Does flashing recovery.img through ODIN trip counter? - Galaxy S III Q&A, (US Carriers)

Hey guys, I've already rooted and installed CWM recovery using MrRobinson's method here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426
I'm trying to upgrade CWM to CWM touch with the downloaded recovery.img file. I guess there are two ways to do this, either through ADB or using Odin. If i use the Odin method, will it trip the counter?
Thanks!

Only use odin for stock rom or injected root.
other than that use adb if you can otherwise, flashing recovery with odin will increase the flash counter

Flashing anything in odin besides the stock system.img will trip the counter. Trust me.

Ok thanks so much for the quick response. I used ADB

[Q] Flashing ClockworkMod

Hello,
I am currently running on stock Rom BUKJ3 (2.3.5) rooted with DoomLord toolkit V4 and stock kernel BUKJ3.
Is there a way that a can flash ClockWorkMod recovery without changing my kernel version ?
I have Rom manager installed, is it ok to flash ClockWorkMod with it ?
Sorry about the noob questions and thanks in advance for your help
Kernel and recovery are part of the same SGS2 partition, so are flashed as a combo.
ROM Manger is NOT compatible with SGS2 CWM Revovery, so don't use it.

If you're just after the recovery with a stock kernel, check Chainfire thread here: flash the closest matching kernel. Will give root and CWM recovery, else flash a custom kernel.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
Edit:
1. You can use Hellcat hc-kTool (free on market) to dump your current kernel as zImage directly to sdcard before flashing Chainfire kernel.
2. Once CF kernel and CWM recovery is installed, then use the tool to flash back your original kernel, but you will keep root and CWM recovery.

Ok I get it... so basically need to flash a kernel with CWM already embedded.
"CF-Root-SGS2_XW_XEN_KJ3-v5.0-CWM5" should be a good choice since it´s not the same kernel as mine "BUKJ3" but it’s as close as it gets, right?
I have already rooted with DoomLords toolkit and I read that CF_root kernel also adds root, is that going to be a problem?
I also have mobile Odin installed, can I flash CF_root with it so the flash counter doesn’t increase?
Thanks for your help UpInTheAir !!

Should work, else try a custom kernel with CWM recovery.
Won't be a problem, as most custom kernels will auto root every time you flash them anyway.
According to Chainfire thread, it won't increase if zImage flashed through the installed CWM Manager app. So, can't see why the CF-root zImage would increase the counter with mobile Odin.
Best bet for longer term is to purchase a USB jig from Ebay and reset the counter that way. Much easier, and advantage to force phone into dl mode if your ever semi-bricked.

I was just locking in to that in Intratech´s page.
ok so... just flashed cf_root with Mobile odin and went as smooth as silk. I am probably going to keep CF´s kernel since everything seems to be working fine.
Doing nandroid backup right now
Thank you for your help veyka and UpInTheAir !!
And also a great thanks to Chainfire for is great work!
No worries.
Just another piece of advice. Do a little trading on EFS backup. Flashing has a minimal chance of corrupting this file and contains the phone IMEI. If this becomes corrupted, you won't be able to use the phone for anything other than an alarm clock, and can't be restored flashing through Odin or nan-droid.
There are backup tools on the market and XDA. I use Hellcat hc-kTool and also GSII Repair to backup to sdcard and for safe keeping copy on PC.
Happy flashing

I agree, backup your EFS asap, I have had mine randomly corrupt on me, and I was very thankful for the backups, also make sure to take a copy of the EFS backup off device.

You would be better following the instructions when installing firmware ..
Remove battery for one hour charge battery .
Suggest you try flashing a stock rom via Odin .
No download mode then buy USB recovery jig .

Being unlocked won't make it fail. Also to relock you will need to use Odin. Can you link the stock image you're using?
By the way don't forget to use triangle away to reset your flash counter before locking out back up.

[Q] Firmware upgrade encountered an issue after trying to Flash back to stock

I have a Verizon Galaxy S4 ME7 build that has been rooted with Safestrap and working fine. Today I wanted to unroot it, so I used Odin v. 3.07 to flash this file: I545VRUAME7_I545VZWAME7_I545VRUAME7_HOME.tar.md5. This failed in Odin (attached is screenshot of Odin dialog). I took out the battery and tried to turn the phone back on, and got the download screen with the message "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again.". Unfortunately, I did all of this before uninstalling safestrap and I don't know if that's the issue. I can still get into Odin mode, but don't know what to do from here. Please help! Thanks!
