I've been running my GS2 at 220 DPI lately and am really loving the "extra space" it affords- especially in the amount of text the Kindle app can display now. The main issue I have noticed however is that installing apps from the market requires jumping through several hoops- namely: changing DPI back to 240, rebooting, restoring market from a backup.
Just though it could be good to start a thread as a hub for DPI issues on this phone and and also to see if there is some obvious solution I have missed.
Running ICScrewd 2.1 and Siyah 2.6.9.
Edit: Experimenting with LCD Density Modder Pro right now (2.99). Looks like it fixed the market....

This modded Market version helps when changing LCD densities.
There is still little hassle involved, but not as much as restoring market from backup.
1. Install this modded market (as in, move it t0 /system/app as vending.apk and rename the old vending.apk to something like vending.apkbak)
2. Reboot
3. Go to settings -> applications and clear data in Market app.
Catch: That clear data step has to be repeated after EVERY reboot.
When i changed my dpi. Touchwiz launcher is all messed up oh well

To get around market error with different DPI all you have to do is keep an app handy for switching back to the default 240, then go into "manage apps", find market and clear data. No need to reboot or restore a backup of the market. I use a LCD Density setting of 185 and have for over a year.. that's the only issue I've seen is the market..that and stock Sammy apps some don't resize to fit the screen.

Touchwiz apps can be adjusted for the changed dpi. I run at 180-190 normally. If you have a dialer you want adjusted for multidpi let me know I'll adjust it and upload to my multidpi thread in the themes forum.
Haven't had too much time but I'm also working on resizing the calculator, calendar and other touchwiz apps for the changed dpi.
There's also a patched market going around that I've used that fixes the "this app is not compatible with this device." cant remember where I found it though.

Custom DPI should not affect battery whatsoever. I have used 185 for freaking ever now.. no increased battery drain. ICS has amazing battery life.

I've been at 200 for a very long time with no issues since getting LCD Modder Pro. It costs a few bucks, but the Market/PlayStore works perfectly after using its Fix Market Compatibility function. Works on GB and ICS.
Get LCD Density Modder Pro. Flawless. I flash nightlies often and this males it a cinch and Market fix works Evert time.

I've used LCD Modder Pro, but i had an issue with the market fix.
First it deleted my google account, second it increase the activity of Android System process to an average of 20%, resulting in a battery drain even when plugged!
I'm using rooted stock rom 2.3.6 and Siyah kernel.

What makes you think the LCD Modder Pro app was the culprit? Did your Android System usage lower when you changed DPI another way? Did you check for any relevant wake locks with Better Battery Stats?
Thanks for your input!

LCD modder pro caused my market to not work and it took a complete reflash to fix. The time it took to do that I couldn't refund it. Now I'm waiting to hear back from the greater to see if I'll get my money back.

Phatalbert1000, thanx for all your help!! I found this what do you think?
WARNING this is a question there are boot loop reports after doing this
1. Open Root Explorer.
2. Go to /system
3. Click on Mount RW (It should appear as Mount RO, that’s when it is correct!)
4. Look for build.prop. Long press on the file and press Open file in Editor
5. Scroll down to ro.sf.lcd_density=240
6. Change the value to anywhere between 180 and 240. The lower the value, the higher density your screen will have.
7. Click on the Menu button, and Save and Exit.
8. Reboot.
Method II – Before flashing a Custom ROM (Including AOSP ROMs for your phone)
1. Open the zip file containing the custom ROM.
2. Navigate to System Folder, then extract build.prop to your Desktop.
3. Edit the file using Notepad or EditPad or Notepad++
4. Click Ctrl + F(Search) and enter ’ro.sf.lcd_density’ or navigate to this line.
5. Change the value to your desired (Higher Value = Bigger font and lower density, Lower Value = Higher Density and smaller font)
6. Save the build.prop file and replace back into the zip file in the same place.
7. Flash the Custom ROM as per directions."
I was looking at it but when in editing build.prop. I find 2 lines of ’ro.sf.lcd_density=240’ you would change both I would think do you know? And why wouldn't Captian Phone Bricker just do that if it's that easy? What is the stock GB set at it was perfect?
I want to change the LCD Density on my Galaxy Mega 6.3 that natively has 240 DPI resolution. Its all a bit small for me and some apps doesn't even scale properly and are ridiculously small and not properly displayed. I come from an old original Galaxy Tab 7 (that also natively has 240 DPI resolution but with with much more readability and larger everything as it has a larger display with a lower resolution LCD)
I am using an app called Resolution Changer (and have tried a few other similar apps that do the same job and work fine) to set the the phone to 260 or 280 DPI.At these resolutions (for me) the Mega is much more usable and all looks bit bigger and better on screen. Even the formatting of some apps that at 240 DPI look awkward and have some elements displaced or ridiculously small, at 260 or 280 DPI look MUCH better.
Everything works perfectly well at these settings except the Samsung Phone/Contacts/Messaging & Camera apps that FC. The Messaging and Camera apps don't matter because I simply use a 3rd party app and the problem gets instantly solved. However the Phone/Contacts app is a real problem because the phone becomes useless as "phone".. and using a 3rd party dialer doesn't fix the problem because these add-on dialers still need the native phone app to actually make/receive a call (basically Android 3rd party dialers are actually just a skin on top of the native phone app).
Is there a known workaround for this? I have no idea how to fix this and think that Samsung locking their apps at a fixed resolution that cant be changed is really stupid. Samsung makes great hardware and horrible software..
Thanks in advance for any feedback or solution on this on how to make it work.

I still haven't done it. The problem is I have no idea where to get these files. I guess my best optionis to download an S3 4.2 ROM and try extract them.. would be a lot easier if someone could share these files already from an S3 ROM. But so far no luck. I have no idea what ROM to choose or if then I can simply extract the apks with WinRAR or another zip utility.. so this is where I am right now..
Hi guys, im a galaxy s2 gt-i9100 user and how do i make my status bar thinner as it is taking up a bit of space?? Do i decompile systemui.apk or seclauncher2.apk? And what line is it to edit? I found this breakdown of the systemui:

Didn't find the specific part for what you need though, sorry.
Would be cool if someone could make an exposed module for this. What I do, is just use the Expanded Desktop mode available on newer roms like CM, AOKP, etc. so it's gone till I swipe it.

If you are running a TW based rom, you have to use the framework and the tw-framework files to help decompile the systemui.
apktool if framework-res.apk
apktool if twframework-res.apk
That idea. Without those, systemui can't decompile correctly. If you are running a non TouchWiz rom then there is another issue. Make sure to use a tool that is known to work with the update you are on as there are lots of different tools to do this and some are better suited than others.

Hmm, sorry, I don't really use Xposed for this purpose, so I think you'd be better off looking for help in the module's support page (link is in the module download page).
However you can do what I do - just lower the DPI of your device, and Android will shrink everything after you reboot - the status bar, even your apps.
Look for 'ro.sf.lcd_density' in your build.prop. Lower it by a few numbers, reboot. Repeat until you get a setup that's just right.
If you get problems with Play Store after this, look for Play Store Fixes in the Xposed download page.

Hello,
I've recently found a way to change your Android phone's DPI (PPI density), it is not an app, but a flashable zip which modifies your build.prop and adds lcd density line. This is the only way to avoid bugs and issues, as applications found on the play store do not work!
If you wish to change the DPI within the flashable zip (default is 401, I suggest leaving it as is), please open the .zip file with either WinRAR, 7zip, or any other program and go to tmp folder and edit misc file to your liking!
Download: http://www59.zippyshare.com/v/HzaadqMk/file.html

You basically want to make the DPI a bigger number.
I don't know what stock is for the Nexus, but it would just be a larger number where the 400 is.
ro.sf.lcd_density=400
Hydrogen uses 400 DPI so I am wonder why they have changed DPI for Oxygen.
Le dpi Changer works like a charm to set the dpi you want.
Hej everybody ☺ Is it possible to set dpi under 350 at all on opt? I'll tried but it won't stick, always return to 350 after reboot.

Why on earth would one want a flashable zip to edit a text file?
Why not simply edit the text file? Just need to know what line to add and where.
The best option for this would be installing xposed framework AppSettings module, and go and set the DPI for individual apps. I have set it to 350 DPI and it looks great on my OnePlus2

I just had the same problem, tried different apps that would change build.prop-file and so on, with no luck.
So I opened build.prop-file myself and learned that the custom dpi I had set was in there, but the line was commented out.
#ro.sf.lcd_density=300
Removed the leading #, saved file and rebooted. All good now!
Sent from my ONE A2003 using XDA-Developers mobile app
On latest Oxygen 3 , dpi changers are not working anymore. But after googling i found out you can change DPI without any app or zip or file editor. Just with a terminal emulator or adb shell:
su
wm density # prints current dpi
wm density (WhatUWant) # sets dpi
exit # cleanly exit root
