boot looping for no reason, any help? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

My SGS2 has been running AOKP for a few months now, all of a sudden today the phone keeps rebooting itself every few minutes. I have tried wiping cache, full wipe etc.... I tried installing a different kernel and also a different rom, now it's on ShoStock, but it continues to loop. Also I have flashed the newest version of CWM but everytime I reboot the phone it reverts back to the old version. Any ideas help?

How do you flash CWM?
I got no clue on the issue at hand other than to go back to stock and see if it persists, if it does its hardware.

Thanks guys, another issue I noticed is that the power button was acting really strangely. When you pressed it it wouldnt turn off the phone it would just bring up the restart menu or it wouldn't register at all, so I thought I had a hardware issue. Any finally I ran this kernel cleaner:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1363738
did a full wipe etc...installed rom and then kernel and that has seem to do the trick. Going to hope that it continues to work and I don't have to go out and buy a new phone!
Looks like I have some donating to do.

Don't use ROM manager to flash cwm. As that is what it sounds like u did when u said u "flashed" cwm. Our kernels have recovery built in.

Thats what I was thinking :highfive:

I download the latest CWM (6.0.1.0), put the zip on my SD then boot into recovery and installed it as a zip, is that incorrect?

Yeah, that's probably incorrect.
For our phones, CWM is included in all custom kernels and isn't separate from the kernel at all. The only way to update CWM is to flash an updated custom kernel, like if Siyah or NEAK were to update for instance.
Don't bother trying to update CWM all the time, there's honestly little to no benefit from even trying and you'll likely end up with problems instead like you did this time. The version of CWM included with the custom kernels available is more than sufficient, just stick with those instead of trying to update it separately.

So I thought I fixed it but at last I haven't. After running the kernel cleaner, installing different roms/kernels the phone still boots for no reason after a while, not as often but at least 2-5 times a day. I am have no idea what's going on.

You tried going to stock and seeing if the problem persists? For my brother it was an app so keep that in mind as well

Yes it is definitely from my favorite series of books. This is one of the only forums I visit that I couldn't get just Mostly Harmless.
Doesn't really get hot, but after a while the power button stops responding and only time fixes this or a fresh install of a kernel. I formatted my SD card and the internal memory (without grabbing my pictures ) and any app I install is new from the market.

Hey, instead of creating another thread, I'll just post in here.
My SGH-i777 was working fine, I downloaded the latest Update CM9 Nightlies 2012-06-09 directly from CM's download site. I was previously running CM9 Nightlies 2012-06-03.
I put the Update in the root of the internal SD memory. I started up ROManager, and selected the "Flash ROM Update" option. The Phone shut off, as normal, so it can go into Recovery Mode and Flash the Update automatically.
The phone never got into the Recovery Menu! I waited for about 5 mins, but nothing was booting up on the screen.
So I removed the battery and inserted it back in to turn it back on. It shows the Galaxy SII Splash Screen and then the screen turns off, and it just keeps flickering on and off. You cant see the flickering unless your in a dark room, in the daylight you won't notice it, because the backlight turns on for a split second and its really faint.
So I ruled out that its not that the battery has died, because before I started up ROManager the battery was full.
Anyways, can you guys help me? Thanks in advance!

You obviously read nothing before trying to flash otherwise you would have known not to use rom manager unless you're on CM9 already
Edit : okay you were already on CM9 but you still should stay away from rom manager, it's not known for being reliable

What kernel were u using prior to trying to update and did u flash the correct version of Rom manager? I know last time ilooked there were multiple options for the i777.

If it's not reliable, why does CM9 come with it installed on its ROMs?
And I've used it a few times before and never had a problem with it. Also like I said, if it's so unreliable, I'm sure the devs over at CM would have taken it out of their ROMs...

I was using the Siyah Kernel made for the SGH-i777. And the latest version of Rom Manager.
Edit: The thing im confused about is I didn't flash anything yet and it just stopped working. I would understand that if I flashed something and in the middle of flashing it stopped working then that's completely different.

I've always had problems trying to flash from ROM Manager. Always boot into CWM manually when flashing. If you can't get it into download mode and see it in Odin, you may be screwed. There's a another way to get into download mode...something like removing the battery, connect to PC via USB cable, then hold volume buttons down while inserting the battery...or something. I searched and couldn't find it again.

Big is right . Best to boot into cwm manually, I've had problems with using Rom manager to do it as well, the few times I've used it. Also, Im 99% sure Rom manager comes built into cm itself, as a system app for all cm releases. So i don't think they stick it in there for just our device or anything. But i could be wrong.

I can't get into Download Mode or Recovery Mode. Like I said I didn't even get a chance to try and Flash anything, I was about to backup my current ROM and while RM was booting into Recovery Mode, its like it just froze on a black screen.
IDK if its a Hardware Problem or my Mother Board got fried somehow cause the screen turns on and shows "Samsung Galaxy SII" and then it just turns off. And in the daylight it looks like the phone is off, but if your in a dark room, you can see the screen's backlight flickering on and off.
Do you guys think that USB Jig will work?
Thanks guys for you help!
EDIT: BTW, I'm now stuck using a crappy WP7! It was my step-sons, LOL. It is like a watered down smart phone... I don't even think it deserves the title "Smart Phone".
Pull the battery and leave it out. Then go into download mode the usual way by holding the two volume buttons and plugging in the USB cable. The phone wil go into download mode with power supplied by the cable. If this fails, then there is definitely some serious problem, and hardware can not be ruled out as a possible cause.

Thanks!!!!! Your a life saver! I plugged it into the phone charger and held the Vol. Down Button and it was able to boot into Download Mode and the screen did not shut off like it has been on every boot up I've tried!
Right bow I'm charging it so I can plug it into my laptop and restore my phone later tonight after work.

I need help !

To make a long story short.
I bought this phone yesterday, dedcided to root, flashed cwm through odin, got a failure so the whole night trying to figure out whats going on and still haven't figured it out yet till now. I kept getting the firmware kies upgrade issue with the yellow triangle.
I posted a help thread on the SGH-1727 section and thats where I also got my guide. The whole time I have been putting in SGH-1727 skyrocket drivers and using odin app for that phone. Since there are a few type of galaxy SII on this forum i got confuse.
My goal is to root the phone, get the nicest JB rom and also a nice kernel which I can port over to this phone. I am not going to even start which best roms or even best kernel, but i just want to get back on track on how to fix my problem first.
As of now im stuck on firmware upgrade kies screen. Which Odin should I use to flash? Should I flash a stock rom first or CWM?
First and foremost: You do NOT flash CWM on this phone, it is included in the custom kernels and each ROM is packaged with one. You can change the kernel afterwards if you so desire. Also, DO NOT use any app labeled CWM or ROM Manager... Just don't. You're likely to create problems for yourself. Nothing against you, it's just the way this phone works.
If you can get back to complete stock, I would do so. After that, read the stickies. After that, read them again. TWICE!
Once you're done with that, use Google to search any questions you may still have. End your search queries with: I777 xda - ALL the information you need is here in these forums and can be found by simply searching. Some things you may have to dig a little, but for the basics, it's easily found.
Trust me, I'm being nice. I'm trying to keep you from being flamed... not guaranteeing its gonna work.
Oh, if you don't find it on these boards, don't use the info.

Lesson learned. I feel bad even one of the people that helped me remote access my laptop to resolved the issue that wasn't resolved.
I managed to go back to stock thanks to creepyncrawler guides. Now basing it off a lot of what I see. This phone has a lot of one click programs. I am so used to HTC builds, but not on Samsung.
I don't even know the first step and there are so much information everywhere on here. Don't know where to start. If someone can guide me and not bag on me telling me I'm lazy and don't what to search stuff please I don't need that.

That was the only case of confirmed emmc damage that I have seen on this forum. If you want to avoid this possibility, then from stock Gingerbread, which I assume you have if you followed my guide, then flash a custom firmware of your choice. The kernels packaged with the custom firmwares all are safe.
Read and follow the first guide linked in my signature, and you can flash custom firmware without taking weeks to study and learn.

With that being said, NEVER assume that you will be able to use your phone after a flash. Not trying to deter or scare you, but always have everything backed up and anything you really want off the phone (pics etc.) - Some say a FULL WIPE us need between every flash. I agree. It GREATLY reduces your chance of having a bad flash.
So, in short, yes. You seem to be catching on, but in your spare time read up on some more helpful threads and I think you'll be a flashaholic on your S2 soon enough
Also, this device is vastly different than any other. If you have experience with other phones, that's great, but not always helpful.

Always wipe data/factory reset & wipe cache when flashing a different rom than the one you currently have (sometimes when updating a rom to newer version of the same rom, some say data wipe is not needed). Go back into recovery mode by holding volume - & + and the power button and release when you see the second samsung splash screen. You will be able to wipe data and then reboot into SuperNexus if all goes well, if not then re-flash the rom and gapps. Also to prevent lock-ups on SuperNexus I recommend using Siyah 4.1.4 (in siyah thread) or Siyah 4.1.5 (in the semi thread) for a kernel. To do that just go back to recovery and flash the kernel (wiping cache & dalvik) then reboot. Also SuperNexus comes with ROM manager but do not use it, Siyah will install CWM recovery. These are the steps I followed when doing this on my I777.
You should always full wipe when switching roms. Initial boot can take awhile, though. If you hit 30, re try with full wipe

U don't have to wait 30 minutes. I've never had a rom take more than 5 to fully boot up. And as stated always wipe data cache and system when coming from a different rom base or upgrading to a new base.

30 is just my "****s definitely not happening" cut off. The anticipation of potentially having screwed something up leads me to sweat the boot time. I've had a handful of 10-15 minute boots back during broken ics days. Call it fire and forget stress management lol

Oh No...

My 2nd topic in about 20 mins!
I've just flashed Siyah Kernal but made a mistake and flashed an older version accidently (I flashed 1.3 instead of 1.7)
Now my phone doesn't boot, it gets to the loading screen where it displays model etc and then stops. I can boot into recovery, I was thinking I can just flash the other kernal but I don't have it on my storage.
I wiped cache then davlik cache and then installed the old version and rebooted and now I'm stuck
I'm thinking just wipe data and reflash ROM but I've never messed around with kernals before so I don't know if it's any different
Help is GREATLY appreciated!
If you have an external SD, transfer the updated 1.7rc1 syiah to that, and flash it from recovery.
Should solve the problem.
If it doesnt, wiping and reflashing the rom, then the corect kernel should work as well.

I would start with that.. if any problems occur, then go to wiping.
I would wipe delvic and cache
Update Syiah myself a few times without a wipe. Although I am sure some would recommend a wipe.
I've just put my external SD into its adapter so that my laptop can read it and I get write protection errors.
Can I just wipe data/factory reset and reflash the ROM to gain access to my phone again and then flash the kernal?

Help, Vibrant does not boot

I've been using the euphoria ROM for a few months now with no incident. The phone has never given me problems of any sort, well the bad GPS, but that's a known issue.
Anyhow the other night went to bed without charging my phone. In the middle of the night I woke up and realized it was not charging, so I connected the charger and went back to bed. However by that time my phone has fully discharged so I got the battery graphics.
In the morning when I tried to turn the phone on I got the spiral boot icon and then a black screen.
I've tried to get the recovery mode but to no avail. I know the phone is somewhat working because i get the spiral boot animation and the charging graphics but i cannot get the phone to turn on. Did anybody know a fix, any advice will help.
Thanks in advance

I like your name, X (thats my nickname around here )
Anyways, when you plug it in, does the charging stuff come up? (if yes, how much battery do you suppose its at?)
Have you tried download mode? (take out battery, plug in USB, put battery back in while holding... I think its vol up and down + power, after it says VIBRANT let power go)
I'm not sure if your phone even goes that far.
Likewise I like your nickname.
My battery is close to 100%. I tried the sequence you mentioned with no luck. I get the same behavior, I get the spiral boot graphics and the phone good black. With the cable connected I get the charging battery graphics. The graphics does work properly. When the battery gets to 100% it vibrates too

Just curious, what ROM/kernel were you on?
Also, by the spiral graphics are you talking about the bootanimation?
Are you on Froyo bootloaders or Gingerbread bootloaders?(if you don't know and have never messed with bootloaders its froyo)
I'm running Chimera v2.2. It's an ICS ROM made by team passion. The kernel is 3.1.10
Yes by the spiral I mean the boot animation. You only ever see it from a cold boot.
I don't know what boot loader I'm running.I think team passion is using the same one as Cyanogen. It's that common boot loader with a GUI.

Well the bootloader doesn't really use a GUI. You might be talking about the recovery, the one with "reboot system" and "install zip from sdcard"
What i was referring to was when i was installing the Chimera ROM I hadn't use a GUI app to install the ROM l. I thought the instructions mentioned it was installing a bootloader, but I could have miss read it.
Okay, X, I tried the steps again. I realize I did not follow all of your steps so I repeated them again. This time in tried the three finger salute with the USB plugged in and it worked. I get the recovery menu by choosing reboot it boots up properly.
However when I shutdown and turn on the phone I'm back to square one

Wait.. so when you tried my method your phone actually booted all the way up??
I was planning for you to go to Download mode and ODIN, but err..
Next time you go to recovery
*make sure you have a ROM in your sd card that is safe to flash, even if its chimera*
wipe data/factory reset
mount/storage > format system
flash your ROM in sd, then reboot
Yeah I wasn't expecting it to work. But now that that worked I am a bit nervous about installing a ROM incase the bootloader is corrupted.

:l, pretty sure you're confused, and the bootloader is not corrupted. If bootloader was corrupted, your phone would never start without a JTAG again.
Anyways, get into recovery, and flash chimera or any other safe rom you have, and see if it boots up. I think it may be something with Chimera.

Just a suggestion, don't re-install Chimera... Or at the very least, don't use it as a daily driver. I stand by that for two reasons. For one, Chimera may have been the reason you got into this problem in the first place. The second reason being... Well... Er... Chimera v2.2 isn't the best ROM out there, and it's kinda dated... I'm sure there's others that would agree. I mean there's plenty of other ICS ROMs available that run much better. Jellybean ROMs have also reached a point of stability, so there's some good Jellybean flavored options to choose from as well. Personally, I'm running ParanoidAndroid (JB) and I'm lovin' it.
Just my two cents... But if you like Chimera, then stick with it. It's definitely a usable ROM.

I'm not dead set on Chimera, it was the best ROM at the time.
I'll give the ROM you mentioned a try, thanks

Awesome. If you're like me -- a big fan of customization -- then I'm sure you'll love ParanoidAndroid (LINK).
Otherwise there are ten other JB ROMs to choose from, and about seventeen different ICS ROMs to choose from (excluding Chimera v2.2). Links to said ROMs can be found in the "ROM" section of the Vibrant Bible thread (LINK).
EDIT: Sorry if I kinda' veered this thread off topic... Have you gotten you're phone running fine now =X=?

No it did not work. I thought all was good. It seemed to work when I performed a soft shutdown. Then I tried a cold boot: shutdown the phone, pulled the battery and on startup the phone would not work.

Awesome thanks for the links. It sounds like paranoid android will for my likes. I'm going to update my phone with that rom.
I'm still having problems with my phone however.
So I've upgraded my phone to the latest ParanoidAndroid but I'm still getting the same problem.
All works fine once it's running but I have to use the USB and three finger boot to get the phone to start, once I'm in the recovery mode selecting her restart launches the OS .
However trying to start the phone from a cold boot does not seem to work...any ideas anyone?

May be you need a new battery how long you have the current battery.

It's probably not bootloader-related, but for what it's worth, froyo bootloaders don't work well with ICS Roms.
Chances are it's just a ROM issue, but if that fails just ODIN to default, re-root, install GB bootloaders, etc. (Basically, start over)
I have run many ICS and JB ROMs without issue running froyo boots. It was mostly GB ROMs that had issue and needs GB boots. I don't suspect that to be the issue however, it won't hurt to try it.
I am Jack's smirking revenge.

[Q] Why are these roms not working?!? x.x

There were two main roms I wanted to try after I finally S-OFF'd my phone yesterday. Hatka Supreme 1.1.0 and Carbon. Neither of these worked and I'm glad that I backed up my S-OFF rooted stock rom. Hatka Supreme, the guy states its best to use Beast Mode kernal with the rom, which I flashed after I installed the room, and it just randomly reboots at the splash screen/a few seconds after getting into Android, so I restored my stock and everything worked fine. Next, I tried Carbon, and it just sat there at the carbon flash screen for like 20 minutes, so again, I had to restore to stock. Is there something I'm doing wrong? Is there a difference between Original Android Development and Android Development? Should I be looking at the original or what? I'm really lost, I'm going to try another rom, hopefully someone replies to this before it finishes downloading. Thanks for the help.
EDIT: I'd rather just sit and wait to see if someone replies before I waste time downloading another rom...any help would be appreciated.

It's probably your recoverys fault. On my last DNA I had nothing but failures. Once it took at least 30 times to get a Rom installed. Never solved the issue on that phone. I just soffed my new DNA yesterday, installed the newest cwm touch and flashed 4 different roms with no problem. Try re-flashing cwm touch.

Yes, still the same thing, I'm not saying I didn't do that the first time though, that's like the basics of installing a rom.

Do you think its TWRP's fault? After I found out there was no way to mount USB storage in TWRP I wanted to switch to CWM, but sadly I don't know how.

You could use the goomanager from the play store or use fastbook flash recovery cwm.img
Edit: for the touch version of cwm fastboot is required.

I would rather use goomanager, because it seems easier, but the only thing it seems to be able to download is the twrp image. How would I set it to cwm?
I have canvas 2 running on suvi6 Jupiter rom i have some prob with this when i reboot some icon on home screen will disappear, i found that those apps which r installed on ext sd card its icon will disappear from home screen, but apps working in apps list, only icon from home screen disappeared.
Other problem is that while incoming a call i cannot see full picture of caller becoz half screen is black and half picture can be seen.
Please help me

Sorry I was mistaken, goomanager installs twrp not cwm.
Fastboot is easy to use, I'm at work so I can't to a step by step til I get home later. You should be able figure it out but if not I will help when I get home.

I don't know if you knew this already but I s-offed using moonshine, is that a problem? I installed cwm and tried installing hatka again and it did the same thing, restart like every three seconds into android. I don't know what to do anymore.

I'm no expert, but when u flashed hatka, did u reboot into the system before flashing beast mode kernel? Flashing a kernel in the same recovery session is a no no. Also, beast mode is not compatible with carbon, fyi.

I did that the first time, and thats when I started experiencing it, so I figured that was the problem. So I restored to stock, and then just tried flashing the rom and booting, still same thing, rebooting every 5 seconds. Sometimes I'm able to get into settings, scroll up and down a few times, and then it reboots.
EDIT: If I remember correctly, I didn't even flash beast mode kernel after I flashed carbon.
