need help, root problems? - HTC EVO 3D

hey guys.
I gave my mom my Evo 3D, but before I did it I flashed a new custom rom from here that had 4.0.3 on it. I believe it was a nocturnal rom, not 100% sure now.
was having some difficulties with the APN settings and turns out I don't have "proper root".
superuser says it can gain root access (almost always) but fails when trying to install the latest binaries. busybox says binaries arent installed and that it can't install them.
I still have S-OFF, and I can still use Titanium Backup and Root Explorer to do things that require root.
what can I do to fix this without having to do a full root and losing all her files and settings?
thanks.

First things first, this belongs in q&a, not development

I have never heard of this before. So you are half rooted?
I don't think that's right. I would say make sure everything is saved on her sd card, format all partitions except sd card, and flash a more updated rom. Then try installing the latest binaries.
Edit: Make sure to use 4EXT recovery and nothing else to avoid problems.

it seems half root is right.
I did another check. su was in /system/xbin but the permissions weren't right, even though I had just fixed them.
I pushed a su from a rom I had I know was fine, and that didn't make a difference. all the files in /system/xbin had all permissions set, except su had all but the execute permissions. I change it to have all permissions...rebooted. now root explorer can't get root access. even though SuperUser says it can get root access and that it is succesfully updating the binaries.
what the?!

Dude, just flash a different rom. The post above yours seemed dead on and he took the time to help you even tho you posted in the wrong section. You could spend hours/days trying to sort this out, or just do a back up and flash a new rom and your must likely good to go.

thanks.

Why dose this all ways happen

is this a known problem?
I'm fairly confident this was a Nocturnal rom, and a newer version of one I already had installed. I've flashed countless roms over the last two years and this is the first time this happens.
luckily, i'm on a Galaxy S3 now with no problems and full root. just want to figure it out for my mom so I can get her MMS working on MetroPCS

if you bother to check, I've been a member for way longer than all of you combined and have posted more than all of you as well. maybe the rules have changed lately, but I KNOW that posts in the Dev section are answered more rapidly, which I needed a fast answer, AND are seen by Devs, who rarely go in the Q&A section.
but my question was answered. so thanks. I'll download a new rom and flash that when I get a chance.

Okay then if you have been in here for such a long time how come you couldn't find out the answer for yourself and you should know that you should never post in the dev section unless you have a Rom or a mod </rant>

[Q] rooting first time :)

Hello all,
this is my first time rooting and i have read http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=996616, im downloading the files as i type, so my question is, it it hard to root my thunderbolt? also ive read the pros and cons, and i would also like to know from u rooters, what do u like from a rooted phone?
for those who want to just the question, here u go:
1) it it hard to root my thunderbolt? (following the link)
2) u rooters, what do u like from a rooted phone?
yes im excited to attempt to trying to root my thunderbolt ^^
It's not hard, just fallow the instructions to the letter and of course make sure you have adb set up and the proper drivers installed. After that it's pretty much a cut and paste affair.
Second question: Root = freedom, simple enough.
I went to Youtube to setup my adb.

so for now its ok to have no busybox, after i install a ROM it will be in that ROM correct?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1153055 this is the ROM i am thinking, will i be able to get that onto my phone? i did the 2.5 version
also ty i appreciate answering my questions!
Before you flash any ROM, do yourself a huge favor, and read the OP (original post) and then read it again. Follow the directons carefully. After your first time its like riding a bike. Search the thread before asking questions too since you will likely get hammered by people for asking questions already asked and answered. Good luck.
BAMF is a great ROM, you might search later in the thread for RC5, Adryn leaked a preview with a different kernel than RC4.

You'll need an MR2 radio for that ROM, I recommend the one from the OTA. You can find it in the development thread, it gets flashed through hboot.
Edit: And yes, the ROM you flash will have busybox built in. And +1 for the post above mine, use the search function, it works well. When you do have a question post it in that ROM's thread or keep it in the Q&A section. Best of luck to you.
Hey there! Yes, this is my first post in this forum I believe, but I've been a heavy lurker since December. Currently, my tbolt is rooted and has been for a few months. I'm running BAMF 3.0 RC4 and I can honestly say, the pros far outweigh the cons. A few of my favorite pros is the ability to run a wider selection of apps, more control, the speedier updates from devs compared to Verizon/HTC, overclocking, better controlled over battery life, no bloat removal..the list goes on and on. Basically, being rooted allows me to make changes to my phone to fit my needs. And yes, it is incredibly easy IMHO to root this phone. Good luck, and have fun.
Should mention too that I did mess up my radio when I flashed GB but it was quickly fixed by reflashing. So the only con has been my own fault. I also believe that you can restore the phone to a "fresh out of the box" state should you ever need to take it back.

Try the RC5 preview with the new MR2 OTA leaked radio. Smoothest combination I've used yet.
Yeah definitely would suggest flashing the official MR2 radio as well. It's been the most solid for me. Had issues with 2.5, and I had slow 3g speeds on the leaked MR2.

I'll try BAMF again when RC5 is officially released. My phone really likes Ziggy's kernels. Was flashing almost daily since I got my bolt trying to find decent battery life. Running Synergy now for a week with no issues. Liked the other roms, but Ziggy's kernel gives me the best life.

[ROOTING]Explain Like I'm 5

Can anyone put into layman's terms the initial process of rooting a phone? I have the OTA and there's no root method, so I'd like to manually root via TWRP. Is busy box mandatory for root? If not, should I get it or pass on it? Where do I get the package to flash? Then for supersu....where do I get the binaries/zip package for that?
I want to ruu back to actual stock and then manually root, but the only thing I cab find is the root scripts, which don't work. I'm having issues with the 1.22 rooted Rom which I believe stem from stripping out firmware and or hboot and stuff. Since I'm already updated is prefer to work from the actual stock build.
This could be a great starting point for those with phone that are already updated... Anyone care to help?

well chill for one second xD you dont need and cant use any of that mess if you dont have root
what you did is whats preventing you from rooting, which was updating to 1.22, as far as i understand, the current methods dont work for getting you root, sooo, maybe im wrong but i believe theres a trick where u can RUU back to the old 1.33 or whatever, but look in the original development thread
Of course its still possible. Why couldn't I ruu (to 1.22)...run HTC unlock...flash twrp...flash supersu...flash busybox? Boom, I'm rooted on a stock build. I know the current scripts can't do it, bit I can definitely do it manually if I have all the right resources....or if I knew what I was doing... Right??

However, I will say this is discussed in several other threads already just spend a little bit of time searching and you'll find the directions to help you. The time you'll spend searching is as much time as you've put into this thread already.

I have been searching.....I've spent HOURS and HOURS on this forum the past few days. I guess I'm just looking for confirmation that what I want to do is in fact the right thing to do... Everyone is so set on all the root scripts, but noone says what that process actually is. And that's what I want. I want the process so I can start contributing without just taking everyone else's work. I think there's a ton of people in my same situation (htc unlocked, s-on, accepted the OTA) that wants a simple way to get back root without reflashing entire roms. So I guess my three big questions are...
1.) I understand that root requires an app (superuser or supersu) as well as the binaries. I have no idea where these binaries are. Where would I get the supersu ones? Is it flashable? Where do the "binaries" actually go?
2.) Busybox...do you have to be rooted to install it? It seems like you do if this is really a set of tools not included in stock android. Maybe I'm wrong though. And more importantly....where do you get it. I'll be honest, I haven't searched around on this issue yet, so maybe the answers already out there... I just wanted to ask in case someone felt like layin down some knowledge.
3.) The flashable zip. I guess I could unzip one and see what's inside, but I'm sure someone on here can explain so it makes more sense than I'd gather by just unzipping and looking around. Like for instance, so flashable zips are entire roms...some are just radios...some are simple tweaks. This leads me to believe there's a script inside defining what to actually do. Let's say I wanted to create my own flashable zip which included TWRP, the root binaries and supersu, as well as busybox. Do I create a perl script called your_moms_a_skank and include it with all the other files? Is there a certain filename (instructions) the android operating system looks for when you flash a zip? Shoot i dunno.....I guess I'll start ripping these apart and seeing whats inside....
If you can't answer all three, that's fine. Any information is better than none... You all are awesome and I would buy you all cupcakes if I knew where you lived... Don't actually tell me where you live because the cupcakes will never come. I'll eat them long before they make it to the post office. I'm just saying....I'd consider buying you a cupcake. And it's the thought that counts...so you have to be happy about this.

upgrading twrp evo 4g lte

can someone explain how to upgrade from twrp 2.1.8 to 2.2.1? is it necessary? i see where some new roms call for being on 2.2.1 as a preference. and if someone can explain, how do i keep my nandroid backups? i have searched i just havent found a clear cut answer. and im very worried about losing my original backup. i am s-on rooted and did take the ota. ive been using meanrom v2.0. i was thinking bout trying viper 4g and it states in the installation instructions twrp 2.2.1 would be best. i would like t be on the latest recovery regardless. thanks to those who may help.
Im pretty sure your backups will still work on the latest twrp recovery.
To upgrade your recovery download goomanager from the play store. Open the app and hit menu. Choose install openrecoveryscript and it pretty much does it for you. It's really easy.

The theory, as I understand it, is that you're supposed post in other threads outside of dev and join and participate in the community before you start running into problems that you need help with. Anyway, have you read that thread through? I think backwards compatibility was addressed a while ago, I don't remember it being an issue, but I could be wrong. As far as installing the latest version, that was answered above.

Weird about your postcount, you may want to pm a mod about that. The posts above do contradict each other. What it comes down to though is that if you want to flash viper4g, you need to upgrade your recovery. Why not upgrade recovery, then run a fresh backup before you flash the new rom?
GO to the TWRP homepage... clink the link to enter their IRC chat... They will answer your question there. My wife and I had problems with TWRP and back ups and they were most helpful.

looking to help a friend root her evo

Just a quick question why are there two dev sections for this device? what is the difference? is one for the older gb and froyo roms and the new for ICS and soon to be jellybean? I am looking into how to root this for a friend. I have a samsung gs2 with an unlocked bootloader I have never rooted a phone with a locked bootloader. So how do you guys go about this? For my phone I have a pc program called odin that does low level flashing so all I do is use it to install cloclworkmod or twrp and then flash su and install the.apk and busybox. Is there sometihng similar for this phone or does everything have to be done by ADB? If someone explains which dev section I should go to I will figure it out myself but the more info yoy guys can give me the better. I do still have to find out what software my friend has. I also want her to do this by herself so I want to be able to explain it to her. Thanks in advance.

The Android Development and Original Android Development forums are organized pretty much as they sound: Original Development will have threads for programs, mods, roms, kernels, etc. that are the original work of the developer. Android Development has threads for those that are built off of someone else's existing work (e.g. A rom that is a collection of tweaks pulled from other roms). I agree with the previous poster on using regawMOD, it is the simplest way to unlock the bootloader, flash a recovery and gain root access all at once. That being said, if your friend is on 1.22.651.3, there is an additional step to manually move the root package to the sd card. Read page 80-84 on the dev's thread for more info.

[Q] Creating back ups after flashing base ROM

I just got my OG and I'm very happy with it. I came from the Infuse and if you know anything about it you can understand why I'm happy. I'm not new to flashing or new with CWM, and I've been trying to find the answers to my questions in this forum but I have seen conflicting information.
I would love to root and unlock my OG and flash the base ROM - but
1. Can i create and use a backup in CWM? I read that the backup are not working and a fix was on the way, but I could not find out if the fix came or not.
2. If I can't create backups in CWM and I still want to root and unlock, can't i simply remove the bloatware myself from the /sys/apps folder?
Again, I'm new to this phone so be gentle with me if these questions have been asked and answered before. I tired for 4 days to find my answers in a comprehensive place.
EDIT: Sorry community just saw the post in the dev section on the fix.

1. If you use twrp or cwm touch You can do backups both have flashable zips in their respective threads.
2. You can only remove some of the bloat with an unlocked bootloader, otherwise thy set of a security warning.

Just run freegee from your computer or purchase the app on the play store and run that very quick unlock. Doesn't delete anything off of your device. You get the non touch version on cwm or twrp via app (you get the choice) out just the non touch cwm via the desktop version. Both also create backups so you can restore the old bootloader easily.
