what will cwm backup for me? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a question about what will the cwm backup?
if I backup a system with locked bootloader, will the bootloader relock after I restore the system from an unlocked bootloader system?
which content will cwm backup?(include kernel?)

"Before we tell you how awesome Nandroid backup is, lets look at what it means. Nandroid backup is a complete backup of your phone. When we say complete, it means everything on your phone – your apps, data, your current ROM and even the kernel. It is like creating a full system image of your phone that can be restored later, when required."
Taken from How to Perform a Nandroid Backup and Restore it to your Android Device
As for the bootloader:
"There is currently no method of returning to an entirely locked state. You can use fastboot to lock the bootloader, but it will always read Re-Locked, rather than locked. Don't say you weren't warned."
Taken from XDA Wiki
This page refers to HTC One X, but it may be device specific... what's your Android phone model?
EDIT: On Sony mobiles you can't also revert the process...
"Also note that there is no turning back once you have unlocked the boot loader. You will not be able to revert the phone to a locked or original state if you unlock it. In addition, if you brick the phone, it is your own responsibility."
Taken from Unlocking the boot loader

in simple it backs up every single file in your device.....if im not wrong you cant have cwm on locked bootloaders......

Nandroid is a perfect backup tool !! esp. for those who crave to try new ROMs. I'm on Defy and every week, I try a new build of ICS ROM from various people. All I need to do is to backup my MIUI 2.4.20 ROM and flash the new ROM. If the new ROM has problems, it hardly takes 10 min to get my phone to its previous state !!
Hit Thanks if it helps !

MODs
Will CWM backup and restore MODs like Viper4android, Crossbreeder, Pure performances, ...?

Nandroid backups only a part of the phone's data, here is how you get the rest

No way, that is a big misunderstanding! A Nandroid backup (at least one made with CWM 6.0.4.7) only contains parts of the system folder, parts of the data folder and the cache folder of your phone's root. It does NOT backup /sdcard/0 (which actually is /data/media ), that is the part which you are allowed to see without root permissions and here is all the data like photos, media, text files and so on which you created or copied there.
I had to experience this issue with the current boot loop of my phone. :crying:
This "complete backup" statement can be found in many locations of the web. Looks like a lot of people are copying statements without knowing or proofing.
THIS is the way to get the correct data with all the photos and media and so on - at least when recovery is still working:
Enter recovery mode. Connect Phone to PC. ADB should be already installed. Create an empty folder and change directory to there within command shell. Type in
adb pull /sdcard/0
and voilá, there you are. Ok, it takes some time, but then you will have a copy of all the missed data.

[Q] If i do a nandroid backup before unlocking ?

If i do a nandroid backup before unlocking and flashing a new rom, and then use the back up, will it restore my device and lock BL ? will it at least hide the "unlocked" text ?
You can't use CWM without unlocking first, so nope.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA
So no way to "Re-Lock" ?
Unlocking/Rooting
Ok, so, you can root without unlocking. Rooting allows you to have superuser rights meaning you can change the system. However, without unlocking your bootloader, you cannot boot up a different ROM (a different OS).
I guess if you root, you could then go do a Titanium Backup after installing the app from the Play Store, that could then backup to an SD card (I would then remove it just in case unlocking wipes your SD too!) and you could then unlock and restore your apps and data from Titanium after unlocking. BUT, Titanium is not like nandroid and doesn't backup everything! So backup any essential data twice!
Oh, and relocking is impossible as far as I understand btw, but I understand that you can make it impossible to tell (well other than the burnt out wire which apparently burns when you unlock the device, a permanent change), this can apparently be done via flashing some sbf files and a Fruitcake. But no, when booting a custom ROM, I don't think that you can remove the unlocked text, only when doing a full restore as far as I can understand.
Hope this helps.
Feel free to ask any other questions you have before going for it and I will try to help, but I am sure someone else can be more helpful than me .

[Q] HELP! Phone bricked after helroz unlock s app

I was just preparing for leaving on holiday so I said I should unlock my phone. Rooted my phone, installed galaxy s2 unlock tool- didn;t get a code
then tried galaxy s unlock app from helroz and after step 2, restart and my phone had a no signal sign, tried to put it on plane mode and it is stuck now like that.
Opened galaxy sII repair tool but it doesn't work... What do I do wrong? Should I wipe the phone, install the galaxy sII repair tool? I have two folders now with efs files...one is from unlock app and one from the repair one. Please tell me what to do. I am desperate
You could jsut reflash original samsung rom, and use the app(I think chainfire made it) that will unlock you'r sg2 for free, or charge I don't remember.
thanks! So any original uk samsung rom and after that install that app?
I am so stupid for trying my luck with this...even in description helroz said clear that it's risky
Save quickly your efs!!!!!!! Is your phone this!!!without this is ipod!!!!no phone or imei code!!!!!!

Oooh my..actually I used that app in the first place...and it didn't work...then second option was this, and like chainfire said...more risky :/ oh my...

where? I saved it several times with those 2 apps...I don't know what are they...the first app told me to save the efs as a backup in the unlock sgs2 folder. Second app as well... God knows what effs I have there...the original or the one with problems...take my words with a grain of salt, I really don't know nothing about this...please..should I copy those files somewhere in my computer?
screenshots here with what efs files on my phone.. so what do I do now?
ok it looks like I have a clean backup of the efs folder. I took a look and I find the 17 june date at some files
So I am missing the .nv_data.bak, .nv_data.bak.md5 and nv_data.bin.md5 but it looks like I have them in the backup that the app did it. So far only these files are missing... Should I make a full restore or only those files? And should I do it with root explorer copy paste?
Allright friends...that was hell of a scare. I deleted everything from efs folder after downloading a root explorer. Obviously I couldn't delete the folder itself nor rename it, so I had to paste the good files carefully.
All set now back in business, lesson learned, now I have the folder in my computer.
I wonder where did I do wrong, and why none of the method of unlock didn't work...neither chainfire or helroz.
the problem was you messed with 2 different tools.
All you need is the helroz unlock app, be running ics, follow the instructions, backup ya efs, and unlock.
IF YOU change ya mind and need to restore it, do it through the unlock app, NOT through the repair tool he made, yes, it does a similar thing, but if youd used the unlock app to restore efs you wouldnt or shouldnt have had any issues, your the first person i know to come unstuck with it.
be VERY CAREFUL with chains unlock app, it quite often wont work or gives ya the wrong code, which then ends up freezing ya phone, prob best to avoid that all together and take it to an unlock shop.

Yes, you are right, but I didn't thought about it, The first backup made was from the unlock tool. The second one obviously was made by the repair tool, only the problem was that it just backed up the damaged efs folder. I kept trying to restore but that was not the place for repair. Thanks to helroz that he made the backup in 2 different folders, so the bad efs didn't overwrite the good one.
Strange, I thought that chain's method was the safest, already tried it, it took a lot of minutes and prompted that couldn't find any code, I guess I won't try it again.
Should I try helroz app again? I am thinking to do so
And...one more thing, last night when it came back to life I only tested the data part of the sim. In the morning I tried to give a test call and didn't work although I had network signal.
I also tried to contact myself and it was like I had it shut off.
Everything came back to normal after shutting down and turning on again. Do you think it something I should worry, could it be because root/efs folder?
Oh no, Now I lost root acces, after installing busybox 1.17.1 ...what should I do?
anyone... superuser app cant be updated...version legacy, update fail...I know for sure this superbox messed it...
ok, so what you need to do is a new start.
Starting with odin, do no wipe anything from recovery, just go straight to odin and flash your usual ics rom, when you get the green pass, pull the usb lead and pull the battery.
put ya battery back in and boot to recovery, standard one, do a factory reset.
After that boot ya phone up, all should be good, set it up how you want, do the usual to gain root access.
After this use once you have root access, download the appropriate CF-ROOT kernel that matches your rom, and download mobile odin from the market, unzip ya kernel and flash ya kernel through that, if ya must use odin pc, then use triangle away afterwards.
Once youve done this, any EFS backup from the previous attempts on your usb storage or sd card, DELETE the entire folders and contents.
Once youre all set, recovery, cwm and everything, get the unlock app from the market, and follow the steps exactly as is said in the instruction, and unlock your phone and backup EFS.
Now go back to your sd card, backup the efs folder it created to a safe place on your pc and keep it safe.
You should now be unlocked and sorted. after using this app DO NOT USE SGS REPAIR TOOL, it does create a different backup for different purposes, if you feel the need to restore the efs folder and relock your phone, then you must do it from the unlock app.
im confident if you do it all right, you will be ok.
Now I understand what happened: I ran the unlock app, but the developer suggests superbox 1.17, I saw that I already had a superbox version installed but ..huh newbie...went ahead and that was the point where I lost root, I couldn't even passs step 1 with backup efs.
Thanks again....but I was on fire and again acted DIY spirit. I did so many times wipe caceh, factory data and saw that it didn't work.
So I just downloaded a stock rom (btw it's not my network rom, only the firmware matched not the baseband or csc).
-went to recovery, wiped cache, wiped data
- odin flash stock rom
- then odin root siyah
- then, and here is the clever part: screw that 1.17 recommendation and just installed galaxy s unlock without superbox, backed up efs; step 2, restart, step 3 (though I don't know if it was necessary)
And IT's UNLOCKED
Now please tell me if I did something wrong. I should copy that efs created backup in my computer right? and that's it....so much work for what it supposed to be 1 minute job...I guess I'm learning the hard way.
OK, here's what I will do when I come back, I'm late lol because of this,
Flash my H3G LP3 XWLP7 STOCK ROM.
now I don't know the right order, could u please help me here
Root and backup first or backup first and then root?
after these CF-ROOT Kernel - what is this actually? and why? shouldn't this syiah kernel be ok enough?
use triangle away
copy that efs folder that was created last time in my pc.
Delete? all the efs folder related files from sdcard?
what other files should I keep just in case? becaue I find myself formating the sdcard partition often. thanks
the kernel choice you use to root is your preference, i use CFROOT, because chainfire is a tried and tested longtime reliable developer, is apps are usually solid, i was on the galaxy note and chainfires work was always the best.
Always backup the efs to the pc and keep it safe, no real reason other than you then have a backup to restore just in case your usb storage or sd card gets accidentally damaged or wiped, its always wise to have an extra copy of a backup.
i also use cfroot because it includes a version of clockworkmode recovery and the cwm app, using the cwm app you are then able to flash custom roms from recovery, stock roms from the app or even kernels, without ever having to use the pc odin again and everytime you flash a new stock rom through cwm app you keep the root, so no messing afterwards and no horrible triangles or counter increase,. its just the job.
So in order of prefernece, this is how i install and gain root, from scratch.
1 - install my stock rom through odin.
2 - i then use Initial cfroot flasher to flash the zimage of the kernel and gain root.
3 - i then install mobile odin which i purchased because its also a good flashing tool for the phone and of course i already have the cwm app from step 2.
----------------------------
in the future
If i want to flash customisations or mods, themes, custom roms, i use cwm app to boot to recovery mode and flash them from the sd card.
if i ever want to flash another stock rom, the procedure is this -
1 - create a folder in the root of your sd card called firmware.
2 - copy the unzipped file(s) from the downloaded stock rom to the folder you made, and also the matching cfroot kernel for that rom.
3 - Then run cwm app, select Flash Stock Firmware, itll ask a couple of questions and ask about root, select the cfroot kernel you copied to the card as the source for root, not to keep the stock kernel, or youll lose the root.
4 - it then reboots to flashing mode and does what it needs to do, it will again reboot and appl the multi-csc etc.
After this it will reboot to the firmware where you are now on new rom and rooted, bingo.
IF YOU GET A HANG OR BOOTLOOP
dont panic, just pull battery, put battery back in, hold the 3 buttons down to boot to recovery and do a full wipe, then restart the system, job done.
Ok people do you different kernels and methods of flashing, but seriously this is why i flash the way i do, purely so i dont have to piss around with triangle away or jigs to reset counters, all that can be avoided and anyone who flashes a custom kernel through pc odin is just being lazy, there really isnt any need to do that, you can gain root by other methods like the ones ive already mentioned, even mobile odin lets you root your phone when flashing a new rom.
It sounds like you have the system sorted now and running anyway, if its working for you with that kernel then just stick as you are, happy days, i just always stick with cfroot for the reasons ive mentioned.
Anyway glad youve got sorted now, hopefully no more problems.

This is the first time for me with an HTC device. So I need a little help.
I am trying to find a way for rooting the phone without loosing any data or configuration. Can somebody help me?
My phone is HTC One X+ running Android 4.2.2 with Sense 5.
In case I need to take claim the warranty of the phone what I would have to do? Is there something I should do before rooting the device, so that I will be able to unroot it?
Thanks a lot in advance!

I don't know all the answers to your questions but let me help you make something clear.
Unlocking the bootloader is different from "rooting"
Your warranty is voided when you unlock the bootloader, which is an important step to actually "root". Your bootloader is what you see when you reboot and hold volume down. The step of unlocking the bootloader is the step that cause you to lose your data. So I recommend you to connect your phone and copy all the valuable information and files on it to your PC, then once this step is done you can copy it back.
Rooting: Becoming the administrator of your phone (like sudo in linux) , Becoming a SUPERUSER , meaning you can change system files and so forth and so on (Thats the general explanation however since we all have S-ON so its called temporary root but lets not get ourselves to that yet)
How can you gain root access?
1-Unlock the bootloader
2-Install a custom recovery
3-flash "superuser.zip"(which will be included in almost all the guides that you will follow to root your phone)
Once you have root access you will be able to play with your phone settings , but be careful not to break the settings.
Now concerning your final question , how to "unroot"?
Before you flash "superuser.zip (which will be the real "rooting" of your phone) , you will go to your "custom recovery" (most popular onces are TWRP and CWM) and go to an option called "Backup" and you do a backup called "nandroid backup" , which copies your phone AS IT IS , which then you can copy it to your PC. You will be able to restore it using the recovery you had installed as it is. Which technically will "unroot" your phone.
Question you might ask: That is so cool, but can't I do it before unlocking the bootloader and losing all my data? from my EXPERIENCE and what I searched , No.
Then how will I benefit? Since having root access to your phone might put your phone in danger of breaking something , or installing a bad ROM (read about this topic before rooting. Here is a summary: "HTC Sense" is a ROM. "Samsung TouchWIZ" is a ROM, "Stock Android" is a ROM) you will have a full safe backup that you will be able to restore so you can have your phone running again.
Also note the following: Once you have a custom recovery you will be able to install custom roms , when you install custom roms your APPs are deleted BUT the data IN your SDcard directory will not be harmed (Music, pics..etc)
So how can I recover my applications? By installing "titanium backup" you will be able to backup all your applications apk and data, saved to your internal storage, so when you switch roms , you need to redownload the app and then restore your data, and you will have all your data back.
So why can't I use that before I unlock the bootloader? Because Titanium backup ITSELF requires root access to access your apps apks and do full backups.
Also a note, when flashing your FIRST ROM, you will sweat like a pig when you get stuck on "Boot screen" , its called a "BOOT LOOP" , do not fear. Since HTC has all the bootloaders S-ON (till now) you will need when you switch ROMS to flash the boot.img to your phone. HOW?
Google "Fastboot flash boot boot.img HTC" and you will see tons of guides. It should also be noted in every single custom ROM guide that you will need to follow that STEP.
ALSO!!! Do NOT FORGET TO MAKE A NANDROID BACKUP BEFORE ROOTING AND BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO FLASH A CUSTOM ROM!! AND DONT INSTALL A CUSTOM ROM FOR "AT&T" AND YOUR PHONE IS INTERNATIONAL AND VICE VERSA.
I rooted my phone and I wish I had someone to tell me that in a single post , so I spent around 10 minutes writing this guide , which I hope people will find useful.
Best of luck mate

I know its sort of tiring but honestly the payoff is massive, atleast to me. I explored things I didn't know about my phone. I learned information about how the phone is made. These information help you.
Inaddition to having custom ROMs, rooting offers you the benefit of backing up your games which is not available on stock.
Anyway, Best of luck, android is a great world to explore.
I however must give credit to every single one that helped me on that topic, and that's my way of paying them back. To Help others like me who need help

[Q] Installing CM-10.2 Android-4.3

Hey guys, I've rooted, installed CWM Recovery, Unlocked Bootloader, and installed CyanogenMod on another phone before.
The thing is, I've had this phone for about 6 months and wanted to do the same. However, after browsing through the forums, man are there a lot of scary sh*t going down. I would like the request the procedure to install CyanogenMod safely, without losing any Keys/IMEI/XReality/DRMkeys/Etcetera.
I dont know if the method given by FXP is supposed to be this straight forward, but I too like others, do not want to risk losing important stuff if it can be avoided (Keys/IMEI/XReality/DRMkeys/Etcetera).
HOWTO
Install instructions:
first time
- power off the phone:
- hold vol+ and plug usb to boot into fastboot (blu led)
- fastboot flash boot boot.img (from cm10 zip)
- fastboot reboot
- enter recovery, on boot led will be violet for 3'', during this period press vol+
- flash rom zip
- flash gapps zip
- wipe
- reboot
for update just flash rom zip from recovery
Google Apps are not included in this ROM. You'll need to find those yourself if you want them.

Frankly speaking, the forums is pretty much jumbled up, and the existing [Guide] Threads are either incomplete (Lacking important steps), or Unclear (Non-Specific steps).
Perhaps someone could do me a favour by using the template that I have below to help me, and possibly others, to install CM 10.2 on our beast of a phone.
Template:
1. Backup TA and DRMkeys and stuff: http://forum-xda-developers-com/backup
2. Root: http://forum-xda-developers-com/root
3. Recovery : http://forum-xda-developers-com/recovery
4: Unlock Bootloader: http://forum-xda-developers-com/ulbl
5: Install FXP's CM 10.2 :http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2461286
Something like that would suffice I think, as long as no important steps are missing that would cause me to lose stuff unique to my phone, that cannot be recovered if I didn't back it up.
P.S. My version is 14.1.B.2.257
P.P.S. Thank you in advance.
1. Root
2. Backup TA (VERY IMPORTANT)
3. Install Recovery and unlock the bootloader, or the other way around. Both ways work.
4. Install ROM by following the "guide" that you quoted above.

I'm on 14.1.B.2.257, I believe reverting to the previous version causes data to be lost unless you back it up right. *Sighs* How troublesome.

you will have to back up the data anyways. I think unlocking the bootloader does a factory reset, as well one is needed going from stock to CM if i unforget correctly
I am also wondering about this. I'm currently running firmware .257.
I understand that I need to back up the TA partition first (though I'm not exactly sure on what I will loose if I don't). I also understand that to do this I need to root the stock rom. I understand that in order to root, I'll need to first downgrade to an earlier firmware using flashtool. However, after that I'm not so sure what I need to do. As far as I can see, the only method of gaining root currently is to use vRoot, which is currently under investigation for IMEI mining.
How else can I root the device? I was thinking of maybe using the recovery for locked bootloaders here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2426739
Following by flashing SuperSU from recovery as per usual.
Will this work, keeping the TA partition intact so that I can back it up before flashing CM? Assuming so, would I even need to downgrade from the .257 firmware at all?
Thanks,
i have CWM now so can flash custom roms like i did on other phones right?
what does unlocking the bootloader give me? unless i'm wrong and i have to unlock to flash?
all i've done so far is do a backup is all. (did a TA backup a while back though)

OK, so looking into this further, you already need to have root to be able to flash the "CWM for locked bootloader" rocovery. So as far as I can see, the only way to get root in order to back up the TA partition is to give your IMEI to the Chinese via vRoot?
Thank god the stock rom is so good.

You have to unlock the bootloader to flash custom ROMs. You can flash stock ROMs without unlocking it, but you have to unlock it if you want CM, PAC, PA etc.

really, so what would happen if i tried to flash an aosp rom now? would the system partition essentially be read only?
sorry for the Qs but haven't had a locked bootloader since the htc desire (although the s-off for that one was to remap the partitions to allow more room for data) and the reasons for unlocking don't seem to be the same.

Nothing will happen if you try it now. You can easily unlock the bootloader by going to Sony's Dev site, request your key and use Flashtool to unlock it. It takes a couple of minutes once you have Flashtool and the drivers installed. It's also perfectly safe to unlock it and you will lose your warranty. BUT you can easily relock it again if something happens to your ZU and the warrenty will be back.
Remember to backup your TA before you unlock your bootloader. It contains a lot if device info and your unique DRM keys. Unlocking the bootloader will wipe the system partition, but you will still have root, photos, music etc. (But do a backup of those just in case).

i think that's where i got confused with drivers - unlocking.
i have already done a backup of my TA part so that side of it is ok. i'll leave unlocking until there's a rom i want to try. possibly a complete 4.4 or something.
cheers LM

If you've already backed up your TA, it means that you have the drivers installed, so job done All you have to do is to install Flashtool and get your key from Sony (which you will get on your email straight away). Either way, just ask here if/when you want to unlock it so we can guide you through it (it's very easy though).
ran flashtool but gave me driver errors - missing. unable to install the drivers included (i guess due to windows 8 driver signing)

Alright I've received the email to unlock the bootloader now I have some questions before using it..

Alright, I've received the email as the title implies but here are the questions I have before I proceed into the whole process
Is there a way to backup the stock image without TWRP? if so how do you get the stock image backed up if it's impossible how to back up the stock bootlover/recovery before installing TWRP if I were to get rid of TWRP one day?
also is it possible to just root the system without flashing anything to avoid data loss? this would be the preferred option actually, thanks! (Using the be2028 t-mobile version, if there's a premade backup that'll be cool too.)

I am just getting back to messing around with phones after about 5 years. So many things have changed and I am trying to get answers here as well.
I used TWRP and Magisk to root my phone. Installing TWRP will not wipe your data as it is flashed to a different partition but to install TWRP you have to unlock the bootloader and that will wipe your userdata. And no, I don't believe there is any possibility of rooting without unlocking the bootloader. If you decide you want to go back to stock, there are stock roms available and you can re-lock the bootloader on the N10 so you should be able to set it back to just like it was when you first bought it. I say should because I have never done it, just read that it can be done when I unlocked and flashed mine.
I wish I could be of more help but so many things have changed in the years since I've been away from doing this stuff I feel like a total noob again.

No I do not believe there's a way to gain root without flashing anything. There's no need to backup anything you can always use the MSM download tool to restore your device. https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...l-to-restore-your-device-to-oxygenos.4204445/ You should be able to find most of the stock imgs on here already if you'd really need to flash back. I'm no expert either, just my experience with this phone in particular has been pretty straightforward. I never backed up anything lol.
Twrp is iffy i made a backup I'll never use, check out the post about flashing international rom to tmo and metro devices, that's my backup. Also you can run 11.0.3/2 firmware and boot 11 gsi's the post about lir rom has the info. Flash the product_gsi.img referenced there, I have never deleted my product partition and I only leave oos ten installed long enough to take ota's. There are more roms in the source forge page referenced with lir rom post. Flash magisk via recovery, either side load or twrp, pay attention that it flashes partition sda14(super image) or wifi breaks.
