Can someone explain to a newbie, does it do your HD2 any harm having it get so warm sometimes while running.
I've been trying a few roms lately some i like and some that dont have the features i'm looking for, one of the roms i did really like made my HD2 run much hotter than some of the others, i presume this is the processor thats getting hot (its hot below the battery at the bottom of the phone) and i also presume this means that battery consumption would be higher while that happens ?
My real curiosity though is why does that happen with some roms and not others again i presume its setup and programming (i run the same programs etc on all the roms), so does it mean that my HD2 running hot actually is a good thing its good coding thats getting the most out of the HD2 and making it work when it should, or does a rom that performs the same function without the HD2 getting warm have better coding ?
Sorry if its a proper numpty question just trying to understand a few things, i deliberatly haven't mentioned any roms as i'm sure different people have different views on things the Rom in my signature i've settled on and for me does everything i want...
When its working hard, it will get warm and thats normal, when its idle it should be cool,
Its worth checking in your Task Manager to see whats running
ull love it when its winter in a few months

Yeah i gathered that, there has been nothing running that will show up on the task manager, just wondered why on some roms the HD2 runs warmer than others and if its actually better it runs warmer or cooler...
My point being i do the same thing with the different roms i've tried, i keep everything off gps, wifi etc until needed and try to close down everything properly after i've used it, yet some roms definatly run warmer than others doing the same processes, just wondered if its an issue or not really or doesn't it make that much difference...
While idle all the roms i've tried the phone is cold, yet some get warm pretty quickly for example browsing on the internet, while others the phone warms but doesn't get so hot...
Battery management optimisation is criticalfor on all ROMs and some are better than others. If you try a minimal ROM you will see what I mean. G Lewarnes on the Clearex post is quite brilliant. Fast, battery friendly and works well with ANDROID!
Also try any ROM you use with sense turned off.

as for the battery temperature in itself, as long as your HD2 does not suffer from overheating related reset-loop, there nothing to worry about,
you can monitor the temp it with BattClock, on my device it never exceeded 40C
I've bought an HD2 in April this year. After 1 month (maybe because custom ROMs that I've flashed - LEON3 and CLEANEX) it got hot (not warmer) and I could not use it more than 2 min (it was restarting just after loading the OS and Sense).
At repair shop they told me that the motherboard is faulty and needs to be changed.
Now, I've bought another HD2. I'm still using the stock ROM and I can say that it gets warmer (not hot) after intensive use.
Is it possible to damage it by flashing custom ROMs?

I use Batt Clock to monitor my HD2's (we have 2 of them) when its cooking it often freezes. My one just came back from service and all they did was flash the latest rom (which i did the week before myself anyway) and within 10 minutes of leaving the store during config, it went into boot cycle again mad so its going back again.
The HD2 is an awesome device and for me is still better than the Android and WM7 offerings.
Mine would lock up when it got over 30c, and blowing into the headphone jack or putting it into the fridge for 10 mins would help it boot up, but wouldnt stop it from freezing after light/moderate use.
Exactly what the title says... I tried searching but didn't find anything so pardon me if there was already a thread on this here.
I did some google'ing and there wasn't much for specific info, just sounded like guesses. I read in a thread here if it was over 33c (91.4f) then it was getting too hot, and I also recall somebody saying if it was over 107f then it wasn't good.
Any legit info on this subject? I may contact HTC to find out if they have a range they consider normal operating temp for the phone.
I remember when I got my phone I was playing with the demo in the VZW store and it seemed hot to me. I didn't get actual temps from it but I don't think my phone feels any hotter than the demo phone was.
I sometimes run the phone overclocked, sometimes not. Doesn't really seem to make any difference in heat anyways.
Someone told me 45 degrees C, is too hot, which I think is 113 degrees? (C x (9/5) + 32)?
How are you getting the temp? I have been concerned about how hot my phone is getting also. Spare parts that my Battery is at 43.2 Celcius.

Any temperature you're pulling from any app, is not even the actual CPU or other chips in your phone. It's being pulled from the battery. That said I firmly believe your processor is a good bit hotter than the battery having much experience in computer overclocking and cooling for many many years (see 12+ years hands on experience) so with that in mind, I would have to say...
40* celsius is my breaking point. Once I hit that I basically stop whatever I'm doing and turn off the display to let it cool. It's pretty hard to hit this temp, even on UV/OC'ed kernels, but with heavy radio traffic, screen on max brightness and a high cpu load its possible.
Well my phone is hitting 100+ consistantly. The temp reading I'm getting is from the setcpu widget.
I have been backing off the phone when it hits 100+. I'm running gingeritis 3d and the mr2.5 radio right now. I tried mr2 and some other non-3d roms but its still heating up, seems like its even doing it when at idle.
I may go back to froyo, and even unroot and go back to 100% stock to see if that makes any difference. I don't want my phone to blow up on me haha.
Thanks for the response. I may still contact HTC to see if they have a temp range recommendation for "normal" use.

i've had some problems with gingerbread roms too...if the phone is noticeably warm or hot in your hand for no good reason...it's either an app you have installed running wild or you're phone doesn't like the voltage of the kernel you are running....some phones are more sensitive than others.
what kernel you running??? you can try imo's latest kernel...out of the box it's pretty stable

Lol, I'll tell ya how you get that temp. Have a car that has a broken A/C and a windshield mounted car dock. That being said I have a SetCPU profile that fires off a notification sound whever the phone gets over 44C and underclocks the processor. I usually still take it off the dock to let cool down.
Also, I recall that at a certain point (not sure if its ROM specific), my TBolt started flashing the amber light to let me know that it hated me for heat abuse.
After a little smooth talking to a vzw rep, I was sent a rezound in place of my Tbolt.
I love the phone and its speed but I noticed that the battery gets very hot when the screen is on. Coming from a Tbolt I can say that my phone never got over 36 degrees even when tethering for hours. The rezound gets to 38-40 from 1 hour of continuous use (screen on) but no tethering. I have the 3.7 battery. The same thing happens on custom rooms and stock.
Now, I read in tons of places that this phone gets hot but very few provide numbers.
Is this normal or did I get a lemon?
It's normal'ish. Depends on how hot it gets. If you're losing skin or smell something burning it's too hot and you need to exchange it. If it's just warm then you're probably good.
There are a couple threads on this in the forum. Just do a search for battery and will find what you are looking for.
I see threads about really really hot batteries, but mine is generally quite cool. I never use 4G really, but I can tether 3G all day long and it never really gets warm. With screen on for awhile - like playing a game or browsing the net - it does get warm but nowhere near "hot" like my old Eris used to get...
I think the rule of thumb is if it gets above 120°F you need to start taking a look at what is going on.
Well, thanks everyone.
I haven't gotten to 120 yet but im easily at 113-115.
Do you guys think its the battery, meaning should i shell out the $ for a new one since i got the phone practically free from VZW, or could it be some kind of heat sink issue and i need a new phone?
Has anyone had to replace one for heat issues or did you just change the battery and everything was normal?
I exchanged my first one for heat. Probably just could have exchanged the battery in hindsight. Mine was getting in the 140 degree range, so hot, even on the charger i would lose about 3% battery/minute, until it cooled down. My new one is running about 120 with hard use, but I've been running an overclocked kernal, but underclocking to 1.4ghz, and that seems to have helped keep it under 110 now. I'm running the 1.7 kernal on joelz senseless ICS rom, set to 1.4max in the CM9 cpu controller built into the rom.
There are other threads where this has been discussed already, but if you have a defective battery Verizon will replace it. Likewise with a defective phone.

It's an HTC thing, cheap plastic, no property heat dispersion, the batteries get hot, wait till summer
One of the biggest turn offs of HTC phones are the cheap housings they offer...plastic???!?!? Um, no thanks I'll take the heat dispersion aluminum of a Motorola

You may have a bad phone. I just had to swap mine for a new one. My old phone worked great for the first month but then started getting hot and chewing through batteries. I did some tests comparing my phone to my wifes and I would go through the battery 3x faster than hers did. Her phone was always cool to the touch too. I did try her battery as well and that's how I was able to determine it had to be the phone and not the battery.
Hi people, just wanted to ask if anyone had the same experience of your device getting quite warm on the bottom portion where the pins are (seems warmer on the front though). I know that's where the motherboard and all the computing power is at, but it's strange that it can get warm even when all you do is browsing the web using chrome, taking a look at CPU-Z, it shows some things can get as warm as 50-55 degree Celsius, and if I'm not the only one, then is there anything that can be done about it, I mean, it probably shouldn't be like that, right?
That does seem a bit warm for web browsing, I just did a quick test on mine (4K video recording for a few mins) and CPU Z showed temperature just reaching 50C.
Under normal use it seems to range from 45-50, also warm to touch near the bottom. Mine does have a skin and battery mod on so I'd expect higher if anything, but I am using the Turbo Z kernel rather than stock so maybe unfair to compare. 55 is still safe, it seems fairly normal for this phone to reach these temperatures.
Turning off half the pixels when you don't need them may help: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=screen.dimmer.pixelfilter beyond that I'm not sure besides using a custom kernel to help.
Are you using the international variant, clocked at 1.8GHz? If it's hitting 55C web browsing on that I'd be surprised but it seems similar to mine with the Turbo Z kernel clocked at 2.15GHz.
Edit: Just noticed mine hit 60C on some thermal sensors in CPU Z after prolonged use in chrome, dropping quickly to 45C after opening CPU Z. I really wouldn't worry about the temperature, it does seem normal.

Thank you for your reply, I have the international variant (UK), fully stock, I just wasn't sure if going for a custom kernel or a ROM (the one made by janjan seems to be the way to go) would help this or make it worse. It's strange how I would rather go for custom software made by an enthusiast instead of updating to nougat in fear of bugs, but it is what it is, huh.
Edit: is it just me, or some of these phones cameras are not in the middle of the circle that they are mounted it (dont know how to explain it better), for example my front camera sensor is shifted to the right upper part of the circle, doesn't seem to affect its performance though.
No problem I'm running stock with Turbo Z kernel at the moment to up our phone from its underclock of 1.8GHz (UK here too), set up a few profiles in kernel adiutor and I'm very impressed with performance. Agreed, I'm likely going over to N to try Daydream VR soon but so happy with this using Pixel Launcher, animated Nav Bar and G assistant etc. All very stable and smooth at the moment so it's a tough call.
Not sure about the camera thing, perhaps noticeable on my front one but depending on the angle of light hitting it it's hard to tell. Not seen any issues with it either :good: , maybe just a bit of manufacturing inconsistency.
I was just noticing last night how well mine stayed cool after prolonged use actually. I believe that even if this thing gets hot it has a great cooling sync body and dissipates quickly. JerryRigEverything's screen flame test on moto z lasted 3.5x longer without damage than almost any other phone, not this issue, but perhaps promising on heat durability.

It sure does, mine can get warm but the second I stopped using chrome for example it cooled right down again. Durability of this phone from that video was really impressive.
Hi guys, this is something that keeps me up at night. The recent software update was supposed to make performance of the Moto Z better, and in actual daily usage I find nothing to complain about, but when it comes to benchmarks it's a whole different story, I have the uk version by the way. To be frank, I used to get about 129 000 in antutu, which is pretty low to start with, and now it's down to 126 000, geekbench is lower than you would expect from this phone too, at about 1350 single core and 3810 multicore. So basically I started this thread as a place where we could share our benchmark results and discuss them, because I have a feeling I just got an unlucky unit, because it also gets real hot real fast (up to 60 degrees celcium), and I can't make it last for more that 4 hours of screen on time, and I'm really not a heavy user. I just feel strange about this phone, because I love everything else about it, and it’s good that I do, because resale value on these things is beyond awful, tried to sell it for 500 bucks for months with no success.
Benchmarks mean abso-farking-lutly nothing. If they are keeping you up any night, you have a mental issue. I suggest you see a shrink.

Well, there is no reason to be so toxic my friend, my main concern is that I may be the only one here with such a low score, and since the score got even lower after some time that could mean I may have a defective device, and that would be a real problem to keep me up at night.
I don't think there's a problem with your unit, 4 hours screen on time sounds normal without the battery mod on. That drop in benchmark score isn't very significant unless it continues to drop dramatically. I have the UK model too, and it is underclocked by default to 1.8GHz. You could try the Turbo Z kernel to improve it
Also mine gets really hot fast when using Daydream VR or anything intensive but 60 °C isn't dangerous for the SD820. (You could check battery use in settings incase something is keeping your phone awake.)
Geekbench 4:
Single core 1369
Multi core 3779
Seems benchmarks are pretty similar. I'm on rooted Android N but stock kernel so same as yours.

Thank you for your comforting and friendly reply, in battery settings Android OS, Android system, and phone idle are on top when I'm not using the phone actively, I've had laughable results sometimes, like yesterday I had 30 percent battery left with only about an hour of screen on time, again no gaming involved, but this usually happens when I'm moving around, if I stay at home and nothing happens to the phone it usually won't drain battery like that. I think the reason the phone gets hot easily is obviously because of how thin it is, for example, when I keep it in the pocket it's just as hot as my body tempreture, since it just absorbs heat that easily, but has a hard time getting rid of it.

You're welcome. If you click on the graph you can see the awake time too, lately something has been keeping mine awake and draining the battery too. Not sure what it is yet, but if yours is getting really bad screen on time it could be similar. Likely an app running in the background keeping the phone awake which would heat it up more and drain the battery. There are wake lock detection apps that claim to be able to tell you which is causing this.
As you can see it's awake for long periods of time when the screen is off, and it really shouldn't be. Hope this helps :good:
