See through lock screen and root access - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all.
New to the SGS3 and have a couple of questions.
First and most importantly, I found a topic that talks about rooting the SGS3 but also says that it has a flash counter that as of yet cannot be reset. This means that if you screw things up and send the device back for repair under waranty, it might be voided. Is there a way to gain root and reset or maintain the flash counter at 0?
Second, I was under the impression that the lock screen was see through. I mean, I saw online that when you touched the lock screen it would open a hole under your finger showing what was on the screen underneath. I don't know if you know what I am talking about, but after searching , I can't find a way to set this up.
Help greatly appreciated. Thanks to all in advance!

Hi there and welcome to the GS3 forum!
the flash counter can be reset using Chainfires Triangle away its simple to use and very effective. And I've never seen or heard about a lock-screen which opens a whole where you touch. This may have been a custom Lock-screen but it's not there with the Stock ROM. If you need any helping with rooting or ROMS let me know

Hi and thanks. Yes, I am going to need help. So what do I have to do to get root and keep flash at zero?

I used Mskips methoed its very easy and safe: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1703488
And you reset the flash counter before you send it off not all the time you flash a new ROM, this can be done by using Chainfires triangle away.

Thanks both. I'll take a look into it. On the Desire, there was a way to backup the initial state of the device to return it in case of malfunction. Is there a way to revert back to stock with the SGS3? I am not "stock" per se, I am running on a locked, branded phone and it has branded software installed, so I kind of need to keep the backup of the phone's initial state.

Where do I look? Under firmware? I can see only a few and none are for Portugal.

Use mskip's toolkit to backup your current firmware and root your gs3.it's easy and there is a step by step guide for everything u want to do

First you need to be log in on the site
Then go to the firmware page.
On this page, choose "smartphone" then "android" then "GT-I9300" then "Europe"
At this point you will have a list of firmware and Portugal TMN is there

Thanks. Got the ROM. Also, phone rooted successfully. Nice!

Also, for those interested, it seems I was mistaking that lock screen / see through issue. It's not on the S3. Not yet, at least. It's on the 4X.

Would be nice for someone to post up a tutorial for this. Im thinking about getting my s2 replaced as battery life is not so great. I think mine is defective. Today i only got 9hrs minimal usage. Im on stock+root+cwm
You will need the jig to reset the counter and you will need a stock ROM to flash back to stock. Is stock ROM available yet? Those are the two things I need at hand before doing any rooting or flashing custom ROMs.
I have the jig ordered but has yet to see a stock ROM posted.

Is is not possible to do it without a jig? Can I not flash the stock kernel and get rid of the yellow triangle?

i just ordered mine on ebay. i guess there will be a time im gonna have to use it anyways (unbricking etc)
Just tell Best Buy that you have no idea why there is a yellow triangle there.. >_>
There is a small (very small) chance some warranty service types might give you grief about the custom binary count being non-zero.
However if you're just plain returning the device to an AT&T store, the device will be returned and your money back before the device reaches Samsung and they pull the counter (if they even bother to do so.)
So just doing the Return to Stock from my thread should do the trick in almost all cases.
Now in my case... If I ever have problems I'm using a jig, my custom binary count is over 40 now.
i actually just want to return my s2 for an exchange to a new s2. i think i got a bad s2, battery just not good on mine.

You may have to enter 3e recovery and wipe after you return to stock, but other than that:
Just odin the kernel + non-rooted system.
And yes, if you never touched the modem, no need to flash it. If you're returning to stock to return, I would:
Flash kernel + nonrooted system
Enter recovery and wipe (same method for entering CWM from poweroff, but with stock kernels you wind up in 3e)
Check to make sure your baseband is UCKH7 in Settings->About Phone. If it isn't, flash the modem.

BTW I don't think removing the Yellow Exclamation point resets the counter. If they know how to look for that, they can still see that you flashed the phone. The Jig removes the exclamation mark AND resets the counter to 0. So, all you have to do at that point is flash the stock rom, insert jig, and phone was as if you didn't tamper with it at all.
At least that's I hope the jig can do, cause why did I spend $8!!!???

Yes, this has been reported in the i9100 forums with regard to the International version of the SGS II. Developers in this forum say otherwise. I havn't seen any posts proving this one way or the other. I havn't even seen any screen shots of the counter being anything other than "no".
Pretty much everyone agrees that the jig resets both. But it is also reported that bootloaders installed with the leaked versions of the stock rom do not allow the warning to be cleared or the counter to be reset with the jig.
I'd like to see some proof on these issues, or at least reports of first hand experience that gives us some verification on these issues.

ICS Root without flashing kernel or having recovery?

My friend has an S2 he wants me to root, and I'm having trouble.
I've tried the one click method from windows computers though they don't seem to work as he is on ICS.
The ICS alternative says reboot to recovery etc, though obviously he doesn't have recovery so I can't do that either.
Of course I'm going to be told to root it via flashing, though while following the guide, the phone soft-bricked and wouldn't turn on (yellow triangle) though luckily I found the Orange UK Restore Package and now it's back to stock!
When I tried to flash it said use the most similar kernel you can find, and so I did, and it didn't work!
The kernel he has is I9100PBVLP6 and there was not an insecure kernel of that available.
Can anyone help?

Your friend has the UK Orange NFC phone. Use LP7 Insecure kernel.
http://download.chainfire.eu/158/CF-Root/SGS2/CF-Root-SGS2_XW_XEN_LP7-v5.4-CWM5.zip?retrieve_file=1
You will have the yellow triangle after flashing and your binary flash counter would have increased by 1.
You can use triangle away to remove the symbol and reset the flash counter to zero.
Or have a look at the Root/Unroot guide in my signature.

If your friend now doesn't want you to go to near his phone, let him root it himself or live with it the way it is.
Statements like "he obviously doesn't have recovery" when he obviously does lead me to believe you'll only damage his phone anyway.

Why does he obviously have recovery? His phone is exactly how he got it. Unless they give you recovery now? I used to have a Spica (piece of crap) which I had to root in order to get recovery onto it. And he has no idea how to root and his phone is being slow and crashes a lot, so he wants to make it better, I told him a custom ROM would help.

Head over to here: http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/?page=3&t=1&o=1&m=GT-I9100&r=1#regiona, & find the specific firmware for your friends device & flash in PDA via Odin! (no need to find a seperate kernel to flash, as it will be included in the official firmware package!)
At this point you'll have no yellow triangle on your boot up splash screen, & no flash count!
Then head over to here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1501719 & root the device using the instructions given! (you'll need an external sd-card in your device to put the files on for rooting!)
Still no yellow triangle on boot splash screen, & also no extra flash count!
Finally, install Triangle Away from here "IF NEEDED": https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.triangleaway&hl=en, & "MAKE SURE" it gives the exact same flash count number as is in download mode, then click "Reset Counter".
Job done, official stock firmware with root (fast, stable & reliable!) with no yellow triangle or flash count visible!
What Samsung official firmware site? Even if such a thing existed why would the custom binary counter go up? Think about it. Also, OP already made it clear he's incapable of following those root instructions, as he apparently (and obviously) doesn't have recovery.

You's da man, whoop whoop!
he said the phone wouldn't boot & yellow triangle!
yellow triangle as far as I know= binary counter gone up!
Apart from using a jig, for which he'd also have to flash an older bootloader coz the phone's on ICS & it wouldn't work otherwise, what would you suggest to reset it?
Not false information I'm giving m8, just trying to be helpfull, & I can't see in what I originally posted how I wasn't trying to be helpfull really!? But you obviously can

Please could you point me in the right direction??

Hiya guys
Ok I seem to have some issues with the new S3 I have, I originally posted here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1749178&goto=newpost
But I have now found that after installing Samsung KIES the phone is not detected when it is plugged in, USB debuggin mode ticked or unticked makes no difference
I asked in the previous thread how to see if it had been rooted, as the phone is unlocked (originally T-Mobile UK) and my Tesco sim works, but then I tried installing the TRIANGLE AWAY app, and it says
"SUPERUSER IS NEEDED but could not acquire, Are you rooted??"
But when I boot into download mode, it says ODIN at the top, counts is 1 and then there is CUSTOM
So I dont know what the hell the previous person has done lol so i thought it might be easier to put it back to stock, and start all over again!
Please could someone point me in the right direction for doing all this, Im new to Android, iPhone user ever since day one, and I LOVE this phone, but I need to know where I am at with it, and it would be better to start from scratch im sure, so if someone could spare a few mins, it would be VERY Appreciated
Thanks guys
To flash back to stock go here:
http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/?page=3&t=1&o=1&m=GT-I9300&r=-1#modelsa
Select the relevant firmware and flash via Odin. (If you've never used Odin a quick search on here will put you in the right direction).
If your wanting to reset your counter your going to need to root and use triangle away. Best to do this before flashing stock firmware

you would need to flash the original firmware back onto your phone to get it back to stock you can download the same from below link and flash it with odin.

This is the problem lol, I cant use it, the phones defo been flashed with something, due to the download screen on reboot saying ODIN and the count as 1,but Triangle wont run as it doesnt now look like its rooted, well not entirely lol
See what I mean?
Dunno where I am at!
Maybe if I tried rooting it properly, then using the guide to unroot it and put it back to standard, then start again?
Or if I root it properly, do you think that might sort it out?
Why the hell did you create a second topic?
Your seller obviously rooted it, unlocked it and half-heartedly flashed stock back.
So you're gonna have to root it again, following the descriptions in the 'General' section of the forum. (I recommend CF-Root since it's the most painless and straightforward solution)
Then you use the TriangleAway app.
Afterwards you flash back to Stock.

Bricked phone

First of all, I'm sorry if these things are already discussed somewhere. I never owned a Samsung phone, so this is my first time here. A friend of mine bricked her SGS3 and I have to help her to get it back working. She tried to install an update and the phone is now stuck on Samsung logo, but she can access the download mode.
Since I'm not an Samsung user, can you, please, give me some easy to follow instructions how to repair the phone? Is there an repair option in Kies/Odin or we have to flash the ROM manually? The phone is not rooted, and everything was stock.
And another question, before proceeding, is it possible to save some data from the phone or no?
Thank you a lot!

Thanks a lot Yes, everything is stock on it. We will try and see. There is a high possibility that the phone is hardware damaged because she used to have problems with it and the repair center told her that there are signs of water and corrosion inside. Is there a possibility to permanently brick the device if something went wrong during repair? For exampe, if the USB connector fails or something?

There is always a possibility if the installation is interrupted anyway. But in almost all cases, things go fine so don't worry about it. Plus, flashing takes a couple of minutes.
Thanks! I managed to repair the phone with Kies recovery and now it's running Android 4.3 and all data is still there. The phone is pretty slow but it's full of apps and data so I adviced her to do a factory reset.

[Q] is there a root counter

Just wondering is it safe to root or is there a root counter that will be triggered (just worried about warrantying phone if something happens to it)? If there is, can it be reset?

It's safe. Rooted mine after i got it activated yesterday. Just go to the Development thread and follow the directions there.

Software status says modified after rooting.
software status and a counter are not the same thing. Software status detects root while you are rooted. Counter detects that you have rooted after you return the device to stock/unrooted.

So, is there a root counter?
Excellent question. I think that this question is still up for grabs to be answered. Although, if there is not a counter, it is more difficult to disprove a negative. I think someone smarter than I will have to take a look at this.
My understanding is that your modified status gets reset when you flash back to stock.

Yes, that's correct.
Don't know if this answers your question or not but....

I can confirm that going from root to unrooted and then back to root that there is no counter. When you enter download mode to restore a phone back to stock unrooted it does say that it is modified before restore but after restore it returns to normal status with no counter ever appearing to say that it was ever rooted.

Exactly why I dumped Samsung and came to LG.
They are root neutral.
Samsung is completely hostile.

Totally with you there. Also these bootloaders aren't made by the NSA so maybe we'll have a shot at unlocking them lol
Either way I'm completely happy with this phone it's sick

While the UI is not completely stock, it doesn't blow chunks like TouchWiz. I would be happy with just root on this phone. Bootloader would be nicer, but not having it is not a bad as on a Samsung device.

I just got my wife a LG G2 and there is at least the Loki exploit.
There is a chance, and not the bootloader isn't signed with SHA256 as far as I know.
Insane? It does keep people out. On the other hand it can drive away business.
I bought two LG phones in the last two months.
LG => +2
Samsung => -1
