Hello, after a full day of googling, messing my device up, and headaches - here I am.
Before I go any further it would probably help to explain my device configuration. I have a galaxy player, which has no mobile data or cellular capabilities (essentially a phoneless galaxy S), running unnoficial cm9 ICS. Because cm9 hasn't been optimized for media players, I still have the phone features such as the dialer built-in.
My goal is to get google voice working with the sip feature on the cm9 dialer. Through the help of pbxes.org and trial and error, I have mostly succeeded. The one minuscule yet painfully crippling issue I have is the ringtone doesn't play when I receive a call, even though it vibrates and shows the call screen normally. Now before you ask the painfully obvious; YES I tried setting a new ringtone, NO my device isn't in silent mode, and YES my volume is turned up.
I haven't tried a data reset yet, but that is last resort as I have no way to nandroid. I was wondering if this is a bug with cm9 or ICS in general, or a device specific issue I have. I would be so thankful if anyone that has experienced this and possibly found the solution could share it! Thank You.
I'll take silence as a sign no one else has this issue?

You know I do use a third party app but to have this ability would be kind if awesome. Right now I use groove ip but have the dialer would be cool. Have you tried with another dialer or do you not want it?

I have looked at other dialers but none of them have the sip capabilities. I also tried some sip clients like sipdroid - which rang fine, although interestingly simplecsp fails to ring just like the stock dialer. I am thinking it is a bug with our cm9 since system ui sounds also seem to not play.

There is no settings with in settings that allows you to put the ringtone so you might have to do it the way I did it. The way was is you have to download zedge and find the ringtone you want and then download it and then it hit set as and it will ask you what you want to set it as and set it as your ringtone and it'll work

Hmm, I have no problem setting ringtone.
I have made several important discoveries;
The reason the system UI sounds don't work is because the system volume is set to 0 and can't be adjusted in the system settings, but I used AudioManager to turn it up. Now system UI sounds work fine but still no ringtone.
Another discovery is when I set poweramp to not pause for incoming calls, I hear the ringtone! It plays over poweramp, but this is a huge clue to my problem.

Anyone get call recording to work in ics?
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using Tapatalk
I assume it needs kernel support to be done. And we won't have the ability to add it until HTC release the ICS kernel source for this phone which won't be until after the official update.
Bump!
I just (finally) got around to installing Scott's CleanROM 4.5 Pro edition. (It totally rocks Scott. Good work. Donation soon to come.)
Anyway, I've been looking around for a way to record phone calls. I want both my voice and the person on the other end. I don't want any of that speakerphone **** - I want a digitally captured stream of all the audio. It's legal in my state to do this.
Anyone with any ideas how to accomplish this?
Call recorder but its not free its by valex or something like that

This works just fine (100%) for incoming and outgoing sound, at the same time, on Newt's XXX 3 (super old version).
So it's a Sense 4 ROM. But this works, without issue, with all default settings. Test it on Sense 3.6? It's definitely ICS though here, and it works. As far as I know, my kernel is virtually the same?
Hi there,
I started playing with callrecorder yesterday.
The app's thread is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1441643
There's a trial version in the first link of that thread.
It works fine on my rezound (s-off, Nils' Business sense 3.6 v5.7)
One problem I'm seeing is that it *always* records calls. There's settings that are supposed to make that not happen but those settings are being ignored on my phone...
I am interested in a call recorder app. but all of them I have tested only record through the mic so the other side of the conversation can not be heard that well. Does anyone have a call recorder app that works without using the mic? If so what rom are you using? Thanks in advance.
An alternate method of recording calls is to use Google Voice for all your calls. It has a built-in system allowing for calls to be recorded on their servers and then accessible just like your voicemails are from the Google Voice app or the website.

I am aware of this but it does not do it automatically, right? and I believe there is a beep while you talk?
I know this shouldnt be hard, but I have been unable to find the setting or any other posts that mention how to change the default dialer. I have installed Dialer one (I hate the stock S3 dialer). I can use Dialer one to make phone calls, but all incoming calls are answered by the default dialer.
Please let me know how i can change this so only dialer one is used.
Thanks!
(I have not rooted my phone yet. waiting to make sure i want to keep this phone before going that far).

I find that rather odd... Have you tried going into Settings > Application Manager > All and selecting the default dialer and clearing defaults? Though I would think that if it is using it for outgoing calls as default that it would for incoming as well. Have you tried any other dialers to see if it was just that application?
I don't think its possible...

The clear defaults button is greyed out and cannot be pressed. So to be able to fully move to a different dialer does it require being rooted? custom rom? Im not opposed to either, but i just need to know because i cant handle this dialer. I am used to HTC and their dialer requires half the button presses or less to make calls, and makes far better use of the screen space etc... the stock dialer has been by far my biggest disappointment with this phone. other than that I like it a lot.

I've found the dialer tolerable, probably because I don't make that many calls. I'm not that familiar with touchwiz coming from an HTC device myself. Tried any other ROMs yet?
Hello,
I've noticed that when you flash any ICS rom that it originally has the dialer and messaging app like regular phones do, including signal and networking settings.. I would like to know if it's possible that Google Voice calling and Text Messaging can be implemented to the Galaxy so it can be used as a phone with WiFi.
Thanks for anyone who could give some insight if it's possible.

Yes it can. You can download GrooVe IP or Talkatone. GrooVe IP is just the dialer, and Talkatone has the dialer and SMS built right in. However, with Talkatone you have to pay for high quality sound as with GrooVe IP it is already unlocked. To offset texting you can just download the Google Voice App, and use that. That's what I do and is works pretty well. All don't require you to pay anything when calling/texting numbers in the United States, but everywhere else they do charge. Textplus to me isn't all that great because they randomly give you a number and if your area code isn't available then oh well lol.

I have Talkatone as well and it has both voice and text features. The problem that is inherent to the design of the Galaxy Player is that the mic is on the bottom of the device so everytime I've tried to talk to people, they can barely hear me unless I rotate the player so that I'm talking into the mic and then rotating it back to put the earpiece next to my ear. I haven't been able to pair my bluetooth headset to the player but if/when that happens, it should fix that problem.

It's not a Google Voice issue, because I use it on my laptop and have not once got lag. I think has more to do with the device. My sister got lag on her phone at one point and I fixed it by fiddling around with the settings. In GrooVe IP you can go to Audio/Echo Settings --> Echo Cancellation and check "Basic echo canceler" or "Adaptive echo canceler". Also go to Troubleshooting --> and check Audio Processing to, and then Go down to Mic Buffer and change it to medium or large ( I notice the larger it is the more lag). Talkatone I have no idea lol. I assume it has some of the same settings as GrooVe IP.

On talktone there is an echo cancellation option that has hardware and software check. And a echo path delay. Are these similar? there's also a "Jitter buffer duration" can these help fix the delay?

As I don't have much experience with talkatone but it sure does sound the same. I probably should be able to fix the delay. All I can say is mess with the settings lol.

Hello.
I'm using a German version of the Galaxy S3 with stock 4.1.1 ROM.
I own it since few days, coming from iPhones and I'm still learning how to use it.
One very useful thing I've found is the blocking mode. I use it at night to stop notifications sound and to permit only my family calls to go through.
Whatsapp notifications, though, are still coming through and I'm forced to manually reduce the notifications volume to zero.
Is it a bug or am I missing something?
I've tried setting the blocking mode with both time range and "always", but no differences at all.
Thanks.
I was woken up this morning by whatsapp messages, so if anyone has an answer it'd be appreciated.
I am having the same problem.. i think the problem is with whatsapp itself it must be a bug as when u go to notification settings the "ringer" whats comes up as default tone not the notification tone.
hope this get resolved quick! i have emailed whatsapp but got standard email template... delete app ... reboot re install ..etc
No one has a solution?
I have the same problem but a month or two before it did worked. I guess that maybe an update of whatsapp has disabled this. It very annoying waking up because of that horrible whatsapp noise.
Update
Just installed JB 4.1.2 and the problem is still there.
So it seems to be a Whatsapp problem, and it's a very stupid management of the notifications.
The notifications should be managed by the system and if the system says "shut up" ALL notifications should comply.
For me this is a point in favor of iOS.
P.S.: not a fan boy of course. I own both devices and it's normal I compare them.
WhatsApp uses a different method to sounf notificiations, this is why it can sound notifications even playing music (other apps would mute/pause the music for the notification)
I guess someonr could patch WhatsApp, my smali knowledge isn't that good to do it myself.

I understand, but if Google implements a kind of "do not disturb" mode it should know that some apps can use music as notification sound and block that too...
Problem lies with whatsapp. I did mail them about it, no response :/ m forced to put my phone on silent always :/

[SOLUTION] Blocking Mode WhatsApp Sounds
First of all, I do know that this is a fairly old thread, HOWEVER, it is still the first result on google for "blocking mode whatsapp", so i figure this is where people look. So i hope you will forgive me.
I have found a solution to the very annoying problem which many people seem to suffer from.
I have found a way to include the whatsapp sounds under the android blocking mode.
You will need the LightFlow app, (which i believe is a must have app for the S3 anyways (OP said he uses a s3)).
after you got light flow:
1: In What's app:
- disable notification sounds for incoming messages(not in light flow, in whats app). set it to silent or disable at all
2: The go to light flow and:
- enable sound notifications for whats app
- set what ever notification sound you would like to have for whats app when blocking mode is NOT enabled
- under Sounds-->Volume control method-->tick "Android standard notification volume"
Now it you enable blocking mode, it also blocks what's app sounds and if blocking mode is disabled, everything is normal.
hope that helps....took me quite a while to figure it out.
edit: oh and i do not have any affiliation with the light flow app or their developers!!! i just used it for changing lights and came across the sound feature by chance!!!
its a shame. other blockers block it, why can't the native JB also do it?
furstrating. didn't want to install another software on the phone when the block mode works so well, except for whatsapp of course.
Does this exist with 4.2.2 as well?

Yeah, I've got a Nexus 4 on 4.2.2 and the issue is on that as well. It's a problem with the way whatsapp handles notifications, not the Android firmware version.
Thanks Tyler D for the solution, will be testing this later today.
I am experiencing the very same issue on my Samsung Galaxy S4 running 4.2.2.
Do you have any news? I tried to email whatsapp support a few days ago but I am still waiting their reply.

I just wanted to see if other people are getting chat heads(new messenger update) to work. It doesn't appear for me on my DNA, but other people seem to have it working on their phones.
Thanks in advanced!

working here. emojis are a nice touch... but i can't see ones people are sending me... oh well.
interesting well glad its working for you guys - I am not sure what I need to do - should the chat head be automatic? I am getting SMS alerts to messenger - just no chat head showing.
in the messaging app for facebook... go to settings>notification settings> should see a box for "chat heads". enable it. i also made it my main texting app(also in the settings but under sms/mms) not sure if that has anything to do with it though...
Thanks, it looks like I don't have an option for chat heads in the notification settings like I should .. interesting .. I'm on version 2.4.2 build 178229

I cannot see the Chat Heads options in settings (
I can't get the chat-head's option to show up in settings on my Nexus 4 either. I've tried rebooting and clearing all app data, but nothing.
I found the APK for the new Facebook Home application.. it's only for specific devices as of right now... any way to install on our device to test it out?? Do I have to do something crazy like edit build.prop???
I can't get it to show up on mine, either. Reinstalled both facebook app and messenger app to latest versions. Just don't see any option in notification settings..
Here's what I tried and no go:
Uninstalling/reinstalling both messenger and facebook
clearing app data
reset/shutdown phone
and the combination of the 3
I'd be curious if it started working if you changed your build.prop device entry to one of the strings from a phone that is working. Seen this behavior before, far too often, in apps. Restricting settings based on device model, etc, when they're perfectly capable of working on others.
Chat head hhmmm interesting..
Facebook really top it with this

Yea, I am using a HTC one x, and have just updated from an AOKP rom to a cyanogen mod rom. So supported device and no go. Seen the settings on my girlfriends stock galaxy s 3, and have seen the settings and heads working. The thing is, a friend has cyanogen mod on an unsupported phone and it works.. So I have no idea at all.
I did try to get Facebook home working before during the leaks, and am running android 4.2.1... They're the only things different to everyone else maybe????
For people that have it working and not working, what are your setups? Phone models, roms and their bases? There must be a common factor here, or a mod to enable it... :silly:
