My phone battery life has gotten worse on my week old Samsung device.
I first looked up that there was a problem with a decimal point somewhere in a file. I followed necessary steps online to root my device and flash whatever it was (sorry don't know the jargon, I'm an Apple geek but very new to Android) to sort out my battery problem with cell standby mode showing at 75% in the battery settings menu.
I did notice a difference after doing this for ONE day.
My phone has drained horrendously today after 4 hours after a full charge, I was down to 30% battery life.
Wifi is off, Power saving mode is off (after reading online that it actually drains more power), GPS is off, Bluetooth is off, Sync is off and Driving Mode is off.
Everytime I use my device, I always use Task Manager and "Remove All" then I clear my RAM (which always closes 22 apps, even if I've just sent a text!)
This phone is driving me crazy with this issue and I'm about ready to throw it through a window and go back to my iPhone 4S.
I moved to Android because I didn't like the small screen on an iPhone. BAD MOVE!!!!
If anyone can help me out with some resolution, I'd be grateful. I'm new to Android so this is all just confusing me.
Thank you. :good:
check apps are not refreshing every 15 minutes or so, eg Facebook. Twitter. Log out of Google Talk, its logged in by default. Turn off location history (Latittude) in Maps. Just basically check the apps you have installed.

I shouldn't have to turn off Facebook and Twitter to be fair. My iPhone never had any problems with them two apps being signed in and being set up for push notifications. I can't believe how bad Android actually is.
Thank you for the warning about Google Talk, I didn't know about that. Now signed out. I don't think I have Google Latitude. I can't find it.

The Facebook app for android is a pos, its a known battery killer. there's a new one coming.
Losing that much battery in 4 hours is a bit much though. How much screen on time?
Maps kills battery too, network location service. Leave GPS on, turn off wireless location, if you get what I mean.
GPS is only used when an app is in use, network location is pinging away in the background all the time.
Android isn't bad, its just not a kids os like iOS, it takes a bit of learning to get the most out of it.
Once you start delving into it you'll get hooked.

Install apps like cpu spy and better battery statts, that gives you a vieuw about cpu deep sleep time and apps keeping the cpu awake with abnormal activity and thus draining the battery

I was at work during those 4 hours so I literally wasn't using my phone at all. The phone screen was locked and in my pocket.
I got it out on my break and couldn't believe just how much my battery had drained.
com.sec.android.app.launcher was showing at 23%
Android OS 20%
Samsung Syncadapters 9%
Android System 9%
Twitter 8%
eBay 8%
Screen 4%
I don't know the rest cos I just took a screen shot to send it to my friend to ask what the first one was.
I really can't see me and Android getting on to be honest, which is a shame because I love the actual handset but I really don't like the operating system at all.

Launcher?!? Damn, that's unusual.
When an app does that its called a wakelock, it happens sometimes.
You could try something simple like a reboot and that might solve it or you could go to settings > applications manager > all > touchwiz home (something like that) and clear data.
Alternatively you could download a vanilla android launcher like nova or apex from the play store.
your launcher is your home screens and your app drawer.
Search xda for "betterbatterystats" and use that app to see what else is causing these wakelocks.
Repeat the same thing tomorrow and that'll give you precise info on the troublesome apps.

dont clear ram! everytime u do that all the apps have to re-open and it only drains battery.
try to let android handle the ram.
and also let the battery drain a few times and charge at once.
battery should last at least 24 hours with 2-3 hours screen time.
also use wifi rether then 3g

These are the biggest battery users.
Also we can't help, if we don't know what you use your phone for. If you are gaming a lot, then of course, it won't last long. Share your Battery Usage screen and also, if you have root, then BetterBatteryStats info page of Partial Wakelocks, Alarms and Processes.
i put my lww every night on charger, i have about 2-3 hours on wifi a day and rest is on 3g+ calls and sms
Yup, agree with Someguy.. use BetterBatteryStats and figure out what's been running. Then get Startup Auditor to stop it from self starting or a Root app remover and disable it..

also it can be that only with the repair the problem is resolved

Yeah, that may be, but the thing with smartphones (not just android) a multitude of things can run in the background without you knowing. If something prevents the CPU from going into sleep mode all the time, your battery life is gonna suffer.
Check that first. Odds are it's something you installed. In which case, sure, a factory reset can fix the problem but it'll come back once you install that app again.. Get the point?

Don't use taskkillers at all.
Task killer kills the apps and if these start automatically again, it uses more power.
It is better to leave the app running than closing it and then it starting itself again. Android kills some apps or places them to cache if RAM is needed. Android doesn't work the same like Windows.
on those screenshots you have running
facebook sync--> put 1 hour sync
google talk --> shutdown
screen timeout--> 15 sec, and reduce brightnes to half
network--> try switch to 2g
battery try to calibrate, when phone shutsdown put on charger, when is full go to cwm and wipe battery stats and again discharge battery do this 2-3 times, if isn't better take your phone to service if you stil have waranty, waranty on battery is 6 months, i hope this help

Is completely normal with smartphones. The batteries do not last very long on smartphones.
ICS uses a lot of phone's CPU which results in more battery usage. You can do nothing but wait until SONY does something about it in next update!
Hey guys, I know most of you have seen enough posts about the battery but I need some help on understanding why my phones battery dies over night when it was at 58% when I put the phone aside. Here's a screenshot

I've checked BBS and it doesn't show anything obvious. No wake locks and no processes draining battery. I did some research and read that the Google apps and services are hard on battery. I'm running the latest stock firmware with AJ_Newkirk's kernel. Is there anything I could do to have 1% idle drain like most other people? I might change my kernel to see if this a kernel problem.

Hm, that's very odd. Could you please post a Screenshot of your BBS? That would be helpful. Normally I'd say it's probably BLN or suspend_backoff, but since you're saying that there aren't any wakelocks, your battery is either really old, or very very poorly calibrated....
Poorly calibrated? I havent checked on that yet.
I also forgot to get a screenshot of BBS. Ill get a screenshot after another charge cycle. But i read somewhere that this devices fuel gauge doesnt need calibration.

There is no need to calibrate your battery on the i777 as it does nothing.
On to OP's question:
The battery percentage can be deceiving at times. I've noticed that after flashing numerous roms/kernels, my battery % would increase/decrease. This is insane as it should always decrease a bit after flashing. My remedy was to use a kernel that could wipe the fuel gauge (fluxxi or siyah). You can do this by using their respective apps (as you're on the official "leak" customized by AJ, get extweaks once you're on Siyah). After doing that, let the phone naturally die off. Then do a full charge cycle. This helped a lot in having a more accurate reading of my battery % as well as longer battery life (at least from my observation).
Also, are you using the official battery for the i777? If so, how long have you had the device? I've heard that some had to buy a new OEM battery.
Yes I have the original battery. I've realized that a lot of the roms I've used have some kind of battery life problem. Roms like MIUI are rough on battery on my phone. But the best battery life I've ever had was on a CM9 Nightly. Too bad the CM9 camera wasn't too good or I would've stuck with it I think I'll try switching to AOKP and give that another try, even though I've flashed that rom a countless number of tines already.

Most of the Devs recommend 3 cycles of depletion/charge before you even worry about battery life. Plus have you checked to see if you have a roque app chewing up battery?

If you have something specific in mind then by all means share it with me.
Unfortunately, you saying "i get bad battery life" is of no help - especially when I am getting VERY good battery life, and so is everyone else who comments about battery life.
To the OP: You might want to reinstall and use the fresh install option. I have never seen Semi use battery in a bad way unless a rogue app was in play.
EDIT: I just noticed that you have checked for wakelocks. In the absence of any wakelocks, you may have a hardware issue. How much screen on time did you have in those 13 hours?

I think I had about 1 hour and 30 minutes or close to 2 hours. If this was a hardware problem how should I handle that? I got the phone in February, I'm not sure if I have warranty now since it has been a few months since I got the phone.
I have siyah kernal and if you boot cwm hit kernal specific items then set the battery to performance that may help. I've NEVER seen a drain as bad as yours. Are you on Wi-Fi? If so a bad wifi network that sends out a lot of un-needed traffic may hurt you.
Kernal specific options -> set battery to 'optomized'
If anything, and sorry if you said this, but go back to bone stock no apps, do it before bed is when I do things like this, let it set if you still see that drain jigg it and return it. Any help is welcome, and thanks for your time. I think I'll try to wait another few days to see how the battery life is. As of now my battery dropped from 55% to 30% in a little more than an hour. I also didn't wake the device at this time. I hope it's not a hardware problem, I've noticed poor battery life for as long as I've had the phone but it wasn't as bad as it is now. Does anyone know about how the warranty works? I always thought the warranty lasted for 30 days or 3 months or something.

I have no idea what's going on. I'm in San Diego and there back in PA. I'm running out of ideas why the DNA is doing it. I have a modified S3 myself so I got no issues. But I had her download Better Battery Stats and WLD and this is what I got from her.
She does have the new 2.06 update.

Sorry to hear about the battery life. I personally have had amazing battery life. My phone was at 14% when I went to sleep and woke up to 7%. Not sure what the issue is. Connectivity is the only thing that stands out. I doubt she had bad reception. Any apps she's downloaded that could be using her connection more than it needs to? Only other thing could be is the battery. Does she leave it plugged in all night?

Well she was getting great battery life before 2.06 I think. And I know my house, the area is quite strong for a connection. I barely got signal in my room and I got better battery life even with RILJ tripping hardcore. Not sure about the apps. But She plugs it in before she goes to bed, and its by her side all night. So it's not left on the charger all night

Hmm. Could have been a bad update? I hate doing a factory reset but it sounds like it might come to that :/ before that when did the issue start? Maybe we can correlate an app download to the start of the issue?

It could be a bad update, but without me actually on the phone myself kinda hard to pin it down. Before the update she only installed a few apps. She already uninstalled 3 of them which she never used. I just looked the apps via Google Play online account and nothing looks suspicious and those are all the same apps she used on the Inc2 before she got the DNA

My guess the update didn't go as planned. Tell her to move all her files to her pc and do s factory reset. Hopefully that corrects the issue. All else fails. She could let the bootloader redo the update and hope that was the case.

Are you turning off data? Perhaps facebook is keeping your phone constantly awake(looks like it) and that kills your battery. First post a picture of the "other" category in better battery stats and get one power guard and post a screenshot of the "statistics" page.
Download gsam and look at what's taking up a big %. Somethings keeping your phone from going into deep sleep.

Yes I had her turn data off. The only time she is on 4G/3G is on the road. Her work place and home is all WiFi use. She is charging the phone so I'll have to get it for tomorrow.

Alright I told her to do that. Gmail is quite odd. I think the damn 2.06 update went bad but i can't be sure
EDIT: Here it is. Well the first one was a joke. My mother is a funny one. I suspected the worse. msm_hsic_host. Any way I can fix it without teaching my mom how to root or do other various mods?
Looks like she has bad reception. Go to settings, about and network to see the signal strength. msm_hsic wakelocks happen when you have a bad signal, ril also causes wakelocks. This is probably the issue(90% sure).

msm_hsic only relating to the S4 pro chipset or all phones? Cause I have very little signal where I sit in my room and I don't get anything msm, just a screw ton of rilj on a Galaxy S3

Just some info you can take a screen shot by pressing the power button and the home button. Press power then quickly press the home key. Just thought that would help ya out with your captures.

there are quite a few, but i've always used battery monitor widget pro. it's got tons of info as well as estimated times.

The calibration feature seems to be based on tried-&-true techniques & would only make it more accurate. It works pretty well without calibrating, so the worst that could happen is that it will work better. I am glad you like the app. I liked it so much that I purchased the ad-free version to support the Dev.

@BigBroham1984 so I did the calibration and the new times it gave were stupid, for some reason all the calibration tests (video, music and internet) took 3% each which made me think the calibration was off lol. Anyways I uninstalled it and reinstalled a fresh copy to get the numbers back to the old one.
So now I have 9.30hrs of Internet on a widget (which is spot on screen time) HOWEVER if I open the app at all it sets it 12 hrs Internet time remaining so now I basically just have the widget which works nicely but if I do click it accidentally I will have to reinstall it Lol. Apart from this annoyance the widget is great.

Was hoping that 7.1.2 was going to fix the battery issues. Alas Android OS remains #1 or #2 battery drain item even after the most recent update. Going back the Marshmallow. Google should study the hippocratic oath - first do no harm.
Just use pure Nexus. I get 4-5hrs SOT on LTE. I use whatsapp, snapchat, facebook, twitter. Just make sure you disable location services, else Google play services will eat up your battery fast
Does anyone else get like 5 hours SoT and good standby time as well even though Android OS is at the top of the list? I feel like sometimes this "issue" is massively over exaggerated...

Nougat calculates battery differently then MM. It's even better at measuring.
I have better battery on N then MM.
This is why I'm excited for android O, to see if they actually do what they're saying about stopping apps from being able to run rampant in the background. My iPhone will not even lose a single percent overnight while I'm sleeping. My 6p drops 10-15%. I'm getting pretty tired of having to manage my phone to be honest. For a smartphone, it isn't very smart.

There is something severely wrong with your setup. I lose 0.1% idle, overnight. 10-15% is way too much and I guarantee it's not the Android OS which is causing it. Something else which may be reported under Android OS in battery settings, but 15% is not normal lol. That's on your end 100%

So using a phone normally makes it my fault? Interesting. As I said, I don't want to manage my phone. I shouldn't have to worry about what rogue apps are draining my battery. It shouldn't be so inconsistent. If anything you're making my point for me, and placing the blame on a user for using the phone as a phone and not installing stuff like greenify and naptime, expecting them to micromanage what the os should be doing in the first place is both hilarious and sad.

Also, wakelock detector and better battery stats can't give me a clue what it is other than "Android os". I've been at this too long, since 2008, and really I'm just at my wits end. I want something I can use and let do its thing. I don't have time to be doing the work the os needs to do itself

I have two apps, as I stated. Maybe you're fine with doing legwork for the os, but after about 9 years of doing so I just don't want to anymore.
You can argue about it all you want, but being a closed minded fanboy and refusing to even think about what I'm saying is going to harm Android if anything. They know it's a problem themselves

Android OS is 15% of my battery consumption. Google Play Services is another 15%. Android System is 12%, screen is 11%. This does not sound right any way you cut it. I have tried greenifying every app that I don't need to be updating in the background, there is little difference. I don't use Facebook and WhatsApp, but I do use Gmail and MailCal quite a bit. Not much SMS either.

The os should be able to handle things like this, all I'm saying. Literally no need to get into a pissing match, I love android, I just think it can get better. Apparently stating possible improvements infuriates people.

I deleted them and wanted to run android without tweaking it. A lot of my reasoning was to see what it was like to just run it as is.
The point is, the average user does not root or tweak their phone. They expect it just to work. I can't count the number of times people at work have gotten me to help with their phones since it was draining in a few hours while not even being used. I'm glad they are trying to attack this issue, for most people, this is the downfall of android.
I have tried every kernel on here, and while I did get better battery life with greenify and other things installed, it seems like after this long it shouldn't even be necessary for the user to be occupied with that stuff. A phone is supposed to be a tool, you shouldn't need to disable settings, freeze apps, and everything else just to have it work how it should in the first place.
Honestly... it all depends on the user. I've read through the comments, and like you, people ask me for help with their phones as well. Majority of the people I'm surrounded by are always on their phones, max brightness, etc, so it's normal for their battery to drain as fast as it is. I'm at 20% battery right now, with 3h 30m SoT and I have 232 apps installed. I don't do battery tweaks, and I use the full package GApps package(Aroma) only not using Google Photos and all the other language keyboard related stuff. I'm a heavy texter and audiophile (V4Arise is installed).
