Hello All! First off, this is my first post on this forum, and I must say, that I am glad to be a part of a "community" that is passionate about mobile technology!
Question: I currently use an iPhone 3Gs on AT&T. I have the unlimited data and text message plan. If I decide to purchase an unlocked GS2, will my 3G sim card out of my iphone work in the GS2? Also, will I be able to keep my unlimited data and text plan?
Thanks in advance!
As far as I know, and from my experience. Yes.
I am also on that plan, and it works great for me in NYC. HSPA+ 95 percent of the time.
yes, because technically, youre not cancelling the original plan.
Thanks for the reply everyone! So just to clarify, my regular iPhone 3G sim will fit and work on the GS2? Will I only be able to receive 3G connectivity since I don't have a 4G sim or data plan?
Yes it will fit but not sure about the other question.

Anyone know if I will only be able to receive 3G connectivity since I do not have a 4G sim card? Also, will I have to call in to AT&T customer service to have them activate the GS2?

You will receive 4g speeds ( actually hsdpa + which att calls 4g)
U dont need to activate ur phone in att to get it to work with data or phone
To activate the 4g network for ur phone u will need an imei from atrix or other ATT 4g plan.
The imei of SGS 2 wont show up in ATT network as a 4g phone as they do not have that data base.
There is big thread here on how to thistopic - The pages 8-11 , I think are more fruitful

Thanks for the info drgopoo! How do I go about obtaining a valid 4G IMEI from such devices?

i used my wife's atrix. Some people had luck by going to the att store and getting one from one of the reps
Even though I love the GS2, having to locate a "4G IMEI" to get the phone to work on AT&T sounds like too much work!
Hate to say it, but I think I may end up waiting for the AT&T variant (ATTAIN) to come out this year. Sucks there isn't a release date in sight as of yet!

The phone WILL WORK on AT&T no matter what. You will get H+ service no matter what. However if you are switching SIM from a 3G phone, most likely your H+ speed will be capped at like 6 Mbps. To unlock at&t backhaul that is not capped, you OPTIONALLY may want to call in an ask them to change your existing plan to the plan they have for AT&T certified 4G devices like the Infuse. In order to do that, AT&T needs a random IMEI number from such a device. You can give them ANY number. Just stop buy AT&T store, take a look at a display Infuse, go to menus to see the IMEI and take a picture of that screen, then give that number to AT&T rep.
This is just how their plan changing software works, it needs a capable IMEI to put you on the "4G" network.
Just to reiterate , by default imported SGS2 will work on 3g and 4g on AT&T, 4G "may-be" capped though at 6 or so Mbps. I personally do not give two ****s about this capping because only on a rare day I can get more than 3 Mbps in my market (New York) where AT&T sucks tremendously. So I did not bother to call in and upgrade.
Note though, that you do NOT want to call in and upgrade if you are on a dumbphone plan.
Why would you not go back to Media Net plan? It costs 10 bucks with messaging plan, its unlimited and you get H+ speed.

Thanks for the info.
I am currently using my Unlimited Data plan of my iPhone 4 on my SGS2.
I bought this simtray that can hold the micro sim so it fits in the SGS2.
The speeds I get are on the so called 4G network H+ but I am not that impressed for now.
Right now the Upload speed I get is 2.2Mbps Down / 0.79Mbps Up and 138ms Ping. I believe this could be better.
I guess I will try to get the IMEI changed with an Atrix as mentioned.
*Update*
So I just talked with ATT over chat when I logged on to their website.
I lied to them and told them I had an ATT ATRIX 4G and needed the right speed.
They asked me for the IMEI, so I searched for an ATT ATRIX 4G IMEI on Google , they changed it on my account and now I have unlimited HSPA dataplan.
I did some tests with the APN both give more or less the same results but the area I am currently at is not that great for H+ but I did see improvement in the upload speed.
Right now I have 2.39Mbps Down / 1.03Mbps Up and 142ms ping.
Will try it out tonight when I am more close to H+ areas but my iPhone SIM just works fine in my SGS2

I currently have the unlimited data plan on my iPhone 3Gs. I do not want to lose it downgrading myself to the cappeed bandwidth plan. Will the standard AT&T 3G sim card (non-micro sim chip) work in the GS2? Does the imported GS2 come with a sim tray?

No SIM tray in the package, SGS2 was not build for Apple converts.
Your unlimited 3G will be grandfathered if you put that SIM (with your own adapter) into the SGS2.
Further, I believe (but am NOT sure) you can call in and ask them to "mark" your grandfathered unlimited plan as 4G by telling them your new device is an Infuse or Atrix and giving them the IMEI, per the numerous posts here. I repeat, I did NOT do it myself, so I can't 100% assure you can do it and will not lose anything.
I just upgraded my Unlimited 3g plan to 4g and at&t accidentally put me on the 2gb limited plan and removed my txt messaging. Don't know how the rep made this mistake.
Wasnt a big deal to resolve and get back the unlimited plan. Just make sure you clarify multiple times.
Btw, my 4g and 3g speeds suck in salt lake city. Can't get higher than 2mb download.

My understanding is that once you switch from 3G to 4G, AT&T will remove the unlimited data and ask to put you on one of their new data plans. THis is how they are getting people to let go of the unlimited data. Is this true?
I am on the 500mb go phone plan and I live in a "4g" city. The best speed I ever got was 1.8mb's and that was at 11pm.
I have tryed:
1) Lot's of APN's
2) 2 new sims. (4G sims)
3) going to two att store's three times in all.
So I like this phone alot, but the "4g" speeds are sub par and then some. I was thinking to do one of the below if I keep it:
1) Sprint hotspot
2) verzion hotspot
3) Buy a verzion iphone 5 and use it as hot spot.( I don't like the iphone, but if it has LTE then maybe.)
The phone it's self is a 9.5/10 in my book and better any thing else so far.( This is just me)
If I sell the phone then I would go for one of the upcoming phone's. (No iphone if not LTE, better CPU then all or 1080P LCD.)
Thank's all and this is a phone that I realy want to keep.
Well it's either you change to postpaid plan w/ medianet or you do the hotspot thing, your choice.
How do I go to the postpaid plan w/ medianet and are the speeds any better?

You'd have to get a non-smartphone plan. The speeds are way better, usually around 5mb or even higher but it varies on location.
That's the kind of speed I wanted in the first place. Now how should I go to this plan. do I need to call the 611# or could I do it in a store.
Edit: Where is this plan and how do you set it up right and keep your phone#. thanks

I'm not too knowledgeable on this situation since you started on a gophone plan. But I believe if you want to switch without getting stuck on those 2 year contracts, you'd have to order the AT&T Sim Card. Then just set up your minutes and add the medianet plan, btw you may need a dumbphone imei# so try and find a razor or something.
I can't find this plan on their site. I may just go to verzion and get the Nexus Prime, becuase I get 20% off the plan and $50 off the phone, BUT I realy wanted unlimited data.( From job)
Edit: I know it's not out yet and maybe it's just the GS2 HD LTE. This is my first smartphone and 2nd cell phone so I waited for over a year to made my pick and I like this phone alot and hope to fix this.
Dude are you even trying to look? If you be more clearer on what you can't find it be easier to tell you where too look. If your talking about the medianet plan it's in the added service section called Unlimited Non-Smartphone data.
I see it now. now how should I do this and what will the end cost be?
I will not be trying anything intell the next day. can any one put a vid on youtube of this phones 4G speed's. All I have seen is wifi tests. thank's
I have no idea, plan is based on how you choose it to be. So far it's 5$ for the simcard, then the rest is dependent on your minutes and extra services.
How should I buy the sim card and plan. Do I go to the store and ask for this plan or do it online some how. I don't want a two year lock in so how do I miss that mess.
Edit: opps
Can you tell me how I should set it up then. I don't talk on the phone alot or im alot, but Data I need lots and lots of it.
Ok I got a new sim card now what? Do I need to put in a dumb phone first or can I call from the S2?
I got the sim and put it in the phone and tryed the 611# and it does not work. Help!
I read somewhere that you can log into your att account and see what data plan you are on to ensure you can get HSPA+s speeds but i cant find that info anymore. does anyone know?
My roomate came from a samsung captivate to an atrix 4g and we want to make sure he's getting the full speed possible
If u own an matrix 4g you're deffinatrly never going to get 4g speed because real 4g doesn't exist yet h+ is jut a bit faster than 3g and deffinately limited and there no extra charge for h+ because it isn't much different.
Download speed test on the market and u can see ur up and down speeds
At best it is 3.5G and depending where you live you won't see h+ speeds but wish u luck

Att requires a smartphone data plan with the purchase of the atrix. All att data plans have the same speed. If he bought the phone through att, he has a data plan, he has att "4g".

From what I've read, there are 3 different data plans. Basic smart phone, smart phone with 4g, and some other one I don't know.

(All data plans do not have the same speed as someone else stated).
The other one is iPhone data plan. Actually, I believe there is also a BB plan.
When you purchase an Atrix they automatically put you on the correct data plan, so you need to check nothing. That data plan will be 2GB, 4GB, or unlimited data on 4G, which is not real 4G as was already stated.
If you are really that concerned about your roommate's data plan, tell him to call AT&T for crying out loud and talk to them!

He didn't purchase it from att, got one off Craig's list . He has a grandfathered unlimited plan. We all know how dumb customer service reps can be.
Ok so you know the plan. Unlimited. that's all it will say on the site. If you insist, you log in and navigate to your account and plan settings. If you want to test speed, download speedtest from the market.

under Mobile Network Type, you should see "HSPA". That is the best ya gonna get from most AT&T connections (so called 3.5G) I don't recall ever seeing it say HSPA+. If you have UMTS, you are getting old "mediaNet" speeds, probably a fallback from a crappy signal from the tower. I don't know how the 4gLTE displays.
edit: this is indicative of what type of signal you are getting, not what plan you have. But if you have HSPA, you got the plan you want.

Not an expert on att so not trying to argue, but according to this, just because your seeing hspa signal, does not mean you are getting enhanced speeds.

The different data plans do not affect speed, just the amount of data you can use. You are limited to what your phone's hardware can do and your coverage.

At&t phones will work on T-Mobile (or simlpemobile) network (calls, SMS, mms) but will not have 3/4G data. The modem hardware isn't compatible. You would get EDGE which is pretty slow.
If you use straight talk, you will get 3G data. You will have to buy a sim card online then get $45 refill card, and you would have unlimited everything.
I'm sure edge is faster than the 700-1000kb I'm getting from boost

Think "dialup modem" class speeds. A bit faster - I think 200-300 kilobits/sec if you're REALLY lucky.
Right. EDGE is 2G technology. Not much good for web 2.0 stuff or streaming.

Would the 3g data be HSPA+ and how good are the speeds? I have the GS2 on Sprint and my contract is up in September. I'm thinking about going to Straight Talk with a used ATT or TMO GS2. Just wondering which phone would be the best choice.
the 3g data is HSPA+ with straight talk. I switched over from a verizon galaxy nexus and i can say that the HSPA+ speed here is comparable to the Verizon 4g LTE speed, but the signal strength is not near as good.
If im outside, i get about 7 meg down and 1-2 meg up on my at&t i777 (straight talk) and i get 4-6 meg down and .7 - 1 meg up on my 4gLTE Gnex.
Indoors, my GSM signal suffers whereas my CDMA signal does not. Speed not that big of difference, just hard to keep a steady signal with my GSM phones.
Either way, a GREAT deal on straight talk... They say its unlimited but they will call you if you have excessive use (250-500'ish megs in a day or some say over 2gb in a month) and some have said they will deactivate your sim, but i havent had that issue yet.
Great info. Thank you. Somehow the guy at my local Sprint store got me a 25% discount last September when I bought my GS2 for being an employee of Boeing. Thing is I don't work for Boeing and never have. The 3g is horrible and I really don't want to sign another contract with Sprint. It's a decent deal now with the discount but if corporate catches on and takes that away, I'm stuck with it. I thought about the GSM Gnex for $350 from Google, but it really isn't the phone I want. I might wait until the next Nexus arrives. Rumors are we'll see one in early November.
Honestly, this thread should be a sticky. I'm sick and tired of people posting this same exact thing weekly!!!!!!!
Hi all,
I've been hanging in the International Note forums as I have a GT-N7000... I love it!! And running ParanoidAndroid it's awesome!!
Anyways, I will be moving to the US (San Francisco) next month and I have a few questions for my fellow Note'rs:
-Will I be able to use my International Note in the US with at least 3G speeds and/or HSDPA speeds?
- Is there a carrier that will let me use my phone and give me cheaper prices?
- For new voice+data plans, can I get unlimited for cheap somewhere with good coverage?
Any other topics or gotcha's you can think of will be appreciated!
See you soon !!!
You can use Straight Talk unlimited voice text data $45 US. Its monthly, and you buy refill cards.
Your phone supports the AT&T frequencies. You will get at least 3g. But you can go to their site to see a map to verify that.
You will have to purchase the sim card ahead of time, as not many stores sell the sim.

yup, straight talk sim, as stated above. and you could always throw me that international version and take my U.S version and get 1/2/3/4G LOL.
BTW, there is no such thing as an Unlimited GSM/HSPA data plan in the USA. Voice, yes, SMS/MMS, yes, mobile data, no.
Straight Talk say their data is unlimited but they cut you off after 2GB/mo. Although I have read that ST will turn it back on it you call them up and profess to not using the data for file downloading, running a server or business using it.
Thanks, Straight Talk sounds like a good fit...
Is the quality good? Or at least as good as the competitors'?
>they cut you off after 2GB/mo
Do you mean that they throttle speed down or do they cut it off and no more data is flowing?
To give you an idea, I am on Vodafone Spain at the moment (living in Spain heheh and my plan is €120 per month (=approx. $150 per month), I get 1000 minutes in the day, 1000 minutes nights and weekends, and 1 GB of data.
So Straight Talk will be a good bargain!!!

The latter. go over 2GB and no data.
Wow that's radical...
Here with Vodafone when I go above 1GB of data they I go into "Best Effort" mode when I cannot be guaranteed the speed of the connection, it can be HSDPA, it can be 3G... or it can be GPRS...
But I'll have a connection...
But again it costs an arm and a leg!!
So Straight Talk seems like the best deal...
If you don't mind...trade your International Note for an unlocked AT&T and get Tmobile monthly 4G for $30 and get 5GB's of 4G data. After 5GB they throttle you. Still way better and cheaper than Straight Talk's plan. But you will be on Tmobile's Network...but i heard Tmobile speeds are pretty fast in the bay area. If you use your current International note on Tmo's network you'd only get 2G coverage...not the biz. Good luck on relocating!
