I just switched from Tmobile to Vodafone and before, the mobile network was always H and now on Vodafone, it goes between 3G and H. Does anyone else who has Vodafone experiencing this? It seems weird that it would be switching between the two. Maybe Tmobile just had better HSPA coverage....?
I'm on vodafone NL too. Indeed it switches between the H and the 3G. I noticed though that it only switches to H if you are actually using the connection, otherwise it just stays on 3G. Try updating the weather for instance, you'll see it switching.
That's what I noticed as well, I just thought it was strange. Good to know though.
What do you think of their coverage? I just switched, so maybe that might have something to do with it, but last night I couldn't get any service in my bedroom but with Tmobile, I had a full signal...
I live in noord-holland, and coverage is pretty good. Wherever I am I get at least 3G. Vodafone hasnt been very reliable though. There were two crashes on their network a few weeks ago that crippled the data network but they fixed those errors within a couple of hours, so nothing to really worry about. No problems since.
Same here in the UK with T-Mobile.
When I first had the phone I'd almost never see 3G, just H or G. Now, I regularly get 3G but as soon as I start to use the data connection it usually switches to H.
I thought at first it was a result of me upgrading the radio, but I'm not so certain now. However, data speeds seem good so I'm not concerned.
Regards,
Dave
Hello all - I don't know if there's any answer to this or not but thought I'd throw it out there. I updated Android myself to 2.1 since apparently AT&T doesn't feel the need to. That has been a fine experience and I've experience nothing negative aside from the wireless network speed. My phone now always has the H (for HSDPA from what I understand) instead of of 3G, but downloads, web browsing, and YouTube are all way slower than they were before. It takes 10 - 15 seconds to download a 750k app usually. I have ran the speed test app from speedtest.net and its results confirm this by showing 44 kbps downstream & 750 kbps upstream speeds.
Is there anything I can do to fix this? I know that HSDPA is supposed to be faster than 3G but this is unbearable - I am almost tempted to use EDGE exclusively because that is all I pick up at home (EDGE service that is) and I get better performance when using the browser than I do with HSDPA (although that is probably more mental than anything since when on HSDPA I am sitting there staring at the phone thinking "What is taking so long!" and when on EDGE I choose something and then don't worry about it for a few because I know it will take some time.
Thanks for any advice!

This is probably a network coverage issue and nothing you can do about it from a phone standpoint.
Ha! I love the first response had a joker pic because I was thinking of the joker when I wrote "why so sloooow".
Anyways when you say coverage what do you mean precisely? do you simply mean at&t hasnt done enough in my area for hsdpa to be effective? I do always have a full 4 bars of strength on it pretty much.
Thanks!

Yes, I mean AT&T. Having four bars means that you have a good signal. It does not indicate however how much bandwidth AT&T has allocated to that particular area/tower.
Think of it like a wireless router at home or office. On your laptop or computer, you see that you have a strong WiFi signal but, that does not mean that you have a fast connection as that depends on your DSL/cable connection.
Get my point?
Got it, that's what I feared. So in essence by improving my phone with 2.1 I screwed my phone (currently) with hsdpa

No, it did not screw your phone. Your phone is innocent here. It is probably the network. AT&T may have a problem in that area. Did you try the speed somewhere else?
Nope, haven't tried it anywhere else. I didn't mean screw my phone, what I, meant was if at&t is not so good with hsdpa in my area I am stuck with those speeds until that is resolved because I can't force 3g (my speed when I had iphone 3g was usually around 1 mbps)

I am on att also with the 2.1, luckily im in an area where i get around 2mb/2mb sometimes faster, sometimes slower. Did you try the setting in wirelessnetworks/mobile networks/network mode/ tick wcdma only if not on H. could help not sure, just a thought.

Your phone automatically switches between H/3G/E where available. I also have AT&T and have debranded my phone and did not notice any lag.
your problem is AT&T.
H is higher than 3G. if you got problems with it it`s because the signal is strong enough to use H but it preforms worse than 3G (cunfusing ah?!)
Well I was outside of my town the other day, in the country and noticed I was in hsdpa somehow so I ran a test and out there I was getting on average about 3.7 mbps. I guess where I am most of the time just isn't an optimal spot. Thanks all for the responses!

Hi
Does anyone know how to fix this issue? I am in a good area for signal and with previous phones am consistently on H. With my S2 it frequently switches between 3G and H even if it stays in the same spot. It will do it every few minutes.
This is causing havok when I try and tether and my Transformer and laptop keep getting signal interruptions.
Does anyone have a fix? I have Fast Dormancy disabled and I'm aware there may be some other engineer menus that have signal settings in that might work?
Thanks
Paul

Interesting.. And I thought it was just my network vodafone
Mine also switches between G/H/H+ all within 5 secs... yeah 5 seconds and it is kinda annoying.
Are you on GIFFGAFF as stated on you profile? or other network? cause I thought if might have do to something with vodafone..
Otherwise may be its something to do with the hardware settings, I too would like to know the answer
I've kept mine to use WCMA all the times...

Yes, I'm on giffgaff.
Glad its not just me. Maybe the antenna is a little too sensitive.
Anyone know the secret code to get to the GSM/UTMS bits?

OK. Found the 2263 code but that seems to want to enable/disable actual bands.
Am I looking into it too hard!?

Now, for me wouldn't 3G and H/H+ both be considered as WCDMA under Mobile Network Settings? G and E would be GSM right?
If that is the case, staying on WCDMA wouldn't fix the problem.

Your phone shouldn't lock onto a H/H+ signal unless it has started to download data. That's how the protocol works.
If your phone is sitting idle it should be on 3G.
You should only get H/H+ when your phone is actively downloading.

OK. So how can I stop it flicking between the H and 3G. For instance when I am trying to stream it will get interrupted, or if I'm wirelessly tethered?

i'm from tunisia and have the same pronlem here.
Please developers help us to get rid of this 3g/h issue.
Guys,
I got the same problem here i n Brazil using a VIVO carrier.
I set in CONFIG -> WIRELESS AND NETWORK -> MOBILE NETWORKS -> NETWORK MODE -> WCDMA ONLY
I don`t know why it worked but now its working fine.
Could you test?

No problems to report in Amsterdam.
I'm biking through the whole city to get to work, no disconnects using TuneIn or Google Music. Provider is Vodafone, HSDPA+ all along the way.
Its Android issue
Think when iPhone, Windows phones have not had this issue, wat else other than Android. I have tried 3 different handsets. 3 different network - 3, O2 and Vodaphone. All has same problem. Android is the only thing common. I have been scouring the internet and posted everwhere possible since Dec 2010 from when I became Android user. There is no solution. Everone seems busy making their own Android versions and apps. Result there is no basic data and voice stability on Android. Have been relying on my decade old treo to receive n make important calls. Wonder where this is going. My heart n soul seems to sway to the iPhone lately. Atleast wat they give works well.
Its Android issue
BTW those config settings are useless too. I have even used the code to get into hidden menu and change config but no use. It's the same issue. From H to 3g and from G to E I gsm.
Sorry for the question, but whats the problem with switching? I have the same thing but is not a problem for me.

Nobody should get worried about that switching, THIS IS NORMAL!
H/H+ is an high speed 3G protocol.
Basically:
1. 3G means DL 384 Kbps tops. The modem is under 3G signal most of the time. Whenever something on your phone starts checking/d-loading it communicates at THE BEGINNING under 3G protocol. Also, long ping time> 210 ms.
2. HSDPA max 14 Mbps/HSDPA+ can go as high as 42 Mbps ( topped only by cell tower). If there's need for large packet data or shorter ping time, IT AUTOMATICALLY SWITCHES TO H/H+(IF AVAIL). Hsdpa consumes more power and it's a communication protocol. When connected under H/H+ error correction bits are transmitted along data stream. It's like switching your home wifi on b/g/n. ...or like the automatic gearbox going to overdrive.
If you see a lot of this switching it means there's a lot of downloading/uploading going on.
I have it switching too between 3g and h on o2 and its making the internet so unstable you cannot do anything at all. This is certain not normal as the switch happens every second and continues to do so until phone is off
Mine is also switching to 3G once connection is idle for about 3 seconds. So far no problem and it uses less power than my SGS1 for browsing since my SGS1 doesn't switch to 3G when idle.
Mine is no problem between this signal switching, check your area or check your country maybe too much communication devices there so that's why it is distorted. Just use the common carrier with plenty of cell sites for a good signal of your phone.
What do i need to dial to fix it to 3g only from 2g?
ok i got my streak unlocked off of amazon.com. I'm already a t-mobile customer and i go to my t-mobile store to get a new sim card becuase i lost my old one.so they give me a new one. I go home put my new sim card into my streak and nothing happens. It recognizes my sim card it just won't let me connect to t-mobiles network. i tried to connect to there network outside becuase i thought that it need a better place to pick up a signal but it keeps coming up"cannot connect to this network at this time. Please try again later"
P.s the streak when searching for networks sees t-mobile it just won't let me connect.also the signal bars has a little tiny x over it
You may not be aware of this though it has been discussed here more times than I care to count, but unlocked Streaks will not see T-Mobile 3G signals and are limited to EDGE. It sounds like you're not getting an EDGE signal where you are, and thus cannot connect.
If your Streak is one of the AWS models designed to work on T-Mobile, then disregard my comments about the Streak itself. There is a network issue in that case.
Smart..... I too, have a factory-unlocked Streak on T-Mobile.... The last time I needed a new SIM card, it took about 5-hours from the time I bought the new card before it actually would register on T-Mobile's network..... So it may just take a little more time in your case. Also, check your APN names..... they're under: Menu/Settings/Wireless networks/Mobile networks/APN names..... It should say under T-Mobile US: epc.tmobile.com; and under T-Mobile MMS: epc.tmobile.com I believe these APN fields automatically populate themselves based on the SIM card's registration to the mobile network, so you may need to give it some more time. Otherwise, call T-Mobile's customer service......
Hope that helps

Also, for the record, everywhere there's T-Mobile 3G coverage, there's also 2G (edge) coverage..... Furthermore, my Streak is absolutely as fast, and occasionally FASTER than my wife's iPhone 4 on aTnT's "3G" network ...... Better still, my monthly bill is $67, while her's is $127.... Anyone who tells you it's too slow to run your Streak on T-Mobile has obviously never actually tried it..... They're just fooling themselves and paying nearly twice the price to do so...

I paid $1 for a T-Mobile SIM that I got in the mail. Easy to follow instructions to activate my Streak 5 on T-Mobile. For now, I chose the $2 per day "pay as you go" plan. As expected, I get Edge connection speed. OK, for Google Maps with traffic, email and browsing. Not fast enough for watching NetFlix movies. So far, I get great reception at home and at work.
Is anyone else whos on sprint/TMobile having issues where the phone cant decide wether to connect to a sprint or TMobile tower? When im at my home i have a very weak TMobile 600mhz signal and a strong sprint band 41 signal due to the magic box. I also can pick up the band 25 signal the box uses and my phone refuses to just use the stronger faster sprint signal. It absolutely insists on using the TMobile signal. Is anyone having similar issues? Even on wifi its causing network interruptions so i have to reload a page several times to make it use the wifi.

Mine jumps a lot but never connects to the magic box. I don't think it's enabled for B41? I have a Pixel 3XL that I activate (and deactivate my V60) when I'm at my camper which is where my MB lives.

Mine works with Band 41. Its a big one in the nearby city. It works with all sprint and TMobile bands. Its just prioritizing TMobile bands over sprint ones regardless of signal quality

I have no idea of this is related but.. I'm on T-Mobile, with T-Mobile home internet as well, and for the last several days my phone is having issues connecting and the home WiFi is doing the same thing. I'm in a rural area so my signal is weak, but it's been fluctuating WILDLY since the merger and sometimes it does seem like my phone is struggling trying to decide what to connect to. There's definitely something going on with the network at least in my area for the last 2 weeks for sure

Sounds like this will be happening until the transition is done/5G is more widespread. These are TMobile models. When mine was first turned on at the store it had the T-Mobile splash screen. The ability to access sprint towers was added via software update post merger. I figure once the 600mhz band is fully rolled out the issue will go away as a result of the signal being strong enough.
