change default dialer? - Galaxy S III Q&A, (US Carriers)

I know this shouldnt be hard, but I have been unable to find the setting or any other posts that mention how to change the default dialer. I have installed Dialer one (I hate the stock S3 dialer). I can use Dialer one to make phone calls, but all incoming calls are answered by the default dialer.
Please let me know how i can change this so only dialer one is used.
Thanks!
(I have not rooted my phone yet. waiting to make sure i want to keep this phone before going that far).

I find that rather odd... Have you tried going into Settings > Application Manager > All and selecting the default dialer and clearing defaults? Though I would think that if it is using it for outgoing calls as default that it would for incoming as well. Have you tried any other dialers to see if it was just that application?

I don't think its possible...

The clear defaults button is greyed out and cannot be pressed. So to be able to fully move to a different dialer does it require being rooted? custom rom? Im not opposed to either, but i just need to know because i cant handle this dialer. I am used to HTC and their dialer requires half the button presses or less to make calls, and makes far better use of the screen space etc... the stock dialer has been by far my biggest disappointment with this phone. other than that I like it a lot.

I've found the dialer tolerable, probably because I don't make that many calls. I'm not that familiar with touchwiz coming from an HTC device myself. Tried any other ROMs yet?

Dialling From Contacts Too Slow

Hi
I find that dialling from s2 lacks following
1. In keypad, it sorts either first name or last name, not both. Very disappointing.
2. When we click contacts from home menu, it does not give option of default num key pad. Only default key board comes when we hit search bar.
Any option, suggestion on this. I find dialling too slow.

Well thats the way it works. Do you know one thing, say you have to call John, you just have to dial 5646. I like this feature so much.
Regards.

If you want to dial someone, open the dialer, not the contacts.
Sort by both names?? Do tell..
Why do you need the numberpad to open from contacts??
Open contacts, swipe contact, you're calling. What's "too slow" about that?
When we open dialer, and say I search a person with last name, his or her name will not pop.
When in contact, for searching, we need to pop up the keyboard. A dialer pad auto pop would have made it fast.
I know it cannot work like qwerty, but in my earlier dial pad of htc, sorting of both names was there.
My earlier e72 too lacked this, but, in a firmware update it was fixed.
Else I have to remember and change many first name.
My query make sence. When we dial, it should be quick to reach to no.

So you want to be able to search both names, not sort them.
It doesn't do containing text searches - it only searches for names that begin with what you type. Just bare that in mind and you can't go wrong. It is fast and easy - it's just different from what you've used before so you have to learn how to use it correctly.
I'm gonna borrow this thread a bit actually. I'm using dialer one since it has all the options I need, but right now I need to get a hold of the stock dialer for entering a USSD code (for disabling fast dormancy).
I've tried entering it in dialer one, but it just said "connection error or invalid MMI-code". I reckon this is since I'm trying to enter it from a third party app. So, trying to find the stock samsung dialer I go. I've checked both phone app and contacts app but cannot for the poop in me find the dialer pad. (You know the 0-9 + * and # keyboard). All I find are call logs, contacts and groups. But nothing about a dialer. I know I saw it somewhere when I first got this phone, but now I can't find it.
Any help?

Have you tried scrolling the tabs at the top of the screen? The dialer is on the far left.
Haha, thank you. I knew I'd seen it somewhere before. And of course it now worked like a charm. Have a good one.

[Q] FACTORY Samsung Vibrant sms popup

Does anyone knows the file name for the factory program that makes the sms popup on the Samsung Vibrant? I want to re-install that program to enable sms alerts when a new text is received. No, I don't want an aftermarket sms popup from a different developer so please don't guide me to an aftermarket one. I just want to revert back to factory sms popup for the sms alerts.
Thank you.
Maybe it's been too long since I've run stock but I don't remember that ever being on here other than 3rd party...
Are you sure the Factory stock Vibrant had an sms popup? I don't ever remember it having this.
I use go sms but there is handcent also both are great

I'm sure the Vibrant has a "factory" sms popup function. Before I rooted my phone, it had the ability to turn the screen on and show the sms envelope alerting me I have a text message or it would show the gmail envelope alerting me I have an email. Since I rooted my phone I have to use 'Glance' app which works pretty much like the factory one (YES, I know, but I want the factory one back). There has to be some file name I can find using 'Explorer' app but I can find it. By they way I've been looking into this on my wife's phone which has not been rooted. I know it's there. If I was able to copy the 'battery charging' sound from her phone to mine, I'm sure I can copy that sms popup file as well. Any clues anyone?
Thanks.
I don't understand why rooting your phone would cause you to lose a feature. It shouldn't and doesn't.
I'm a big fan of the stock Touchwiz, and I never remember any SMS popup.
Are you sure you have a USA T-Mobile Vibrant T959? I can't ever remember anything popping up saying you have an SMS. Are you talking about the notification bar? Or maybe NoLEd app found in the market?

That sounds like you're talking about the notification icon, it should be enabled by default but check the settings in your SMS app, there is an option to enable/disable it.
Ok guys, I guess I was not clear enough on what I was trying to explain. What I mean by sms popup is when you get a text message or email the phone screen turns on for about a minute or so and an icon displays on the top left of the notification bar. If anyone knows how to get this stock feature back on the phone please feel free to share that info. After rooting my phone with Axura ROM I lost that feature and the screen does not turn on anymore. I don't want any aftermarket apps I already have 'Glance' which works fine but once I get the stock one back I will get rid of 'Glance' app. Hope this clarifies confusions.
Thanks
kxlling
I have the settings for sms set already to display notification in status bar but to no avail. Axura ROM took that out.
Have you tried replacing the SMS app with one from another ROM? Or just reinstalling it?
I've never had that issue, but I've never tried axura either...
This may be far fetched, but could the theme you're using be washing it out? I've had it happen before where the theme was the same colors and you couldn't see the notifications.
Sounds like you need the touchwiz mms.apk. The stock Android one doesn't support screen on function. You can pull the file from another ROM and push it through or search the apps section for non-blurry mms by explodingboy. He has the files for both 2.2 and 2.3 roms I believe.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I'm going to reinstall it and see how it goes. I'm not sure if Axura is washing out the app but I wouldn't doubt it. I'll let you know what happens.
Thanks
I already have Glance. This app works just like the one that came with the phone before rooting. Check it out you might like it.
See if you can find a compatible touchwiz app that works with Axura. Barring that, I suggest you either switch back to a Touchwiz enabled ROM, settle for a third party app solution, or try MIUI. MIUI does not have Touchwiz MMS, but it does have the feature of turning the screen on and/or giving notification updates and/or popup updates when you get texts.
Oh, and you can also theme the ever loving crap out of it. And it's generally wonderful.
You're talking about the so called "toast" notification icon on the status bar. Popup is when you get a message and the message itself pops up in a window over your home/lockscreen or whatever app you're running at that time. Anyways, seriously, I know you said you dont want a aftermarket app and I dont know about Glance or why you won't prefer it over your stock sms/mms app but you should consider installing Handcent SMS. Its very custumizable and has that real "popup" feature I was talking about earlier and its just plain way way better than the stock app and I see no reason whatsoever to not use it over your stock app and best of all its FREE!

Thanks everyone for your inputs, I appreciate them. I guess I'll stick with the 'Glance' app, I like the way it works on my phone and I can customize it to however I want.

[Q] Using the dialer's sip client

Hello, after a full day of googling, messing my device up, and headaches - here I am.
Before I go any further it would probably help to explain my device configuration. I have a galaxy player, which has no mobile data or cellular capabilities (essentially a phoneless galaxy S), running unnoficial cm9 ICS. Because cm9 hasn't been optimized for media players, I still have the phone features such as the dialer built-in.
My goal is to get google voice working with the sip feature on the cm9 dialer. Through the help of pbxes.org and trial and error, I have mostly succeeded. The one minuscule yet painfully crippling issue I have is the ringtone doesn't play when I receive a call, even though it vibrates and shows the call screen normally. Now before you ask the painfully obvious; YES I tried setting a new ringtone, NO my device isn't in silent mode, and YES my volume is turned up.
I haven't tried a data reset yet, but that is last resort as I have no way to nandroid. I was wondering if this is a bug with cm9 or ICS in general, or a device specific issue I have. I would be so thankful if anyone that has experienced this and possibly found the solution could share it! Thank You.
I'll take silence as a sign no one else has this issue?

I have looked at other dialers but none of them have the sip capabilities. I also tried some sip clients like sipdroid - which rang fine, although interestingly simplecsp fails to ring just like the stock dialer. I am thinking it is a bug with our cm9 since system ui sounds also seem to not play.

There is no settings with in settings that allows you to put the ringtone so you might have to do it the way I did it. The way was is you have to download zedge and find the ringtone you want and then download it and then it hit set as and it will ask you what you want to set it as and set it as your ringtone and it'll work
Sent From My YP-G1 running ParanoidAndroid beta 2
Hmm, I have no problem setting ringtone.
I have made several important discoveries;
The reason the system UI sounds don't work is because the system volume is set to 0 and can't be adjusted in the system settings, but I used AudioManager to turn it up. Now system UI sounds work fine but still no ringtone.
Another discovery is when I set poweramp to not pause for incoming calls, I hear the ringtone! It plays over poweramp, but this is a huge clue to my problem.

Unable to set the default dialer

I'll give that a Exdialer and always the same with me when the next event will again offer either select an application in which I want to go. Other app are set as default fine. Problem is only the dialer.

Replacing stock dialer doesn't show incoming calls

Hello guys.
My main question is: what kind of system app decide which dialer will show the incoming calls?
I will shortly explain the situation. I have a smartwatch (zeblaze blitz with Android 5.1, no Android Wear, rooted) that has a bug in stock dialer, so I need to replace it.
I installed some dialers from play store, but they were using stock dialer for calls, so nothing.
I used root to install Google Dialer (put it in priv-app folder). It's working fine, except one thing.
When I get incoming calls, stock dialer shows up. If I answer, I hear nothing. I need to open Google dialer manually to talk.
If I uninstall or freeze stock dialer, on incoming calls, it rings but nothing appears at all. I need to open Google dialer manually to answer.
It seems some "setting" decide that incoming calls need to be shown by the default dialer, even if another one is set up to be used to talk.
Does anyone has an idea how to change this setting eventually?
Have you tried the resetting the default association in settings apps stock dialer?
Edit minor text fixes.

Stock dialer doesn't have any association. Also, I think the associations would be automatically deleted when I uninstall it.
So unfortunately I think it's not about the stock dialer. I think there is some other app or setting that redirects to the dialer.
I have some additional information to share, if someone has the patience to try to help
The following are apps that i found that I think could be involved in this issue (app name, package name and size)
In /system/priv-app
TelephonyProvider.apk com.android.providers.telephony 1,6MB
TeleService.apk com.android.phone 2,1MB
Telecom.apk com.android.server.telecom 1,1MB
In /system/app
AutoDialer.apk com.example 44KB
BSPTelephonyDevTool.apk com.mtk.telephony 88KB
The stock dialer that I'm trying to replace is
Dialer.apk com.android.dialer 5,1MB
Does anyone have an idea?
Your issue is that many of the drivers for the device and radio are programmed to that dialer apk. It's the same all over android. You would have to build a rom from source to change it.

Probably, but I have no idea how to do it.
For now, I would like to find apks from other MTK6580 device to make some tests. Maybe I'll have some luck with no need to build an entire rom.
Any idea where could I find stock Dialer.apk and TeleService.apk of any MTK6580 lollipop device? Is there an appropriate section on this forum for this?

Your chip is not gonna matter. As it will need the main frameworks from the rom that dialer and other apks came from. Then you will also need the radio files that work with that dialer. There is no real way to cheat getting around this. It only makes it harder due to the chip itself. Mtk are lousy at providing any info which means most kernels for those devices don't have the source posted.

For sure you are right, but I was now thinking just to replace the stock dialer with another stock dialer from another similar device.
I have some stupid bug (when I call or answer on call, I cannot hear anything, then I need to exit the dialer app and restart to hear the call), and what it really matters is to get rid of it. I'm not really interested in Google Dialer or any other.
So, maybe, if I can find another dialer with the same package name, as all stock dialer should have (com.android.dialer.apk), I could maybe solve without requiring programming skills that I don't have.

You are confused on your issue. From what you just said I would honestly say the issue is not your dialer app. It's your radio/modem (do phones even still use modems lol) this is what really controls calls. Sounds like it's crashing and not restarting. If you can get root a logcat would pinpoint it.
You could try a clean flash of the latest software.

I really am, no doubt.
The fact is that when I answer, although I can't hear anything, they can hear me on the other side. It looks like some "service" of the dialer just stays on background, without crashing, and I need to recall it by opening the dialer app.
Also, the really strange thing is that, if I am using a bluetooth headset, I can hear perfectly and I have no problem at all.
For this reason I was not thinking of some issue about those kind od service you say... Phone line is working!
I have root, how can I take a useful logcat?
Thank you very much for help
