FIXED Google Wallet Bricked - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

Hey guys i just wanted to let everyone (or anyone that looks here that didnt know already) know that if you get the new OTA or do what i did and get a rom with it (I just flashed Flex's stock with gooodies rom with the new OTA) it fixes Google Wallet if you had bricked it like i did.
So if you forgot to clear google wallet settings before flashing a rom and you bricked flashing a rom with the new ota it restores wallet and it works fine.
I did have to do a reboot for the prepaid card to work and put my 10$ in but its all good again
And if im posting this and its old news then my bad, i did a search and i couldnt find anything on this, and if this is old news then can a mod please delete?
Thanks :good:

Thanks for sharing. So you you had secure element failed and don't anymore after updating to a ROM with 1.22 base? Did you update the hboot, too, or just ROM (I personally never update hboots) ?
Sent from my EVO using xda premium

No way i was already rooted running Flex's ROM so no way i would have updated my hboot i just flashed a rom with the OTA on it
and yeah before hand i had the secure element bricked and after the new ota google wallet works which is fantastic

So maybe we won't have to clear it every time we flash now? That's the one thing that has kept me from really using Wallet . I'm afraid I'm going to forget and brick the NFC. I set it up and just reset it the next day.

that im not sure on ...im looking at this as more of a second chance for me rather than a complete work around...i just have to start remembering to clear settings

I had bricked mine before with the secure element not responding. I went back to stock and updated through OTA. And my wallet is still saing secure element not responding. Any ideas to this? Thanks

I accepted the OTA, and because I was S-OFF I flashed TWRP and then SU via TWRP. I then setup Google Wallet. In my haste to flash the new MEANRom, I forgot to clear Google Wallet settings, but luckily it still works. It seems to me that the OTA might have solved the secure element problem... Don't take my word on that!

I hope this thread gets filled with good news (OP it was the "Secure element not responding" error right? Not the other Wallet errors?) and I hope I am wrong, but like stated in my thread, from all the research I have done there is no fix once it gets corrupted. It has to do with securing financial information and I doubt Google would give out the info as to how to fix it to anyone other than themselves (and even they don't help with this issue).
Anyway this is definitely a thread to keep an eye on and if it gets confirmed I will edit my post with a link to this

Yeah i am seriously hoping that this fixes the issue for everyone but according to the poll at least it seems that not everyones issues were solved. And yes the secure element responding issue was fixed for me after the OTA.

Still busted for me.

i believe when you open it and it says this device is not supported or the secure element failed, and as for moving there are mods to switch the internal and external storage but id recommend just moving the files with a file explorer on the phone to the internal

Yeah, it's not a guarantee that it will brick every time you don't clear data. The only thing we know for sure is that clearing it evades the problem if it would have happened. As hard as I searched for what causes it, I came up empty. No one seems to know what causes it (it has to be something present in non-HTC devices as well, so probably Android related) that triggers it. Your best bet is to just wipe data every time.

Can someone help a noob with this? Just want to make sure I get this right and don't pooch something:
I have GB, rooted, Revolutionary s-off.
- Download the file to /mnt/sdcard/
- Boot into Recovery, and choose "install zip from sdcard"
- select the zip and done?
Is that all?
Edit: Just took the plunge and did this. Thx OP
Thanks, will try this tonight. I was so hoping to get rid of that activation nag.
Thank you very much my man, just what I needed.

This works perfectly.
I accidentally found another way around this... Over the last weekend I somehow enabled my 4G radio. When I opened my browser I was redirected to https://deviceselfservice.sprint.com/dsa/4gportal/welcome.actiob.c... (URL shortened) So I did a little googling and found that you can get one day of free service on 3G/4G by using the promo code Free Day (it is case sensitive)... After a reboot, my tablet was able to activate with no issues and since the trial expiration, I haven't been bugged about it since.
So... If you aren't rooted and don't feel like taking the plunge, you can get rid of the nag screen this way.
been trying that free day code, not working for me.
Googled it as well and it is the right code, but cannot get it to work.
Did you type it all as one word? Capital F and D?
Just did the fix and it worked, quick and easy to do.
Thanks

umm no one else has any problems. You need to be rooted for it to work since it removes a system file. If something is screwed up you did something wrong. There have been hundreds of downloads of this zip and you're the first that's claiming it's not working.

pbanj, I'm pretty sure jwzg was aware of what the ZIP does, but that he (just like me) is curious to learn what the actual internal changes to the system partition are, and if the same effect can be achieved manually e.g. via "adb shell".

What is a great rom that doesn't need bootloader to be unlocked?

I ran the root program that roots the phone then rant the market app that puts a recovery but not unlocked bootloader. I just got the phone and did it last night. I read if the bootloader is unlocked then there is no 4g, not that I used 4g. Or is there a program that does it all like they have for the Evo 4g?
Did you check lokfish's compendium? Whole list of roms. Also check the development threads they'll have "locked" in the title.

yeah
Thanks KTT16, I did end up reading about a couple and tried one that one person said worked smooth. I ended up some error message and RSD'd back to stock and then decided to go all out and figured out how to unlock bootloader, load Clockwork, and then put ICS on. Then went to sleep at 5am =/ hehe. Now I need to set it up the way I need and then shut down my evo and activate my photon=)
Nice work! If you get a chance try cm7.2 and lokfish's rom.

Thanks everyone,
I did that so then the camera started working because it was asking for the sd card, but it still doesn't charge when I plug it into the computer and the computer still doesn't recognize anything. I press the button that says if I want to send files yada yada. The lightening bolt comes on the battery symbol, but not charging or anything else. I'll check the fixes section that KTT16 mentioned in case he meant something else beside the box to check.
I also want to use the calendar app in my evo. It's on a kings speed 3d rom, but that's another thing so I'll figure out the sd card first.

Google wallet issue possible fix.

Okay for the last two days I haven't been able to connect to google wallet or add a google card. I rooted my phone and I see the unsupported devices showing. Tried to add and failed stuck on initializing . I called google wallet they told me there is an issue on there end and it will be fixed wait a couple of days. So today there was an update. I did the update tried again. Didn't work. So I cleared the data and reset the setting in google wallet. Same issue. Then I thought maybe if I unroot and try it maybe it will work. Well in the #SU app u can hide the root so the phone thinks its unrooted. Under enable root . Uncheck it to disable it. Reset and cleared data google wallet. Tried it and it works. Well I'm probably late about this. But I figured I let I guys know maybe it will help someone. Thanks for reading. If it did then hit that thanks. Peace.

they have the evo activation service shut down to try and fix the problems we are having.. so no matter what until they turn them back on you cant activate your account.
The way I did this is if your rooted disable Su. In the Su app. Then go into google wallet reset app in settings. Exit. Then go to applications in settings then go to all on right. Find wallet. Then clear data. Back over to wallet activate again. Setup password. Try to activate prepaid card again. Make sure you take the update in the play store if you didn't before doing any of this. Let me know.

I doubt that this is a possible fix. I unrooted and am still stuck initializing. After installing the Wallet update last night I'm still stuck. I called g wallet customer service again and they said that the update will fix it for some, but they are not finished with all of the maintenence on their servers. Until then (they will email me), G wallet will still be broken for some. I think that this possible fix is just a coincidence.

Query: does this problem only affect those who rooted before using Google Wallet on the stock ROM?
I want to root but I am afraid of losing this functionality. My Wallet works on my stock ROM un-rooted, obviously.
It has nothing to do with being rooted or not... They have turned off the service for new phones to fix the problems.. so if youarent already active.. your probablyout.of luck.

FIX for google wallet activating (updated op)

This is a fix for google wallet to let you login and has been confirmed it will let you buy things after doing it. I am making a new thread so it doesnt get buried in the Google wallet stuck at initializing your device thread. Be sure to thank jkt97401 for finding it and DZLRULZ for doing it and confirming he could buy things again in the thread posted below. I also did it to confirm it works to allow login again.
THIS WILL NOT FIX SECURE ELEMENT BRICKS!
EDIT: this fix has been blocked from my understanding in order to continue to use wallet you have to leave the change and not revert back to the original build prop however you are welcome to try out reverting it.

Go into build.prop and change these values:
ro.product.model=
ro.product.device=
to both equal this: GT-I9300
This makes your phone look like the Sprint galaxy nexus.
Reboot your phone and try to open wallet!
You may have to clear google wallet settings, I had to uninstall wallet and reinstall it after the build.prop change.
Hit the thanks button if this helped!
-------------- PS --------------
The reason I tried this is because I heard Google temporarily blocked the HTC EVO 4G LTE from accessing Google Wallet. I don't know the exact reason why, but this seems to work at least for now.

DUDES! It totally worked. I will be trying a transaction in a few minutes and reporting back. I was sick over this, worried about secure element. I got stuck at 99% resetting the app and eventually had to reboot.
I did what you suggested and it activated, and my $100.21 was still in the prepaid card no problem. Here's EXACTLY what I did to keep out of the unsupported device also:
EDIT: REQUIRES ROOT ACCESS (but not HTC UNLOCK, which I do not have)
-Enable SuperSU
-Use ES File Explorer for root explorer (Settings->Root Explorer, give Superuser permission when asked) -> Mount File System (writable)
-Edit build.prop in /system folder as described above (make a backup also so you can revert after activation!)
-Disable root explorer in ES File Explorer
-Disable SuperSU in SuperSU settings
-Clear data for Wallet in Settings->Apps
-Reboot
-Open Wallet, log in
-Add prepaid card
-Close Wallet
-Go to Android Settings->Apps->Downloaded->Wallet and force stop (hoping to keep it from knowing about the next step which is enable SuperSU to revert build.prop and keep away unsupported device message.)
-Enable SuperSU
-ES File Explorer -> Root Explorer -> Mount System
-In /system folder replace build.prop with the backup I made (or just undo the changes manually if you like.)
-Disable Root Explorer
-Disable SuperSU
-Reboot
-Open Wallet and verify operation
-Profit!
Sorry if this is jumbled, have to get to work but excited that it is fixed and hopefully by reverting build.prop no strange behavior will result!
Thanks again jkt97401!

So without root there is no fix?

and you did this fix? And reverted back to stock build prop? It took mine a minute but it ended up adding it..

Also I was some what scared to do this too but I'm not going to wait forever for them to fix this problem. Since it could take as long of a wait as we may need a OTA. As long as you do what's posted it will work if you do something diff well ymmv... The secure element may be somewhat fickle however I feel ours is not as fickle as the other devices. As I have seen people say they didn't clear it ran ruu and rooted and it still worked...

Negative. After bricking my last evo 4g lte's nfc, i'm being very cautious with anything pertaining to this.
I did call google wallet shortly after posting and they confirmed that it's still not fixed for the evo lte. While this work around may work, it's troubling that google doesn't officially whitelist the device again. There has to be a reason for this. I prefer to wait until it's cleared through official channels.

I'd love to see Google Wallet in Clean Rom

I hate to I make a post like this but I need 10 to comment in dev forums.
I would love to see Google Wallet in the Aroma installer.
Seconded! It'll give me enough reason to reflash

I'd love to see it in any ROM. That's the only reason I'm not flashing other ROMs. I simply don't want to be bothered with adding mods every time.

What? The google wallet mod is only like 45 steps.
I know what you mean. It would be nice to have but I dont think it will happen soon.

You have to switch versions to get it set up so it won't be in any ROM most likely. They could include a script executable to get the job done but that's about it.

it's likely that it won't, because when google wallet gets updated, it's pretty much useless. system will recognize the model of your phone and carrier and you'll be blocked immediately. If this incident happens, people will blame the developer that it doesn't function properly.

Then don't update it. Duh.
We ran into this on the GS3 on AT&T. We had a flashed installed, but then if you pulled the update down from Play it would hose Wallet. It was a simple - don't update Wallet and you had no problems.

You could stick it in there but it would be worthless. You have to edit the build prop while adding your cards then revert back to the original. Wouldnt make much sense to include when you have yo go through this anyways. Just flash the zip its the only extra step.

Have you flashed Google wallet with different rom builds or totally different roms before?? It's not as easy as just simply flashing a couple files like on the S3 and editing the build.prop back, and your done...? I have already had to re-do my wallet and it has been a TEDIOUS experience... I think everyone that has done it a few times could tell ya but it's just different somehow, I think they stepped up security or something with this phone it seems... I can follow a guide to a "T" and it will do something different than my last flash... This has got to be one of the mods that makes me not wanna change roms so frequently like I used to... Don't know what the deal is though? I finally got my current Beans 4 setup ( and fully functional ) with the wallet mod, s-pen sound mod and Perseus kernel so I am happy, but the wallet mod was the longest and most tedious part of upgrading roms IMO. It's a must have for me seeing as tons of places use it around my location and it just makes things simpler. And you never have to worry about forgetting your ( back pocket ) wallet! While I don't really think that it could be included in a rom, I think that there has to be a better way than what it is now...

Then you'll soon or later run into compatibility issue. It may work for a few weeks, but may not work afterwards. It seems like current google apk recognizes our carrier and model via build.prop. The only way to make the google wallet to work as of right now is by temp. changing build.prop to nexus and switching it after overwriting the legit apk with modded one.....and this is not an easy process. So developers can't just integrate the wallet in the rom......it won't work. lmao

Hopefully the physical Google Wallet card and Google Wallet apk to go with get released in the near future so we don't have to deal with this nonsense anymore.
I dicked with the Google Wallet setup and my ass was had man, I screwed up right at the end trying to get the build.prop file to edit properly and when I screwed it up, I got the neverending boot cycle, effectively bricking my device. It sucked ass and required a ton of shenanigans to fix. FML

Thats why you create a backup before flashing anything so it takes about a minute or so to fix it and no worry.
