Hi all, im new to this android rooting stuff, i have jailbroken many apple devices, but im a big noob with rooting.
ill start from the start, i rooted my samsung galaxy s2 (I9210T) the other day with a stock ROM, using Odin and what not, it worked, no issues, but some non-market apps werent working but because of the stock ROM. So i followed a link that led me to "XDA"
In a hurry to root my phone with a custom ROM, i accidentally used a rom made for the I777, it booted and it all worked, just not the touch buttons at the bottom, (obviously), so again i downloaded a new ROM to get these buttons to work, and thinking im smart, i thought i could skip a step, and instead of flashing the phone again with odin, i loaded the clockwork recovery, and loaded this new ROM, without unloading the other thinking it would work, rebooted it, BUT it didnt reboot, it wont stay on, attempting to get into recovery is futile, and the phone is completely unresponsive, the computer makes the USB connection noises everytime i plug it in and take it out, but thats it, i do realise what ive done is completely idiotic and stupid, but is there anyway possible to recover my phone without having to take it in, or get a JTAG done?
Thanks to anyone who has a solution.

well first sorry for ur present state ma8, if ur phone is not able to get into dwnld mode than its really difficult to do anything except for a JTAG done
just try using the three button combo Vol dwn + home + pwr butt and check for dwnld mode if u find success then flash a stock rom and u will get out of the situation
yeah, ive tried that so many times, too many to count, but, when doing it while its plugged into my computer, it makes the "USB disconnected" noise, which is weird.
i dont know where i can get a JTAG done, as i only recently saw it, not looked into it, im assuming phone repair shops do them? or can samsung do them even if the warruntee is voided, would they do it for a price? :s

that actually might work!! hope it does, atleast the jigs are cheap, orded one off ebay, should be here soon..... fingers crossed.
Erm, jig might help, but sounds like you've flashed a bad bootloader. Or a good bootloader, if you've got a I777. On the bright side, you've now got a really attractive paper weight. People will think your incredibly rich when you throw around a Galaxy S II just you just don't give a ****. Next time you're at a club single out the sluttiest girl there, go up to her and ask if she will have sex with you for a Galaxy S II, tell her the phone is out of battery, then go and do your business. When you hand over the phone make sure you are confident and humorous about it, give her a charging cable to make it look super legit. Oh and you should probably be wearing a balaclava throughout the whole process, you don't want her seeking revenge when she knows she's been used.

As funny as what you said is XD i dont think telstra will be too happy that im using my phone to get with chicks, maybe after the 24 months is up XD
funny stuff just happened, i sent my phone away to get fixed, and it took them two weeks +
way too long, and when i got it back, i didnt have to pay, and this is what the samsung team did, as follows: Removed and replaced LCD screen with a new one, removed and replaced FPCB, checked main PCB, software upgraded, cleaned contacts, re-aligned connectors, reset to manufacturers specifications.
in other words, thanks to my Jig i bought off ebay, THEY DIDNT HAVE A CLUE WTH HAPPENED WITH IT!, but far out, what a repair eh?
Take a look at this, they can resurrect hard bricked phones:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1429491
The total price is about £40 I think, hopefully it can be fixed! good luck!

You flashed a I9000 ROM on an I9100 device?!
Kiss your phone goodbye unless you jtag it or send it to the service center.
You have flashed a rom for a different phone. The rom you flashed is for Galaxy S not Galaxy S II..
I have read a thread similar like this before but
for what I can remember his phone is permanently bricked. You might want to search
in the Q&A thread. This thread is for Android Development.

i don't know how i missed that. could you tell me what jtag is? is it the same as a jig?
thanks.
Yes it is totally bricked. Unless you have chance and want to try something. The USB jig to put i9000 and i9100 phone in download is the same ( Both use 151k oHms). If you try to use a jig on your phone you might be able to put it back on download mode. However, i would doubt that it work. Since you don't have the good Bootloader on your phone, i'm more like 97% sure it wont work. The black screen only is also a good sign of death. Sry to ear that. JTag is not the same thing than the jig btw. JTag is how they put the first information, at factory, on your phone. It can be used to put back the good bootloader on your phone. But if i remember well, only phone compagnie ( On this case Samsung) and a few person have what it take to make a JTag.

Thats from the creator of the i9000 ROM you just flashed.
Your phone is 100% bricked, just wondering why did you flash an i9000 ROM on a i9100 ROM, thats not only the wrong phone, but you also added a PIT files with Odin which also is not good for the i9100, and this ROM contains bootloaders.
its 100% bricked, however there is light at the end of the tunnel. A good friend of mine at Mobile Tech Videos can fix your phone 100%
hes the only guy that can do this around the world, only does it for 50 dollars, and he can guarantee fix your phone.
Just dont do this again, maybe next time flash DlevROM

I mean this guy is 100% trusted, and email him if you have questions.
hes the best bet for getting it back fast, and working.
Samsung will most likely play games, take longer, and ask you how this happened.
its your choice, but hes 100% legit, you dont have to use him Im just saying this is the best bet for saving you
Maybe if is better to send it to Samsung and let them figure it out.
If they ask what happened, just tell them that you left it on charger snd a few hours after it was dead. After all i doubt that theg can get info from inside the phone.
They will make a clean flash plus bootloaders.
That is what would i have done.

Just send your phone to get repaired. then next time please read properly and more carefully before you start playing with rooting and flashing

the reason why you should send it to dlev's friends shop to get it fixed instead of samsung is if samsung finds out what you did to the phone, they will probably charge you an arm and a leg for it...

Send it to sammy. If they wsnt to charge you alot then take it to the other site.

well she should because one they WONT charge her and two i know who i out of the two i would trust to send my phone to. and the OP when she sends it should just mention something wrong happened hence why the phone is the way it is now...Either way its her(sorry just going by the Katie bit) to do what she wants..Either way i hope the OP get's the phone fixed and next time reads before she does flashing or roots....
I've been trying to get my S2 right for awhile and finally traced some of my problems to a bad microusb connector...Anyways.. was in the process of flashing back to stock from cm7 with Odin and the phone hangs on the downloading screen, waited an hour and nothing changed. I know it says to not power off device but there was no way around it. Now the phone is bricked pretty darn good I believe. I can't get it to come on at all. I've tried the 3 button recovery mode, the download mode, and the good ole fashioned power button. One interesting thing is that the phone gets warm to the touch when the battery is installed, like it's trying to process something. Any Ideas what I can do?
Pull the battery and leave it out. Next try to put the phone into download mode by holding either one or both volume buttons while plugging in the USB cable. The PC will provide the power. If this boots to download mode, you can try flashing again from there.

Only guess work as to what happened. If there are no signs of life no matter what you do (aside from the phone getting warm) then one guess is that the usb port failed/disconnected during the flash of critical files. However, the stock package does not contain bootloaders, unless you used one from the download repository. So like I said, just guessing.
Anyway, I don't know any thing else to do except jtag repair, and with a bad usb port, that would not be cost effective. If it's under warranty, then go for warranty replacement. As far as I can see, you didn't cause the problem by what you did. It looks to me like it was due to hardware failure.
Already ahead of you I called att for warranty yesterday. I'm thinking the same as you as far as a bad USB port messing my flash up. The phone had been giving me all kinds of fits lately with that and I had that camera buzzing issue as well. Through my searches on this site it seems like the USB ports on our phones are a weak point. lots of people having trouble with them. It looks like the same port other devices use so do any of you know if ours is a cheaper one or is it just the nature of the beast with phones because of all the plugging and unplugging that a phone naturally goes through in it's lifetime?? And what about the camera buzzing? Anyone figure out what exactly causes that? If I had to guess it would be using the LED as a flash light, that's when I noticed it happening.
I'm just thinking ahead to when I get my replacement now and want to change any of my habits with the phone if that will extend the life of it.
On a side note, they offered me a skyrocket, to which I pitched a fit to no avail. I ended up accepting that but with the stipulation that I get a i777 when they are back in stock. I may escalate it to customer relations to see if I can get an s3 out of the deal. Though to be honest I would take an S2 over an S3. I love my S2
I just got a galaxy note for my galaxy nexus last night (traded) and I took it home and install goomanager and downloaded a rom that was "compatible" it saved to the directory that goomanager puts it in so I rebooted into CWMR and cleared cache / data etc then proceeded to install zip from SD Card. it started by saying flashing kernel 4% or whatever and then came back with an error. me being as bright as I am recently...I fixed permissions and rebooted thinking that it would at least let me back into recovery.
I now have a "Dead" note sitting on the floor infinitely "charging" so to speak its just plugged into the wall, Will not boot. Is there a way I can at least get it into Download mode? Hell stick a magnet on it to erase everything even?
I don't need another paper weight..I have an iPhone for that.
Can you boot into download? If so, use Odin to flash the correct kernel.
Can you boot into recovery? If so, flash the correct kernel.
If you can't do either one, your phone is bricked and you will need to send it for a repair. $50 and one week later you will have your phone back with stock 4.0.4 ICS rom. Its called a JTAG service, from www.mobiletechvideos.com. Many note user have gone there, from just this thing.
The jig that works with other phones 99% of the time won't work with the note.
Don't trust CWR. Get your roms from our developers.
Jig 99% Of the time won't work... you made that statistic up. If button combos aren't working it's definitely worth a shot, resistors are super cheap, especially compared to jtag which doesn't sound needed here yet.
And what do you mean. "Don't trust cwr get your roms from the devs here"?
That is a recovery... he didn't download anything with it, he used goomanager.
And even if he downloaded it from here...he would've flashed it in cwm... xda isn't a custom recovery...
So you tried holding the down volume button+ power to get it into download? Flashing a kernel will not remove your recovery/download mode unless you flashed a Rom not made for your device that installed something on said partition(s).
As for the jig...don't know statistics, but I am a one percenter. Worth a shot imo.

Volume down and power, then when prompted volume up, for download mode.
And I'm also a "1% er" and my jig isn't homemade. Josh from mobile tech gave me one of his he sells on the site.
As nun said, the combos should work, they are in the bootloaders, flashing a kernel won't effect those unless says kernel is for a different device, then you wouldn't get a single thing outta the device at all, no charging screen, no bootloop. Nothing. Whatsoever.

Right amigo 99% + 1% = 100%. You and Nunhugger are the only ones who said a jig worked for them. So actually its way higher than 99%. . . But you guys are ninjas. Your phone would probably reboot if you just told it to. I just wanted to kill the eventual jig question early.
And my response about CWR was because it sounded like he used the old app Rom Manager to see what was available. Clearly it was wrong so I told him not to trust it, and put in a plug for our developers.
When an update is released the forum gets slammed with complaints about bad flashes of incorrect kernels, and I have seen several members heal their phone by flashing the correct kernel. I just figured he was not accustomed to the button combos of the note and would get to that eventually. But if it was for the wrong device I wanted him to get his mind around the $50 and week wait.
Sheesh. . . decaf.
Well seeing that I can't Get into either mode and no button combos will work, I am assuming I need the JTAG. I figured an app like GooManager would have at least gave me the right roms for my device. it did say i717 but that could just be my memory playing tricks on me.
Man, I'm real sorry. But the JTAG service has been used by many, and with lots of positive comments. Good luck.
hahah thats okay, I mean its a great phone, definately not worth keeping in a draw collecting dust so I will go with the JTAG service. Thanks Guys!
You still have signs of life, it shows the charging animation, therefore your phone isn't bricked.
Do some searching on making a jig, I personally think it's well worth a try.
You could very well fix your phone for under $10 and have the satisfaction of accomplishing this yourself And have the know how to do it again...
It doesn't have the charging animation. just a dead black screen.
Then why did you say this?:

That's more than a little misleading...
Will not boot...could mean many things.
From a easily fixed bootloop down to a brick.
Saying it was infinitely charging made it sound less severe.
if it weren't for that line, I wouldn't have bothered to tell you to use a jig.
JTAG it is
cris, why do you need to experiment with finding the proper resistance? Why should there be any variability in that circuit? Perhaps that is why some users have used up as many as six usb port replacement parts.
By the way, my 99% statistic is, like my entire post, just my opinion, and strictly a figure of speech. If it were a fact I was quoting I would have included a footnote. Remember those painful things? Do we have to include disclaimers for any figure we use? Sorry to mislead anyone!
I said "dead" because its not necessarily dead because a JTAG thing can fix it..and I said "charging" because to the normal person who didn't know anything was wrong with said device it would look like it was charging. But anyhow. I'm sending the phone out this week. I just don't understand why all the phones can't be as open as the devices straight from google.
You're phone is dead.
JTAG is akin to zombie, the phone needs disassembled and a special rig is needed to hook to the motherboard and flash EVERYTHING back to the nand at the prebootloader level.
The I717 is pretty much just as open as a nexus as far as easily modified and rooted...
No locked bootloader even which nexus have though it's a single line in a terminal to unlock, that step isn't needed on this device.
Only thing that isn't as open is the hardware drivers.
You may have flashed an incompatible kernel for a DIFFERENT device... and that on any phone will brick you.
And ranger not sure if it's the circuits within the phones that vary from device to device, ands seem to require a more specific voltage across those pins to trigger download mode
Or, if It's the resistors that are the variable. They are only rated within a certain +/- tolerance the cheaper ones having a larger margin of error.
And lol yes I am a ninja, but I didn't do anything special to my jig at all, I got mine from mobiletechvideos, funny enough it's worked on 4 captivates, a vibrant, 2 note 1s, and an s3, but didn't work on an s2 I was fixing.
the one I got from Goomanager was probably for the i700 which shouldn't even be able to happen.
They have video proof of them fixing phones with dead black screens from exactly what happened to mine using the JTAG Method. As far as I am concerned this thread can be closed cause I got the answer to my question.
the JTAG rewrites basically everything anyways so it is being sent out later this week. Till then I'll use a blackberry or something...Take care guys hopefully next time you see me post it will be to help someone and not asking for help
You'll be up and running by next weekend. By then, lots of exciting development will be happening on the released rom.
I doubt it, I live in Canada and have to send it to the states. It probably be closer to the weekend. Unless I expedite everything.
Hello all... After reading some threads I felt like I needed to start my own to clarify some things...
I have a friend who has a Galaxy SII (I9100) and she had some trouble with it...
SHe mentioned that her phone started acting erratic, freezing and saying that she didnt have enough memory (she only had 10 apps downloaded after a restore) and suddenly the phone restarted and a message saying that encription had failed. since I'm the one who fixes phones at work (from blackberry to iphone) she asked me if I could fix it.
The phone had pretty much like 80% batt left so I did what every mortal with a bit of knowledge would do... READ! I searched and the solution was to flash it with a newer firmware. I got the latest from SAMMOBILE and proceeded... For the record, the phone could get into recovery but recovery was messed up saying that a bunch of files were corrupt. I tried wiping and it showed an error message, so I proceeded to put it in download mode and set ODIN. Everything was going great... phone was detected,.. the process started.. Halfway through Odin FAILED... I restarted the phone and it didnt do anything... (crapping my pants started then...)
I started reading again (remembering the famous SDS on s3) and in different forums said that possibly some s2 came with the sds flaw and that that might have been my case. however, I always try to get more opions...
I tried using a USB JIG (which worked beautifully in other s2's that I have fixed) to no luck... With the battery in, the phone gets warm around the camera, but the usb jig doesnt do a thing...
So, I'm torn in two... My friend says that she thinks that the USB port was not working properly (she forgot to mention that at first) and sometimes it would appear af it nothing was connected and she had to jiggle the conector. I'm taking the phone to a service center tomorrow to check the port, but that is a pricey thing here in Venezuela... My second option is to sell it for spare parts...
Can I hear your opinions? Is it really hard bricked? Is it SDS?
I don't know which firmware it was running, and my friend doesnt know... my best guess is 2.3 since it's the one it came with and she never updated...

Is she hot?
It seems that she was on 4.0.4, so yeah, bricked because of the wipes.

ok... I assume it's bricked... but is it unbrickable?
Kinda...yeah; you'll need a mobo change.

Lol no, if it's because of the emmc brick bug then, maybe if you can still access recovery some repartition techniques might work but still don't get your hopes up, but if you have a faulty port then it will further worsen your situation.

It all points to brick bug, never wipe on 4.0.4 (nor back up/restore).
She can claim warranty, samsung is to blame for this bug
Sent from the little guy
Well.. warranty will not work... the phone is like 2 years old and in our country this doesnt work for impored phones... it was not bought from a carrier.
Huguito's legacy, try an usb jig.
You've got nothing to lose.

I have a USB jig which ha worked with another S2, S3, Note... but it is not working... I think I may have an issue with the USB connector... Any way, will try something tomorrow... and if it doesnt work, will sell it as spare... Thanks all for the comments...
Let me know how much would you like for it, was it made in Korea?

Hi
I recently bought a broken Galaxy S2 with a non-working display/screen off a swiss auction portal (smiliar to eBay) for very little money.
The seller stated that the display broke after he dropped it, the rest of the phone should be fine. Effectively, only the LCD is broken, the glass is intact, but the screen doesn't show anything when I try to turn on the phone.
The first few times I tried to turn on the phone, nothing happened, no boot sound or touch buttons glowing. After trying several combinations of pressing buttons (hard reset, soft reset, download mode, recovery etc.) I heard the boot sound and saw the buttons glowing, but only once and I dont know how I exactly managed it to start. But, nevertheless, I can't really see what the phone is doing, if it is booting, if its in download mode, etc.
Does anyone have an idea, what I can/should do to make sure, the phone itself is working and its only the display which is broken? I just don't want to spend over $100 for a new display, if im not sure if the rest works...any suggestions?
Thanks very much for your help guys!
Greetings from Switzerland!

How can anyone answer if the phone is going to be worth the cost of a new screen. It could be water damaged or blacklisted,or faulty.
Did you not foresee these things. What did you expect to happen. You must have trusted the seller, but all of a sudden you have doubts. Why didnt the seller replace the screen.
You probably think youve scored, when in fact it could work out more expensive than buying a working phone.

First of all, the mentioned auction platform is very small and not quite comparable to eBay, maybe it was my fault to make the comparison to eBay. Its much smaller, only people from Switzerland and people much trustworthier than on eBay. I talked to the seller even before I commited my bid on the phone, and he told me he already bought another one and the place, where he first wanted to repair it, told him, it would be more than $200, which wasnt an option for him...
The phone was very cheap, only about $25 - due to the fact that the sellar put it in a wrong category (mobile accessoires but not mobile devices itself) so almost nobody beside me bidded for the auction. There are several other Galaxy S2s with broken displays for sale, which sell at least for $50-70, rather between $100-150.
So to put it straight: I just bid for the phone because its cheap and, if the display is replaced and the phone is fully working again, the potential selling price is much higher than what I payed for the phone and the display together.
Now, I was just wondering, if there is a possibility to tell, if the phone boots normally and to be sure that the display is the only faulty part...
If you know what network it's on, and you can find a way to get it switched on, you can put a compatible sim card into it and call it....if the phone rings (provided the volume is set right) you can assume it's good.........
That is.....assuming there's charge in the battery.......

Ok I see now.
All you need to do then is to relist the phone on that auction site you said....in the proper area/listing....and you could make a profit without risk.
You could put it in dl mode and see if it is ready to take a flash.Or see if someone could hook up a screen to test,or see if you can borrow one/get sale or return.
And people on here help with tech problems, not get rich quick schemes......LOL

Actually I could have bought the phone and relisted it in the proper category, you are right on that BUT I acually don't have any interest in making money with this phone, if it is fully working again, I probably will give it to my GF cause her crappy iFone will probalby be moving to the bin soon... You really probably missunderstood me in this case...
But thanks for you help! I'll see this evening if I can put it in download mode...

Thats also a good idea BUT afaik you need to enter a PIN code before the phone actually connects to the carrier/provider, isn't that correct?
Not necessarily......unless the phone has been set up that way post purchase.....as I said, you need to know what carrier the phone was with before, and simply go and get a sim card (pay as you go) for that carrier and put it in the phone....job done.
It's not necessary to enter a pin code here in the UK.....I don't know how the mobile operators operare with respect to that in Switzerland though......

How about if you cant "borrow' a screen, just buy one off eBay from a seller that takes it back with a small restocking fee.
Then hook it up(without fixing it permanently) and see if any problems me/keith mentioned.

Okay, i managed to connect the phone to my computer and it shows up in KIES! *yay*
Unfortunately, KIES shows: "The connected device is locked..."
But, as far as this looks like, the phone is working! Am I right on this?
I dont know much about kies as I dont use it.Maybe its not an unbranded phone and youve put in a different sim its not used to.
Unless someone has a better idea,I think buying the screen under the conditions I said earlier is the way to go.It may only lose you £15 at the worst.
Check the online imei checket first though to see if it throws amything up.

I haven't put in a SIM at all, as it is not neccesary to be able to use the phone.
I will buy a screen anyway, if I can't use it myself, I will give it to a frend who has also got a smashed S2.
Another question: Is it possible to hard reset the phone, without a working screen? Afaik you have to boot into recovery and select the reset from a menu, which is not really possible without having a working display... Any suggestions?
Thanks!
Someone has just posted this utility.

Thanks, but with the phone being locked, i cannot do anything, also not install any apps...
How can I reset the phone without the screen? Or can someone tell me which buttons to press in recovery menu to do a wipe/reset?
Thanks!
That in itself could cause you issues. You have to get the number of and order of presses exactly right otherwise you could end up formatting the system partition (os)
Aaaaand.....you don't know whether you're running 4.0.4 in which case, doing a wipe *may* permanently kill your phone (search emmc brickbug for the why/how)......
Realistically the only option is to obtain a screen......have you thought of taking the phone to an unofficial repairer, explaining the situation and asking for the temporary instore use of a screen? (You could even offer to pay a small fee.....just as a sweetener)

You are right - thats really too risky. As I said, i'm going to order a screen now and we'll see how things work out! Thanks for your help! I'll keep this thread updated with my progess.
Cheers! :good:

Thanks for your support! :good:
PS: Any recommendable, FAST rom without too much bloatware?
Cheerio!
Lol....not gonna recommend a specific ROM as that's against XDAs rules......but if you want the stability of stock without the bloat, try one of the hybrid ROMs. Look for "samsung based" in the ROM sticky thread.....or do what I've done. ....stay with your stock firmware, but root it and debloat it.......
My Wife says I'm a phone geek.....
I'd have to agree.....
