[Q] GQ Magazine App Problems - TouchPad Themes and Apps

Hi all -- long-time lurker. Thank you for this resource!
I have an HP Touchpad running Android ICS via Cyanogenmod 9. I recently downloaded the GQ Magazine android app after subscribing to their digital format for tablets. The app opens fine and I am able to download monthly issues with no problem. However, when I try to view the magazines, they immediately crash and I get the standard "Unfortunately, GQ has stopped" error.
I am not very good with troubleshooting -- all I have done is restart and reload the app. Do any of you have any thoughts or recommendations on what I can try in order to get this thing working properly?
Thanks.

you should try to fix permissions thru recovery....also do some wiping (cache and dalvik), I hope it helps you.:good:

I'll give the wiping a try - thanks!
As for the "permissions thru recovery," I'm afraid I am not sure what that means exactly. Can you please elaborate?
**EDIT**
I figured out how to "fix" permissions in recovery mode and wiped both cache and dalvik as suggested, but the problem persists. The app will download fine, open fine and I can download the magazine issues just fine as well. When I try to view the issue files, however, the app crashes, every time. I wonder if it may be a conflict with the Touchpad's screen and the way the app is supposed to display (say, on a Kindle Fire)?

That would be my guess. I contacted GQ a while back, asking if they were going to bring their app to the rest of Android, and they said it was being worked on and to continually check their site for updates. So hopefully it'll be brought over and we won't have any issues with the TP's screen.

What if you go through the Play Store instead? They have a magazine section now and GQ is in there. I dont know if you would have to subscribe again or not though.

We would indeed, unfortunately. I checked that out as soon as it was released, Google neither offers free copies nor discounts to those customers with existing print subscriptions. In essence, we'd be paying for two subscriptions.

[Q] No downloads from Market

Hi all,
First of all I didn't want to start a new thread but I already followed all advises when people asked about this issue and had no luck, don't know what else to do.
I got my new gtablet four days ago (not a woot) and have been trying different roms (TNT 4.3.1 / Vegan 5.1) with no luck in the android market. Of course I tried the fixes for the market, clearing cache, data, even re-partitioning to make sure partition was 2048 | 0, turning off firewall in my router... EVERYTHING! On the stock ROM (3588) I can download and install apps from the market with no issues. In TNT lite 4.3.2 (my actual ROM) I can download things from the browser, but not from the market. As soon as I click to install, it keeps in "starting download..." and could be there for hours without downloading a single bit.
Is anybody experimenting the same (frustration, haha)? How can I identify where the problem could be?
Thanks in advanece!
mmmm.... ideas?
Thanks!
This has been happening to me on and off with both updates and new downloads for the past week or so. Usually I can kickstart it by canceling it and selecting it again. Some seemed to be more difficult than others.
+1. I usually stop the download and kick start it again. After a few times, it usually starts the download.
Hey, first thanks for the replies!
I try stop & reconnect all the time even with different applications but I have no luck. Another strange thing is that I cannot connect to google talk. It always give me the error that it cannot connect with the server. I'm pointing this as I know that the market and gtalk are close related. Does that rings a bell?

That could be a network or server issue. Can you use the web based market?
If that works try the market fix again. There have been times that I had to do that three or four times to get it working correctly.

Hello there, and thanks for stopping by! What you mean by web based market? Whenever I type android market on the web browser, it goes to https://market.android.com/ but for downloading, jumps to the market application and the neverending "starting download" starts again Nevertheless I was using without any issues the limited market that comes with the stock ROM! That's just to discard issues with my internet connection. Also, tried on a different connection and everything stays the same.

Any time I've had anything like this a clear cache or data wipe took care of it. Very odd. Maybe Dalvik Cache?
Mine did the same thing and I found my date/time was reset. Setting the proper time fixed it instantly. Downloading would hang in the market but dl'ing an apk from getjar worked fine. Good luck!

Did you ever get this issue resolved? My friend as the same issue with downloads not completing and I'm at a loss as to how to fix it?
Thanks.
I'm seeing this exact same issue (including the Google Talk Authentication failure) on VEGAn-TAB 5.1.
Has anyone found a resolution for this? Thanks!
I found my issue -
I didn't have a gmail account. Without a gmail account Google Talk doesn't seem to work and the Marketplace uses Talk.
Symptoms:
Google Talk autentication failure on boot up
Marketplace would not download, stuck on "Starting download"
Resolution
Created new email account [email protected]
Logged into Google Talk through PC app to set-up account
Wipped all user data from tablet through clockwork
Added gmail account in settings
Had to do market fix again, but after that everything worked

[Q] Words with Friends broken since TW Update

Ever since I updated WWF after the TW update, I get an error connecting to the servers and can't play any games. I have tried a forced close and clearing cache. anyone else having problems with this? If so, does anyone have any solutions?
Thanks

I had to update in the market place to fix mine. Works perfect now.

I played last night and everything worked great, even got push notifications for the first time. WWF definitely needs a paid version for android to get rid of those annoying adds.
That and I can receive chat messages but I can't send them.

after doing the update from the market, i was able to send messages. I couldn't do anything without it FC or giving me network error message from the version that was loaded with Touchwiz.
How did you guys get the version from the market to update the TW version? When i go out to the Market "Open" is the only option I get.
when you go into settings>applications what version do you have installed? I am running 3.61
Mine shows up as 3.59. Funny thing is that the Market version says 3.61 but "open" is the only option I get.

Try clearing the cache for your market and see if it will come up
Mine is version 3.59 as well.
Same issue when I go to the market.
I just emailed the dev.
When are these adds going to be dealt with?

That did not work for me.
I removed my stock version and installed it again from the market. I pulled and zip the apk. Extract and install from from your sdcard.
I can't try it right now, but I will check it out later. Thanks for taking the time!

Naked, work was blocking the download. After getting impatient I tried logging into the Android market on my PC and forcing an install on my tablet. It worked like a charm! I am now running 3.61. I am testing it now, but I have yet to get an error.

Sweet, glad you got it working. Good idea on doing the web page market and forcing the upgrade. I'll keep that in mind in the future.
I have seen often programs not able to update properly when they are located /system/app. Since the it was part of the upgrade to TW, they have it located there.
The install from Market worked great for me as well.
Never knew you could do that.

TripleTapper, can you please explain more? Now do you "force install" from the market? It just tells me that my Nook Color is incompatible with the app, and the buttons are greyed out.
Thanks.
I just opened the Market using the browser on my PC. When I do that and search for Words for Friends I click on install. It then gives me an option to install onto my various Android devices by selecting it from a pull down. My Galaxy Tab comes up as Samsung GT-P7510.
Words has been working flawlessly now! : )

Mine wasn't working either... it was installed as soon as I logged into my google account and all my apps from my SGS2 were funneled onto the TPrime. It kept crashing out as soon as launched.
I ended up just searching the market for it and re-installing it seemed to do the trick. The menus are choppy as hell but it works.

In the tablet settings enable something like "force hardware acceleration." I think it is in the developer section. If you can't find it, I can look at it latter and give a better explanation. That should speed up the scrolling.
Enjoy!

i know its offtopic, but i want to ask if someone from outside US managed to create account on netflix? i was able to get on netflix.com using VPN, but problem is with creating account - they accept only us paypal accounts, and my credit card was rejected too (surprisingly by my own bank - they told me that netflix is a scam site {WTF}) is there any way to get it working?

Try a service like Entropay. Create a credit card with a US address and use it for Netflix.
they want scan of my ID, passport and driving licence got email immediately after registering there.
ive ran out of ideas, guess i will give up on it but thanks for help
----
edit: IT WORKS ) ive registered with my real slovakian address and credit card, they asked me to send them ids, so i did. After about an hour my virtual card was OK. And it was accepted by netflix without problem... what an awesome stuff youve got there in US im impressed. (btw hulu doesnt work)
thanks for highjacking my thread....guess i'll never get my netflix working...woe is me
If you are rooted and own titanium backup you could try freezing the app and installing the one from the market which should install as a data app instead of a system app.
Have you tried clearing the data/cache in the app setting by going settings>apps and scrolling to netfix? I can't recall the exact location since I am at work.
Does it give the same status even if you don't have any updates installed?
ive tried many netflix apps, but this one works for sure. try it, maybe it will work for you too. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/20911810/Netflix_1.6.0.apk
When i try to install the above apk, i get an error message that says an existing app with a conflicting signature exists...which makes sense asi am unable to uninstall the original netflix. Seriously im having a hard time believing im the only one experiencing ts problem?
OP are you rooted? Uninstall the netflix update, then try deleting the Netflix.apk from /system/app with root explorer, reboot, reinstall netflix from the market.
have you done a factory data reset since you upgraded to ICS? I had a lot of quirky bugs right after I upgraded but thy all disappeared with a wipe. Asus really should have included that as part of the upgrade.
anyways, google can backup your apps if you let it, so all you have to do is re-define your settings. I was done and ready to go within an hour of my wipe.
hopefully you dont have to do that but that will probly fix it. good luck!
Agree, a factory reset can fix all kinds of software issues and with Google App Backup it is easier than ever to recover.

After rooting I'm using home manager to go between B&N and AWD screens since am used to the B&N interface. plus i had already purchased a handful of books and apps b4 i decided to root.
Now the problem. so far everything has been working great with the exception of one book. whenever i try to open it, i get "the application FavaLauncher (process.app.com.book.fava.FavaApp) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again"
I've tried cleaning cache and wiping data on "favalauncher" and cant get any results.
help?

Sorry for the delay. What format is the book in? You might be able to use another app to read the book.
EDIT: And I'm going to take a stab in the dark here, is it "Thank You Notes 2" by Jimmy Fallon? If it's not, let me which one. I can try to get you a clean copy or try to reproduce it on my end.

Listfinite - beta wearable list app

I made a shopping list app that sync from your phone to your watch, I would love feedback on it because I do not know anyone other than myself that has an android wear device. The link to the app is https://play.google.com/store/apps/d....anylist&hl=en . Please keep in mind that this app is in beta and not all features have been implemented yet, as of now the watch is not syncing changes back to the phone and the watch U.I. is not awesome. The mobile part of the app can be run completely independent of a wearable device. To delete items simply swipe them off the screen, to create click the plus icon on the mobile app. Let me know if you have any questions/ suggestions! Thanks! I also posted this over in the android wear forum.

Hey guys I thought I had subscribed to get updates on my thread but apparently I didn't. I looked at what you guys were saying and I don't know why its crashing like it is. I had it completely working before I uploaded to the store so maybe I uploaded an old apk or something. I will try to fix whatever is causing it to crash this weekend. Thanks for the feedback, I will update the thread when to let you know when it should be fixed!
Also I have quite a few other features planned for the app such as a list of favorited items to add with one click, but I will have to squeeze in updates around school and my internship. Let me know if you have any other comments/suggestions/complaints!
Bug Update
I fixed the bug that caused the application to crash on the wearable when you click on a category and updated my email preferences on the thread to get updates. I will push the update to the store now!

Hey sorry about the delay, I just got back in classes so I have been super busy. I found a bug in my manifest that was making multiple launcher icons, how were you trying to launch the app (through a wear launcher, or using the notification)? I'm attatching the apk here if you want to test it. It will also be included on the next update to the app on the play store.
