Any Advice - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
im new to this so please forgive me if this question has already been posted previously!
Ive been searching for countless hours on the web and different forums to try and find a solution!
My prob is this,
I rooted my fone using Odin and what i thought was a proper CFW but once i downloaded ROM manager off the Google store and tried to install the latest cyanogenmod 9, i constantly keep getting a message coming up saying "E: failed to verify whole package signature"
Firstly, I am confused whether to downgrade back to stock firmware and then try to upgrade from that; or, find a way to upgrade to cynanogenmod 9 straight from what i have installed ATM.
My fone specs are:
Samsung Galaxy S2 GT-I9100P
Android 2.3.4
Baseband: I9100PBVK12
Kernel: 2.6.35.7-I9100BVKH2-CL453351
[email protected] #2
Build number
Gingerbread.BVK13
Can someone please help me out with this in plain english as i am constantly running into a brick wall trying to figure it out!!!
Many Thanks

Where does it say anything about ROM manager?

What did you use to root your phone? Also can you get into cwm recovery by holding down volume up, home and power buttons when u turn your phone on?
I see you have the i9100p, I'm afraid I know nothing about that version but this will help people pinpoint the problem

sorry guys i used Rom Manager to download latest version of CWM

Rom manager on Samsung phone uses a kind of virtual recovery from what I understand.
You have to have flashed a root kernel which I'm guessing you have as you say you used Odin. What did you flash with Odin?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app

Not to sure what i flashed with as it was quite a while ago, i following http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1419102 to try an install CM9 now lol the noob proof edition

OK so I had a read and the i9100p is the same as the i9100 only with nfc see here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1480245
Ok this should work for you.
-Download cm9 resurrection edition from the official thread + the latest nightly and put the nightly on you internal SD.
-Flash cm9 resurrection edition via Odin as per instructions.
- when its booted up, turn your phone off and enter recovery using the combo I mention above.
- flash zip from SD and pick the latest nighty.
Should get you up to speed, good luck

Thanks a bunch mate! Appreciate u helpin!
ive read that its not wise to use titanium backup to restore a backup after installing cm9, is this true?

No problem
If you use titanium for user apps only and not system apps you won't have to much of a problem. But other than that if you do find problems with apps after restore just a wipe of the app data from settings should do the trick.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app

ok thank u!
big problem tho, i was flashing with odin and its froze about 3/4 of thw way through, have i bricked it??

I'm honestly not sure ive never had that happen to me.
Are you sure its just not taking longer than expected? I'm out atm so I can't have a search for you but if I remember right there is a 'have I bricked my phone' sticky on one of the s2 forums you might find some advise there. Sorry I can't help more
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app

Just thought!! is kies running on your PC? This can mess with Odin.

[Q] No service after rooted and installed Cyanogenmod on Galaxy s2

Hi
I really hope there are some people, who can help me
I have rooted my Galaxy s2 and installed cyanogenmod by rom manager, now I have no service on my phone.
I am not that expert in custom rom and rooting, so I hope some people can help me with this issue.
1000 X thanks in advance.
brgds.
The_84 / from Denmark
I think there are a lot of problems with Cyanogen on Galaxy sII. Did you back up your previous rom?
Try a different rom.
Or you can faf around with radio's it sounds like the radio software is not installed or wrong.
Plus go to the Cyanogen Forum for help just google it...
Hi
I am bit scared to use randomly solution from google, hope that someone know exact how to fix this problem on galaxy s2.
I think is something about installation of the radio software as u said.
Cyanogenmod should work proberly with the stable version.
Hope someone know how to, fix it ?
You should flash a new modem in Rom manager.. open rom manager go to codeworkx and flash KI3 or KI4
btw, this is not the right forum to post questions
Hi rg90
Thanks for the answer, I am not fully aware of the terminology, so appologise my stupid questions.
I have the program ROM Manager premium, I can Flash clockworkMod ? Is that what is you mean ?
What he means is. Try flashing the ki3 or ki4 modem. They can be found in Rom Manager under Download rom > Codeworks.
If it doesn't help. Do a full wipe (data, cache, dalvik cache) and flash CM again.
Next time post in Q & A forum.

do you have /efs folder backup? Go to phone information and check is your IMEI still there. If not then you need to restore your efs .
Hi
You right my IMEI number is not there, what is efs and how to do it ?
Hi Volapyk
thanks for the suggestion, I will try that.
Are u facing baseband version unknown problem?
go to setting, about phone and check it out.

same problem
i understand i have to flash it but do I flash it using the cwsm program on my phone? Or do I boot it in cwsm mode or whatever it is? And flash it there I'm sorry guys still abit new to this
by cyanogenmod does he mean ICS 4.0.4 ( I downloaded the Ressurection 1.9.1 Rom off of galaxys2root.com it works well, especially awesome with SPB Shell 3D) Now i had service after everything was all said and done but no internet so I used wifi for abit but no more wifi, so i tried restarting and then i lost all the service i had.
I had the same issue after flashing cm. Make sure that you have the correct apn settings for your network. I'd not add them and reboot.

what are my apn settings supposed to be? i have bell.ca or bell.internet.ca
If i go to mobile networks i can only find Rogers CAN Mobile network and because of my sim card i cant use it.. darn lol
I'm not going to be much help there I'm afraid as mine were Vodafone UK which I found on their forum.
Otherwise if you backed up first, restore your back up, and there is an app in the market which backs up your apn settings and you can restore them once you've flashed CM.

Ready to rock / root?

I have spent the fortnight since getting my s2 reading everything I can about roms, rooting etc and I cant say that there wasnt / isnt some confusion, but this is where I am as of now.
I want to start trying some other roms like CM7 or MIUI
To root I have kies installed for the drivers.
I have odin and also super one click
I have downloaded the stock kernel for my phone which is XWKI4 from the xda site. I have the very bottom one which is around 8mb. My phone is from CFW but I didnt download the 200mb plus CFW one ( not sure if I need to? ).
I am going to download any insecure kernel and use with odin and then use superone click. I am then going to put the stock secure kernel back on.
Then I planned to download clockwork rom manager from the app store and start to download and flash firmwares with that.
Am I on the right lines or miles away from where I need to be? Been an iphone user for 3+ years so android in itself is completely new to me.
Any advice or help or confirmation I look good to go would be very much appreciated indeed.
Thanks.
Easiest to flash a cf-root to get the phone rooted. Installs CWM also.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
Do not install anything with Rom Manager. If you want to flash things do it with CWM recovery. Go here and get your phone rooted and follow the guide it gives you. Could not be more simple to do it
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
You have odin which is great. Just find the kernel that matches your current firmware and just flash away. This way you get cwm recovery and then you get the cwm manager apk which again is a must app to have. More explanation is better on the thread link i gave above
Many thanks all. Will check it out when I'm back home.

Few problems with phone!

Hey there everyone, I'm a bit of a newbie here and only know a bit about phones (still learning).
Basically my first problem is that I've been trying to install cyanogenmod 7.1 stable on my phone but with no success; I have tried both downloading off the cyanogenmod website for Samsung Galaxy S II and using ROM manager Premium, every time I try it gets to Opening Package... Installing Package and then if I try installing via cwm it gives me a kernal panic upload mode error and if i try and use rom manager it just tries to install it and then just reboots back into 4.0.3 ICS. Please ask if you need any info to solve this and I will try and find out.
Another small problem is recently I formatted my phone in CWM including EMMC by accident and now my "y" and "z" are the wrong way around on keyboard. This isn't a big problem considering I now have a custom keyboard to fix this, its just a small error that I would like to fix.
Any responses would be appreciated!
Catley.

CM7 Q&A http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1176411
As for the keyboard, use the thread for whatever unofficial ROM you're on. Sounds like you have the wrong language/region set and/or wrong CSC. Search for QWERTY and QWERTZ (you don't actually say which is the "correct" way).
Thank you for your help. I have been doing a lot today. I looked at that link and ended up installing cyanogenmod 9 nightly. Then I tried to get cyanogenmod 7.1 stable on but still couldnt. I gave up in the end and looked up pure ICS roms. So that's what I have on here now. Pure ICS special edition. So all is fixed. Thank you again for your help!

[Q] New to this phone

I just bought a used galaxy s2 I love the phone already. I had the samsung infuse before, and I loved the cm7 nightly builds on that phone, but had to upgrade You all know how that is haha.... I used http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1505172 to root and then had to unlock seeing as I am on rogers.... First thing I have to say is that every time I boot up I see the triangle with the ! in it so I might have done the wrong one? It said before i had the i9000m btw. And I installed CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_KG2-v4.1-CWM4 as the kernel
Another thing I might as is that when I tried to open odin 1.85, it would say Odin.ini with a bunch of sqaures, i press ok and it closes.... So i just used 1.83.
Last thing is who do I go into cwm recovery, and I want to go on a cyanogen mod 7 or 9.... Should I try cm9? And how would I do that?
THANKS!
Hope everyone here is more helpful than on the infuse sometimes
the yellow triangle is always there when you boot it cause you rooted it.. but gladly, you can remove it with a usb jig (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=udzMQ_dsci4) or without usb jig (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YOXNf_kH-iA)
I highly suggest skipping CM9 and giving Resurrection Remix a try. Also learn to live with the yellow triangle and forget the CF kernels. I use Siyah kernel and there are other alternatives just as good.
I've tried almost every rom and kernal for S2 and I truly believe RR and Siyah is the best performing combo of them all.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
Thanks I will trythat now, but how do I do that? I sent you a message
If you don't have a usb jig to reset the flash counter and remove the triangle on boot up try chainfire's TriangleAway app either found on the play store(paid) or in his thread here on xda(free). Make sure you are running an ICS rom.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
Sorry I meant how do I do the siyah and rr thing but thanks
I received your message. All the info you will need is right here on XDA already. When you rooted your phone you probably installed CWM recovery (press home, volume up and power buttons to boot into it). Assuming you have that you can just follow the steps in the RR thread to install. It already comes with Siyah Kernel so you can simply flash the latest version to keep it updated. I used odin to flash a modem firmware for Canadian networks but that's optional since the stock base band in rr worked fine.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
So that means all I do is flash rr from cwm and clear that bs stuff and I'm good to go?
Sent from my GT-I9100M using xda premium
Its simple as that Just follow the extended steps in the faq of the rr thread and remember to make backups in cwm in case you make mistakes and need to try again.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
if u need to do a factory reset/full wipe in the process of intalling the new rom
all apps and data will be deleted
so its convenient to make backup important things like your apps, sms, or call log
not compusory though
backup apps using Titanium backup, there are free and paid version

Stick with GB. CM9 AOSP AOKP and Samsung ICS roms will give you a headache, poor performance and poor battery life. My two cents.

[HELP]Gingerbread to CM10(or paranoid)attempt, using CWM - gives infinite CWM booting

I have Gingerbread which is (according to my understanding) what is considered 'stock'
I downloaded CM10 and tried to install it using CWM but after a reboot I got infinite CWM booting (reboot back to CWM, reboot back to CWM forever)
Got told that it was because I didn't have stock and I needed to go
[MY CURRENT ROM] ==> [STOCK ROM] ==> [CM10]
but my current rom IS STOCK ROM, cause it is gingerbread...
then I was told that after the [STOCK ROM] stage I had to upgrade to [STOCK ROM] of android 4.x
cause that was the *ONLY* (is it?) way to also upgrade to boot loader which is needed to host the CM10 in my phone,
but I was too afraid to loose root
(thus loosing the option to use CWM, which I had no interest in..)
so I gave up on this path
>>> Could I get stock 4.x for my phone and use Mobile Odin Pro to root it and then install it safely without the fear of loosing root apon installation?
Instead I tried upgrading Gingerbread to paranoid of the same android prefix (2.x), since my gingerbread android rom is 2.3 and paranoid android rom is 2.5 there should not be any more any of the
"bootloaders upgrade only by installing stock roms" nonsense anymore..
so I went here:
http://goo.im/devs/paranoidandroid/roms/i9100g
Since I do have Samsung Galaxy S 2 GT-I9100G
and tried to install paranoid via CWM the same way - it let me back to infinite CWM booting once again....
then I was told that (from some unknown reason) it is because I didn't try to install it over stock rom or some other nonsense...
but GINGERBREAD IS STOCK... --__--'
I am clueless right now...
all I want is to get out of this useless crashy gingerbread into something more modern, what am I doing wrong? why do I always end up in infinite CWM booting?
what the tutorials I'm following are missing that I keep not doing which makes me end up in this situation every rom I try to install?
what is it, that one magical step that I don't do, that solves everything up and stops screwing up my installations attempts?
please.. help.. ty..
Do a clean upgrade through samsungs pc software(i believe it is or was called kies), cm10 is based on android 4.1.2 so you should have this version of stock rom installed since the rom is dependent on kernel which is changed with new versions of android. You cant run jelly bean rom with gingerbread kernel
Stock rom is every rom for your device officially provided by manufactorer not just the one you got your phone with, I think that you might have been mislead

Thank you for the response, but if I do the upgrade using the samsung software for that... won't I loose root?
I am not familiar with Samsung development but there should be root available for all of the android versions but yes you will have to root again probably
I am currently on my phone but if you search xda for sgs2 root tutorials you should find a proper one

my hardware version is SGS2G and not the regular SGS2, will it make a difference?
I found this tut:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CCgncF59mwE
said I need to dl 'insecure kernel' from here:
http://hotfile.com/list/1967350/4304d29
but they are only for i9100, none for i9100G ..
found this on xda:
http://fus.nanzen.se/
also this somewhere else:
http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/ (searching i9100g)
but under the i9100g option there are so many countries, none of them mine... what am I suppose to do with them?
I am sorry but I dont know what to do.

OK, thank you anyways for trying...
can anybody please please tell me if when I upgrade my rooted gingerbread rom via samsung's method to 4.x android rom - WILL I LOOSE CWM on recovery boot?
I must know that...
I must know that if I would have made a mistake by upgrading, I must know that I would still be able to revert everything back to my rooted gingerbread.
