[Q] No link to the external SDcard (Verizon, anyway) - Galaxy S III Q&A, (US Carriers)

OK, here's one for the gurus: I've got my I535 rooted and CWM recovery in place, but I've noticed that there is no link to the "\mnt\extSDcard" folder in the \ (root) folder. I created one, linked it properly, but it doesn't survive a reboot.
How do you make one permanently? (or am I missing things entirely?)

use some root file explorer
check this
/mnt/extsd/
in my case this is the external sd
hope it helps u as wrll

Yeah, that's my point. It _is_ in the /mnt folder as "extSdCard" for the Samsung Galaxy S3, but there's no symlink in the root folder pointing to it and a lot of my programs get really *****y.
I can easily paste a symlink in there, but it goes away. Sounds like a job for adbd (insecure) when I get home and have my laptop to play with. I've only had this sucker since Thursday afternoon, and I've worked 36 hours Friday, Saturday & today... :silly:
I thought I'd be a smart-a$$ and name it "SD-ext" so ClockWorkMod would find it, but homey don't play that.

bootanimation

Just saw this...nexus prime boot animation. Its in a flashable zip, but I tried & it didn't work so I extracted the bootanimation.zip & placed it in the system/media folder. I got it to work after that. Looks cool. Ill try to provide a dropbox link with the zip if I can...
http://www.droid-life.com/2011/10/08/download-nexus-prime-boot-animation/
Edit: here's the zip I extracted http://db.tt/RiwoxsLN
Installed it earlier as well
You guys are better then me. I downloaded it and it wouldn't flash...of course, so I put it in the folder you said and I still get the eclipse boot. Any ideas?

Check the data\local\
Sometimes bootanimations are put there.
I had a problem with bootanimations and no matter what I did, I still got a different one, but when I SBF to 2.3.4, it worked again. so check data\local and if that doesn't work, maybe a SBF will.

Did you use the zip I posted in the link above? You have to place the zip in system/media. Rename the old bootanimation to bootanimation.zip.bak so you can use later if you choose. also make sure your change the permissions to r-w-r-r
OK good I am new to this I got the zip moved and found where the permissions are but the check mark dont make sense as to what u are saying

Just saw ur edit...thought it was a signature and skipped it lol
I'm having issues copying the zip to system/media.
It says it is read-only.
I clicked on Mount R/W in the Media Folder.
Am I changing the permission on the Media folder?
Keeps telling me the file system is read only.
Can someone offer a bit more instructions? THX

Are ya using root explorer?
Try just mounting /system as r/w and media will be included.
I wouldn't go messing wit permission on system folder manual checking boxes. Only time I did that I had to sbf lol...but I was changing /system permission using checkboxes
Yes, root explorer and I did touch the Mount R/w on System...still says you can't paste here because the file system is read only. I'm on Eclipse 1.1

Did u try reboot and start again?
It SHOULD allow u to mount system r/w
That is if u are rooted. Lol
All u should have to do to be able to do stuff to /system files is touch the gray button on top that says Mount r/w
it should change.to saying " mount r/o" when ur system is editable.
Does it gave DIRECTLY to the left of that gray button "r/w" after the total memory used/available?
Oh...I'm awake now.
It works when the button displays Mount R/O.
I read it as that meant it was currently set to Read/Only.
Not that was to toggle it to R/O.
THANKS MAN

Transfer Nandroid back up to a new phone question

I just upgraded a new ATT S2. I would like to transfer all the settings (everything) from my existing Att s2 to the new phone. Is it possible?
I know I have to root the new phone first and install CVM kernel.
So I just copy the whole sd card folders and paste to the new phone. Then go to recovery mode and restore.
Anyone try it before?

If the two phones are the same model then all you need to do
is to copy the directories of the backups to same directories
on new phone. Just copy the /sdcard/clockworkmod folder to
your external sdcard or to your computer, then from external
sdcard to internel sdcard in the new phone.
Just be sure to copy the "clockworkmod" folder, don't open
the folder and start copying files or it will get mixed up.
If you copy clockworkmod folder to your computer,
simply copy it back to the NEW phone's SDCARD
(the entire clockcworkmod folder).
Don't copy one or more files at a time. Copy the entire folder.
Good Luck.
Thanks. Works Like a charm. I'll return the existing one and replace it with the iphone4s for my girlfriend

Can I make an app into an apk file to send it?

As most of you may know, the music download apps on the market mainly suck. Well about 5 months ago I found one called cloud mp3 down loader. Its the best one I've ever downloaded but its now not available on the markets. The link is there but the download is invalid. Is there anyway I can send it to my girlfriends non rooted note? I'm running the collectives cp1 and she can rarely find the songs she wants.

If you have it installed, it's already an apk, just go to /data/app find the apk of the app you're looking for, it will most likely have a name like com.(developer).(app name).apk
Just copy that into your sdcard, rename if you desire, upload that to some place (drop box works fantastically for this purpose) then just send her the link.
Super simple.
Two options I know:
1. AppSaver from the market will let you save your app into an .apk that you can send her. I usually do this with bluetooth.
2. ESfile Explorer lets you back up an app and share the backup. My partner does it this way.
Sometimes I have had success googling "download for blobbidydo.apk" and have found the app that way.
I hope this is what you needed.

+1 for dropbox. I use it all the time. You absolutely don't need to be rooted on the other end to do this. Just long press the app in file explorer and share it to your dropbox account.

He said he was running the Collectives Rom...therefore he would be rooted...allowing him access to the data/app folder. Deodex has nothing to do with this. Root is only needed on his end. She can then download and install without root...but before you can correct me...she would need "install from unknown sources" selected.

I know your pain. But I bought a 32gig card and spent an evening copying all the old 8 and 16 gig card to folders on my pc (using an adaptor card and not through the phones and tablets) then merged everything into one folder and put that on the 32. By your screen name I'm seeing you have at least three cards to comb through!
Don't empty the recycle bin on your pc for at least a week after.

[Q] Can no longer write to Android/Obb in JB 4.2?

So after updating to Android JB 4.2 I can no longer write to the ' SdCard/Android/Obb ' directory.
Can anyone confirm if they are having this problem too? Is it due to this stupid and annoying feature that google has now implemented that they wish to check all .apk files before they are able to be installed? I turned this off in settings but it seems that it turns itself back on again after every reboot?
I cannot write to the directory from my PC via USB cable or even through a root app despite the phone telling me that I have -Rw access to the folder and all of it's subfolders etc.
I even tried writing via Linux but it doesn't work either... even if I try and force a write.. plus I cannot access the internal memory when the phone is booted down...
Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks.
Think you need to have root Explorer to write to obb
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
Before upgrading I could write to the directory from either my PC or Root Explorer or Solid Explorer. Now I can't seem to write to it at all. So it's not that unfortunately...
R: [Q] Can no longer write to Android/Obb in JB 4.2?
As far as i can remember u can edit the obb directory even without root....but i'm an android kinda novice.
Try another file browser from the phone (the one from rhythm software is very good).
Might also be that problem with directory permissions that get mixed up to which clockwork mod always refers to (they have an option to fix directory problems).
Android, i have noticed, can get corrupted easily, have you done some serious modding to your cel phone or just root and small patching?

I've been trying a string of different things for a couple of days...
I've tried root explorer pro, when I press copy it finishes instantly but nothing is happening.
R/w is on..
I tried solid explorer pro, it instantly says "the file(s) could not be copied"
Tried "Fix Permissions" from CWM...
Tried copying from Windows. It copies up to 99% then says: "The directory is no longer available, it may have been removed"
The connection is fine, and I can copy to all other folders no matter where. EXCEPT for this folder..
I am 99.9% sure that it's due to this annoying new Android Guard thing in the settings that asks to scan everything. Even if I turn it off, I bet that it still has some sort of affect. It's probably just denying all writes from outside an accepted source..
This really angers me. I don't want my phone to have ANY directories that I cannot write to. Especially seeing as I have to often copy files back and forth from this folder when I make updates to the 2 games I am developing..
There was no problem before updating to 4.2 and this Android Guard thing.
I'm willing to try all suggestions.. Thanks

I'm using Android HD Revolution. It's apparently an 'official leaked' one with just the 'improvements' that Mike etc. do.
Thanks also for your reply. I'm trying to keep my device current so I can stay on top of releasing updates, but I really can't do that if I can't fix this issue. I've put it off for awhile now but it's really stalled the development process /tear

If you mean using ARHD 30.* that is not official, that is the leaked version of 4.2.1, that mike has tweaked
Before flashing ROMs, read changelists carefully please:good:
Ok well then I missed the play on words, it's not 'official' but it's a leaked version. Mike, or whoever updates the thread doesn't usually provide a very verbose changelog.
So I take it that absolutely no one here on XDA has any idea as to why I cannot write to this 'specific' area in my partition?
I have the same problem with Galaxy S4. I rooted the device but this didn't help.
I have tried loading files to obb in Windows 7, ES File Explorer, AntTek Explorer - but no results.
Edit://
I solved my problem using AntTek Explorer (root) and the path is next:
Device root/storage/sdcard0/android/obb - then I had permissions to copy files there.
I hope it help.

Search youtube for-How to move OBB file to Android/obb! Android 4.2 Phone! ..
Hope that helps..
reading changelogs doesn't help the problem..
and @leijonasisu probably it would've been bad flash.. but before i say that you should change rom and check once again.. you gotta see if there was any write protection to the specific folder.. so try using an FTP client, if you still cant get access, then you gotta change the rom and try again

[Q] Help unbinding storage/external_SD from storage/sdcard0

Somewhere along the line either my brother or I made a mistake, and when going to storage/sdcard0 there is a folder external_sd (in italics in most file explorers) which links directly to storage/external_SD. The problem is, while I've cleaned out storage/sdcard0 by moving as many apps as possible with Link2SD, having that directory there makes the phone think sdcard0 is full. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
No one? I'm sure there's some simple busybox command in console mode that will unbind the directory. I only have 250MB on sdcard0 (the internal MMC storage partition) but I can't even update my apps because when I try I get "insufficient storage available" & it's all because the friggin external_sd is linked in that folder. Right now using a diskinfo app, it says sdcard0 is 128% full because the size of the external_sd linked folder. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!! The limited storage available is the main reason I spent the time rooting, to be able to use link2sd to move my apps. I hope someone can help soon.
Don't know of this will work butt I was getting a full sd0 card s while back then I moved all of my backup files to external. All pictures, music, etc as well. Good luck !

Here's the thing, after I rooted the thing, my brother-in-law and I swapped phones for a week (his GS3 for my L9) because I wanted to try out his phone. And he said he tried some tweaks, but said he put everything back before we swapped back. He told me in an email the other day when I told him about this issue that he tried How to exchange memories but said it didn't work for him. So when you ask if I'm running a swap script, could that be what your talking about.
I'll never swap a rooted phone with a friend again! Especially when I can't figure out where he/she screwed it up. But I was thinking about getting a Galaxy S3 or S4, so I wanted to check out his phone. Thanks so much for the reply though.
...oh, and Nathan, all of my files are on the external. And because the external_sd has a folder inside sdcard0, that's why sdcard0 is reading 122% full, even though there's only 200MB of files actually on sdcard0, everything else that the phone reads is from the linked folder.

There ale few ways to swap storage/external_SD, check /system/etc/init.d/ folder for script, depending on android version script will have different name, 97ext2sd was working on ICS, for JB you have to dig the forum. Ussually deleting the script reverts changes, when you find the proper script there should be information how to switch back.
Reward offer...
No init.d folder, I can use an app called "init.d toggle" to make init.d folder (and place system/bin/sysinit file - modify system/etc/install-recovery.sh), but there wasn't a script there creating the directory bind.
At this point I haven't been able to update or install any apps/games in a couple of weeks because I don't want to delete the info I have on external_SD. So, I'm willing to transfer $10 by PayPal to anyone who will help me fix this problem. I'm sure it's something simple, I just need someone with more knowledge of linux and busybox, etc.
Please...is anyone out there willing to help out with a few moments of your time if there's 10 bucks in it?? :fingers-crossed:  :highfive:
I would really appreciate it...Thanks so much and take care all.
Sd0 is your internal sd card. Look you might as well just flash a ROM
