Battery Drain Solving - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok people I could use some help. I think I am getting some average battery times but the score card would definitely say 'could do better'.
So what I want to know is what screen shots from BetterBatteryStats/Phone/other would I need to upload here to help someone with far more technical nous than me identify what is causing the drains and how to stop them?
To start here is my battery screen shot for today. This is with approx. 3.20hours of screen on time.

The screen is a real battery-hog due to it's size. You may want to lower brightness, that helps a lot.
For starters, please attach Kernel Wakelocks and Partial wakelocks from BetterBatteryStats, that shall show if something drains your precious juice.

Excellent. I'll start with that. Would have done it this minute but I just plugged my phone in....Doh! Will upload this this afternoon.

OK here we go....I guessed from looking around the forums this is the best way to deliver the information? If not let me know and I'll change it.

Not sure whether this is relevant but I have Tasker turning WiFi on and off in two locations.

Alright, let's see: Your phone's screen was on for an hour, but the phone was awake for two. That means we found a wakelock. Unfortunately I have no idea what "deleted_wake_locks" stands for. Maybe someone else knows more about this. Besides that wake lock, you seem to spend quite some time in an area with bad or no signal at all. That will drain your battery pretty quickly too as the phone is constantly searching for a better signal. You might want to turn of phone data in that area to prevent to phone from trying to get a better signal all the time. Finally, you should consider getting rid of the Facebook app. I've read that it isn't exactly gentle when it comes to saving battery.

Rationale: In the API available to android drivers it is advised to call wake_lock_destroy before freeing the memory of the wakelock struct that you created. This is probably done on shutdown OR perhaps if for some reason a driver is unloaded from the kernel. Whenever it does this it ads the wakelock stats to the deleted_wake_locks.
Know actions: AlarmManager itself is not generating partial wakelocks but the applications (intents) that were set to be called when an alarm goes off do. Alarms can be listed through the menu "Actions -Alarms".
Known conditions of occurence: In relation to Wifi and depending on the sleep policy wakelocks seem to be collected when screen goes off and Wifi is turned off

That doesn't help battery life, that just fixes an error in battery stats reporting.
That cell standby problem was NOT draining excess battery it was just being reported incorrectly by the android battery stats.

easy. use speedmod kernel

i am use ninphetamin3 1.20 with criskeloron v5.1 and my battery life is good

Surely it's not just the kernel though? I'm using Siyah as I thought that was supposed to be good? Will changing it help? Surely it's not that causing the wakelocks?
Any other suggestions or comments on the stats I posted ?

Maybe post a batterystats dump in the betterbattery stats forum.. it would be cool if some guy who could really read onto batterystats very well to start a betterbattery stats thread just for us gs3 owners.. would help everyone..cos gs3 is a popular device and it would be easier to post them here for quick answers

Mmmmm maybe you sometimes find that responses get lost in those things.
Anyone else able to help here?

Your battery goes down steep all the time, but according to your screenshot of the battery stats there are 2 critical points, the latter not ending.
Please next time also include a screenshot of the menu appearing after tapping on the graph (which includes screen-on, wifi and signal quality)
According to BBS some of the issues are related to:
No or Unknown Signal (): 1 h 26 m 54 s (5214 s) Ratio: 20.5%
Poor Signal (): 1 h 4 m 45 s (3885 s) Ratio: 15.3%

No or poor signal causes heavy battery drain since it keeps searching for the network until the connection is re-established.
Are you on 3G connection? If so, Facebook is a known battery drain.
Try using 2G whenever you're not needing the speed and see if that improves your battery life. (Only to test for now)
Alternatively disable Sync (all of Sync, not only Google or Facebook) and check if that improves the life.
You are on an old ROM version, try upgrading to a BLFB-based firmware or a CM9/AOSP based one. Both have great battery life improvements over the old ALEx Roms.

Can I just upgrade the Rom from the ALEx one I currently use or will I have to go back to stock in order to do it?

Galaxy sII battery drain?

I unplugged from the charger at 7am today. Watched some youtube videos, listened to some spotify (15 mins) and calls were like 20 mins. By the time it was 1:30pm my battery was dead. Ive been noticing les battery performance now. I tried closing apps and uninstalling the ones that use up memory too. Nothing works. What should i do?

Install BetterBatteryStats and see what's the big drainer on your phone.
i did install better batterystats.. I uninstalled all the apps that drain. Still no use:-(

if you could provide us with your settings and a log from betterbatterystats so we can help you out
and by settings i mean, sync how often, 3g or wifi or both
gps, all that kind of stuff
definitely agree with rorixrebel above, and install juidefender from the android market it will use your battery as efficiently as possible.
It could also be a battery issue, and if you need a new one I recommend the 1900 Anker one (search amazon) it fits without the need for a new cover and gives you 20-25% more life.

same problem here..
btw can someone help me understand bettery battery stats...
sys ?? count?? etc??
which parameter denotes drain?
Are you running a stock ROM? My stock GSII had pretty awful battery life - I had much better results from Cyanogenmod.

[Q] Reasonable expectation of battery life?

I have been struggling with trying to figure out if the battery life I am seeing is what my Atrix is really capable of. I am occasionally a heavy user, but on weekends I am a very light user. I'll start at 8am with 100% and be almost dead at 6-8pm. I have searched around and seen other Atrix users with 24 hours of battery life and even if I tried my hardest to not use my phone I wouldn't get those kind of numbers. I feel fairly confident in saying i scoured search results and tried everything i could find to extend battery life.
Am I doing something wrong?
Is there something I can do to help?
I know it's been asked before, but I am hoping to get some current answers for this question: what kind of battery life numbers are you getting on your Atrix? Which rom are you using?
Atrix 4G running CM7 RC3. If the answer is "keep it charged as often as possible", it is what it is. It would be great to find an answer to why battery life is so much shorter than others though! Many thanks in advance.
Just noticed CM7.2 stable was released, upgrading to that now to see if battery life improves. Might try a full wipe to see if battery life is better without email, syncs, etc. etc. if the upgrade doesn't help.
i would recommend getting cpu spy and also download and install as a zip 'blue sleep fix' (blue sleep zip can be found in the CM7 thread). This has greatly improved my battery life.

Which kernel? Flash Faux 1.0GHz and undervolt across the board by -50mv. Instant battery life!
Also, use ROM Manager or equivalent to stop all non essential apps from starting on boot.

You should turn wifi off when not in use, that will save battery life.
Badass battery will let you know how you spend your battery by % and let you know which app takes the most battery. (Lets you get a really readable easily understandable battery read out.)
I can help you get even better battery if you use this app and give me some numbers (it has a share via gmail/etc)

turning off wifi is not going to help him that much. I leave my wifi on all the time no problems, make 2 days light usage no problem.
More likely he's got some apps running around in the background. I suggest he pick through what he's got installed and start turning off the things that like to sync all the time in the background.
I think step number 1 would be to install a non-stock ROM and startover fresh.
Blur-based ROMs (Nottachtrix was really good) then the faux123 kernel then slowly start installing the apps he likes to use and monitor battery life. It might take a month but he's definitely got an offender here or there causing these problems.
also install Juice Defender. My mom's Galaxy S2 was having tons of problems with battery life even though she wasn't using it at all, 60% battery life at 3pm without using it at all, installed that and immediately helped her a lot, like 80% by 3pm WITH use.
Also, clear your dalvik cache. After installing lots of stuff and not using it, it just fills up with sometimes poorly written code. Clearing it always makes phone faster in my experience.

I think this is what I will do today! I'll do a nandroid backup, and try Nottachtrix with no extra stuff installed or setup. I will report back! I appreciate all the help to get my phone performing where it should be.
Just wanted to report in. I tried a clean ROM as stated in my previous post with no luck. I just couldn't get past the battery life I was getting with cyanogenmod WITH all of the apps and syncs enabled. Should I try another ROM maybe?
Maybe your battery is just a bit old? After ~2 years, you can expect that battery life drops dramatically. if you are a heavy user this might happen earlier. Maybe check with the battery of a friend of yours whether it's a software or a hardware issue
Nvmd
You could be right, the battery might be dying.
I was on vacation the past few days so I got the opportunity to not use my phone most of the day (job requires me to use the phone a lot). The battery lasted about 12 hours and looked like it had about 4 hours left. So maybe I am expecting too much, but I'm not trolling...no.
If you aren't going to be helpful, go somewhere else. You could have said "Your phone screen was on for probably longer periods than the average user and that's why you can't hit longer hours". Based on your previous comments, I shouldn't expect much from you though.
Many thanks to all who are helping me. You're all awesome.

Go into system settings > Battery and check what is using most battery.
If it's screen there's not much to do other than leave auto brightness on.
The phone does use a lot of juice when it's on though, undervolting and underclocking might help a bit...
download cpu spy and betterbattrrystats
1 double check your phone is going into deep sleep when u switch of screen
2 use betterbatterystats to find out what's using all ur juice ( disable all the things u can ie sync mobile data etc)
3 have u overlooked or undervolted
4 what is your max cpu freq set at.
5 once you've found rogue app remember to uninstall betterybatterystats otherwise it will eat your battery ( learnt from experience )

make sure "deep sleep" got the most time

It could be media scanner. Sometimes it get's stuck and keeps on running. You can download rescan media from playstore and disable it.

Not really. I'm a newbie myself so sorry mate.
You could post your better battery stats on its thread. People there usually analyze it for you.
But basically your looking for apps with high time and /or count.
Each count represents that app going out of deep sleep for a microsecond or less. So an app with a high count will be constantly waking up your phone even if it's total time is only a few seconds.

Try to use watchdow to see wichs apps/process/system process are using most of your cpu, ma xcpu freq (1400mhz) shouldn't be that high so maybe a rogue app is draining your battery
If you want to see the wakelocks i recomend using GSam battery monitor, in the app sucker you can see wich apps are waking your device an how many times, but you have to try out after a period of time
The other problem could be some corrupted media files that make your mediaserver drain a lot of battery, if so, check the .nomedia files in your sd, look for image not loading in the gallery, use an mp3 checker app to se if some of your music files are corrupted (search through xda, someano posted an utility to do this) and try to re-encode your mp3, in my case, this solved my issue
hope it helps

it could be a whole bunch of things, people won't be able to help if you don't post any info of your device rom/kernel, wifi on? gps on? screen brightness? all that needs to be taken into consideration.
The most common problems for battery drain are media scanner as mentioned earlier, Google maps, wifi is a big drainer even if you are IDLE for some reason wifi keeps on receiving something (i'm guessing it is the "keep alive" packet) but havent dug into it, also found that "Samsung push Service" was sucking juice so I froze the bugger, the last thing I found on my S3 (runing Wanam's leaked JB DLH4) was "DRM Protected content" for some reason it kept coming up so I froze the sucker with Titanium backup and i'm doing around 20 to 21 hours average.
I've used Better Battery Stats, Battery Drain Analyzer and Android's own battery analyzer to keep track of my usage.
I hope anything of this helps you and good luck on your findings.

[Q] Bad battery perfomance

Hi everyone!
Some days ago I bought a new battery for my S3 (seller said to be genuine) and I am disappointed because its performance is almost the same as the one I was experiencing with my old battery (18 month-old battery). For this reason, I have been researching and I have done this until now:
*) Being honest, this comparison is somehow subjective since apart from the battery change, my S3 was officially updated from 4.1 to 4.3 almost at the same time I changed the battery. Then, I wonder whether this update may have affected my diagnosis on the battery duration.
1) According to the point * I decided to do a battery calibration "without root" consisting in draining the battery to 0% and charging until 100%. I haven't seen any improvement doing this.
2) As consequence I analyzed wakelocks. I have addressed two of them from the System:
- AudioOutLock. to fix this one I did as recommended: disabling sounds when typing and all of this.
- Backup. Fixed by disabling the backup from Google (I would like to have it enabled but if it is causing a battery drain...)
3) I let the phone the whole night turned on with the 3g connection on and I got a ratio of 2%/hour draining. I have read this is more or less under the normal parameters.
After doing all of this I'm still not happy with the performance. Usually, my mobile gets under 20% by the end of the day with the screen on in a range between 1h30m and 2h. If I remember well at the very begging (when I bought my phone), I was getting my phone at 20% by the end of the day but having the screen on for 4h or more. After buying a new battery, I was expecting to return to that situation.
Do you have any hint? As for example a better way to calibrate? Factory reset may help? Should I check a specific wakelock?
Thank you very much in advance!
I forgot to mention that when I let it charging over night, my s3 does not always charge until 100. Sometimes it's until 98 or 95. I don't know if this helps you guys as a hint but I want to provide as much information as possible.
Thanks

Thanks!, I will check. But so far I have briefly seen it looks like there is not a specific solution more than disabling gNow and some other things. Maybe a good option is to downgrade or using a custom rom in which there aren't these problem.
its same to me.
aftet update 4.2 to 4.3.

Hi, look for XDA-forum "Better Battery Stats", there is an excellent tool to analyse battery drain and the community in this thread provides very good support.

Thanks!. I have been using Wakelock detector but I will try with this one. I was wondering if using this kind of applications for checking the wakelocks may provoke some battery drain itself. I mean, should it be used just for analyzing when you experience a battery issue? or should they be permanently installed no matter whether you have battery problems or not?

Hi, Better Battery Stats is using an already existing process of Android to obtain it's information, therefore the influence of the app itself on battery drain should be negligable.

Thanks for the info!. I have not seen anything special in the partial wakelocks. In the kernel wakelocks, it is difficult to distinguish whether one entry is specially problematic or not. After what I have read so far it may be the mix of social apps I have now installed:
- Whatsapp
- Twitter
- Messenger (FB messenger)
- Line
I guess maybe I have too many of them reason why the battery is draining more than normally when the screen is off

Which firmware you are using. .Sometimes it's the problem with the firmware. .For example GML2 and ML4 version firmware has a pretty bad battery drain. ..

mk6 is fine with the battery...so firstly install an app called better battery stats search for it...install it and let the phone to be in standby mode for 4-5 hours..and then see in partial wakelocks and kernel wakelocks..and post those screenshots on bbs thread...someone will surely help you..
sometimes changing kernel could solve the problem..boeffla is the one i am satisfied with..and agni kernel is also one of the better kernels..:good:

Sorry for the delay to answer, I've been busy. Here I post the images of the battery stats. Sorry, they are not what you told me to be having them 5 hours quiet (that's difficult for me). However I can tell you that the 40minutes of screen on where just chatting on whatsapp or checking emails; no angry birds or need for speeds hehe... Are these images ok to be posted on the thread you told me? Thanks in advance!
I had a poor battery perfomance after upgrading from 4.1.2 to 4.3 until I've disabled fast dormancy. It seems that in v4.3 is enabled, and if your carrier doesn't support it, it will eat your battery. Donwload free from market "fast dormancy togle" by Siyah, and that's it

I have just rooted the phone and disable the fd. I hope this works!. Thank you very much for the info. However, now that I have it rooted, do you suggest to install a custom rom for getting a better performance? if so, which? there is a good one with 4.4 and multi-view?.
Thanks in advance!
Try flashing allblacksback mod it makes the whole system dark and saves battery on display and also I recommend disabling Google play services but this means there will be no push services but it saves a lot of ? ? ? ?

After giving a try to the idea of disconnecting the fast dormancy here I give you some reports on the battery consumption. I don't know why but statistics are wrong from the point of view of the duration (3 days).. since I disconnected it just 10 hours ago. I think its consumption is still huge. I hope you can give me a hint on it. Thanks!
Ive installed smartdroid. Battery perfomance seems quite better now! What do you think from the screens? However.. i find the screen too much consuming.... ive seen people managing 5 hours of screen in a day. Why i am not? May it be battery or configuration?
Thanks!
Do you have any hint on this? Ive seen that with the screen off the consumption is really good. However, with the screen on a doing normal stuff: chroming, feedlying or whatsapping it goes to a 20-25%/h.

Android OS and Android system battery drain. All info included, wakelocks, alarms etc

Hi My android os and android system has the same or even higher battery usage than screen, than something must be wrong. I'll try to give u guys as much info as I can. I included wakelock detecotr, gsm battery, stock battery monitor and betterbattery screenshots, also alarm dump. This info is from only 8 % of battery drain, and I had light set to 0%, and was on WiFi, when I'm using mobile data and little bit of higher brigtness it is much worse. I've done everything from this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/general/guide-extreme-battery-life-t3095884
Nothing helps. When using phone normally, browsing etc using mostly WiFi occasionally mobile data. And brigthness most of the time 0 to 7% and occasionaly 60 to 75 when outside. I have about 12 to 15 h with 3 to 3,5 SOT. I think I should squeeze little bit more, but I have no new ideas what I can do more, Can someone take a look on my info and maybe figure this out. Later I will post screenshot after more time on battery.

It seems that you are affected by the MobileRadioActive bug. Use this Xposed module to solve the issue.

Use Better Battery Stats to produce a idle log file and upload it here. A guide about how to get such a log file can be found in post #6 of this thread. You might also want to apply all settings from this guide to decrease your battery drain.

Ah, I see. Then grab the idle log file and upload it to the Extreme Battery Life thread. The OP of this thread, v7, is quite active and might help you with your issue.

I searched in the thread from your ROM and yes ... You are not the only one with battery drain problem and yes, they are not helpfull ... You can try another ROM if you want but please create a backup in your recovery so you can switch back to phoenix rom if you still have the problem.
