DO NOT POST IN THE DEVELOPMENT SECTION UNLESS YOU ACTUALLY DEVELOP SOMETHING
bunch of dicks in this place!!!
Sorry that people are jumping at you for posting in the dev section, but there is a reason we have specific forums for different topics and it has to stay organized otherwise no one would know where to find stuff. This is posted pretty explicitly in every forum.
Anyways as far as rooting on a mac, I gave up on trying to install heimdall. For some reason I kept getting a "heimdall.kext not installed properly" error. I ended up using ODIN in boot camp. If you don't have windows, I know you can download a 30 day trial of Parallels 7 to create a virtual machine. They let you use a consumer preview release of Windows 8 for free. I didn't try ODIN in Windows 8 but maybe it could work. Good luck
Thank you!

And watch your language.
Virtualbox is free and can be used on pc, linux, or mac to create virtual machines instead of having to use trials, etc

its not recognizing the phone it says device not found...
Call a friend with a windows PC, everything will be easier.
I don't mean it to bother you, it is a real advice, shouldn't be hard to find someone considering that most people own a windows computer.
I dont get it. Developers constantly provide ODIN instructions when we are blessed with Heimdall.. Its aggrovating...
I use odin, instructions benefit me
Odin works for me
If heimball became more mainstream, id prob use odin still
Why change? It works for me
Sent from a cell tower to the XDA server to you.
I myself have hard-bricked a Vibrant using odin, having to purchase a Riff Box to fix it cause the Jig was no use.. I notice Cyanogen posting Heimdall instructions and citing why. Here. I have used ODIN with success as well.
I think its BS that I need 10 posts to reply in developers forum. So I'm going to spam mY own topic. Sad really... been on here since 2010

2010 huh....and you don't have 10 posts?......
Never needed much help. Anytime I did I usually just googled it. And developers usually post easy to follow instructions

I don't see a question. It looks like you are venting or complaining. What sort of response do you expect?

Its easy to use....
I think Odin is easy to use too...
you just have to click 1, 2, 3 and boom its done....didn't need to use heimdall at all....

Does cygwin has a forum or mailing list?
The point is, it is hardly an android topic. Much less an S3 one.
Don't take the General forum that far.

I think it is absurd that a person like you is on xda who believes that asking development related questions is ridiculous
You should leave xda if you dont like development

Ah. The fine art of irony and the casual reader. I hope you threw a tantrum.
OK, so I want to begin developing Android ROM's. I have the necessary technical knowledge and I have access to Ubuntu 64-bit with more than 100gb of Free disk space.
Where do I start?
How do I edit Android, I.e - theme it, change text etc.
Thanks.

Xda university? Ive been wandering this forum for 3 years and this is the 1st time ive ever seen anyone mention this...
Is his defense, the search feature in either the app or website both kinda suck.
Not very intuitive at all...its easier to Google it then click back to the xda link than to try an find it here....just sayin.

Yes I have been using this for years too and never attempt searching on the site or app. Google will help my the site brings up non related content. Also first on xda university. I need to enroll. Where does the line start and how much is tuition? Guess I will have to Google it and see what it is all about.

Kinda guessed that the reply would be "Use the search". I haven't yet seen a guide that shows screenshots of what the code actually does. I.e: before a code change the ui looks like this [Insert screenshot here] and after the code change a Ui looks like this [Insert screenshot here].
I've seen developers create features for their ROMs, like quick settings in notifications and stuff like that. Building the ROM is one thing but adding features is another. I wish their was a complete guide out their.
A lot of xda threads are becoming more like court cases nowadays. I see people with feature requests and then the developer just rudely says "Thanks for Sharing!" And takes no notice as if what someone said was pointless.

That would probably be because it has been asked a few million times (yes, it's an exaggeration but I think you get my point).
A lot of people will be very helpful if you come in here and show that you tried to figure out something on your own. I've read all of this or searched Google and the site and haven't found the info. However, when you come here and ask a question that has been posed over and over again you can start to get a bit of an attitude. It's generally because you have shown no initiative to look or get the info yourself.
Would the guide you want be helpful? Sure would. It's not though so one has to a lot of digging to get the info. That is one of the ways you learn how to do things here at XDA. Then, after learning one can go out and write the guide that is missing.
Here is something for you. A thread explaining how to use Google to search XDA specifically. It's located in a specific device forum but is good for everything (and no, I have never owned a Hermes. I found it by searching ).

I would really like to learn to write software for androids. What programs will I need to write and test software? I have basic programming knowledge from taking c++ and java classes while in high school. I am running Mint 15 on my computer so the windows tutorial didn't help me out really. Still kind of new to Linux.
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using xda app-developers app
Knowing c++ and java will help a lot, go to androids development site and download the SDK with eclipse, learn eclipse, do the hello world tutorial, watch some videos, and read a lot! Learn github and repo, decompile some apps, see what they're made of. Download a ROM from source, see how its built. Tons of threads on xda and elsewhere on the web, try to start out small and work your way up, that's the best advice I can give... Read a lot, and search a lot
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
Go to youtube, search for android bootcamp posted by Marakana. Its an old video but it will give you the basics of getting an android app running.
Alright thanks for the tips! I'm going to check it out later today and can't wait to check out some ROMs. I'm running cm10.1 in my DNA atm so I think I'll check out that one first
