its not recognizing the phone it says device not found...

Call a friend with a windows PC, everything will be easier.
I don't mean it to bother you, it is a real advice, shouldn't be hard to find someone considering that most people own a windows computer.

[Q] Why Odin when theres Heimdall?

I dont get it. Developers constantly provide ODIN instructions when we are blessed with Heimdall.. Its aggrovating...
I use odin, instructions benefit me
Odin works for me
If heimball became more mainstream, id prob use odin still
Why change? It works for me
Sent from a cell tower to the XDA server to you.
I myself have hard-bricked a Vibrant using odin, having to purchase a Riff Box to fix it cause the Jig was no use.. I notice Cyanogen posting Heimdall instructions and citing why. Here. I have used ODIN with success as well.
I think its BS that I need 10 posts to reply in developers forum. So I'm going to spam mY own topic. Sad really... been on here since 2010

2010 huh....and you don't have 10 posts?......
Never needed much help. Anytime I did I usually just googled it. And developers usually post easy to follow instructions

I don't see a question. It looks like you are venting or complaining. What sort of response do you expect?

So this is basically "let me create an off topic thread in a Q&A section so I can get my ten posts to annoy the dev"
Sent from my SGH-T959 using xda app-developers app
Its easy to use....
I think Odin is easy to use too...
you just have to click 1, 2, 3 and boom its done....didn't need to use heimdall at all....

Best way is to load Windows on your mac or go to a friends house that has windows and do the Odin stuff there. After that you're good to go, you can install the sdk on a mac and flash clockwork recovery.
Thanks alot! Ill be sure to look up some tutorials!

Dumb Queston but Please answer Respectfully

I just "updated" my Galaxy Note by using Odin to install the new leak 4.0.4 and was wondering if somebody could point me in the best direction for rooting my device. Not a "noob" but I'm new to Samsung in general. I don't want to brick my device or possibly mess it up in any way. Also I would like to be able to install further releases of leaked roms and root again. Any advice and information would be helpful. Thank you

You are respectfully asked to read the stickies that answer your dumb question
as far as i know you need to flash clockworkrecovery odin version, after that you can use cwm to flash superuser file that will give you root. read "official" leak thread, it has been covered few times.
Thank you. Figured that would be the response lol I'll do that

Everything begins with ODIN. Flash Leak thru ODIN then flash CWM recovery thru ODIN. Then download the SU 307.zip and flash thru CWM. That is all you need to do to root your phone. You should be able to do everything in less than 15-20mins.

I understand why some people are annoyed at post that could be searched for but I think we waste more space condemning them over and over. If one person says something i don't think three or four more is neccesary

DO NOT POST IN THE DEVELOPMENT SECTION UNLESS YOU ACTUALLY DEVELOP SOMETHING
bunch of dicks in this place!!!
Sorry that people are jumping at you for posting in the dev section, but there is a reason we have specific forums for different topics and it has to stay organized otherwise no one would know where to find stuff. This is posted pretty explicitly in every forum.
Anyways as far as rooting on a mac, I gave up on trying to install heimdall. For some reason I kept getting a "heimdall.kext not installed properly" error. I ended up using ODIN in boot camp. If you don't have windows, I know you can download a 30 day trial of Parallels 7 to create a virtual machine. They let you use a consumer preview release of Windows 8 for free. I didn't try ODIN in Windows 8 but maybe it could work. Good luck
Thank you!

And watch your language.
Virtualbox is free and can be used on pc, linux, or mac to create virtual machines instead of having to use trials, etc

Is rooting safe? What are the worse thing that could happen?

Just wanna know the hazards of rooting.

Its relatively safe. Just as long as you do research and know 100% what you are doing.
The risk, like almost anything is a brick and bootloop.
Please take some of my advice and avoid stress and hassel. Research and understand how to root then before rooting, research and learn how to recover your device from a bootloop, soft brick etc. Only when confident and you have all necessary info then proceed to root. Once rooted immediately back up your efs folder numerous times in different locations PC laptop dropbox etc. Do this and avoid hassle i didn't and got a bootloop. I panicked thought it was broke put phone in washing machine to hide the fact i had rooted it and claimed on insurance (£50 excess). With proper research could of fixed it myself in 5 mins. Happy flashing .

Look at the link in my signature for a very safe rooting method (method 1). It is one of the less intrusive ways

With the method below, you won't get the yellow triangle or trip the binary counter.

I would try cf root, or at least look into it. It seems to be very popular and almost hard to hurt your device.

Rooting took me ages to sort of understand coming from one click jailbreaking and I don't pretend I still understand it but the rooting process itself is simple!

yes rooting will always look as simple as it is, so bearing the same in mind and when people rush to do things without proper homework is when the rooting starts troubling them for sure
