Now that things are perfect and stock, how do I back this all up?
Stock recovery does not have backup function. I also can not use
Titanium, since I am not rooted (YET). I want to make a nandroid type
backup so that after I re-root, next time there is an OTA update, I can just
restore back to where it is now, accept the OTA, then re-root again.
I NEED this stock state saved somehow like a nandroid, but I can't
nandroid backup until I install root/clockwork. How can I back up my total
system state now? And when I do re-root, what version of clockwork mod/root
do I use so that ALL my backups work and are compatible, so I don't run into
this nightmare again. Thanks for all your help.

Ok, so immediately after rooting I created a nandroid backup. So, if I flash a rom (or anything else for that matter) and something goes wrong, I can restore my "stock" backup. im new to odin and curious to why I'd have to use it to flash the vibrant stock rom if I already have my nandroid stock backup? From what I gather, if I change the kernal, using odin will restore it back to stock, and nandroid will only restore system and data, but not change back the kernal. Is this correct or am I missing something vital that I don't know about odin. Sorry if this sounds confusing. Any help is greatly appreciated.

You are correct. As long as you don't need to restore a kernel you can use nandroid to restore to stock. And if you ever use your nandroid backup there is a stock nandroid backup posted in the development forum. I don't like using odin unless I absolutely have to (such as in a situation where I can't get into clockwork recovery or something)

2. Where are the backups saved and is there any chance of them being overwritten by flashing a rom?
No difference
In the clockwork folder, internal memory.
You will not lose this because the rom's do not wipe internal, just data (apps)
I need a bit of clarification. What exactly is a nandroid...if i assume that it is a complete back up of all data and apps, would i be correct? As you can see im a bit confused. I read this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=734475&page=2 (just in case i wanted to revert back to a stock rom for what ever reason) is the nandroid used once you flash back to stock using odin to get everything back to stock or can you us the nandroid to get back to stock?

I'm running stock Vibrant 2.2 from mini Kies. I have rooted and installed Titanium.
What I want to do is do a backup with Titanium, reset to stock 2.2 for some GPS testing, and then restore to my current state.
How do I do the reset?
Also I'm unclear on the restore. Will I have to root it again before I restore?

Well first id make sure you have the 3e recovery set up, if you do then install the app Rom Manger off the market. flash the clockwork recovery from the app. then you can do a Nandroid back up. With this back up you can then restore to the moment the back up was made when your ready to. If you reset to full stop and remove root and all that stuff, you will need to add the root and 3e recovery again before your able to do the restore.

As for the reseting to stock, you have 2 choices i can think of. You can either odin back to 2.1 then upgrade to 2.2 again, or you can use a one click root prgm to unroot your phone, then do a factory reset to it. i normally always do the the odin to have a fresh start when i want to make sure everything is in working order but thats me.

The main thing to remember is to always read and reread the instructions on what your going to be doing to make sure you understand it fully.

What I meant by restore to stock 2.2 is put the phone back into the state it would be in if I took a phone straight from the factory and did a mini Kies to 2.2. Presumably that means deleting all apps I added and putting all settings back to the defaults. I would hope I would not have to reload the rom, since as you say I am running the stock 2.2 rom.
In this 'stock' state I can run some tests, and if necessary send it in for service.
However, I want to be able to quickly restore to the apps and setting as they are now.

Thanks for the detailed info. It may come to that, but couldn't I get the effect I described above with a Titanium backup?

Well with Titanium backup you can back up your apps, but thats all it saves, if you have like a lot of settings changed on your phone or ringtones set for people and stuff it doesn't help with those. But a Nandroid is a full backup of your phone down to settings phones ringtones etc. Normally i use Titanium backup when i'm going from ROM to ROM to quickly reinstall my apps, but if your doing a rest and don't want to go about re setting everything then a Nandroid is th way to go. Hopefully that clarify why i recommended it.

On the S2 I pretty much always used CM9 and jumped back and forth between versions and backing up/ restoring was never an issue.
Now however I am using the stock ROM and its rooted of course.
I made a back up of my stock rom 'cause I wanted to try and install some stuff.
I tried installing the jelly bean transition effects but the install failed, the device felt kinda sluggish (maybe my imagination) afterwards so I decided to restore my phone. The restoring went good but the last ting that happens is that CWM says that restoring /Data failed.
I reboot my phone and I come to the first start up screen where I get to choose language and so on. Everything but photos has been deleted. I try to install CM9, and I do that without any issues. Then I trie to backup my stock backup but I get the same error message and I get back to stock setup page.
My backup is a staggering 6GB, and I read somewhere that CWM can only restore 2GB?
I've deleted that backup and done another one but that is also 6GB.
Does anyone know how to restore from that first restore or how to make future restores work?

I had this problem with my sisters Xperia X8,couldn't restore anything that i backed up.It goes for a while and stops.But she had bootloader locked.I was shore that i unlocked her bootloader but i didn't,so i unlocked bootloader,and tried to backup and restore and it worked fine.
I'm not 100% and i don't know is that the way CWM works,but i think in order to restore your data,that you backed up,you have to unlock your bootloader.But it's the best to wait someone who knows this for 100% sure.
If you haven't unlocked bootloader try that,or you don't won't to lose your warranty!?

I don't think that CWM has size limitation but i can be wrong.
Have you made sure that your CWM is up-to-date? if in doubt flash the latest CF-root.
was there ever a resolution to this problem? I did the same thing, rooted the galaxy s 3 and unlock the bootloader. Get a backup of my stock set up using clockwork recovery mod. Now when I try to restore, it does not restore the data. All of my apps look like they are there, but none of them are really installed. I think I can just reinstall all of the apps by hand, I would like to know how to get over this.
I tried removing some bloatware, nothing as major as the Coolboy script but some of the Samsung and Sprint crap. I made a backup before hand. Afterwards things were acting a little wonky so I figured I'll just restore my back up but it failed in TWRP. I'm rooted on stock 4.3, any suggestions?
It might be the version of twrp you are using had this issue with a build on the s4, i would try to download a older version and flash it and see if it will restore it. Might not you might be stuck then you'll have to backup with titanium then reflash your rom and restore with titanium. In future my advice would be to also backup everything thru titanium then remove what you want and if need be you can restore the apps you removed thru titanium.
