"Unlike the splash screen and boot animation, the Android lock screen is rather tightly integrated into the framework of the operating system. Therefore, replacing it isn’t usually as simple as flashing the splash screen or replacing the bootanimation.zip file, though in certain cases, it can be replaced by flashing a zip file from recovery. On certain devices that use their own customized user interface such as HTC Sense, Samsung TouchWiz etc., the stock Android lock screen is usually present but overridden by the version provided by the manufacturer.
Much of the customizations available for the lock screen are in form of apps that usually run as a layer above the stock lock screen. These allow you to change the lock screen’s look, add more functionality such as enabling widgets, adding information streams from social media and increasing the number of unlock options, letting you directly launch certain apps after unlocking" (http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/how-to-replace-and-customize-android-lock-screen-guide/)
So if you don't want to use a separate tweak/app you will have to install a custom ROM.

Since I enjoy using the phone in portrait when laying down, I finally found an app that would work. I know there are ROMS that can set the default to portrait, but I also wanted to lock landscape as well (similar to the iphone)
Unfortunately it's $1.49 in the market, but I haven't found any free app that works (most were just widgets that turn auto-rotate on and off)

It does work, but be aware that (at least for me with ADW Launcher) when/if one uninstalls the app, the default orientation gets locked to whatever it was last set and will not return to auto.
YMMV.
I'm using it now. It's not bad. Has some flexible configuration options. Thanks for the tip.
I've been looking for something like this. Thanks a mil
Ok just to be sure, this software locks the orientation in Portrait for any applications? Or is it just for the launcher?

It's a paid app
That would be stealing
It would violate XDA rules.
hmmm now that true portrait mode is available, maybe there would be some new apps that would follow its method of changing orientation and would be free.
Is there any way to change the boot and/or lock screen default orientation without flashing a custom ROM?

You don't need to flash an entire ROM, there is a thread with the mod here at XDA.
The only other lockscreen option is a replacement lockscreen that allows/forces portrait.
For booting, the initial Dell logo is pretty much hard coded in, but you can use a different boot animation that is portrait. I made one with pics of my grand kids.

Even though I have root, I still need to flash a custom recovery to do this however, correct?
I just prefer the plain jane lockscreen in portrait. I tried all the paid and free options, and for me at least, they sucked.

If you want to flash any kind of .zip file for a theme or boot animations you need a custom recovery. But, you can change the boot animation without using recovery by placing the alternate boot animation in /data/local. If there is a bootanimation.zip file in this directory it over rides the stock boot animation. So you only need a file explorer with root access to do this.
I believe that you do not need a custom recovery to do the portrait lock hack, but I have not done it.
If you don't have StreakMod Recovery installed how are you backing up your phone? I use nandroid to make a backup every couple of weeks at least. You can prevent StreakMod from being over written.

I'm rooted and I'm using Titanium Backup, but I'm still on s Stock Froyo ROM. I'm taking my time and reading as much as I can before I jump into flashing on my Streak, because even though I came from the HD2 and the Vibrant (and flashed those dozens of times) I'm always a little hesitant when I'm trying a new method and I can't afford to brick, maybe more than most, because I can't get ANY decent phones here in Panama.
One provider sells the 8GB Galaxy S for $800!
Thanks for the info. I'd love to have the PIN screen default to portrait also. Does the above mentioned hack accomplish this as well?
I actually had to change my PIN because I couldn't reach "0" when I changed my screen dpi to 180, which I much prefer over the standard, since it was then blocked/obscured by the Emergency Call button.
There doesn't seem to be any alternative locksreen options for the Streak that actually flash the frawework as opposed to running as a application/service. Is this correct? Is there any reason why other devices (such as Captivate) have flashable lockscreens but the Streak doesn't?
Just curious, thanks.

No special reason i can think of, i always liked the donut lockscreen, but i doubt i will ever be having that on Froyo or Gingerbread.
Try ripple lock in the market

(disclaimer: i'm just curious as well)
why can't you just install the app? i mean there are benefits or something with flashing?
For one it'll def be a lot quicker because it'll come straight from the system, and two you don't have to worry about double locks

So why not put the lockscreen app of your choice into the \system\app folder of your favourite rom then reflash it?

Which app should be replaced for this to work?
Does the lock screen come from a system app or is it "built-in" to the kernel or some other part of the framework?
How can you make sure that the replacement lockscreen integrates into the system like the built-in lockscreen?
You make it sound simple, but is it?

Well it depends on the app, not all apss will install from that folder, in that folder of you rom, if its a custom rom that is, are all the system apps installed, like the browser, camera, launcher/launchers etc...
For instance, before i install a custom rom, i will go through deleting all apps i don't want and adding ones i do, from experience i know some do not install ok but most do.
So say, put Agile Lock free edition in that folder, install the rom and see if it works for you.
Just an example.

Your advice is offered as an "easy" solution, but without any basis. I personally could care less about using a different lockscreen, but if you are going to offer a suggestion you might want to think it through, test it, or make it clear that you have not tried it and have no idea if it will work.
And even though I knew that you could modify custom ROMs prior to flashing, perhaps the OP did not?

Well Marvin, no point biting my head off when you failed to answer his question as well, you know as well as i do, that its not possible to change the lockscreen of the Android OS itself as its very tightly integrated with the rest of the OS.
The solution i am offering is to simply install a 3rd party lockscreen and use no lock to disable the system lockscreen, i don't think anybody has another solution to the android lockscreen debacle.

Well I didn't know that about the lockscreen, but I suspected it, which is why I ask the questions I did. I never tried to answer the original question - as I did not know the answer.
I know how to change which apps are shown on the lock screen, but is there a way to change the icons for those apps?
I'm using Apex Launcher and I've changed some of the icons for apps on my home screens, but it still shows the original icons on the lock screen. It would be nice if I could change them so that they match.
Is there an app that I can use to do this?
Many thanks for any help you can give.

Thanks, but you didn't read my actual post. I know how to change the apps that are listed on the lock screen (which is done using the method you posted), but I want to change the actual icons for particular apps.
Anyone?

Actually, I'm pretty sure it says that he knows how to change what programs go there, but he wants to change Icons for certain things. E.g. he wants a different icon for the Dialer instead of the stock one, he doesn't want to change it so Dialer isn't there.
You'll have to use themes to change icons though afaik, so you're probably better off looking for that OP.

Read the very first thing I said: -
"I know how to change which apps are shown on the lock screen, but is there a way to change the icons for those apps?"
It's not possible unless someone mods the touchscreen (probably quite difficult).
Your best solution would be to change the actual app icon - there should be a png in drawable-res/??? (??? = resolution of sgs3) that is the icon. you can overwrite it with winzip or whatever (make sure the size is the same though).
Axtually, just use a different lock screen app.

it is possible i think. Just use xposed framework and download icon themer module.

Icon Themer: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=40603494
Is it possible? If so, how?
It is not possible with the stcok lock screen+stock rom.. Earlier AOKP had the feature to do this in stock lock screen, but now the option to set a separate wallpaper for lock screen has been removed. I think you can try some custom loc k application which will let u do this.

Thank you! I've installed a third-party locker application to allow me to do this.
Do you have any idea if Motorola's version of Android can do this (namely the Motorola Razr i)

I have personally never used a motorol android device.. So i am not sure whether the motorola ROMs have a feature like this.
is it possible to set a bulk number of lockscreen wallpapes to auto~change every time lock.
Hi, is it possible to change the lock screen on an AOKP ROM after being built (i.e. By the user)?
Thanks

I suppose so. Beyond customization settings, you're getting into development territory. Probably easier to use a lockscreen replacement from the store - there are a lot of them.
