Can anyone put into layman's terms the initial process of rooting a phone? I have the OTA and there's no root method, so I'd like to manually root via TWRP. Is busy box mandatory for root? If not, should I get it or pass on it? Where do I get the package to flash? Then for supersu....where do I get the binaries/zip package for that?
I want to ruu back to actual stock and then manually root, but the only thing I cab find is the root scripts, which don't work. I'm having issues with the 1.22 rooted Rom which I believe stem from stripping out firmware and or hboot and stuff. Since I'm already updated is prefer to work from the actual stock build.
This could be a great starting point for those with phone that are already updated... Anyone care to help?

well chill for one second xD you dont need and cant use any of that mess if you dont have root
what you did is whats preventing you from rooting, which was updating to 1.22, as far as i understand, the current methods dont work for getting you root, sooo, maybe im wrong but i believe theres a trick where u can RUU back to the old 1.33 or whatever, but look in the original development thread
Of course its still possible. Why couldn't I ruu (to 1.22)...run HTC unlock...flash twrp...flash supersu...flash busybox? Boom, I'm rooted on a stock build. I know the current scripts can't do it, bit I can definitely do it manually if I have all the right resources....or if I knew what I was doing... Right??

if the htc site doesnt have it, and you know how, then you should post your method xD
otherwise idk what your saying...
If you want root and s-off use the links in my signature where it says ]ROOT] and [s-off]
Just concerned with root... It says it works up to 1.13. I've already done the OTA so I'm 1.22... Will it still work?

Didn't you already answer your own question in the 3rd post in this thread. You seem to already have the answer.
However, I will say this is discussed in several other threads already just spend a little bit of time searching and you'll find the directions to help you. The time you'll spend searching is as much time as you've put into this thread already.

I have been searching.....I've spent HOURS and HOURS on this forum the past few days. I guess I'm just looking for confirmation that what I want to do is in fact the right thing to do... Everyone is so set on all the root scripts, but noone says what that process actually is. And that's what I want. I want the process so I can start contributing without just taking everyone else's work. I think there's a ton of people in my same situation (htc unlocked, s-on, accepted the OTA) that wants a simple way to get back root without reflashing entire roms. So I guess my three big questions are...
1.) I understand that root requires an app (superuser or supersu) as well as the binaries. I have no idea where these binaries are. Where would I get the supersu ones? Is it flashable? Where do the "binaries" actually go?
2.) Busybox...do you have to be rooted to install it? It seems like you do if this is really a set of tools not included in stock android. Maybe I'm wrong though. And more importantly....where do you get it. I'll be honest, I haven't searched around on this issue yet, so maybe the answers already out there... I just wanted to ask in case someone felt like layin down some knowledge.
3.) The flashable zip. I guess I could unzip one and see what's inside, but I'm sure someone on here can explain so it makes more sense than I'd gather by just unzipping and looking around. Like for instance, so flashable zips are entire roms...some are just radios...some are simple tweaks. This leads me to believe there's a script inside defining what to actually do. Let's say I wanted to create my own flashable zip which included TWRP, the root binaries and supersu, as well as busybox. Do I create a perl script called your_moms_a_skank and include it with all the other files? Is there a certain filename (instructions) the android operating system looks for when you flash a zip? Shoot i dunno.....I guess I'll start ripping these apart and seeing whats inside....
If you can't answer all three, that's fine. Any information is better than none... You all are awesome and I would buy you all cupcakes if I knew where you lived... Don't actually tell me where you live because the cupcakes will never come. I'll eat them long before they make it to the post office. I'm just saying....I'd consider buying you a cupcake. And it's the thought that counts...so you have to be happy about this.

Saw a couple threads on Rooting but wanted to see if someone could post a link to the newest and best method for rooting a TB. I have rooted multiple Evos through ADB and through the 1-click root method. Have flashed Radios through bootloader and Kernals through Recovery and can almost do all of that with my eyes closed on my Evo. Girlfriend just bought a used TB last night and I want to root it but dont want to brick the thing. The Evo is near impossible to brick but saw mention of bricking the TB. Any help is greatly appeciated. I want to put her on a near stock rom be it Froyo or GB.
EDIT: Also what is this MR1 and MR2 that I keep seeing? IF it is rom versions then how do I know which one she has?
I rooted my phone when i bought it the week it came out. Then, I dropped my phone last week and had to get a insurance replacement, which i then also rooted.
I found, out of all the write-ups, the ADB Windows Rooting writeup on androidcentral was by far the best...and didn't require me to install all sorts of extra crap on my computer.
Just follow the steps and root and then pick a rom and follow the steps to install. Don't worry about the verizon produced updates...
PS - I like Gingerremix 2.0 the best...find it in the dev. section of this site.

Go into phone status and check it the same way you would on your Evo.
The easiest rooting method I know of?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1005292
I used this even with the MR2 radio and a GB ROM. It does take a couple updates to certain things like Superuser and CWM Recovery, but those are simple.
MR1 is the first OTA that came for the Bolts, and the MR2 is the upcoming OTA. You for sure dont have the mr2 on there if its not rooted and used. The bricking issues were from a leaked radio. Ive not read anyone bricking their phone otherwise. Well, as long as theyve followed directions anyways. After that, you can browse this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1081930
Tons of choices there for her.
However, if you know ADB(I personally dont), I would just do the ADB method posted here:

READ THE PDF IN THE FIRST POST. If you do, you wont have any issues. You may have to do things once or twice, but dont stress it. Sometimes it doesnt take, not sure why, but it wont give your phone any issues as long as you follow the directions he put up.
Im always happy to help someone named Stanglifemike. My uncle that passed away in November was known as Mustang Mike. lol. He rebuilt, restored and fixed Mustangs(64.5-72 ONLY).
I used the Wiki method using ADB. It was my first time using ADB and I had no problems.
Just download the files and follow the instructions line by line.

Just a quick question why are there two dev sections for this device? what is the difference? is one for the older gb and froyo roms and the new for ICS and soon to be jellybean? I am looking into how to root this for a friend. I have a samsung gs2 with an unlocked bootloader I have never rooted a phone with a locked bootloader. So how do you guys go about this? For my phone I have a pc program called odin that does low level flashing so all I do is use it to install cloclworkmod or twrp and then flash su and install the.apk and busybox. Is there sometihng similar for this phone or does everything have to be done by ADB? If someone explains which dev section I should go to I will figure it out myself but the more info yoy guys can give me the better. I do still have to find out what software my friend has. I also want her to do this by herself so I want to be able to explain it to her. Thanks in advance.

The Android Development and Original Android Development forums are organized pretty much as they sound: Original Development will have threads for programs, mods, roms, kernels, etc. that are the original work of the developer. Android Development has threads for those that are built off of someone else's existing work (e.g. A rom that is a collection of tweaks pulled from other roms). I agree with the previous poster on using regawMOD, it is the simplest way to unlock the bootloader, flash a recovery and gain root access all at once. That being said, if your friend is on 1.22.651.3, there is an additional step to manually move the root package to the sd card. Read page 80-84 on the dev's thread for more info.

hey guys.
I gave my mom my Evo 3D, but before I did it I flashed a new custom rom from here that had 4.0.3 on it. I believe it was a nocturnal rom, not 100% sure now.
was having some difficulties with the APN settings and turns out I don't have "proper root".
superuser says it can gain root access (almost always) but fails when trying to install the latest binaries. busybox says binaries arent installed and that it can't install them.
I still have S-OFF, and I can still use Titanium Backup and Root Explorer to do things that require root.
what can I do to fix this without having to do a full root and losing all her files and settings?
thanks.
First things first, this belongs in q&a, not development

I have never heard of this before. So you are half rooted?
I don't think that's right. I would say make sure everything is saved on her sd card, format all partitions except sd card, and flash a more updated rom. Then try installing the latest binaries.
Edit: Make sure to use 4EXT recovery and nothing else to avoid problems.
it seems half root is right.
I did another check. su was in /system/xbin but the permissions weren't right, even though I had just fixed them.
I pushed a su from a rom I had I know was fine, and that didn't make a difference. all the files in /system/xbin had all permissions set, except su had all but the execute permissions. I change it to have all permissions...rebooted. now root explorer can't get root access. even though SuperUser says it can get root access and that it is succesfully updating the binaries.
what the?!
Dude, just flash a different rom. The post above yours seemed dead on and he took the time to help you even tho you posted in the wrong section. You could spend hours/days trying to sort this out, or just do a back up and flash a new rom and your must likely good to go.

How difficult is it to gain root access on the HTC One? I have had my One for a while, and now I want to gain root access. I don't care about installing a custom rom, right now. But I would like root so that I can run a few apps that I have seen, but they require root.
I read somewhere that HTC will unlock the bootloader for you. Does that unlocking of the boot loader, give me root, or are there more steps in the process?

Look for the All in one tool. You have to flash a custom recovery to get root. That means no more OTA updates.
And yes, this has been extensively covered in the forums. But I know it is a bit hard to search for noobs.

Same here. I used the Hassoon tool on my Amaze. I should think both threads are pretty good in this circumstance.
I'm new to rooting and the whole android scene. Just bought my s4 a month ago and rooted it this week. I've been trying to customize themes and icons and I know I need to deodex the files on my phone. I downloaded universal deodexer and dropped the files where I needed to but the program wouldn't run. My question is, is there any other way to deodex the files and how exactly do I locate them? Maybe I didn't locate the right ones.
First off, its pretty cool that you are actually trying to learn what you are doing. The initial learning curve is pretty big but you will get the hang of it piece by piece. I can't speak for everyone but I as still learning and started with the Droid years ago. Take a look at this post for some useful info. Credit to Obsidian for the definitions and links. Just take note that some of his definition do not apply to this phone since it was created for the Bionic, but most of the info is helpful and universal.

Now, to answer your question. Honestly I would flash a pre-deodexed rom and use it to modify things. A few are in the Samsung Development section that are basically TouchWiz minus the bloat. You may even find one there that suits you perfectly with no extra modding.

Even ODIN?
Yea i tried Odin, 3.07 and I tried three different stock images and none of them worked. It got to a part during the process that said "Auth (fail)" and then it would close out the program. I just got my replacement yesterday but I'm kind of afraid to root it again lol.
Although I would really like to root it again, since half of the stuff I used it for had nothing to do with what caused the problem in the first place. I was just really excited to download and install a custom room that didn't lag as much as this nonsense from Samsung.

Your original problem sounded like you were trying to flash the mdk firmware on a me7 firmware which would cause auth fail in odin.
But I couldnt find any info above. If you did the the me7 root method you wont have write permissions because boot loader is locked. which would brick your phone when you flash a rom.
Is the me7 root method the one that roots through the micro SD? Is there a way to do so and unlock the bootloader currently or has one not been released yet for the newest Verizon update?

if you did it through terminal then yes. you are on me7 which is why odin gave you problems. currently there is no way to unlock the bootloader. only the firmware previous to me7 can unlock it. So you might be stuck for a while.
Well that's kind of a drag. Installing custom ROMs is the only thing that an unlocked bootloader does? Or is there another reason to root the phone now instead of waiting for a root that unlocks it? Sorry for all of the questions...

update when you got your phone?

Is the me7 root method the one that roots through the micro SD? Is there a way to do so and unlock the bootloader currently or has one not been released yet for the newest Verizon update?

did you update to the new update that the phone was bugging you about when you first got your phone? if yes, then, YOU CANNOT FLASH ANYTHING! OR IT WILL BRICK YOUR DEVICE. if you haven't, then, thank the good Lord that you didn't fall into the samsung trap. you can check on Settings/mydevice/about_phone/Build_Number.... i believe the last frace would say me7... if then, you're kinda screwed for now... if you have something else than youre ok:good:... If you're verizon you WANT TO HAVE "MDK" as your last 3 characters on your build number. MDK= ......Good luck!

root still lets you uninstall or freeze that bloatware on your phone. Only thing I used iy for anyways. have about an extra 400mb of ram freed.
Well that is good to know in case I decide to go through with rooting again. Is there a way to uninstall that update? Or am I stuck waiting for a new method to root the phone that allows flashing? I might root again just to have some of the apps like gmd gesture and greenify.

no you cant do anything right now besides the root. cant uninstall because the bootloader is locked.
some rooted apps are nice to have. just gonna have to wait patiently
In that case, are there any apps you would suggest getting that won't destroy my phone again? I checked online for a list of must-have apps but half of them were directed at people who were experienced with rooting.

I would just get titanium backup for now. and remove some bloatware a safelist can be found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2314265 would not experiment with deleting random things it could cause brick problems nothing much else. if you are not comfortablr with that just try and wait for bootloader to be unlocked which has no eta
I may just do that. If I were to root again on me7 since there's no unlock method, if one were to be released would I be screwed or is there normally a way to do that at a different time than the root?
