So I see that the new euphoria ROM has the touch recovery. I have not personally tested it, but I assume that it works like it should.
I'm now curious if this recovery is able to work with other ics roms, like icz, Miui, etc.

Touch Recovery is kernel implemented from what I understand. I know for a fact that the newest subZero kernel has it implemented and subZero is compatible with ICZ, Miui v4, and most other ICS roms (however as you may know for Miui v4 you have to flash it over the Glitch kernel).

the haptic buttons are touch, you can use those to navigate the recovery menu, it is not full touch screen recovery (in the truest sense)
Yup, haptic buttons are the controls...
Menu = down
Home = main menu
Back = up
Search = select
...or something like that.

I got the touch recovery on the latest Euphoria and I think the main thing going for it is how much better looking it is. I think I still prefer the physical buttons tho.

yeah same here. I went back to normal, I don't wanna accidentally during a important flash just press the search button and then it just cancels everything etc. That would be horrible. Physical buttons = safe.
thanks everyone for the suggestions on the kernels etc.
Touch recovery flashable zip! http://db.tt/huHW1JMN
The ****ty thing about this is as soon as you reboot and go back into recovery it's gone.
Also kiss 5.1 has it implemented

I got a Galaxy SII last week from a friend. I'm very familiar with rooting, flashing, CWM, etc. First I flashed Siyah kernel I believe, and it gave me CWM but I got bootloops so I went back to 4.0.3 stock. Then I flashed codeworkx's kernel for CWM through Odin. Got stuck at galaxy SII screen so once again I went back to stock. All I want is to get SlimBean flashed or maybe CM, but I can't get a stable kernel flashed correctly. Anyone feel like helping me out?
Edit: Also, before someone asks me to check my model number, I know I have an SII (i777) unlocked running stock rooted ICS 4.0.3

Install kernel with cwm. Don't boot back into os.
Boot into cwm.

BS. Impossible unless the flash was bad. CWM is built into kernel. Kernel and OS only matter if planning on booting into OS. You can flash a GB kernel while on a JB ROM and have no issues getting into CWM.
Issue is on your end. Odds are, your holding it wrong. heh the one good thing the iphone has done is that phrase
No, it would boot cwm just fine but cwm wouldn't work. Couldn't select anything on either kernel. NEAK worked just fine. I know how to boot recovery, I'm not a noob.

Noob is just a word describing someone new to doing something. If you say you aren't, we heard u the first time. Also i'd like to know exactly what kernels you're saying aren't working (the kernel contains the recovery which is what yer saying isn't working for u) so I can flash them myself.

They're in the OP. @Ninja, I could navigate the menu, but I couldn't select anything. Example: select "mounts and storage" or whatever it's called exactly. Screen would flash and put cursor back at the top selection. I tried every submenu, and tried selecting them each multiple times. Either way, I ended up flashing NEAK and it worked perfect. Now I have AOKP so I'm good.

Perhaps the non functional cwm experiences, resulted from an incompatible kernel? International, for example? I've never screwed up a flash, outside of forgetting gapps once or twice back in the day, so I'm just speculating.

Ohhh, I think I get what OP is talking about.
Sometimes, on older kernels, if you hold or bump the volume buttons it screws up the selector button. I would have this problem occassionally, rebooting CWM fixes it.
OP, tell me exactly how you are booting into CWM. Are you using the "hold all three buttons down" method? If so, try releasing the volume buttons earlier. I think holding both vol buttons while CWM is up disables the power key selector. This sounds like what's happening here, it isn't a bad kernel issue just some weird glitch they all seem to have.

You have stock recovery, you need to Flash a custom one like clockworkmod to be able to take nandroid backups and flash roms.
If you are on cwm, then just choose the install zip from sd card option and browse for your zip..

if you boot your device into recovery mode (power + volume up), does it say CWM recovery 5.x.x.x?
if it does, then you have a custom kernel.
if not, flash a custom kernel. use rj's kernel if you have a physical home button or entropy's kernel if you have a capacitative home button.
If you really want to see a drastic difference difference, try cm 10 or ParanoidAndroid.

To flash any of these roms, just copy the appropriate zip to your internal storage and reboot into recovery.
Then:
1. Wipe Data/Factory reset
2. Wipe Cache
3. Advanced > Wipe Dalvik Cache
4. Install zip > from internal sd card
5. wait and enjoy.
Also, i would highly recommend you check out http://xda-university.com

Currently have TWR recovery I flashed using goomanager but have been hearing bad thing about it. Can I just download Rom Manager from the play store and use it to flash clockwork or do I need to us another way to flash it ? Thanks !
If TWRP works fine for you then who cares what other people say or think about. I only run TWRP and have no issues with it.
Don't just go by what other people say, check out some videos on YouTube of ClockworkMod and see if it's for you. Very recently, an official CWM build appears to have become available so if you want to use that, it should be as simple as downloading ROM Manager and doing recovery setup.
I havent used TWR to flash anything yet just used it to to a backup of my stock rooted rom. Thanks for the replys.

I've ran both on multiple devices and i also prefer twrp. It's laid out nicer. Being able to wipe cache and dalvik in one shot or at least in one menu screen is way more convenient than them being separate options on separate screens.

Today I picked up my new GS4 and it comes with MDK (sw ver on box ends in MDK). I want to root right away and probably unlock in a few days, so I have a question.
Do I need to activate before I do anything or can I just turn it on for the first time and root? I ask because I have heard that it will try to update as soon as I power up the first time and I do not want ME7.
I have searched a bit and wasn't sure so I am in a holding pattern. I have found the rooting directions and have everything together.
Thanks!
You can go ahead and root. You can put your phone in airplane mode so it wont download anything. Afterwards youll have to disable it so you can update root binaries. The update file is a hundred megabytes so youll have time and by chance if you get the whole file you can postpone it. After rooting I recommend freezing/renaming/deleting sdm.apk to get rid of the update notifications. This will also kill the update process as well so you dont have to worry about it updating your phone afterwards.
Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk 2
I don't think you have to activate but even if you do, just root your phone now like right this second root and install a custom recovery. I activated my phone, deferred the update and then got root and installed twrp.
P.s. incase you accidently press accept on the ota, pull your batt and come back here for help.

It doesn't have any affect on 4g.
That's a nice change. Thanks!!
One final question before I become a serial flasher trying a few ROMs that just interest me so much. Which recovery? I want to eventually run Cyanogenmod, that is, unless I like something else better than CM (it was hard to beat on my Photon). Should I use the one I can install through ROM Manager, TWRP, or a CWM based recovery (such as the one linked on CM's webpage)? Whichever it is needs to work installing CM.
TWRP is cool, but wasn't working for downloading as of yesterday (for me). I used Rom Manager since it was easy, quick, and I'm very used to them. I always hesitate a bit on CWM just because I remember some bricking issues on the SGS3, however, it never happened to me.
Cool, Thanks! I'm familiar with CWM but for some reason I don't have the same good feel with the GS4 as I did with other devices. I guess I'll go with Rom Manager.
Let the flashing begin!!

It freezes on the boot logo too often and in general isn't as stable as 2.5.0.2 also I hate the new placement of where cache and dalvik-cache are in the wipe menu. It makes it way to easy to accidentally wipe the wrong partitions. But if you want to try it I can make a zip.

Just made the TWRP 2.6.0.0 zip. Flashed it myself to make sure it works.
Note: I dont recommend flashing twrp 2.6.0.0 unless you knew what you're doing and have a way to restore a recovery. If you do install it you may get stuck on the teamwin blue screen the next time you reboot recovery. Don't freak out, just hold menu + power button for ~15 seconds and the device will shut down.
