My trackball is constantly going left and it has made text messaging impossible. It's slowing down games, making my launcher lag, and is basically ruining the phone for me. I have root and unplugging the phone occasionally helps but it's murder to have to unplug your phone to play a game, which drains battery.
Please, is there any way to just disable the trackball altogether?
lol..take it to verizon!!
I don't want to get a non-rootable phone from them...
just hold out untill the dorid x comes out and then see if they can upgrade you to that for just the 2 year contract price...
or just bring it in and if they give you a non-rootable phone then just say that it wasn't working either.

I never found a fix for this. I took my phone back to Verizon and luckily they still had 2 Eris' with 1.5. You could get lucky like me, but if you'd rather not try have you tried cleaning the trackball with a q tip and alcoholl?

That would void the warranty? Then I'd have no chance of returning.
I might stop off at Verizon store and ask if there's anyway I can get an upgrade for just the price of a contract...
I imagine you should be able to disable the trackball by unmapping it. I took a quick look through the keyboard file and didn't see anything, but I'll have to take another look tomorrow when I'm more awake.
I'm fairly sure I've read a topic on here about changing out the trackball (which are cheap from Ebay or something like that). Had a step by step, with pictures, detailed guide laid out.
Did a quick search and viola, here ya go-

doesnt fix the trackball. the sensors are on the motherboard, this only replaces the ball and the small plastic housing it's in.
the trackball going to one direction or another is a common in the eris (arguably why HTC has since switched to using optical pads). so far, only way to fix is to take it to verizon and get a replacement. there is finally a root for 1.49 (in most cases) so you should be good with any phone you get from them.
I guess I'll just have to replace it, oh well. I'll hold off for a while.
So I plugged my Vibrant into Odin to revert to stock. Apparently everything went wrong, and now my phone is stuck at the Phone---!---computer screen. It seems that my phone won't respond to hardware methods of entering download mode, so am I screwed?
Keep reading on here. This has happened to many people. Keep trying things and hopefully you will get it.
1. Remove SD and SIM card
2. Remove battery
3. plugged the phone into USB (connected to PC)
4. held down vol-up and vol-down
5. popped the battery back in while holding vol buttons
I've tried that, and many other methods, multiple times already. It seems that none of the volume/power methods do anything for my phone. I'm certain that if hardware-locks do exist for certain vibrants, mine just so happens to be one of them (Date on box is August 13). I just want to know if anyone with a similarly dated phone has ever been able to access download mode without adb.
If anyone knows of more methods, please post them. If all else fails, I'll go complain in my local T-Mobile store that my phone died. I have no idea if that'll get me anywhere, but it's worth a shot.
Does anyone who has had a problem similar to mine know of any fix? By that I mean, has someone who has had a presumably hardware-locked phone ever been able to boot it into download mode without adb? I'd really like to know if I can salvage this thing, or if I have to try my luck with T-Mobile.
Try holding volume down and holding power button and plug in USB while this is happening.
Sadly, I've tried that method as well, thank you though for responding. I will continue trying since it seems not to be a 100% thing for some people. Anyway, for the Volume keys + Power method, can anyone provide a more precise time of releasing power than "When it goes black". I'm hoping my inability to enter download mode is human-error, so I'd like as much input on this as possible. Thanks in advance.

When you see the " !---> (pc)" symbol, plug your USB in. Hold down volume +, volume -, and power. As soon as the screen turns black release the power button only. Continue holding Vol + and Vol -. You'll enter Download mode.
I've tried that multiple times, but I will continue to try it. It seems as though my phone won't register that buttons are being pressed. All that happens is the phone reboots to the Phone--!--Computer screen every time the power is held and released (As it should). No combination of buttons seems to have any affect on this. Oh well, I'll continue trying and hopefully someone will post a working method.
I have the same problem and the hardware button method isn't working and I am stuck at the Phone ! Computer screen, and I read around the forums and they say that some Vibrant's have the hardware method locked, so you can't boot into Download mode from using the buttons. Since adb cannot find the phone when its stuck at this screen it seems we are both screwed. I have found no other solution other than returning it Tmo, not sure if they will exchange since it might be a violation of warranty.
I'm just going to play dumb when I go to T-Mobile. I'll say it just booted into that screen, and I can't get out of it. The hardware lock appears to be a defect, since it's not present on most Vibrants, so that should be able to warrant the replacement phone. I've been with T-Mobile awhile, and they're usually pretty good with replacements. Besides, the phone would be easily fixed if it wasn't broken in the first place.
But before I go to T-Mobile, I'm going to try and talk to Customer Service. If it's a common problem, then I'm sure it can be covered under warranty (Even though MOST ways of getting it require voiding warranty). Again, on the basis that this wouldn't be a big deal if my phone worked like a normal Vibrant. Besides, I'm sure T-Mobile can flash it without requiring the hardware method, so even if they only charge me some sort of service fee, I won't really mind.
As final moral reassurance for myself, I only tried to flash it because apps started FC on me and the phone constantly acted weird. The only thing I've done is root it, so it's not like I really set it up to fail.
Let me know how it goes with Customer Service. I would to get this problem resolved as well with the least amount of trouble. I don't want to have a brick and have to pay like $500 for a new phone. And I think the hardware buttons thing might actually be a defect. I tried doing the hardware buttons thing to get to recovery mode once before and it worked. I did this to install an update.zip to root the phone. It only worked that one time and now the buttons don't boot into recovery mode or download mode. It if works once then not again, there has to be something wrong.
I'll be trying them tomorrow (It's 10PM where I am). If all goes well, I'll try and contact you. I'm pretty sure I'll be safe so long as I don't mention rooting it. The firmware flash they'll have to do should help me on that front, so unless they catch on, I should be safe. Anyway, hopefully tomorrow I'll be good news, otherwise expect some post from me on Monday or Tuesday, depending on whether I have the time to deal with them or not.
Hey Generic112, I got with T-Mobile customer service. I told them about the screen I was seeing but did not mention rooting or attempting to flash the phone. They said they will replace my phone by shipping me a new Vibrant, but I have to return the one I have. I am not sure if they will do a check to verify if the Vibrant was rooted or not after they receive it, but I will have my new Vibrant before they receive the one I have. I won't know what will happen for awhile because its going to take a week for the new phone to arrive and when it does then I will be returning the one with the phone ! computer problem, unless someone thinks it is a better idea to tell them what happened and have them repair it?
I am also struck with the same problem
Hi,
I am also struck with the same problem. Please let me know if you guys got any method to resolve the problem or T-Mobile was able to help.

This method actually worked for me. I was beginning to think I'd have to build the USB jig, but tried this as a last ditch. Thanks!
The above method has worked for me numerous times with the same problem, my old bricked one, and my new one. Try holding down power button as well once or twice, never know. You have to keep the volume buttons pressed the whole time for it to work.

In some cases that I've read they say, TMo charged them 600$ for the Replacement after finding out that it was bricked due to hacking. Before replacing try to get it repaired by them.
I would also like people whose phones were replaced to confirm what I've said above.

He should be able to get the phone woking again, what happened is not a big deal. If he sends it in the way it's sitting right now, t'Mo's techs won't have a problem getting it working again. (IMO) Especially if they find out the phone's rooted, I wouldn't be surprised if he gets charged.
I bricked my phone so bad, it was beyond recovery. I erased the bootloader, therefore it was completelly dead. No life. I got a replacement under warranty for free, never got charged for it.
My advice would be to try and get to work again before sending it in.
i dont know what to do, is there any way to get a new phone. The trackball issue has shown up on my phone and it has made it impossible to text and other things because my phone auto scrolls by its self now and i cant scroll down. But the problem is i know im past the 12 month warrenty and i am not due for a upgrade yet, so is there any way around this?
unless you bought extra warranty then im sorry but you are out of luck :/
your best bet would be to buy another eris off ebay or swappa if your trackball problem keeps occurring
however.. do try cleaning the trackball first if that remedies it a little
I had this problem occur to me as well but only when it was plugged in and my trackball problem only occurred when i was using HTC Sense stock. When using a ROM my trackball problem didn't happen so often so maybe you can try that
You can get an Eris from Cowboom.com and add on a 1 year replacement plan for $5 or so.
It won't hurt to call Verizon to see if they will let you upgrade your contract now. It used to be that they would allow it after 13 months for some contracts, and they famously changed that a couple of months ago, but those policies are supposed to go into effect after your next contract change. Try calling to see if they will let you upgrade.
If not, then I guess buy a used phone.

WARNING: Do not hold it against me if this causes your trackball to stop working at all, or to stop working partially, or any other harm to your phone.
Try this.
Press the trackball HARD (don't try to push it all the way through the back of the case, though), and while pressing so hard, roll it around in all directions. Do this for at least 15 seconds, although you can try longer if you want or need to.
See if it'll behave for a while.
Note also that scary alien makes a version of the Eris recovery (you didn't say if you're rooted or not) that doesn't require the trackball. Luckily for me, doogald just posted the link to help someone else in another thread: http://androidforums.com/eris-all-t...2-custom-recovery-trackball-not-required.html
Yeah I am rooted and I have been using his alternative recovery that don't need track ball so It don't matter if I can't scroll down . The iissue is the random scroll makes impossible to text run maps and alot of other things, im just going to upgrade to the thunderbolt I was just wanting to get a warranty so I can hold out and wait for the bionic or the incredible 2
So I looked today at the LEDs beside my camera and noticed that the top half was slightly pushed in. Being the idiot I am I pushed on it and now the whole two LEDS are slightly recessed in the phone. It hasn't had any effect on picture quality or anything. I'm just curious if anyone else has had this happen to them. Should I send it off to get fixed?
Sidenote and Secind Question: If I do go ahead and get it shipped off, what is the best way to get the ROM and Root off my phone and get it to out-of-the-box condition? Thank you all very much, much love and appreciation!
Droid X2 w/ CM7 and lovin' it
If you need to send it back you will need to sbf it. Not hard there is great tutorials in the general section.
Here you go:

Thank you very much!
No problem. It is a little scary the first time but after that you will see his easy it is. Besides you will need to know how if you ever go ahead like 2.3.5 eclipse 2.04. On the way back you must sdf first to change your kernal back.
Just curious, but was this a replacement alternative, or a replacement?
Over the years I've had several replacements with button, screen, and mangled physical components...it could be from that. Don't beat yourself up, just SBF back and you'll be fine...when you talk to VZW just say the camera/flash isn't working and you have rest the phone several times to try to fix it...
Good luck

In the back of my mind I'm hoping they will let me exchange it for another phone with equal value, but I know more than likely they'll replace it with another X2.

If this is your first x2 they probably won't. Usually after three replacements they will offer you warranty replacement alternative...which is equal or lesser value...sometimes they might make you pay for battery and the back cover of the alternative...which is around $40/$50....but you get another choice

For what it's worth, I've sent a few phones with custom roms flashed on them into SquareTrade for repair of physical defects and never had an issue. The only time it came up was when my significant other forgot her screen lock pattern. This was the first device we ever sent in and it didn't occur to me to remove the screen lock beforehand. Anyway, since she couldn't remember the pattern, the customer service rep said that they usually perform a factory reset when that occurs so they can test the phone and make sure it works after repairs, but since the device had a custom rom they couldn't/didn't want to do that.

And to do this, we plug our phone into wall charger, hit power and volume down buttons until we see FASTBOOT, then we use volume down to scroll to ANDROID Recovery, then we hit volume UP, at that point it will say entering Android recovery....we hit both VOLUME UP & VOLUME DOWN TWICE to enter recovery. While there wipe data and cache...NOTE you will lose all info un less you have backed up. When it completes select the reboot text by pressing power button, then you have factory restored....the stock recovery way
SMILE It's Not Illegal Yet
There's no need to plug the phone in to a wall charger to boot to Android recovery. Only needed for booting to bootstrap recovery.
Hi,
I searched this topic and got a couple of hits but I have a couple of specific questions about this.
My phone is rooted and S-OFF (and everthing else it says in my sig) I been having problems for quite some time now and I'm so fed up with this phone (and losing faith in HTC just because of it) that I even considered melting it with my oxiacetilene torch.
So before having another one of those episodes I think I'd like to try to send it to HTC to see if they can repair it.
I bought it from Negri Electronics and I'm using it in central america so I don't think I have any waranty cover.
My question is do I need to revert it to stock before I send it or they would look at it if I send it as is now?
Is there any type of warranty for me?
What should I do? (Just in case, my phone suffers of a severe black screen issue that it does not go away even with stock RUU)
Sometimes I need to press the power button like 20 times to get the screen on ( this is the thread on my problem) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2067514&highlight=black+screen
I'm pretty sure it has to be HW related because it used to work ok but one day started acting out (got corrupted after a complete battery drain) and since that day it never worked well again. I tried different roms and none of them make it go away not even in stock ruu.
Thanks for any info
Jose (the developer of some of the aokp and cm roms) has added a flash able for allowing the camera button to wake the screen.. Try that first.. Read up..
Also tmobile ics wakes on camera press
Sig:
What do you mean I can't say that??!!.. It's the fkin Internet!
Thanks, the NRG rom does that too but I get the same result just capacitive lights coming on (and only half of them the other half have gone bad)
I think I'll revert to stock and give them a call to see what they say and if they can give me a quote for the repair.
Finally today my screen died completely.
The phone works but the screen is dead, I sent an email to HTC we'll see if they can quote me for the repair and if it's worth the trouble.
The only problem is that my phone is S-Off and unlocked so I don't know if they will repair it.:fingers-crossed:
After talking with CS they told me that changing the screen would cost $145 but if they need to change the whole MB it would go up to $340 so I just decided not to do it and risk buying one in fleabay, we'll see how this one works out.

but anyway to answer your question I put that in my signature sometime ago (even before they started calling it HTC ONE when it was just a rumor of a phone), at that time I thought my problem was software related and not the screen agonizing, and anyway it seems like HTC seems to be the lesser of two evils.
I've had HTC phones for the last 6 years or so and I don't know where to go, I keep reading about Samsungs and the new experias but I always come back to what I know.
That's the reason I got this second cheap Amaze to hopefully last me another year and by then have a more clear view of how things moved with HTC and the market in general before I puke another $800+ in a phone.
I was waiting for the S4 anouncement but I'm not impressed with the specs, lots of nice gadgets but they are not good for what I'm looking in a phone.
Sony Experia... I know nothing of Sony phones, I'm reading as much as I can to learn about them, development availability and other factors
WOOHOO!!!!! I'm back online!!!!!
After the death of my Amaze I bought another one on the bay (cheaper than sending mine to HTC to get it repaired) and I just got it.
After going through the whole unlocking/rooting s-off, and other tweaks Ifinally got a phone again.
I was getting sick of the Moto razr V3 I was using.
