that's unusual.
When an app does that its called a wakelock, it happens sometimes.
You could try something simple like a reboot and that might solve it or you could go to settings > applications manager > all > touchwiz home (something like that) and clear data.
Alternatively you could download a vanilla android launcher like nova or apex from the play store.
your launcher is your home screens and your app drawer.
Search xda for "betterbatterystats" and use that app to see what else is causing these wakelocks.
Repeat the same thing tomorrow and that'll give you precise info on the troublesome apps.

Repeat the same thing tomorrow and that'll give you precise info on the troublesome apps.

dont clear ram! everytime u do that all the apps have to re-open and it only drains battery.
try to let android handle the ram.
and also let the battery drain a few times and charge at once.
battery should last at least 24 hours with 2-3 hours screen time.
also use wifi rether then 3g

Just getting the better battery stats app. Charge to full. Leave unchanged overnight and when you wake up in the morning, see what is causing the drain and fix it.

[Q] Battery Drains, Kernels and Modems

Hey guys. I've read and learned a lot from XDA, but there are some things I can't really understand or test by myself. So, I'm experiencing some trouble right now, and I need your help.
So, I've been testing roms since I bought my GS2. Almost 2 years later, my battery lasts 4 hours. I used to think the problem was the battery, so I bought a brand new one (sammy brand).
Well, it also lasts 4 hours, with CM10.1
So, I tried installing DorimanX kernel. The battery lasts longer now (not much)
I also searched a lot about Modems, and I read somewhere that changing modems would make the battery last longer. But I can't really understand why. Can someone help me? I'm really lost, I can't put everything together and understand this thing.
Please, help me answer some questions.
tl;dr
1- What is the best Modem out there? Can I install it using CM10.1, or is the modem bind to a ROM?
2- Why the battery won't last longer as the Android upgrades? My brother's GS3 (stock JB) saves much more battery than mine GS2.
3- What is the rom that saves most battery out there? As CM improves, the battery drains faster. Should I go back to stock? Does stock ROMs cosume less battery?
Thanks in advance.
(sorry about my poor english)

1. as far as i know using specific modem depends on the region & network. changing modem sometimes solves your problem, sometimes not. you need to try which suites.
2. install cpu spy, better battery stats and gsam battery monitor. check whether your device is going to deep sleep or not. if not see which app/process is consuming too much battery. 1- try callibrating the battery and then monitor it. 2-if that does not fix, enable aeroplane mode, then power off, power on after couple of seconds and disable aeroplane mode. monitor the battery. 3-if that does not fix check the battery stats log and post it in BBS thread so that some expert may analyze the log and provide you with feedback. make sure for each solution you give ample of time to monitor in order to narrow down the problem.
3. you need to try different ROMs one by one and use it for some time to know which suites your better on your need.

1. Modems are location dependant, so try to find the stock modem or one for the carrier you're with.
2. Battery depends on a lot of things. The apps you use, screen time, wake locks, signal strength, size of the battery, os version, how recently you flashed something, how many email accounts are syncing, apps that sync.. The list could go on forever.
3. As stated above, cpu spy to see if your device is deep sleeping and better battery stats to check the wake locks. If you flashed something recently give it at least 3 battery cycles before judging the battery life. You can also try to underclock your device if you are rooted and have a rom-kernel combination that allows it

There is an issue on JB that enables the media scanner nonstop. It has been draining battery like crazy. In some cases it drains 2% per MINUTE.
In my situation, I think that it's not my problem.
I'll check all your tips and give a feedback later.
Thank you very much!

I've got the results of the apps running
App usage -> 72% (50% is Kernel)
Cpu -> 48% 200 MHz and 39% on Deep Sleep
Partial Wakelocks -> NetworkLocationLocator (45min), etc
Kernel Wakelocks -> vbus_present (7h), PowerManagerService (3h), Multipdp (1h25min), etc
So, what are your suggestions? Should I downgrade to stock rom with siyah kernel?
Nowadays, I'm focusing battery. I want it to last a full day with moderate use. Today I didn't use the phone (at all) and it last 12h, with 20% remaining.

DNA to 34%. Barely any use. unplugged at 100% last night

I have no idea what's going on. I'm in San Diego and there back in PA. I'm running out of ideas why the DNA is doing it. I have a modified S3 myself so I got no issues. But I had her download Better Battery Stats and WLD and this is what I got from her.
She does have the new 2.06 update.
Fast Reboot - Unchecked

Sorry to hear about the battery life. I personally have had amazing battery life. My phone was at 14% when I went to sleep and woke up to 7%. Not sure what the issue is. Connectivity is the only thing that stands out. I doubt she had bad reception. Any apps she's downloaded that could be using her connection more than it needs to? Only other thing could be is the battery. Does she leave it plugged in all night?

Well she was getting great battery life before 2.06 I think. And I know my house, the area is quite strong for a connection. I barely got signal in my room and I got better battery life even with RILJ tripping hardcore. Not sure about the apps. But She plugs it in before she goes to bed, and its by her side all night. So it's not left on the charger all night

Hmm. Could have been a bad update? I hate doing a factory reset but it sounds like it might come to that :/ before that when did the issue start? Maybe we can correlate an app download to the start of the issue?

It could be a bad update, but without me actually on the phone myself kinda hard to pin it down. Before the update she only installed a few apps. She already uninstalled 3 of them which she never used. I just looked the apps via Google Play online account and nothing looks suspicious and those are all the same apps she used on the Inc2 before she got the DNA

My guess the update didn't go as planned. Tell her to move all her files to her pc and do s factory reset. Hopefully that corrects the issue. All else fails. She could let the bootloader redo the update and hope that was the case.

Are you turning off data? Perhaps facebook is keeping your phone constantly awake(looks like it) and that kills your battery. First post a picture of the "other" category in better battery stats and get one power guard and post a screenshot of the "statistics" page.

Looks like she has bad reception. Go to settings, about and network to see the signal strength. msm_hsic wakelocks happen when you have a bad signal, ril also causes wakelocks. This is probably the issue(90% sure).
