I can't seem to find an answer to this simple questions: what is the path to the offline map files saved by Google Maps 6.9?
Workaround to limits
+1
This may be a way to offset the 6 map limit. As it is Maps 6.9 cannot load a trip from San Francisco to Las Vegas.
I downloaded a 71MB map, then I searched for a file of around that size with ES Explorer SD card analyst function... no chance. I thought about /sdcard/Android/data/com.google.android.apps.maps/cache for location, but this directory is only 24MB total and there are only smaller files inside it.
It must be in one of the caches though because every time I flash a new ROM, I wipe the cache and the Dalvik cache and my offline maps disappear. Knowing where this data is stored would maybe also allow users to back it up.
I just tried to download an extra 56MB map, and the aforementioned location increased in size by 8 or 9 MB. However I then deleted this same offline map and the directory size did not change at all...
Thought of the Dalvik cache also but there is nothing in there remotely close to the correct file sizes.
open maps app press left capacitive button offline maps and there it is the offline map
Isn't it in the application's data? Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications -> Maps, then check its data?
I can't do this myself, I have a dedicated GPS unit and I uninstalled the Maps app after rooting

Yes, I know that but that doesn't tell me where in the directory structure these maps are stored

Yes through that I can see that the Maps application is using about 46MB of data, but that doesn't tell me where this data is stored, or how it stored a 71MB map into 46MB of data...
I am getting seriously p*ssed off with this. Just upgraded to the latest Omega ROM, and my offline maps have disappeared again. I took a backup of the previous /sdcard/Android/data/com.google.android.apps.maps/cache and restored it, no chance. I also tried to restore the app data from Titanium backup, still no joy.
No amount of Googling offers a solution. I can't believe nobody has figured this out yet... back to redownloading all my areas of interest...
I keep replying to myself here, but I figure that since the CWM recovery cache wipe function does wipe the /cache partition (which is a Linux filesystem cache), it means that the offline Google maps must be stored in it.
Why Google would elect to store important user data in such a volatile location is beyond me.
Guess I'll go back to using traditional GPS apps like Sygic or IGo.
I'd like to figure this out as well....
yeah...
no tb backup for maps

I've been trying to figure this out for hours now..
Look at this. Before downloading maps:

After:

So it must be in the internal memory somewhere, hidden in the system apps section (?). It's a big mystery..
Anyone know how to get more than 6 maps saved offline? If i try to save another it says "maximum number of offline maps reached"

If we find out where the files are stored, then we can change the name of the files or folder, them I think you should be able to download another 6 more maps.

When you do a ROM backup it does no save the downloaded maps. I've tried so many times and I have been on a quest to figure this out. I even went on Google's website and asked and know one seems to know where the maps are stored

What you're looking at is RAM memory, not physical memory.
If I have time this weekend to set up my computer again, I'll decompile the apk and look at the smali and stuff to see if that helps out at all. Unless someone else wants to do that for me and upload it somewhere for me to look at hint hint
But from what I've looked at I still believe it's stored on the sdcard in /sdcard/Android/data/com.google.android.apps.maps
The 3 screenshots I've attached show that folder size before I have any offline maps, then the size of the map, then the folder size after, respectively. It increases, but obviously not as much as the download is so whatever type of container the app stores the files as must be really compressed or its split up elsewhere...
After I deleted this folder my stored offline maps went away fwiw.
Also going back on what one of you guys said; booting into recovery and wiping cache&dalvik cache seem to have no effect on the offline map I downloaded. as seen in the 4th pic (I downloaded a small map after deleting the folder off my sdcard to test this theory out)
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using Tapatalk
/sdcard/Android/data/com.google.android.apps.maps/cache <- Stored there. Must be, since I am downloading offline maps currently and it's increasing in size. The files are many and have strange filenames but if you backup that folder and restore it in a new ROM, maybe you'll get your offline maps back?
we have s3 with 16 or 32gb right?
in 16gb version we have 11 usable!
so maybe Maps cache goes there! in OS location. maybe it is in ext location in internal storage, so we must search for another partitions
i hope someones like ownhere team find that out
It would be okay to have more than 6, but I'd really like to be able to backup.
Finding Offline Maps
you can find offline maps if you turn your wi-fi off.
go on maps click the left button and go on show offline list.
hope this helps :good:

After finding out my internal storage available space was getting low much faster than it should, I deleted the cache from google maps, opera (and moved its location to the storage card), but I can't find a way to move the cache from the HTC Album.
It takes around 30Mb on my device, and if I delete it, it'll just get back to that size in a few days.
I know I can just delete it every time it's too big, but I'm guessing it makes the albums loading faster, so if it's possible, I'd prefer not to delete it, but to move it to the storage card instead.
Is it possible to change the default location of the cache?
Thanks
This would be good, I too ended up wondering where all my space had gone only to find the HTC ALBUM cache folder taking up 20MB
Ditto^^
I find it strange because this would ultimately lead to a completely occupied memory over time (given you take enough pictures). You'd think they thought about that...
I can't seem to find anything about this, and after looking at the registry, I didn't find any key that seems to control this either.
Is there so few people bothered by this?
i am as bothered as you (and running with very few storage left), and wait for a solution. Putting the cache not on the storage card was quite dumb from HTC given the very limited storage. Unfortunately, I am a solution leecher, not a seeder.

Sorry, probably a noob question but how did you do it for Opera ?
Thanks in advance
It's in the camera settings. Start the camera; select the strange box on the bottom left with an arrow on the side; hit the "settings" wheel - looks like a cart wheel; then you should have a big box in the middle of the screen with settings options; now select the lower left hand box labelled "storage". When you have the "storage" option with the picture of a SD card then that's where the photos will go.

For Opera, it's not too hard.
Open Opera, and type "opera:config" in the address bar.
You'll then be in the config page, find the section "User Prefs".
In there, you should find something called "Cache Directory4". Just change that path to any directory in your storage card (for example : "\Storage Card\OperaCache").
Cheesy Dave : Thanks for the answer, but as johncmolyneux said, it's the cache I'd like to move to the storage card (which contains the thumbnails of your images along with other information).
The pictures are already going to the storage card.
Thanks for the reply !
Hi, whoops - sorry I misunderstood the question. Now where is the cache kept ?
I did think the question was simple; but, I thought it might help to explain the settings in the camera.
Confession: I've no idea where the cache is kept. Must explore ...
It's kept in \Application Data\HTC\HTC Album\Cache\ in the internal storage.

A bit off topic; but the same cache problem applies to the google maps and youtube applications. Offcourse we could always empty the cachefolders manually now and then, but I would still like some kind of tweak to solve this problem.

Concerning Youtube I don't know how to do it, but for Google Maps, if you get a new version of Google Maps and chose to install it on the storage card, it will put the cache on the storage card as well.
this came to my attention last night when my phone totally ran out of storage when i wasn't actually storing anything on it. i had about 50 mp3's and 10 pictures but all on the storage card. as i didn't know what to do i reverted to clearing the storage which essentially reset it.
i cant believe this problem isn't topping the forum its a massive issue for me. i monitored the storage during a web browsing session this morning. i lost about 10meg of storage in 20 mins and this wasn't cleared when i ended the session. what i dont understand is opera is set to have a 4 meg cache limit. even if someone works out how to transfer all the cache files to the sd card it wont really help as it will eventually fill that up. is i did very little with my phone in the 1st week of owning it other than surf im fairly sure it must have nearly all been browser cache. 130mb of it1! so in fairly sure it will just keep munching and munching storage.
i now have a very tough decision to make i love this phone but i have 24 hours to send it back to o2 and swap it for something else. whats everyones opinions is this likely to get fixed and how long will it take? or should i give up and get an isheep?
Surely htc could just add an option in settings to empty all cache, or auto empty
@jimsteach
A few posts back up this thread there are instructions for moving the Opera cache to the SD Card - it's pretty much an essential in my book given the storage situation on the device.
I too have trawled the registry trying to find where the Album cache is set, but it looks like HTC have modified the architecture and/or use of the registry in building Sense. I'd also love to be able to move mail to the SD Card, but the normal tweak doesn't work for that either.
The location of album cache seems to be hardcoded in HTCAlbum.exe. The Unicode string "\Application Data\HTC\HTC ALBUM\Cache" occurs 7 times when searching in the file with a hex editor. This weekend I will try to modify HTCAlbum.exe and insert a location to storage card.
What puzzles me most is the size album cache can grow to, it seems almost unlimited. I mean, I have never seen any complaints with other devices. The only reg key I found is "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\HTC\HTCAlbum:cache_serial". Does anyone know what this does?
And another key: "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\Profiles\SDMemory\FATFS:EnableCache"
Anyone?
My niece is having issues with her Amaze 4G. The application memory is full (the 2Gb partition) is full, but after reviewing the list of apps in Manage Applications, there isn't 2 Gb's worth. All apps have the Move to SD button grayed out. I am unsure how to move items over to the other internal partition (10Gb). Please advise, and thank you.
any ideas??
some games have a big package that downloads with them and i dont think it shows in the apps size.
doesnt sound like you have a external sd so you should probly get one
maybe some more details would help
There is a 32gb sd card in the phone, and the 10 gb internal memory partition is empty. I've also put Apps2SD on the phone but it only recommended to move 4 apps, each of which were less than 1mb. In the Manage Apps list the largest app was Facebook at 50mb, with a series of others dropping in size quickly after that. It seems to me that the phone has been saving all app data to the 2gb parition but I can't see it in ES File Explorer to manage.
Also what common apps can typically be moved to the SD card?
Thanks!

I believe the problem you guy are having might be related to a full cache...use a file explorer to check /cache and see if there any files in there. If you see a bunch of apk's in there, that's your issue. You can delete them all no worries, but dont delete any folders
How do you use a file explorer? Thanks.

Downloaded that application and no apk files there it's getting annoying because I have a load of applications to update.
What I would do is move all the apps back to the phone and save any files that are needed/wanted to the pc. Then go and clear phones internal sd card. Then move everything back.

I don't have an sd card!
The phone comes with an INTERNAL sdcard. That's where moving applications to sdcard goes to.
Go to Settings> Applications > Manage Applications then go to each app and move it back to the phone if it gives that option. When you're done connect the phone to the pc and transfer any wanted files to the pc....this is called backing up your sdcard. When you're done with that then go to Settings > Storage and pick Erase Phone Storage. It will erase everything on the phones INTERNAL sdcard. That's why we backed everything up.
Now first thing you should do is move your apps back to the INTERNAL sdcard. So go to Settings > Storage >Make More Space and you can mass move any of the apps that you wish to move back to the phones INTERNAL sdcard. When that's done you can opt to move the files you saved on the pc back to the phones Internal sdcard.
You should also have your niece or her parents invest in an sdcard to put into the sdcard slot. So any pictures or music should be saved on that instead of using the phones internal sdcard. I would suggest a SanDisk 8gb or bigger with at least a Class 4 rating.
Chuck Norris can but Walker Texas Ranger can't.
I'm having the same issue. When I go to update apps from Google Play, I get an "Insufficient Storage Available" error.
Astro doens't show anything in /cache, but I have a feeling that's due to it not having global read access. The 2.5GB partition only has ~200MB free. I started with tons of apps installed, and I've had to start moving them off to SD or uninstalling to free up enough space to update the apps I really care about. The thing is, the size total for apps shown in the settings menu is constantly droping, but the total free space always ends up back around ~200MB. It's almost as if some app on the phone is filling up a cache or log file and isn't cleaning up after itself.
What folders in root comprise the 2.5GB partition? I'd like to see if I can determine where all the space is going. I've had an open ticket with HTC on this issue, and their solution is to factory reset. They're supposed to call me tomorrow night to work through this (I know how to factory reset, just want to hear what they say). I don't want to factory reset until I figure out why I'm running out of space as I figure I'll just end up in this same situation again.
It's very strange that many people are having this problem with the stock rom. Have you guys checked the available storage space by going in to the setting/storage? You should see 'Internal Storage' on the top. Do you have more than 50mb free? Theoretically, 50mb should be enough to update most apps through the Market (Play Store). Did you clear cache using the 'Make more space' option? What happened when you did it?
If you have enough space, yet cannot update apps, you probably have junk files sitting in some other partitions that are not included in 'available storage' calculations. If that's the case, then moving apps to sd card won't fix the problem. If your phone is rooted, it would be a lot easier to diagnose the issue and correct it. Without root, I can only think of one option; factory reset will probably fix the problem.
By the way, if you have to factory reset and loose the existing data anyway, you might want to use the opportunity to unlock the bootloder and root it at the same time.
I got two times the memory full message with Android 4.0 even there was enough space. After reboot it disappeared.

Without root, you won't be able to see much using Astro (or any file manager) because of the read restrictions on many directories. I believe you are correct about the system not cleaning up junk files. And unfortunately, they won't be accessible without root unless HTC included such an utility program to clean it in the stock rom. I doubt it, though, because their 'make space' process only gives you the option to clear cache and delete/move apps.
I know factory reset is not pleasant if you have lots of app data you want to keep. Time to root, maybe?

One S? Are you in the wrong forum?
Anyway, what were you doing when you got the error message? Downloading something? ICS may have a better cleanup routine than GB built in so that rebooting would solve the problem... Or you haven't used your device long enough to accumulate junks.
I have an HTC Sensation running CM10. The very day I installed the CM10 ROM this problem started, I get an error saying " Storage space running out. Some functions may not work". I can clear the data and everything works fine until the next time it happens. Some days it happens 2 or 3 times a day. As far as I can tell, this is not a common problem.
The only thing I can think is that it may have something to do with my BackCountry Navigator app. It has lots of aerial photographs. I suspect that it is trying to catalog them all. But, 700MB seems excessive. I have been trying to locate this large file or files to see analyze the data, but I'm not sure where they are located.

If you figure the average picture is approximately 1MB in size, and ariel photographs are usually very detailed most likey 2MB (Or greater in some cases) it's not unrealistic for 350-700+ pictures to be cached by the app as you use it to navigate and view maps. Even navigating a small area with that level of detailed images will occur a large size cache quickly, which is likely why it sometimes fills up 2-3 times a day. I would recommend going into system settings, then application manager, and locating BackCountry Navigator then clear the apps cache. Also check the apps settings and see if it has any options for disabling image caching or limiting the cache size.

Try using root explorer or a similar root enabled file browser to go to the application data folder then look for the BackCountry Navigator app's data folder and see what files you can find, you may find some hints as to why the application is using so much storage space.
Did you ever get this sorted out? I have the same problem. Sold my last phone due to this problem. It definitely has something to do with BCN. Is there a way to tell the phone not to catalog that folder?
BTW I'm running it on an S3.
I'm having the same issue on my EVO LTE, running Viper ROM so it happens on Sense too. Either I get a notification to move apps because I'm out of space, or I'll get an install error when trying to update apps. It's always Media Storage is huge, I can clear it but then sometimes my Music Files don't get recognized by players even though I can see them in a file explorer. Very frustrating.

I saw the same thing as your 'Disk Usage' thumbnail above, except the path was "Storage card -> Apps -> Media Storage -> Data", and it was using 3GB (out of 5.8GB total internal capacity available to end-users). Clicking on 'Media Storage' and clicking 'Show' brought me to the 'Amazon Fire Media Storage' app (a system app, the logo being 'Fire' in a red square).
After clearing all the 'Media Storage' app data, it got regenerated to 3.7GB after a couple hours and filled up my internal storage again. I then deleted an ebook reader app that I remember installing a couple days ago, and it automatically shrunk to 300MB shortly afterwards without my manually clearing the 'Media Storage' app data. About an hour after that, though, it regenerated back to 3.7GB and filled up my storage again.
Anyone know what files are consulted to populate this Media Storage/Data file (i.e., video, audio, ebooks), what process/processes populate it, and what reads it? It would be really helpful to examine its contents to at least look for a rough idea on which apps are using it heavily, and/or honoring '.nomedia' to prevent scanning.
Device: Amazon Fire 7in KFFOWI, running rooted FireOS 5.1.1
The desire x is my business mobile, so i dont want to mess with it in case any problems and i get charged for the phone. to be honest i struggle, its terrible device compared to my personal phone.
I need maps to navigate around, the connection in London drops when im close to destination, i blame this on the tall buildings blocking signal but not sure if 100% the reason. i was told may help to download a map program and use this way, but there is no storage free, and i have only 2 small apps required for work.
Is there a way to delete apps like chrome and facebook / twitter which came pre-installed but i cant remove them.
I tried adding a sd card but it wont allow me to move apsp to sd card. ( so failing the deletion of apps, can i roll back the rom to a older version?
pretty weird that the data partition is full, when there are only 2 apps installed.
are you storing all your company-mail on your phone or something like that??
whatever, as first step you can try to locate the storage-hog by using a storage analyser like https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mobile_infographics_tools.mydrive&hl=de
i have downlaoded the program but not sure what i am lookign for?
can i remove the android APK files? surely once program isntalled i no longer need these?
A takes 591mb
O takes 127mb
App storage is taking 2.51Gb of 2.91 available.
Apps = 704Mb
other = 1.82Mb
Available - 408Mb but when i download the map program it requires me to download a large file for offline maps. plus i have this space as i deleted a few photos which were for work but old. so when i take photos this space decreases further.
the only apps i can uninstall are the two apps (about 40Mb each for work, plus i have pocket locker and now this analyser which have small footprints).
Very peculiar issue occurring: there are a fair amount of photos and videos that show up under google photos under library -> photos on device -> camera with SDCard Icon.
But the location for these files is "/external/video/media" or "/external/image/media" under ""On Device (size)." The other files taken in a similar way are correctly on "/storage/9C32-13OC/DCIM/Camera"
When clicking these files, they play normally, clicking share and More or Create Link says "Error, could not download media" and using Google Photos to Move / Copy says "Trouble Moving 1 item"
When ejecting the SDCard and physically removing it while keeping Google Photos open, all the files actually on /storage/<ID> disappear, and all these weird files remain and can be played. This is how I discovered it wasn't just today's videos, which were mysteriously not being uploaded to my nextcloud. No other app can see these videos/images, including the system's gallery app, and they are not in the internal emulated "SDcard"
These are on my SO's phone and I use the exact same model phone. I did discover that I do have some files like these but hey are all older than the oldest file on my SDCard, e.g. Google Photos has somehow decided to cache them. But on my SO's phone, these files are intermingled with the ones she's actually taken
Interestingly when I switch the google photos account to another google user logged on the phone, those files disappear. I did try moving files to the locked folder but it says "Trouble moving to Locked Folder. Try again later"— I did verify I could move files actually on the SDCard there, and they are then removed from all views except Locked Folder.
In this folder, on the top right when clicking the SDCard Icon, it does show the "SD Card folder" as "file:///storage/9C32-13OC/DCIM/Camera" as expected.
I searched for the filename in a file browser as well as in adb shell (using find / -name "filename" 2> /dev/null) and nothing comes up. As there are some lengthy videos in here, I used DiskUsage to see what might be using a lot of space, and the Google Photos app is using 7.55 GB of data, so it seems like they are being stored there. And it makes sense why they can't be found, as /data/data/com.google.android.apps.photos is only accessible by that app or the system, and I'm unrooted.
My SO said she took them the same way she normally takes photos and video, and of course when I take some they show up on the actual SDCard. I suppose in theory I could use adb backup and follow instructions on how to decrypt the data files, but really what the heck is going on?
We aren't on the latest phone or even the latest Google Photos app (could be a bug with this specific version, but then again google photos isn't taking the photos/videos, the system Camera app is). I could try upgrading her google photos but I also don't want to lose these videos of our kid. It does seem like it would back them up, but we don't have enough Google Storage to back them up online (hence why we use nextcloud), and they don't even show up under different google accounts as mentioned.

Well this didn't work, as google photos does not back up with adb, as some apps can specify this.
Some of these videos did get uploaded to google photos, but they are (now) compressed to under 1/8th their size (the original size is noted correctly in google photos), and from 4k to HD.
From what I had recalled, when they are first uploaded, they are available at their original size to be downloaded. So I tried deleting one to get it to re-upload, and now that video no longer shows up on my SDCard under "/external/video/media" so I basically lost the original HQ video of my kid, great.
Any ideas?
