Problem installing drivers on device (mskips toolkit) - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I'm brand new to the android world (AT&T i747) and am getting ready to root my S3 with mskip's toolkit but I'm having a little bit of a problem. My work computer is running windows xp. I've downloaded the tookit, i've ran and installed the drivers but when I plug my phone in, the computer recognizes it but then get this message:
"There was a problem installing this hardware: Samsung Mobile MTP Device. An Error occurred during the installation of the device. The required section was not found in the INF."
I saw the note where to uninstall Kies. I uninstalled the updates but is there a way to uninstall it all together or did I do it right?
I've rebooted PC. I've rebooted phone.
TIA

You're in the wrong forum and probably as a consequence used the wrong tool.
This is for i9300 not i747

[Q] samsung fascinate driver install problems!!! hELP!!!

i need help, i have tried everywhere and can't find anything and any help would be greatly appreciated
i'm on the road to root my samsung galaxy fascinate and have ran into a laundry list of problems. i have rooted many android phones coming from eclair, froyo, and gingerbread, but seem to be stuck at the slightest of problems when it comes to the fascinate.
i can not install the drivers to the fascinate. i have searched through the web for all the drivers and have tried every possible galaxy driver. the driver simply won't install on my windows 7 prof 64bit machine. i have never ran into this problem before with any other phone. every time i try to install the driver it gets to the very end of the install then pops up with the message "windows was unable to install the driver"
It also gave me the option to view the failed windows installation log, which after many successful steps, at the end the log shows this error:
Action ended 1:26:53: ShowMsiLog. Return value 0.
=== Logging stopped: 12/16/2011 1:26:53 ===
MSI (c) (0C:08) [01:26:53:750]: Product: SAMSUNG USB Driver for Mobile Phones -- Installation operation failed.

i have also attached the entire log
the first thing i did was plug in the phone, which windows sensed this and automatically installed a driver, not sure which. after this i unplugged the phone and then checked "usb debugging" for rooting purposes and plugged the phone back into the computer which windows then installed another driver automatically, then following the steps from xda to root the phone, i downloaded the given drivers which is where the problem first occurred and the drivers were unable to download.
I'm simply trying to get root access to the phone and can't do anything with the phone with crappy drivers...i can't even mount usb sd card now to transfer data anymore. the drivers have completely been shot. i desperately need help. please
also what is the absolute easiest way to root the fascinate? is it with one click root or with Odin? Because the fascinate just updated itself from 2.2.2 EH05 to 2.3.5 EH03 and i'm not sure which program supports rooting which version of android. also all other android devices simply give root access to the stock rom, which is great cause i get to keep all my apps, messages, contacts...etc, then simply titanium backup everything and transfer it over to the new rom. is it different with the fascinate? will rooting the device simply flash a completely new rooted rom? therefore loosing everything? if anybody has any answers to any of these questions, please be my hero. thanks
Uninstall everything you previously installed in the way of Samsung drivers (in fact, you could use Windows 7 backup and restore to restore your PC to the state it was in the day before you installed the drivers as they are sometimes hard to uninstall completely). Reboot and simply plug your phone (with USB debugging of course), and let Windows automatically install the drivers for you like it did before you installed the ones linked to on XDA. This time, if your PC recognizes your phone, just keep the drivers you have and don't install the ones linked to. Those drivers from the guide are for those whose PC doesn't automatically install working drivers. From that point, just follow the rest of the guide and skip the install drivers part. You will not have to install any further drivers unless you flash an AOSP ROM, in which case you'll have to follow the instructions in the OP of the ROM thread. I hope this works for you.
Has anyone seen John Connor?
awesome thank you, i will try this out, and if this doesnt work i can always try another pc.
and as to the question of rooting the fascinate, like i said before i've never had a phone that has been wiped when i got root access initially, but it seems that everyone is saying that a rooted rom must be flashed from Odin in order to have root access. In other builds it seem that all is done is busybox and superuser are just pushed to the phone. will the fascinate be wiped when initial root is acquired?

root is not flashed via odin, rather cwm is...then the root file su_2.6.3.1 is flashed via cwm. If you need directions section 5 of my guide in general section has it covered...everything needed is there including the correct recovery and root file.
I will tell you what...the Fascinate is probably the biggest pain in the ass phone...I tried forever to root my friends and couldn't get it done...need to try again I guess, but it was a driver issue as well..ODIN just wouldn't recognize the dam phone
Use Droidstyles guide. Very easy to follow. Also, the USB cable for some reason seams to be a bit finicky at times with this device. Unplug from phone and replug. Sounds odd but trust me, I have done this many times.

I am having a problem too and it's not covered anywhere i've seen to date. I've got an XP and a Win7 box at home. On both, I've tried with no drivers and i've tried with every other driver set I can find and every time I hook the phone up to the machine it pops up saying USB device couldn't be recognized or something. I'm going nuts! I've never had so much difficulty in my life, not even the first time changing ROMs on anything.
Droidstyle- I've seen your guide and unless I missed it doesn't cover this. Have you seen or heard of this and have any ideas at all?
Thanks!

[Q] Unable to root due to USB problem

Hi there,
I've been trying to root my Galaxy S3 (using CF-root by Chainfire) but Odin doesn't seem to recognize my phone??? I followed the instructions from Chainfire's thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1695238) to the letter but when I get to the part where I hit start in Odin it just says zero failed & zero succeded.
Used SAMSUNG GALAXY S3 TOOLKIT v2.0 by mskip (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1703488) to install the latest Samsung USB driver (1.5.5.0) but when I run the program after this it shows no serial number of my phone (which it should do).
Tried all possible things I could think of. With and without Kies installed, USB-debugging checked and unchecked, different USB ports, nothing seems to make any difference. When I connect my phone to the PC it says 'problem with the installation of this hardware, CDC Abstract Control Model (ACM)'. Also I never see the safely remove hardware icon in the system tray.
Hope someone out there has a solution for my problem :fingers-crossed: Have this beautiful phone for almost a week now and it's still not rooted. I mean ... that's just wrong

Is your phone in Download mode (big yellow triangle on black background) and have all the drivers been successfully installed?
If yes, try manually forcing the correct driver, go to Device Manager and select Upgrade driver on the corresponding device.
Thanks for your reply but I'm afraid this won't help. Yes, my phone was in download mode (followed the instructions to the letter, remember) and yes, the drivers installed succesfully.
I also already tried forcing the driver in the taskmanager. When trying to update the driver for CDC Abstract Control Model (ACM) I just get the same message as mentioned earlier, 'problem with the installation of this hardware'. When I update the GT-I9300 driver it says update completed and I get a little mobile phone in the system tray. When I click this it opens a window saying "Portable Device - windows can perform the same action everytime you connect this device. What would you like windows to do?" Unfortunately the actions to choose from are completly blank...

Hardware ID Missing

All of a sudden my Galaxy S2 has started giving me the Error: Hardware ID Missing every time I plug it into my PC
It worked perfectly fine until today.
I have rebooted my PC
I have fully removed and reinstalled Kies
I have restarted the Phone (including removing the battery)
I have factory reset the phone
It does not pick up in Kies either
Phone otherwise works perfectly fine
We have 4 Samsung devices here:
My SGS2
My Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 Wifi P5110
My Wifes Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 3G P5100
My Sons Galaxy Pocket
All pick up fine including in Kies except for my SGS2
Hi, got same problem after updated to new firmware. Kies only detected ext memory but not internal memory. Everything was fine before updated.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
ok flashed the firmware back to the current none rooted firmware for my supplier and that has not changed a thing either.
I seem to recall that kies updated itself this morning so it could be a glitch in that.

im guessing you have a windows pc?
samsung put out a driver update for the computer that caused the error.
only way i found to fix the problem is to do a system restore back a few days before the update.
my update was automatic, im going to see if i can stop that update from happening for now..
ic you can call samsung and make them aware like i did...
You can as well forget about kies altogether and your problem is all gone.
BTW I hate that terrible app called kies

For now i'll leave kies off until they fix it.

It's the fault of outdated Windows Update drivers for our phones.
Correct way of installing drivers if above error is present:
1. Disconnect phone from PC.
2. Uninstall Kies and drivers.
3. Download fresh copy of Kies from Samsung website.
4. Turn off Internet connection on PC <- important! This will force OS to look for drivers on PC first instead of Windows Update.
5. Install Kies, run it.
6. Connect phone to PC and wait for drivers installation.
7. Turn on Internet connection.
8. Done.

Can you be a little more specific in your instructions? The way you've ordered and worded the steps is really vague and does't make much sense, especially since the PC must be connected to the internet to install Kies. I'm also confused as to whether I'm supposed to uninstall the Kies on my phone as well, or leave it be.
EDIT: Retried the installer and everything worked perfectly, just make sure the internet is down before you plug in your device.
If you still have trouble with "Hardware ID Missing" I suggest the following:
1.Install the latest version of Kies.
2.Uninstall only the "SAMSUNG USB Driver for Mobile Phones".
3.Install the slightly older "SAMSUNG USB Driver for Mobile Phones.exe" version 1.5.6.0 from the from the following link:

Thanks a lot for the solution that was really hard to find. Worked for My Samsung Galaxy Note just in time for the new firmware update
Mine worked for a couple days and now is back again.

Just go into device manager plug the phone in and you should see Samsung drivers appear in usb section just uninstall them restart pc and fixed (you might have to connect your phone a couple of times to re install the right driver after reboot)

Are you running Kies along with the Samsung driver suite? Because they don't necessarily play nice together.

[Request] Samsung Galaxy Note 2 Verizon Drivers.

I looked at the " How to root " forum and followed the links there for the alternate drivers for the phone. But the links are all bad now and cannot be downloaded.
Im having issues with Kies Air / Kies with the device and im getting the " Hardware Id Missing" " Windows cannot identify the device plugged into the SAMSUNG Mobile USB Composite Device".
Well i uninstalled all drivers and software. And now my phone will not communicate with the PC. Only wifi thru Kies Air.
I was once able to send text/check text at the convenience of my PC. But now i cannot.
Please help.
links work for me...just downloaded it again.

Bit of a problem with rooting

Hi all. So I just picked up a Verizon Note 2 today and happily looked forward to rooting it. I'm on 4.1.2 Jellybean VRAMC3, model number SCH-I605. I'm afraid I may have messed something up.
I had downloaded Odin and installed the Samsung USB drivers and all that good stuff. Odin picked up the phone and all that, but a bit more looking around seemed to indicate that the usual Odin method of rooting wouldn't work on the latest version that I had.
So I downloaded the CASUAL installer and got that to run. It ran through the install, rebooted the phone, and then said it was waiting for Windows to recognize the device again so that it could continue with the install.
At that point, Windows informed me that a driver install had failed and the CASUAL install did not proceed any further, despite waiting a good 5-10 minutes.
Since doing this, the phone has had bizarre USB connection issues. Odin and Kies do not read the phone at all. Plugging the phone in brings up an additional drive for about two minutes with a Verizon Assistant Manager EXE, a USB Drivers EXE, and a couple other things, then it disappears.
The phone will often display a message informing me "Unable to find software on your PC that can recognize your device." This happens regardless of being in USB Debugging mode or not.
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling several versions of Samsung's drivers as well as Kies. I also tried a factory reset on the phone itself, but these connectivity issues (and accompanying warning messages) persist.
Not sure how to proceed from here and would love a bit of help. Thanks!
Additional notes: All normal functions of the phone are working fine, and the computer DOES detect the phone as a "Samsung Android Device", but as stated Odin and Kies are not able to detect/connect with it.
Update: Messed with drivers a bit more and Odin will now pick up the phone again. When the phone disappears as a "drive" with install helper stuff, it reappears as a portable device, and I can browse the innards of the phone to put music and other stuff on it. CASUAL however still does not pick up the phone.
