I got a Galaxy SII last week from a friend. I'm very familiar with rooting, flashing, CWM, etc. First I flashed Siyah kernel I believe, and it gave me CWM but I got bootloops so I went back to 4.0.3 stock. Then I flashed codeworkx's kernel for CWM through Odin. Got stuck at galaxy SII screen so once again I went back to stock. All I want is to get SlimBean flashed or maybe CM, but I can't get a stable kernel flashed correctly. Anyone feel like helping me out?
Edit: Also, before someone asks me to check my model number, I know I have an SII (i777) unlocked running stock rooted ICS 4.0.3

Actually it sounds like OP is mixing kernels with his rom versions
Install kernel with cwm. Don't boot back into os.
Boot into cwm.
factory reset / wipe data
Flash rom from cwm.
Boot

BS. Impossible unless the flash was bad. CWM is built into kernel. Kernel and OS only matter if planning on booting into OS. You can flash a GB kernel while on a JB ROM and have no issues getting into CWM.
Issue is on your end. Odds are, your holding it wrong. heh the one good thing the iphone has done is that phrase
No, it would boot cwm just fine but cwm wouldn't work. Couldn't select anything on either kernel. NEAK worked just fine. I know how to boot recovery, I'm not a noob.

Noob is just a word describing someone new to doing something. If you say you aren't, we heard u the first time. Also i'd like to know exactly what kernels you're saying aren't working (the kernel contains the recovery which is what yer saying isn't working for u) so I can flash them myself.

They're in the OP. @Ninja, I could navigate the menu, but I couldn't select anything. Example: select "mounts and storage" or whatever it's called exactly. Screen would flash and put cursor back at the top selection. I tried every submenu, and tried selecting them each multiple times. Either way, I ended up flashing NEAK and it worked perfect. Now I have AOKP so I'm good.

Perhaps the non functional cwm experiences, resulted from an incompatible kernel? International, for example? I've never screwed up a flash, outside of forgetting gapps once or twice back in the day, so I'm just speculating.

Ohhh, I think I get what OP is talking about.
Sometimes, on older kernels, if you hold or bump the volume buttons it screws up the selector button. I would have this problem occassionally, rebooting CWM fixes it.
OP, tell me exactly how you are booting into CWM. Are you using the "hold all three buttons down" method? If so, try releasing the volume buttons earlier. I think holding both vol buttons while CWM is up disables the power key selector. This sounds like what's happening here, it isn't a bad kernel issue just some weird glitch they all seem to have.

three button combo. it isnt that glitch you're talking about though. once i flashed NEAK, i booted into cwm the same way and it worked just fine everytime. either way, im on AOKP now and i dont plan on going back to ICS so im good on flashing other than ROM updates and Gapps.

I am running the latest cm9 nightly. If I boot into recovery by using the power button reboot option, I get cwm 5.5.0.4 (from Entropy's DD kernel when I was on UnNamed). If I boot into recovery from rom manager, I get version 5.8.1.8. So apparently I have two different versions of cwm installed on my i777. Is this normal? I cannot seem to update the older version by flashing a newer version over it.

You can't update with it, you can't back up safely with it, you can't restore with it, and if you boot into recovery with it you WILL screw up the phone at some point.
Even if someone pipes up that "it works fine on CM9" I still won't believe it - it's just not built for this phone.

Apologies then, but if it's flawless, then I'd be curious how it's dual-booting recovery. Maybe the question should go in the CM9 thread? Or just put it somewhere Entropy will notice - I'll bet he knows.

Yeah I'd ask Entropy for sure, he is the kernel master. The only thing I can think of why it is dual booting like that is, it is injecting it's own recovery that is associated with the app. SO when he boots through rom manager it gives him one recovery whereas booting using the button method gives him the cwm associated with the kernel. But as for working flawless, for CM9 you can download the newest nightly's, boot into recovery and flash all through the app.
Yes, I am sure Entropy knows why. I hope he or anyone who knows the topic notices this thread and shed some light on it.
Sent from my SGH-I777 using XDA
Somehow, and I'm not sure why, RM is able to inject its own recovery.
This would be the first time in my entire history that it didn't inject a broken one.
My SGS2 has been running AOKP for a few months now, all of a sudden today the phone keeps rebooting itself every few minutes. I have tried wiping cache, full wipe etc.... Also I have flashed the newest version of CWM but everytime I reboot the phone it reverts back to the old version. Any ideas help?

Thanks guys, another issue I noticed is that the power button was acting really strangely. When you pressed it it wouldnt turn off the phone it would just bring up the restart menu or it wouldn't register at all, so I thought I had a hardware issue. Any finally I ran this kernel cleaner:

did a full wipe etc...installed rom and then kernel and that has seem to do the trick. Going to hope that it continues to work and I don't have to go out and buy a new phone!
Looks like I have some donating to do.
Don't use ROM manager to flash cwm. As that is what it sounds like u did when u said u "flashed" cwm. Our kernels have recovery built in.

Yeah, that's probably incorrect.
For our phones, CWM is included in all custom kernels and isn't separate from the kernel at all. The only way to update CWM is to flash an updated custom kernel, like if Siyah or NEAK were to update for instance.
Don't bother trying to update CWM all the time, there's honestly little to no benefit from even trying and you'll likely end up with problems instead like you did this time. The version of CWM included with the custom kernels available is more than sufficient, just stick with those instead of trying to update it separately.
So I thought I fixed it but at last I haven't. After running the kernel cleaner, installing different roms/kernels the phone still boots for no reason after a while, not as often but at least 2-5 times a day. I am have no idea what's going on.

Yes it is definitely from my favorite series of books. This is one of the only forums I visit that I couldn't get just Mostly Harmless.
Doesn't really get hot, but after a while the power button stops responding and only time fixes this or a fresh install of a kernel. I formatted my SD card and the internal memory (without grabbing my pictures ) and any app I install is new from the market.
Could someone point me in the right direction of how to get back to completely stock - without root?
I can only find the guide to revert to stock with root. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1286432 And im also confused on what would be considered "stock" now since im pretty sure what originally came in the phone has been updated.
FYI im running AOKP milestone 6, and i also have a jig if that makes any difference. (also is there a flash counter i need to worry about?)
I have a captivate, and i used to use the one click odin flash to get it completely stock, is there anything like this for this phone?
I guess my last resort would be to do what they said in the thread linked, and then figure out a way to unroot?
thanks in advance for any help.

EDIT: JUST MAKE SURE YOU HAVE AN AT&T SGS2 MODEL #I777 AND NOT A SKYROCKET #I727
A few more notes
1. Before you flash anything make sure your battery is charged...
2. Stock now would be UCLE5 ICS don't flash that tho it has a major bug in the kernel, KK6 has issues as well KH7 would be your best bet depending on what you want to do with the phone I will link you to two other threads at the bottom.
3. As long as you're flashing a stock package you won't trip the flash counter...
4. If you flash the stock no root KH7 package and it wont boot after, boot in to 3e recovery and wipe data/factory reset. If it does boot then boot back in to 3e and wipe data/factory reset to reduce any chance of FC's and issues...

So I have a phone rdy to go back to warranty due to phone turning off at any random shake. So I'm in the process of trying to get my clockwork backup and titanium back up files off the phone to the comp. However, on the latest aokp with stock kernal, i wanted to mount usb to transfer these instead of mtp. So i was thinking of trying different kernals because i think i read that somewhere you can do it with dream and siyah. After flashing and not finding out to do it on dream, i flashed downloaded siyah. Went to flash said kernel in recovery and while trying to do the three button combo I noticed it would not work, just stuck on Samsung galaxy s2 boot splash screen. Odd, booted back into aokp, pressed power to reboot into recovery. Same thing. My next step was to odin ucle5 stock root file. Still no go. Even tried odin uckh7 stock root, still no go. Anyone have any ideas? Can get into download and that's it.
*Edit*
After persistence, I finally got into stock 3e recovery which gave me access to a factory data reset. This is what i needed.
Since u used Odin ( not mobile Odin but the Odin on the computer) to flash I hope u reset ur flash counter before sending it back. If they check it and see it reads anything but 0 you may get a hefty bill for any new phone they send u.

Since u used Odin ( not mobile Odin but the Odin on the computer) to flash I hope u reset ur flash counter before sending it back. If they check it and see it reads anything but 0 you may get a hefty bill for any new phone they send u.

It's the fact that he no longer flies his flag... I've noticed a great deal less greatness from him since...

I've seen it (and even installed it temporarily) but it's never included when I flash a new kernel/rom.
Just wondering...

AJK uses a touch based recovery.

I have AJK 4.5 installed and my recovery is "CM-based recovery v6.0.1.2-Siyah". Is that what it should be?
It has navigation keys (which I only just noticed lol) but it's not fully touch. I installed a touch version of CWM from CWM site. It was temporary and yes I realize that was probably stupid but I really liked it!

AJK recovery is fully touch. Along the bottom of your screen are the touch keys. From left to right:
1 goes Up
1 goes Down
1 is for Back
1 is for Enter or Select
Additionally, you can scroll between options by using your finger on the screen itself, and you can select by swiping to the right - and go back by swiping to the left.
Thanks AJ. I really appreciate knowing that! I was using vol/power lol.
I don't want to be a pain but I'm really curious why you don't use CWM touch recovery.
Edit: I rebooted my phone into recovery just so I could play with it. Sweet!

The reason I cannot change recoveries (until I get around to building a custom recovery, that is) is because of the customization of AJK. There is always the possibility that a user can change something that will leave their phone unable to boot. If that happens I want them to have the ability to reset profiles from within recovery.
Thanks! Nice of you to explain!
