Its relatively safe. Just as long as you do research and know 100% what you are doing.
The risk, like almost anything is a brick and bootloop.

Please take some of my advice and avoid stress and hassel. Research and understand how to root then before rooting, research and learn how to recover your device from a bootloop, soft brick etc. Only when confident and you have all necessary info then proceed to root. Once rooted immediately back up your efs folder numerous times in different locations PC laptop dropbox etc. Do this and avoid hassle i didn't and got a bootloop. I panicked thought it was broke put phone in washing machine to hide the fact i had rooted it and claimed on insurance (£50 excess). With proper research could of fixed it myself in 5 mins. Happy flashing .

Look at the link in my signature for a very safe rooting method (method 1). It is one of the less intrusive ways

With the method below, you won't get the yellow triangle or trip the binary counter.

Dumb Queston but Please answer Respectfully

I just "updated" my Galaxy Note by using Odin to install the new leak 4.0.4 and was wondering if somebody could point me in the best direction for rooting my device. Not a "noob" but I'm new to Samsung in general. I don't want to brick my device or possibly mess it up in any way. Also I would like to be able to install further releases of leaked roms and root again. Any advice and information would be helpful. Thank you

You are respectfully asked to read the stickies that answer your dumb question
as far as i know you need to flash clockworkrecovery odin version, after that you can use cwm to flash superuser file that will give you root. read "official" leak thread, it has been covered few times.
Thank you. Figured that would be the response lol I'll do that

Everything begins with ODIN. Flash Leak thru ODIN then flash CWM recovery thru ODIN. Then download the SU 307.zip and flash thru CWM. That is all you need to do to root your phone. You should be able to do everything in less than 15-20mins.

Pretty much any method is fairly streamline now. There's a root toolkit that does all the work for you, all you have to do is enter in a number that relates to the command when you run it. Be certain you are using the proper root method for your carrier and follow all instructions carefully.
Tripping the flash counter happens when you flash your recovery via odin. It triggers the built in counter in download mode to show that you have "tampered" with the device, and therefor can be refused warranty work. To avoid this, use either ADB through command line, or terminal emulator.

I agree that there is a lot of posts all over the place but to all fairness, there is posts in this same section http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1722344 that shows you exactly what to do to root.
I agree that you NEED TO READ. If you aren't willing to do the research you're going to have an expensive brick instead of an amazing phone running Jelly Bean roms or whatever you choose.
Also, don't just rely on one thread. Read multiple so you see opinions and suggestions.

Don't think it matters if you trip the flash counter any more there's an app to get rid of it Triangle Away. Also be careful many people have Lost there Imei# and now have a very expensive mp3 player. Might be a good idea to wait until they figure out how to back up imei first.

I think it's funny how quick everyone is to tell people to read - When there are likely many threads that you've started that a google search could've solved in 5 minutes. Yes reading can help solve most of his issues, but when you have the possibility of turning a 600$ phone completely worthless, it doesn't hurt to ask questions.

It is pretty straight forward. Make sure you have the drivers installed before rooting. In short, follow the instructions to the point. If you are worried about tripping your flash counter, there is a specific root method you follow. If you do not care, then you can use the tool kit. If you look through the posts in the development section, you will easily find it. PM me if you need help.

Flash the stock 2.3.4 with root and then flash siyah or entropy's kernel for CWM. There's your spoon feeding for the day
Sent from team Pirate! Using Tapatalk 2
Questions belong in the Q&A forum, not general.
Many of the methods will not work. You can flash a custom kernel which injects root (increments the flash counter.) There is a rooted stock ICS in the original development section (does not increment the flash counter.)
No no no! Creepy, they don't want the EASY way dude. Have u learned nothing? They want to update with kies. So they can make a thread about not being able to update with kies. Then make another about the correct drivers and how kies sucks in general. Then they wanna use that for 2 days , find out how bad it sucks, then try and flash back to something else with Odin. Except they can't get Odin to work. New thread time again! Then once they get that spoon feeding goodness they wanna Odin back to stock and flash a new ROM. Yes there are many links for rooting on that page. Can be quite confusing and not one tutorial that I saw which was simply laid out. You don't need to flash a kernel to root. You don't need to worry about the flash counter. You simply need to install CWM with odin and install superuser with CWM Go here and follow the directions.

Hanging out in the IRC room I see approximately 1-2 per day. Always the same thing, not following directions. Make sure you copy and paste the commands DO NOT TRY TO TYPE THEM YOURSELF. I see people brick all the time because they typed the commands themselves and missed something. Also if you see anything that even SLIGHTLY resembles an error, go to the IRC room and ask for help. DON"T REBOOT. Sorry for yelling.

I know you could root the Galaxy S3 without unlocking the bootloader. Does anyone know if I could do the same on the DNA? I want to use some apps that require root access but I don't want to void my warranty by unlocking.

And don't worry about your warranty, they don't check it.

Alright, I hope they don't if I need to use the warranty. Thanks for the response.
