What is CWM TOUCH? - Galaxy S III Q&A, (US Carriers)

I used the QCOM loader "GSIII Toolkit" to load the CWM on my phone. I chose the third option which loads "cwm touch". Is it what i think it is? When your in CWM you can actually touch the screen to move the cursor and actions?
I haven't actually used it yet because there's no custom roms yet and i'm quite satisfied so far with the stock rom. I wanted root for Titanium and file access and to be able to install adfree on my phone, plus all the other advantages of having root to control the phone.

Yes... Cwm touch is just like the "plain old" cwm...except you touch the screen.... I would suggest 5.8.4.7 for now....

Clockworkmod doesn't work

I have hboot 1.5 and used fastboot to flash the clockworkmod 5.0.2.0. shooter image, but whenever I try to boot into recovery my phone sits at the HTC screen for a while then reboots into the OS. TWRP works fine, but I prefer CWM. Anyone else have his problem/ figure out how to fix it? I have also tried using rom manger to flash cwm, but the same thing happens.

Have you gone to Settings>Power and Unchecked the Fastboot option?
Unless there have been some new developments, only older CWMR versions work on EVO3D. I use 4.0.1.4

Where are all the CWM defenders now?
*Anytime ANYONE has an issue with it, they scatter.
*Anytime ANYONE has something negative to say about it, they get all up in arms and butthurt trying to defend its effectiveness.
This OP has just provided another ^^^ post stating that it is, in fact, not working correctly...
Deja Vu all over again.
By the way, OP, you state that TWRP "works fine", but you "prefer" CWM...
(Why would you prefer something that doesn't work over something that has been proven to work time and time again?)
CWM hanging?
I've got another problem with CWM. Planning to install a custom ROM on a Blade and booted into CWM ( v5.0.2.0 ) and it looks OK, gives me the menu but if I select any option it just hangs at the "hat" image. If I press the phone's menu button I can get back to CWM menu and select another option with the same result but can't go anywhere else.
The phone will only boot into CWM and I can't access the phone via USB.
Is it bricked? Any ideas how I can get out of this?

[Recovery] ClockWorkMod - Touch and Touchless

Koushik basically has the option of making recovery porting easier, since there's no CWM here really, I've built both a touch and non touch versions.
Basically these are just the img files, I prefer not to make a flashable zip until some test it to confirm both work, I have a few ideas to build better versions, though I don't really see the need at the moment to implement though with 4EXT around, it's still good to have options.
Flash these recoveries manually or via hasoon's tool:
CWM Touch IMG
Server link: http://jenkins.cyanogenmod.com/job/recovery/6430/
CWM Touchless IMG
Server link: http://jenkins.cyanogenmod.com/job/recovery/6428/
Credits:
Koushik for making his server open and customizing it to build/port cwm using a stock recovery.
HTC for the stock recovery [lol]
Its highly recommended to use this only if you have S OFF

what i don't understand with 4ext is that u need superuser to install it, but u need a custome recovery to install superuser, seems like dead loop? correct me if im wrong.
Install 4ext recovery first. Then if you want you can install the control application on Android which requires superuser.
Also, is this the latest version with incremental back ups?

You don't need superuser to install 4EXT, it can be installed via fastboot like any other recovery.

CWM has incremental backups now? All I can tell you is that it's the latest version for both touch and regular cwm recovery.
I was able to load the CWM Touch without S-Offing and flash my first Amaze ROM (successfully is TBD though)
How do you flash these via fastboot? Do I have to rename them?
Can someone tell me pros and cons of both 4ext recovery and cwm touch. Which one is better? I have 4ext, no issues so not sure if I should change it.

I did...tried to download the latest CWM from there...and flash it using ROM manager, but it seems to give some sort of error .....
opening package....
then...file not found or something....
BTW just having ROM manager setup to use recovery enough? I do have the normal reboot into recovery options etc (long press of power button)...
Also when I open the ROM manager, i get a message saying there is an update available for clockworkmod recovery...i press ok and nothing happens...dont know how to update it....
Maybe a bad download. Did you try downloading it a second time and trying?
As far as possible, stick to using the long-press power method to get into recovery. And do you have a custom kernel? Even most ROMs now give you the option to install a kernel which comes with an inbuilt version of CWM recovery. So unless you're using a really outdated version of CWM, don't worry about upgrading it.

:good:
Am using the the supernexus JB build 4 along with its custom kernel which doesnt have CWM recovery...
Was earlier on AOKP JB with Siyah kernel which had the CWM built in like you said....
But i guess i am losing no functionality by not upgrading so its fine I guess like you said....as long as I can make back-ups and restore them and flash new stuff....
BTW I did download more than once (tried both touch version and non touch versions...so guess not an issue with the download)....

Is ROM Manager part of CWM? Want dual boot w/Amon Ra.

I read that you can use ROM Manager to dual boot so I went to the Play Store to download it but it seems to be part of CWM? Or did I get that wrong?
I'm used to Amon Ra and don't want to switch off it. Can I dual boot?

ROM Manager doesn't play well with our device so shouldn't be used (CWM is apart of Rom Manager). There is an app out on the play store that lets you dual boot I think it's called Boot Manager

Even still I heard boot manager causes lots of problems on our phone as well, such as aosp to sense. The memory partitions are switches so when you try and boot thru boot manager itll give you a bootloop(cuz it reads the wrong partition).. I just know this from someone else's problem, I havent personally experienced it.. but if your using amonRa you can just make two seperate backups of the roms your wanting to use and restore your nandroid when you wanna change to the other.. this takes alil longer obviously but much safer and easier on your phone..

Sounds like friend is not setup right because the boot manager app creates it's own partitions on and runs from the sd card. Have used it since it first came out and runs better than ever. Just waiting for them to complete port for S3 and will be rocking it again.
Boot manager works great on this phone. It is officially supported by the developer.
But you can't dual boot an AOSP and Sense ROM. Has to be two of the same.

Why is CWM touch recovery not used for I777 firmware?

I've seen it (and even installed it temporarily) but it's never included when I flash a new kernel/rom.
Just wondering...

AJK uses a touch based recovery.

I have AJK 4.5 installed and my recovery is "CM-based recovery v6.0.1.2-Siyah". Is that what it should be?
It has navigation keys (which I only just noticed lol) but it's not fully touch. I installed a touch version of CWM from CWM site. It was temporary and yes I realize that was probably stupid but I really liked it!

AJK recovery is fully touch. Along the bottom of your screen are the touch keys. From left to right:
1 goes Up
1 goes Down
1 is for Back
1 is for Enter or Select
Additionally, you can scroll between options by using your finger on the screen itself, and you can select by swiping to the right - and go back by swiping to the left.
Thanks AJ. I really appreciate knowing that! I was using vol/power lol.
I don't want to be a pain but I'm really curious why you don't use CWM touch recovery.
Edit: I rebooted my phone into recovery just so I could play with it. Sweet!

The reason I cannot change recoveries (until I get around to building a custom recovery, that is) is because of the customization of AJK. There is always the possibility that a user can change something that will leave their phone unable to boot. If that happens I want them to have the ability to reset profiles from within recovery.
Thanks! Nice of you to explain!
