What you are asking for (root via zergRush on ICS) is not possible, as the exploit that zergRush uses to obtain root was patched with one of the 2.3.6 (GB) versions; it is unknown which one, though.
Doesn't work with ICS as per this post (from the Zergrush thread).
You'll need to use another method to root.
Edit - The man whose post I linked to beat me to it ;-)

Thanks a lot ctomgee for the reply. Yes I wanted to root via zergrush. If it is not possible on ICS then what other easy method. I want to retain my stock rom. I only want root access.
Thanks once again.

Try some Custom Kernel like Siyah. Just flash it with Odin. Your Rom will remain unchanged. This is the easiest method!

Follow the directions, dude. Install cwm first. Then, when cwm recovery comes up, install the other zip.
Edit to add: forgot to mention. Do NOT reboot in between the steps. You have to be in CWM recovery to install the su/busybox zip. You won't be able to install it otherwise. (as it appears you discovered)

Root for DDKQ5
Copy the zip to the sdcard
Get into recovery by (Power button + Menu KEY)
Install the ZIP: Root_for_DDKQ5.zip
that's it now you are a super user
@ er.davinder: I get an error saying error in sdcard/root_for_ddkq5, status 7, and then the installation gets aborted.

He said he doesn't want to deodex... OP have you tried the upd_1 zip method?
i read (from a reliable source, that knows what he's doing) that upd_1.zip does work on this firmware version, but has some problems - during high loads the phone crashes.
so i did not try it out.
upd_1.zip works fine with ddkq5
i updated my ace on ddkq5 and it works great ...

This method works for stock ROM. Verified from personal experience. Am on XXKPO though.
In fact this is so much easier than doing through Superoneclick

I tried it myself and it doesn't work for DDQ5.
Hi all,
I ordered a SGP 4.0 and will receive it today. Should I root it as soon as I receive it? Does 'rooting' make any changes to the stock firmware? Does it change anything else compare to a stock SGP beside that it will have 'root' permission?
I am new to the Android environment as I have never owned one before, but I am an embedded software guy by trade (on a totally different discipline and processor family) so I'm not a stranger in the firmware world and Linux environment.
Later, I like to learn programming/hacking the Android for fun and hope that I will be able to contribute something.
Thanks for any comment.

No, all it does is just give you root access.
Not really, unless you want to use Titanium Backup. Mine is rooted (I think, can't remember lol) and I really don't see any other advantages except for overclock apps or other root-only apps.
Overall, it's not necessary. Just flash a ROM (I prefer CM7 or Klin's Klassic ROM) and a kernel (NOTE: Steve's kernel for the US and INTL 4.0 may cause bootloops if you boot into ClockWorkMod Recovery).
Thanks! I appreciate the replies. So, if I want to root, I just grab the latest version of Superoneclick and have at it?
If I were you I would wait a little longer and get some more information about this, beofre rooting. I rooted my Player using Superuser, just the latest one I could find.

I couls give you the link to the rom forum for the SGP's if you want?
It will void your warranty. but i think its still worth it .it raly depends on what you want to do with your android.

Hey, I'm a huge novice at all of this. I've had my player for a few months and I've heard of tons of people that have rooted their device.
What does it allow you to do? Is it how you get more themes?
I'm very unintelligent on this subject so any clarification would be great...
Hi, I am getting a SGS2 today and want to root it straight away. Its on T-Mobile, don't know other details yet.
I have a SG ACE atm and rooted that easily with a downloaded zip file straight to my phone, no pc, no extracting files, just saved zip to sd card, and installed from there, quick, easy, simple.
My problemis I am reading loads of threads with different ways of doing it and all seem to involve kies, odin or extracting files, I am useless with pc's and technical stuff so is there a simple zip file I can download from my phones browser and quickly install it?
Should I upgrade to ics firmware first or leave it as it comes before rooting?

"Is there a simple .zip I can download [...]?" — no. Short answer on how to root: download an insecure kernel, flash it, use ODIN to flash a custom ROM/kernel, and attain root. Or checkout the zergRush exploit thread. Check the stickies for information on how to root. Using a computer is simply something you'll have to learn to do.
"Should I upgrade to ICS before rooting?" — doesn't really matter, so it's really a waste of time. Once you install a custom ROM, whether or not you upgraded to the official Samsung version of ICS is irrelevant.

For XT910 devices there is currently no way to get root. It is only possible for XT912 devices.
To gain root access during JB update you should have protect root with Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper. That works.

Damn! Now I can't restore all my apps and data using Titanium Backup. I did try the method from here:

Actually, there is a way, but only if you aren't on the JB bootloader. When I wrote my comment, I thought, you just have to flash again (also with JB bootloader). In the meantime, I learned that it seems to be prevented to switch to a lower version.
Sorry for any confusion...
