Kernel Source for EVO 4g LTE released - HTC EVO 3D

I saw today in the Rezound threads that HTC released the kernel source for the original kernel for the EVO 4G LTE
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1769335
Since the EVO 3d with ICS was released on Virgin Mobile around the same time, I wonder if the kernel source for the VM 3d will be released soon. I'm already feeling miffed that the "June-July" timeframe for the OTA from Sprint is turning out to be late July. It's like when the cable company says they will be there from 12 to 5 and show up at 4:59 (or later). Hopefully it will come soon so our talented devs can get their hands on it.

Lol, wishful thinking. I have completely given up on HTC at this point. I don't expect an official ics build for sprint anytime soon if not ever, and same goes for source code for rom or kernel. They have lost me as a customer after all this. I'll be waiting for the next nexus device.

Really is sad. This is the forgotten phone for them I swear. There is no excuse for us to not have had a source release if HTC is so willing to release it for the 4G LTE. None at all.

If HTC doesn't get there crap together they will go out of business. Has anybody looked at their stocks over the last year? Today its worth less than half of what it was last year. Hopefully they wake up to take care of business soon enough

honestly the best way to use an upgrade is on a iPhone (if you like them), because sprint devices drop value after 2-3 months you could pick one up used for contract price from craigslist

That's not a bad idea. Get the iPhone for contract price. Sell it for way more. Buy a used Evo LTE. Then keep the profit.

HTC has announced that the One X won't be unlockable on AT&T. If they don't allow unlocking on Sprint, how will that affect your decision? I'm sure a dev or three will eventually find a hole and give us a root method, but I'm sure it won't be easy and may be a good bit of a wait.
Yes that's a good point. If it cannot be unlocked, I'll keep my 3d.

the evo 3d is still good, not the best phone possible obviously but more than "good enough" with this update, I dont think that I will upgrade at least for six months more, probably next year.
my money now will go toward a new tablet instead of a new phone.
ICS is nice but the New Camera, Kickstand, S4 Krait, 16GB, HD Voice, LTE, NFC and Sense 4.0 with the new EVO is really tempting.
If anything, ICS/Sense 3.6 made my 3D go up in value.
I'm going to need a Sprint leak or final before I actually sell though. Can't roam with the current VM leak.

I think Agrabren mentioned something about finding an exploit in the S4 chip and stated that REVOLUTIONARY will only support qualcom chips. We should be in good shape with or without HTC's unlock, though I doubt Sprint will restrict unlocking.
Think I'm going to wait for the s3 i love sense but I'm tired of HTC the so called flagship phones come out with a bang then in 3 months or less they are forgotten look at the 3d and rezound

The OneX is unlockable even on AT&T. HTC announced they understood that customers were very upset that they could not unlock their devices and decided to make all new phones since the 3d, unlockable. As far as sense3.6, I'm not that excited about it. Sense 4.0 is still way much better. I'm going to get the OneX when it comes to sprint in June. But the name is going to be changed, adding it to the evo family. I hear its suppose to be the best evo yet, even topping the Evo4g LTE. I'm excited.

EVO V 4G

What the heck is the deal with the new EVO V 4G on Virgin Mobile. This phone is literally the exact same that we are using and it comes with an OFFICIAL ICS update. We EVO 3D users still do not have a truly official ICS update, so what the heck? Why don't original EVO 3D owners have a ICS upgrade while owners of the exact same phone with a different name do. WTF HTC?!?!? First HTC phone and probably last; the lack of support(dev included, compared to other phones of the same calibre) is just ridiculous. Looks like the next google device is the way to go.

Oh yea... I'm a *****. Haha!
Sprint did this to keep the production and life of the EVO 3D going, just on a "different" carrier. Even when I called Sprint to have my EVO 3D replaced a couple weeks ago, they were going to try and figure out a way to send me a Virgin Mobile 3D and get it working on Sprint (Yeah, they actually said that. Then I told them, 'I'm pretty sure you guys can't do that.')
This way the EVO 3D and WiMax lives on for a little longer, and they can usher in the LTE with their new lineup. WiMax will be a hand-me-down to Virgin Mobile eventually, just like the EVO 3D is to them, and the EVO Design is to Boost.

Oh hey you want ics too bad, root and install a Custom rom. Defeats the purpose of everything HTC. People complain that to make the iphone like a HTC they have to jailbreak it, we'll, HTC is doing the same thing with their phones.. People are to blind to see it.

Can't blame the developers for the degree of difficulty it takes to make custom roms for this phone without sources. I can honestly say if it wasn't for the 3d camera stuff, this phone would have a hell of a lot more development. Now HTC has been sandbagging as far a source code and kernel information and this is making me look more and more at the Galaxy S3 vs the Evo Lte.

I know there are ics roms available based on leaks... But the point is support your flagship devices first. That's in part why people buy them.
I am running a ics rom and there are some bugs. The one that bothers me is the front camera reversing pics. And then there was the fact no one knew the firmware messed things up for a lot of us. Sprint and htc need to support us first or we won't buy their flagship again.

I am running an ICS ROM and there are absolutely no bugs at all. The front camera reversing the pics was an instagram bug, not ICS and blaming anyone but yourself for flashing the VM firmware is just plain silly. If you want to blame anybody, blame sprint. The reason that VM got ICS is because Sprint didn't have to take a buttload of time adding their crapware to the image and then more time testing it. They should have done what they have done in the past and "leak" the image for us to "test" and find the bugs.

Yes, the firmware was my fault but to be fair some of the first leaks said to flash it for the rom to work. I don't want to offset the blame, but at the time we didn't know much about it and i was impatient (my fault for that).
Anyway... I don't have instagram, never installed it... yet still have that bug. i've had it since a full wipe. Tried 3 different roms... exists in all. so not sure why I have it if others experience it.
I've had that reversed front camera issue for awhile. Doesn't bug me though, it still remains on my current Rom (MikVirgin). Certain camera apps allow you to flip that ffc image, apparently this happens on plenty of other devices also.

Sprint cancelling ICS for 3D?

I heard another strong rumor from another strong source that Sprint is giving consideration to cancelling ICS for 3D and offer an early end to contract as good-gesture solution. I think we can see where this is going, right? Early end of contract = full discount price on the next phone.
I don't want one of those LTE phones until the stupid service is available here in Oregon. Right now, I have tons of WiMax and if switch to LTE, I lose 4G!
Why are we putting up with this crap?!
source?
but i think its crap, desire hd etc got 4.0 too...so fare...
This can't be !!
Why would they do that when the Virgin Mobile version has ICS? It wouldn't bother me though since we have 3.6 and 4.0 (minus 4g) available here now but it sucks because my contract is up in July so I would not reap any of said benefits.
Would like to see a credible source on this rumor.

Rumors. People are too gullible these days.
To pick the other side of this, most people on this forum probably have or will get ics one way or another. So if sprint would give us an early out i would welcome that. You know, when you think about it, sprint has all but kicked us 3d owners out the door anyhow. Try and get a refurb replacement. It's pretty tough right now. I can see how it would save them a bunch of hassles by not doing the update. I love my 3d even more after putting myn's ics on it. If i had an early upgrade i would probably follow him to ss3 land.
I was going to wait for the official update to be released, but it just got tiresome. I like running stock-rooted ROMs, and who knows when Sprint will get their head out of their ass to get this done. I bought my EVO 4G LTE, and it's made me happy now.
I would actually love that, sorry guys.

HTC has announced the 3d will get ICS but that means the 3d in general, the Sprint variant of the 3d has never been officially confirmed by anyone, neither HTC or Sprint. The update has to be officially requested to HTC by a carrier on a branded devices. It is entirely possible that Sprint may not do so. The only sure thing is that unbranded GSM 3ds will get ICS. Do you think EVO 4G LTE will (officially) get Android 4.1 "Jellybean" ?

^ see title
Hope so!
As long as there xda there will be jellybean. Look how long it took to get ics. I had ics on my htc sensation a entire year before htc released it.
So if you wait for official release you would be wasting your time if you have the evo. If you want fast updates without flashing roms stick with nexus devices

No doubt about it the phone is barely a month old and since 4.1 is looking more like an incremental upgrade I have a feeling it will spread much faster than ics did atleast to ics devices since it doesn't seem like HTC and other manufacturers will need to redo their skins. Just wonder what jellybean will bring to the table its still pretty much a mystery other than the nexus tablet

Wow, I should hope so. I don't think it's if, but when. I'm sure it will drag out longer than any of us think it should.
Yes, but "how long" is the challenge.
It'd be nice if it were independent of carriers/OEMs given its #.1 so its not a major revision.

There is no doubt that EVO LTE will get Jelly Bean. However, I don't think it'll be til late next spring/early next summer.
Reasoning:
The original EVO 4G was released summer of 2010. It was given Gingerbread AFTER the release of the EVO 3D. I'm intentionally ignoring the FroYo update because it was the first EVO and HTC wanted to keep it current (aka keep it selling) to make the EVO name famous. Clever marketing.
The EVO 3D was released in summer of 2011. Now that the EVO LTE has been released, there's some ICS OTA stuff happening in Europe (meaning it's only a matter of time before the 3vo gets it's ICS).
Thus, the EVO LTE was released summer of 2012. Based on the pattern, the LTE will most likely get official JB after next year's EVO release (if there is one).
Just my thoughts

Doubt it cause Samsung is being aggressive about their push so they probably be agresive on updates too, international GS2 got ICS back in March so that was probably one of the earliest updates with only one device they could make it happen faster, so htc need to make sure they keep it up

Yes, but we won't get the new sense 4.6 upgrade, only 4.5 because of some random reason given by HTC to encourage us to purchase a new phone that doesn't have the same inadequacy of hardware

I'll wait to see what 4.1 includes before making a firm guess. I but I would bet on getting before year end.
Don't expect ground breaking features today guys.

Not sure. Since it's an incremental update, it could be like Honeycomb (mostly meant for tablets).
Is it possible Jelly Bean will have the linaro toolchain implemented?

The og evo was released with 2.1. Was the first non nexus phone to get 2.2 about a month later. Then got 2.3 a month before the 3d was released (ive owned all the evos since their release) 2.3 to 4.0 was a huge update, 4.0 to 4.1 is not. Im sure we will see 4.1 this year

We got leaks before the EVO 3D release, but we didn't get official until after. I remember, I was there lol.
I'm just going by the update schedule already in place, I could be wrong it seems more likely that Sprint wants to get the next big EVO out for people to buy rather than support the one that's out now.

How Do Updates Work?

I've complained to Sprint on the delay of ICS for the EVO 3D. They have told me that they don't have the software and are unable to send it. Also they have told me that they have no control when HTC will send the upgrade to them.
Now, this makes no sense to me. I would think that Sprint has something to do with this and it's not just a HTC issue. In fact, HTC told me that it's a joint effort between them and Sprint, which makes sense to me.
This BS with the update is really making me consider getting a Galaxy Nexus for my next phone. But, I have concerns about Sprint just refusing to let the update happen, which is what I think is going on with the EVO 3D ICS update.
So, to my question, how do system updates work?

I truly don't believe its a sprint issue at this point. HTC has been less than forthcoming about updates for the 3d (or any HTC phone, for that matter).
I'm sure sprint has to QC check and approve/push the update (and probably has final say as to whether or not the update gets pushed at all) but I'm fairly certain the ball is in HTCs court right now.
Then again, this is 100% opinion and speculation on my end - I'm probably completely off base.

Oh yeah, that. That's been known for a while.
Regardless, that still gives HTC 25 more days before they have to provide sprint with software to test (assuming that is, in fact, the way it works - I still don't know) just to be compliant with their own schedule. On top of that, sprint will have to test and approve the update before pushing it out.
IMO, I think we'd see leaked RUUs for sprint if they actually had a functional ROM in testing right now. But at the same time, we've got the leaked ROM from virgin mobile, so who knows?
Either way, I'm glad I jumped ship and left sprint

Ok, so I just revisited the 3d forums for the first time since jumping ship.
I revise my opinion. Based on the fact that pretty much every other carrier seems to be receiving OTA updates (based on the massive number of threads in the general forum), I'm gong to go ahead and assume that sprint has, in fact, dropped the ball on this one.

I would assume that once HTC finally developes the updates, Sprint test it and adds/deletes anything they want to before it is released to the end user.
Ok, yes, we agree that Sprint sucks on getting the upgrade out.
However, my question still stands. How Do Updates Work? I'm presuming that Google sends the upgrade to HTC, they make it work on their OS. Then they send it to Sprint, which makes their changes to work on their network and then they deliver the update.
Anyone got a clue?
