Just decided to root my Rezound mostly because of the need for wireless tether. I'm fairly new to this method of rooting, but have rooted an HTC EVO 4G about a year ago and that went much smoother. After trying to figure out the order of things (which i'm not sure i did correctly), I finally started the process I followed which i've outlined below. I successfully rooted, but once i updated to the most recent RUU (3.14.605.5) and semi-successfully S-OFF (i'll explain below), i noticed that i no longer have root access. Tried to re-root, but nothing has worked... Anything i can do??
Here is the process I took (mainly tried to follow this a playlist on youtube i found - sorry can't post a URL):
1. Unlocked Bootloader via HTCDev
2. Tried to perform root with OneClickRoot 1.1, this didn't work.
3. Googled other ways to root the rezound
4. Found rEZoundRoot 1.5 - Tried it and obtained root.
5. Updated SuperUser app, verified root access worked
6. Installed clockwork touch recovery as per the video playlist above
7. At this point i kept reading about all the ICS ROMs out there and decided that's what i was going to update. Noticed that it looked just easier to update the firmware and S-OFF before putting a custom ROM on
8. downloaded the RUU 3.14.605.5. and flashed to phone.
9. during this process i had to relock the bootloader, so i had to unlock again.
10. The RUU also updated firmware
11. Followed the S-OFF directions by running ControlBear for 3.14.605.5
12. Here's where it gets weird. First of all it took me about 10 times to get the wire trick down. but once i finally did, the phone jacked up? along the way (not sure what happened, but there was a picture of a phone with a red triangle with an exclamation point in it). By the time this showed up, ControlBear had timed out. I then pulled battery and restarted. checked bootloader and it's showing S-OFF now. Fully booted phone and it started just fine. Figured everything was OK and continued on
13. After the phone booted i noticed superuser was no longer installed (since the RUU update) I redownloaded. Tried to update, and that's where it failed gaining root access. I then tried to re-root with rEZoundRoot 1.5 and that didn't work (still no root access). Then tried with OneClickRoot 1.1, this time it did much more than the first time, appearing to work. Phone rebooted but still no root.
This is now where i'm at... Stuck with S-OFF and RUU 3.14.605.5 and NO ROOT. Anyone have any ideas??

The "TAMPERED" was never there until one of the final steps above. Not sure if that has something to do with it or not.
Basically all i want to do is have rooted phone with the newest firmware and S-OFF. Then apply any custom ROMs from there as I see fit.
If anyone can help, it'd be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

There are stock rooted versions of the leak, it would be easiest to just flash one on your phone. Scott has them posted and the PKMN Team for Sense 4.0 is amazing!
If you really want to root it yourself first (which isn't necessary) you could use Amon Ra install SU, and flatest binaries zip for SU. That's what I did at first so I could take a stab at customizing and designing.

When you flashed the RUU, you lost root and should have rerooted before running the controlbear. The controlbear requires root and maybe that is what led to your problem. I s-offed first and then updated the firmware. I then had to flash Amon-RA recovery in a PH98IMG file and install SU (through the recovery's advanced menu) to regain root. Finally was able to flash the ROM of my choice.
Thanks for the replies! I actually found a fix LATE last night which worked great. I would've posted the URLs for reference, but I can't... So here's a snipit of that post:
I went back to unlimited dot io, downloaded the ICS hboot package for vigor, and followed the instructions:
fastboot erase cache
fastboot oem rebootRUU
fastboot flash zip jb_hboot.zip
I also had to:
fastboot reboot
That last line was left out of the instructions. Good thing I found that in some random forum thread, because I thought something had failed: the progress bar on the HTC screen during 'flash zip' just sits there at like 3/4 full. Anyway, once I did that, I rebooted back to fastboot and was able to flash Amon Ra. Then I booted to Amon Ra recovery, mounted the external SD card over USB and copied up the SuperUser zip package at androidsu dot com, unmounted USB, went to flash zip menu, and installed that. Rebooted to Android and I now have root.

Following all of that seemed to work in my case, but now seeing what TopGun wrote, I just had the order of things wrong... Good to know for next time and just happy I got it taken care of!
Thanks for the replies everyone.
I am an unfortunate rookie, and have made mistakes, hence the name. I want to return my phone to stock from htcdev unlock, s-on, hboot 1.5. with a boot loop on meanom ICS for the evo 3d. I have tried to use older ruu shooters. Relock with fastbot oem lock, and then pg86img. However with the bootloop I can not access anything unless I unlock again, and then go into recovery. This is all that I can think of at the moment that might help.
Kill the rookie!!! PLEASE HELP!!
I had much the same problem with my cdma, hboot 1.5, S-On shooter. When I was S-On none of the ICS roms would work. The all bootlooped on me. If you follow the rooting method found here on xda, it will get you back to a stock Rooted GB Rom.
go into hboot -> fastboot USB-> run command dos -> fastboot cwm-4.0.1.4-shooter.IMG -> flash the 2.17 firmware-> enjoy.
I had to S-off with Juopunutbear, then re-run that root/flash to get past the bootloops.
Sent from my Shooter using xda app-developers app
Unfortunately I have tried that and it still is not working.
My only suggestion would be to try it a few times, other then that, its above my head.

Have you tried one of the ruu exe files that you run from your computer? If you are trying to go stock, you should be able to relock the bootloader and run the ruu and that's it.

First of all I want to thank everyone that has been attempting to assist me with my problem. I have tried to relock since I am on htcdev unlock and then run an ruu force via my computer. I get an installation aborted error when trying to flash pg86img via recovery. I don't know what else to say.
You can't flash a bootloader zip from recovery. You have to flash it from hboot. Also make sure the zip is named correctly "PG86IMG.zip" without the quotes. Also make sure the zip is on the root of your sd as in not in any folders. Once you've named the zip correctly and placed it correctly then power off the phone. Hold down the volume down button and tap the power button. You should boot into the bootloader wait until the phone recognizes the zip and follow the on screen instructions. Hopefully this helps.

Thank you again. I tried your directions, it did recognize the pg86img. However it did not give me any instructions to follow. It did however allow me to be able to a partial stock state. My software version is still on the teamgenesis sense v2.9 cdma. Although I do like some of the features on this rom, I would still like to be able to get the OTA of ICS when it is released. Any suggestions?

To get the ota release (if it ever comes ) I do believe you will need to be locked and running the existing gingerbread rom. While I am not positive, I think the system uses the props file to determine if an update is applicable, and it will likely not recognize the teamgenesis rom version as being upgradeable.
Now I will likely get flames for saying this, but if you want to put the meanrom v2.4 of ICS on the phone, it can be done with s-on, you just need to follow the correct process. I ran that rom for a while, and it is very stock like, stable, and has a few enhancements that you will not find on a non-rooted stock rom. I never found anything wrong or not working with that rom.
To get it to load, first I downloaded flashimagegui from market, put the meanrom zip file on the sd card and made sure I had a recovery that I could get into. I am using TWRP v2.1.1, lots of folks talk about others like ext4, and I am only going to say use whichever you like, after all it is your phone.
Then with the phone unlocked via the htc method, I started the flashimage app, and browsed to the meanrom file. It extracted the kernel and flashed it. Once that was done, with clear cache buttons selected, rebooted to recovery, and used the install menu selection of TWRP to again flash the same rom file. Once it flashed the file, selected clear cache and dalvik just to be safe, selected reboot system, and it worked great.
Have a great weekend.
So, apparently I am still doing something wrong. I have put the pg86img on the root, relocked to the bootloader, and let it run it's course. However, it will get through with reading it and stops and does not finish anything with loading the system information. I have also tried to run the ruu via usb connection. I keep running into a c++ issue saying runtime error. I have wiped everything and thankfully I did make a backup of the rom and other information that I was runing so I can currently fall back on that.
I am on hboot 1.5, 2.17, and teamgenesis ICS rom for evo 3d.
Apparently there have been rumors that Sprint has finally released the ICS OTA, not that it really matters anymore, but I have run into a few interesting glitches, such as WIFI not staying connected while asleep or disconnecting.
If I have to I am willing to pay to do a netmeeing with someone in order to be able to fix this.
Sorry if it sounds like I am getting frustrated, but I have tried every walkthrough that I have found and have not had any luck with any of them.
Please help.
I forgot to say I am s-on
Okay, so I'm in a bit of a bind. I'm S-OFF, and I tried updating to the global leak and it seems I've lost boot and recovery. Everytime I boot it goes through the splash screen and then a black screen with the phone and green update symbol, then it turns to a red triangle and exclamation mark. any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm fairly experienced and everything i've tried has failed. I tried going into hboot and flashing the PH98IMG again. It took, but still the same result. I tried flashing the recovery in fastboot but it continues to fail, and I also tried flashing my boot.img but it also failed. Any ideas?

Its OK. And once you unlock, it'll reboot. Then you just go back into the boot loader and flash a recovery with fast boot.

You need to use interface to fastboot boot.img then run firmware update for old firmware n old CWR. BASICALLY GO BACK TO STOCK REZOUND N START THE WHOLE PROCESS OVER LIKE DAY 1!
Good news is you don't need to do the wire trick again. Your phone crashed during the firmware upgrade now its stuck in limbo n doesn't know how to handle the 2 sets of hardware commands its receiving from the CMOS.
[Q] Can only get into recovery after attempting Juopunutbear S-OFF
I wanted to S-OFF after being stock locked, with the OTA ICS update. I performed HTC dev unlock successfully. After that, I may have gone wrong during one of several steps.
-Pushed AmonRa recovery 3.15 to my phone (seemed to be successful)
-Flashed ICE-EnableRoot.img (got an error message saying it was unsuccessful, but when I rebooted my phone, SuperUser was installed).
-Flashed vigorOTAStockRooted.zip (because I wanted to try the S-OFF method from stock GB rom)
-Ran HTC Rezound S-OFF Kit By Hasoon2000
-Made sure HTC Drivers were installed
-Enabled USB Debugging
-Put in blank SD Card
-Run Juopunutbear v.6 If You Are On Gingerbread
After running Juopunutbear v.6 for Gingerbread, my phone screen went blank and HTC's splash screen came up momentarily, and then my phone screen went dark. The cmd box that popped up then gave me an error message saying I had to install the HTC Drivers. I went to HTC's website to download the drivers. When I tried to install them, I was told they were already installed.
I can reboot my phone into Hboot and AmonRa recovery and I can do anything from there. But when I try to start my phone, I get the HTC splash screen and then black screen. The orange LED lights up when my phone is powered off and plugged in via USB. When I try to boot from Hboot, I either get a static HTC splash screen or splash screen going to a black screen.
This is what my Hboot screen reads:

For starters, you are on ics firmware so you should run the ics version of juopunutbear. I suggest flashing a rooted Rom based on the ota and then try again.

I successfully flashed one of the stock ICS ROMs! What got me all confused to begin with was the prerequisite that I had to be on a stock Gingerbread ROM or the 3.14.605.5 ICS leak. That's why I tried flashing the original Vigor GB ROM on my phone. I still want to get S-OFF, but I need to read the instructions more carefully. Thanks for your help!

So I just need to flash my backed up boot.img, and then flash the 3.14.605.12 RUU? Then re-root and retry the OTA Global Update?

pretty much. From looking at everything looks like you are on ICS, but its not letting you reprogram. usually happens when an update fails. When you run Juonobear and run the ics upgrade over again, it should reboot like 3 or 4 times. Sounds like you never let the process finish. Final note, i'm not sure where you got your firmware from, but your radios do not look familiar. Not saying they are wrong, just not radio's i've ever seen flashed. BUT, I don't usually change radio's unless there is a huge need for it. you should be on radio's 10r/08r that come with the original ICS firmware update. I'll watch the thread throughout the day to lend support where I can. Hope this helps.

Now I'm a little confused, sorry. I need to run the juopunutbear program again? My radios are 2.22.10.0801r/2.22.10.0803r, Hboot 2.27. I'm downloading the .12 RUU from Android Police. I've tried re-flashing the boot.img from my nand backup, but it keeps saying:
C:\mini-adb_vigor>fastboot flash boot.img
unknown partition 'boot.img'
error: cannot determine image filename for 'boot.img'
edit: I fixed the flash, I forgot to add the partition in the command, duh... So I flashed my backed up boot.img, now I just need to flash the .12 RUU?
I have the backup img in the file where I have fastboot, adb, etc.. What am I doing wrong?

Still to no avail I am getting nowhere. I flashed the stock recovery and did a factory reset from Hboot. Nothing, I have tried flashing the newest RUU, nothing, I'm flashed back to ra-recovery. Can anybody give me a solution step by step to get a ROM loaded and booting?
Well I finally got it up and working. I loaded the old firmware and was able to restore by backup. Thanks to all who chimed in with helpful advice. I'm hesitant to retry the Global update, but I might go ahead and give it another shot.
Glad you figured to restore the firmware. It's not hard to flash the global. Run the firmware, then run the recovery then flash Rom. Do it right in that order n you don't have any issues. Use 2 sdcards if you need to because the firmware upgrade won't delete the ph98 off your card. You will need to do it manually.

Alright I will try to recap what ive done today. I Was rooted with s-off via the thunderbolt tool and had the new ICS rom installed and running fine. But I decided to sell it so I used the thunderbolt tool to unroot and return to stock.
All was going well then in the boot-loader the update failed and i got stuck with boot-loader locked security warning, which would not let me do anything, was stuck in the boot-loader.
After some searching I found a link to unlock the boot-loader via htcdev to fix the security warning and allowed me to finally boot back into the rom but the phone kept shutting down after it booted up past the thunderbolt screen. So after searching I found this link http://www.thunderboltforums.com/forum/htc-thunderbolt-help/7853-how-fix-security-warning.html and used the 2nd method to fix it since I still have a custom recovery on the phone. Now my problem is I am once again trying to get s-off through the thunderbolt tool like it says in the guide but every time I use the tool it says Starting up... and does nothing. Bascially im now stuck with s-on and an unlocked boot-loader. oh I tried to relock the bootloader but it just gives me a security warning again and im stuck in the bootloader again.
Any Ideas?
Alright never-mind I just used the Revolutionary 0.4 program and gained "revolutionary" in the pink field and s-off again so im good there again.
The thunderbolt tool is still stuck at "starting up"..., is there another way to get the tbolt back to stock condition?

If you have S-off then just grab a stock RUU (easiest probably gingerbread) and flash the RUU in hboot. This will completely return your phone to stock as well as unroot you. If you wish to keep root then flash a leaked RUU that someone put up.

If you're already rooted go to the development section and download the new radio and put it on the root of your sd card, rename it to PG05IMG.zip, reboot into the bootloader. The bootloader will automatically scan for the update and ask it you want to update. Select yes. Once it is finished and the phone boots back up. Use a file manager to browse to the radio and rename it. Then download and flash the official ics build. Don't confuse it with the leak. The leak is a worthless piece of crap and doesn't come close to how much better the ota is.

Hi guys.
I was trying to do one of two things. Either get to stock ICS with the RUU or get to an older stock version so that my phone would update itself.
I ran the ICS RUU and ran into an issue. Im on Hboot 2.28 Radio 2.23.10.0123r/2.23.10.0124r
I am S-On and relocked to get run the RUU.
I got an error as it said the Hboot version is older. Now I am stuck on the Bootloader with TAMPERED, RELOCKED, and Security Warning.
I should have known that I potentially had a leaked Hboot version but it was so long ago I forgot.
What can I do? Iv been googling and searching threads without much luck. Do I have to S-off? Can I S-off from this position? The other issue I keep running into is dead file links.

So I think I found out what I did. 2.28 is the Global version. I must of rooted that version and flashed roms. I wanted to unroot and get back to stock software version.
Where should I go from here? Is there an RUU for the ICS Global? I can not seem to find one.
Have you tried unlocking the bootloader again?
Edit: I searched for a long time (a few days ago) but couldn't find any information on S-Off, not going back to stock for people on the latest OTA. I'm not the best person to give advice, but if you're on the current OTA, I don't think you can use the RUU.exe.
Also, you can't downgrade if you're S-On - only upgrade..

Yes I can unlock again and that does get me unstock from the boot screen but still cant get where I want. Hmm.
I wonder if you can fastboot-flash the older kernels, using a computer, then flash the old stock ROM, lock the bootloader, then run an RUU.. Can anyone confirm this? Sounds too simple to work on an HTC phone.
Edit: No, of course that doesn't work. Sorry, I can't really offer any more help.. I'll have to just hope that someone more knowledgeable can take over.

Be prepared, I get rather long winded.
If you were on the most current 4.05.605.14 with S-on which based on what you list as the radios and hboot is what it appears you were on, then you are in a difficult spot. The really bad news is the only RUU you would be able to use is the 4.05.605.14 and no one has admitted to being able to get ahold of. The most current one available is 3.14.605.12 but that is useless to you. You would have to S-off to go back to stock but would have to have a working rom to do it. It's not impossible but it aint easy. I just had to do it about a month ago when I was trying to S-off my replacement Rezound. It came with the most current stock ROM and I didn't bother reading up on the current ControlBear method. In the past, you had to have a rooted rom in order to S-off. So of course, I unlocked the bootloader, flashed AmonRa 3.15 and then used superuser to root it and then went about trying to S-off. I couldn't find my previous windows based versions of ControlBear so I went about making a live cd ubunto disk and trying to S-off. It wouldn't work. Then I read the unlimited.io site instructions and found that the current version needs the unrooted stock rom to succeed. I really never paid attention to unrooting before because if I had to do it, I could always just run the factory wipe and root would be gone but not this time. It kept showing that I was rooted. So I tried wiping data, cache, dalvik cache, and after that didn't work, I wiped the system. Very bad move on my part. Now I couldn't get past the bootloader. I thought I was done for because I knew with S-on, there was no going back and the global rom RUU was still not available.
After trying all kinds of things I ended up
1. downloading the 4.05.605.14 stock rooted rom listed HERE (Thanks MicroMod777) in the Rezound Development section.
2. Then downloaded the current firmware.zip from HERE (Thanks Flyhalf205) and then extracted the recovery.img along with the hboot .nb0 file from it.
3. I then created 2 separate custom ph98img.zip for each so I could always reinstall the stock hboot and the stock recovery.img.
4. I extracted the boot.img from the rooted rom and flashed that first. I don't remember if I did it via adb in fastboot usb or with another ph98img.zip and then
5. I made sure that my bootloader was unlocked and then installed AmonRa as the recovery
6. Then used AmonRa to flash the stock rooted zip file. I then wiped the cache 3 times and the dalkvik cache 3 times.
I let the phone reboot and I was back to a working phone.!!! Then I found out that it was rooted with SuperSu which gives you the option of doing a full permanent unroot which I did. I then put that ph98img that I had made that had the stock recovery.img on it and flashed that in the bootloader. After rebooting I now had a fully stock phone and proceeded to do the S-off. I left the bootloader unlocked as directed by the unlimited.io site. I had limited experience with ubunto but found THIS PAGE that helped walk me through it. I followed it exactly and ended up with an S-off phone. One thing that wasn't clear to me was how to open a terminal in ubunto but I figured that out after trial and error. IIRC, I clicked on the home tab on the left and then in the search box, typed terminal. The first icon that was shown was a terminal emulator and I used that for the commands.
Now I still wasn't finished. I ended up relocking the bootloader but didn't like the relocked and tampered flags that were showing. So I ended up running the most recent RUU (3.14.605.12 found HERE and I now had a ***LOCKED*** bootloader and then let the phone reboot. After it rebooted, I hit the home key and bypassed the setup. I then got into settings and then into software update and let it update. It did a small update and then had to repeat the reboot, bypass setup, and software update. This time it did the global update. I let it reboot but this time, I ran the setup. Once I was up and running, I again went into bootloader and reinstalled AmonRa and used the 3.16 version and made sure to do a nandroid before doing anything further. After that, I got ahold of SuperSu 1.51 and flashed that in the AmonRa recovery. I now had a ***LOCKED*** stock rooted Rezound and several nandroid backups of both fully stock and rooted. Which turned out to be a great idea because not even 3 weeks later after this, the phone started malfunctioning (power button) and a problem with the camera so it got replaced and I had to put it back fully stock. I was already setup for this. I unrooted, put the stock recovery back on, and made it S-on. When the replacement came, I immediately unlocked it, did the S-off (only took one try), relocked, ruu'd back to 3.14.605.12, updated to global rom, flashed AmonRa, and restored with my most recent rooted nandroid. and I am back up and running a whole lot sooner...
I hope this helps.
Very much so! Thank you. If I could hit the thanks button 10x I would.
Im sure im not the only only to have the Hboot 2.28 issue.

This guide was FREAKING AWESOME. It led me to finally after 2 years go S-Off (wire trick) to do RUU, etc. Have to return phone and have already got replacement. Crossed my fingers and everything looks stock stock stock !
