Hi guys
I'm an iphone 3gs owner at the mo but my contract is up in a week and after doing A LOT of research over the past 3 weeks, i was pretty much decided that the GS2 was gonna be my next phone.
Then i foolishly visited the xda forums! lol (in fairness, it probably still will be my next phone).
But seriously though, setting aside the various issues some people are clearly having (reboots, battery drain, etc) what shocked me the most was hearing about the low-powered charging mechanism (apologies if i've gotten this slightly wrong).
I've heard that it only charges at ~650mah, but that the phone can easily surpass this under load (~850mah?), meaning that you could be charging the phone at the same time as using it, only to find the battery going DOWN. Can someone confirm if this is true? If it is, then i'm gobsmacked that Samsung could make such a c0ck-up. Imagine if you're using the GPS (a real battery hog) while driving (and plugged-in to the ciggy lighter) only to find that the battery dies before you get to your destination! lol. I've heard about the heat this puppy produces, i wonder did they limit the juice to stop it from burning a hole through the floor
Even though i'm bored to t1ts with my iphone (and i hate apple), what i love about it is that when i don't actually use the phone for extended periods of the day (which is quite often, due to work) it still retains it's charge really well (i get insanely good battery life). I would be really annoyed if i found the GS2 battery dropping any more than, say, 30% over the course of a busy working day (say 9am to 7pm) with virtually no use.
So, to finally get to my point! My iphone charges REALLY fast. I'm worried that it will take a stupidly long time to fully charge the GS2. Can some kind person please do an experiment for me, and see how long it takes theirs to fully charge (from fully dead to 100%) with the screen off and the phone not doing anything major in the background?
Also, it would be good to know how this compares to the GS2's competitors.

I think mine takes around 3 hours from empty using samsungs supplied charger but I will try to do a test for a more accurate time. How does this compare to the iphone?
Yep mine takes about 3 hours as well from empty to about 90% using the wall charger, then it goes on trickle charge the rest of the way. This is on standby as well.
Yepp takpes about 3 hours to get fully charged. however, i've been using the phone as a wifi hotspot all the time and yes, it increases charging time but it doesn't really matter when it takes so long anyways

It takes almost 3.5-4 hours to charge it with stock charger from empty to full.
It takes a bit more than 5 hours to charge from empty full using USB charging in my laptop.
Found out the hard way:
Charging with original EU charger AND heavy use (downloading, Wifi tethering, map ops etc.) MADE it drain faster than charging.
Two nights before left it during night with orig. charger and made it in 8 hrs only to 84% while on.
With Hama 0,8 amps charger full in 2hrs from empty and stays full even with heavy work.
NO heat issue though !

doesn't really matter which charger. got the nokia 1,2A charger and it takes nearly 3 hours as well to fully charge the battery.
I use my ipad charger with it and its definitely more like 2 hours not 3
My car usb adapter is 1amp and has no problem keeping it fully charged while using sygic satnav

Is this an ebay job to get one of these?
Any idea what the max amps the phone can take? I've been looking around, seen chargers up to 2 amps, but don't want to ruin the phone...
Edit: Sorry, posted too soon. Just saw this thread, and the battery has is rated at 1000mA, so ya, don't use a 2 amp charger

if you look thru the battery driver source code, samsung capped the charging at 650 mA it seems. not sure why, other android phones use the full 1 amp.
so samsung either saw a heat problem and lowered it, or that's just the way they do their phones charging. who knows.

Wow, ok. As someone who uses 3G a lot when our internet connection goes down (all too often), I hope the charge will end up keeping up with the battery drain. Otherwise I'll be tempted to change that source and probably end up frying my phone (if it ever gets in stock :|)

So my first day using the Amaze I loved the phone and hated the battery life, with barely using it, bluetooth, wifi and gmail sync all off (no fb) I got about 3% by 5pm. So I am looking for extended battery and dont feel like spending $21 on Anker, specially that all Anker lovers are members since May 2011 or so, kinda fishy, so I looked at alternatives.
I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with this battery:

It may be the same one Anker uses from the same manufacturer in China, I am guessing though, since they are both 1900mAH. For my G2 I got an extended battery from Hong Kong for $4 or $5 and it was excellent except that the door wore out, so I have no worries buying chinese/hk products on eBay.

I'm curious. Does your Anker battery drop from 100% to 94% in a matter of 10 to 15 minutes even without using the phone? I've finally had a chance to better compare stock and Anker batteries and I am getting better life out of stock; but it seems to be in the first 8% that makes the difference. The stock battery remains at 100% after a full charge for a good length of time, then slowly drops thru the 90's even while in use. The Anker battery literally drop 8% in minutes even without use, then slows to a "normal" rate after that. Could my battery just be defective in some manner?

Mine does that as well. I bought it from eBay and told the seller. They sent me a new one and it happens. Mine goes from 100% to 92%. Then when I have about 20%, my phone will beep and say it has 14%. The battery is very strong at 14% but when it drops to 13%, then I have to charge it. But the battery gets me ALOT longer battery life than stock.
Anker Battery and Charger
I have been using the Anker battery on my Amaze. The battery charges in like 2-2 1/2 hours. The charge holds for up to 6-7 hours. I read review on Amazon that these batteries hold charge when you charge them with Anker charger and not while its inserted in your phone. I ordered the Anker Battery charger and have been charging the battery ever since. You will be amazed how long the battery lasts. I am a heavy user and the battery lasts for 8-9 hours now. And when I disable the background data during night, I don't have to charge the battery till next day.

So based on all the positive feedback I didnt get the 2x battery + charger from the Chinese seller. Instead I opted for Los Angeles based Anker battery and paid sales tax and got the battery and charger in 2 days for about $21, almost triple the cost of the other one from ebay from my first post in this thread, which actually came with 2 batteries.
So I performed a scientific experiment today took notes and times and made sure things are going smooth. Fully charged the stock and Anker to 100%. Turned on all GPS, WiFi, Data Sync, Bluetooth, Screen Brightness to get the battery to die as fast as possible. Turned on Netflix and started watching Frazier on both batteries until they both died.
Here are the results:
Anker = 183 minutes to auto-shut off had 2:30 minutes of phone call in the middle, not counted in the 183 minutes.)
Stock Battery = 189 minutes to auto-shut-off (had 8 minutes of idle time in between two episodes of the show, not counted in the 189 minutes). The stock battery is about 2 months old, abused and recharged repeatedly in the car, charged when 50% full, disconnected and reconnected over and over in the car etc.
Both phones were in the exact same spot and connected to external speakers. Both experiments were started immediately after the phone was disconnected from the charger. Both were done on the same phone. So based on my experiment, I feel I simply got a second battery for $21 with a mediocre charger. Definitely NOT an extended battery. The Anker is definitely NOT an extended battery I would say its 1800mAh. (look up on eBay there are many 2800mAh batteries with "effective capacity" of 1800mAh). Just as I thought its simply a rebadged cheap $3 battery with white label and a made up brand name and I was duped, should've bought a $3.49 free shipping battery on eBay. Also the battery is about a hair taller than the stock battery so you have to kinda force it in the Amaze as it says right on top Sensation although it was sold as Amaze 4G battery, I don't care though.
On the positive side, the CHARGER can connect to your existing charger, pretty cool concept, although it may sound useless but its really useful in the car where I don't have 110v but I have a car charger that I can plug into this charger and use a second cable to connect the phone to this charger, this way I can charge both batteries while driving, one on the charger the second inside the phone connected to the Anker charger then connected to the car charger.
I should've bought this 2200mAh battery, probably better than the Anker.
I bought the Anker 1900 from amazon about a month ago. Like someone mentioned, if you charge the battery in charger, you will get better discharge rates.
Keep in mind this is done after I have done a five full charge/discharge cycles on the batteries.

Charged on the Phone fully to 100%
-Drops to 95% before even getting to my car within 10 mins on standby
-Drops to 82% after 20 min drive to work

While I haven't performed qualitative experiments as several of you have, I can honestly say that after using the Anker battery long enough for it to go through numerous "cycles", it definitely lasts longer than stock. It still drops very quickly from 100% down to mid-90s within a few minutes even without using the device, but it used to drop to low 90s in that same period of time. Anyway, regardless of the odd characteristics, it seems to be a very good battery.
BTW, if you pay anywhere close to $21 for just the battery, you're getting ripped of by that retailer. You can easily find it online for $15, and you can often find 2 batteries with the charger for $30. (Actually, Amazon has 1 battery & the charger for $19 right now, see http://www.amazon.com/Anker-1900mAh...LR66/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1328364737&sr=8-1.) I wasn't that patient so I got one battery and the charger for $28 back in early January, but I honestly wouldn't bother with the charger if I had to do it over again. But that's just me, others have reported it as being great benefit so it probably depends on your situation.

I did get the $18.99 with charger and yes I was ripped off and paid close to $21 because my wonderful state of CA charges me an arm and a leg for sales tax. Also there is only one seller for Anker on both eBay and Amazon thats laptopmate, same price both on eBay and Amazon except that on Amazon is free supersaver shipping meaning you have to spend $25 to get free shipping but on eBay you don't. Laptopmate ships from a house neat los Angeles which maybe someone who bought a lot and imported from China and now selling them on eBay and Amazon for good profit because I don't see it being any better than the $3.49 and $6.02 batteries I posted above. When I got an extended battery for my old G2 it lasted me over twice as long but made the phone larger.
Seems charging this battery I'm the charger that came with it will give you the best discharge rates. Below is light use, with Wifi,BT, and gps on the whole time. Used it only for dash cam for about 2 hours off and on.
When I tried charging the battery on the phone only, I'd be lucky if I can hit 10 hours.

I bought this battery for my HTC Amaze 4G (I love this phone!!!) and on my first full discharge cycle, the charge dropped from 100% to 95% in 3 minutes. It seemed to skip 99% through 96%. It then continued to discharge rapidly until around the mid 70's when it kind of starts to slow down.
By the 50% mark, it seems to discharge at a normal rate. During this cycle, I had my Bluetooth on for the 1 hour drive to and from work +1 drive into work on the day it ran out completely. Talk time was around 15 mins in mixed Bluetooth, handset, and speaker phone. About 3 hours of surfing, facebook, gtalk, Globe and Mail news app, and watched a couple of Youtube videos. I sent and received email and calendar notifications (sound+vibrate) almost every 30 mins. I turned off Wifi if I wasn't near any hotspot. I used Bluetooth tethering for about 45 mins. It was in airplane mode between 2 am and 6 am.
By the 20% mark, the discharge rate was very slow. It took another 3 hours before it reached 4% when the phone automatically powered off. Before it did that, I was able to take a picture of it with my webcam (attached) where it shows it has been on for 28 hours.
I am getting the same from my stock battery, and am happy with it anyway, so honestly, I cannot tell if this is really a 1900Mah battery inside. I will keep using it for a week. If it does not improve, I will switch back to my stock battery because that seems to discharge at a more constant rate.

Well I have an Anker but I didn't get it for $7.99. That's a great deal. I have 2 of them and they host last a fair amount of time.

My shopping research pointed me out that this would be best for me because:
1. Pocket size battery perfect for on the go to.... anywhere!
2. Charge it in the wall with your htc charger instead of camping by an outlet with your phone if you need to be on it.
3. 5600mAh battery (should charge the amaze about 3 times)
4. Higher voltage (in amps) for faster charging than many other external batteries... I recently bought another external battery off ebay that doesnt even output enought power to charge my phone on standby becareful about this!
There were many others on amazon by anker and powergen, that are I guess name brand?? who have 100-300+ count of customer reviews if thats what you are looking for, I decided to try this brand because it was the best price for the value... Ill let you know how it is when I get it in the mail if you'd like
If you choose to go with this brand check the dimensions they have different width x length x heights for the same size mAh battery (this is the slimmest but longest one of the 5600 mAh) and check the picture for a micro usb port some of their descriptions will say they do but then have a MINI usb port!!

Anker is a trusted brand as is Mungen. I don't know about any of the others. I'd be suspicious of any battery that was that cheap and suspect it to be a fake. High-quality batteries will usually cost 15-20 at least.
5600 mAH is the charge it holds but the efficiency will always make the effective charging power less. Depending on the native voltage/amps of the device, you will lose anywhere from 20-40% off the maximum rating from things like heat.
Higher voltage in amps will also shorten your battery's lifespan. Not by much but that's the tradeoff you get for the convenience.
I just have 2 anker batteries I switch out constantly on my amaze. If I'm stuck somewhere, my Amaze will be heavily used and it only lasts about 4 hours under heavy use with my Anker. It's good to have another one and another battery is less bulky than most chargers.

Just got my ezo battery today it works great, solo charging is almost as fast as the wall charge and I can charge 2 devices at once.
I'm using an "EC" brand 1900mAH battery that I bought for 7.99 in July of this year right after I got my AMAZE4G. I bought it on Amazon.com, and yesmin my experience it does last longer than the OEM battery. I have no idea how much longer it will last, but so far, so good.
Good day people, I have a dumb question and no need to be polite I know its dumb lol I just got an evo lte and I love it so far. But I did some reading up on training batteries and I'm aware that you can't necessarily train a lithium ion battery but I know there things that you can do help the battery last longer etc.
The first day I did my normal routine, drain it all the way charge it all the way. It took a long time for the battery to die which seemed like it was a good thing. I did that twice and I noticed that after a full charge the battery drops to 97% fairly quickly (like withinless than a min or 2) and from the few days I've had it it seems like it may not hold the charge well over time . I wouldn't normally be concerned about this however this is the first phone I've owned without a removable battery, I don't want to regret it 6 months from now because the phone only lasts 5 hours.
So my question is this I am still within the buyers remorse period should I just exchange it for another onevor am I just being too paranoid? Secondly how do you all train your batteries when you first get the phone? What works for you all who own this phone?

First off, congrats on your choice. This phone has a Li-Ion Polymer battery, which is different from the Li-Ion batteries of yore. I am stock rooted and with medium to heavy use I get a day<12+ hours> out of a full charge with no batt training. I have not experienced the rapid discharge you speak of and if you have no apps causing it, you may need to swap it.
I also get a pretty rapid discharge from 100%->98% - takes about 5 minutes to drop that 2 percent. But after that, I am clear sailing for ~15 hours.
Oh so the rapid discharge thing isn't uncommon then? Hmm

I don't know if it's the same as the og evo and the 3d but when it hit 100% try unplugging it then plug it back in for a few. That may give you the true full charge and stop the quick 2% drop

Yea I'm kind of torn on exchanging it. I may just do it. Of course it would be my luck to get a phone with issues if I did.
That's normal. If this is like the OG Evo (and it probably is), the phone will charge to 100%, then let the battery discharge to 95% before charging back to 100% again. This is primarily to protect the battery and prolong its life. So while the phone may claim to be at 100%, it could be as low as 95% when you unplug from the charger. The rapid discharge you're experiencing is really just the phone adjusting to the actual battery level.
Also, there's no need to "train" the battery. I seem to recall that it's generally not healthy to discharge a Li-Po battery to 0%, and can shorten the life of the battery.
The battery percentage drop you guys are seeing is perfectly normal. No need to exchange your phone. As soon as the kernel source is released by HTC, then the great devs here will be able to bless our phones with some SBC goodness and you will not have that problem anymore
You guys don't think I did any noticeable damage by fully discharching it twice do you? I'm going to charge it and see what happens I don't have any immediate thoughts of exchanging it based off of what you guys are saying. I'm going to charge it up and post results. If its not like what you guys are getting life wise I may exchange it as I still have like 5 days left.

No, it's fine.
Fully discharging it just reduces the number of cycles left you have. Most li-ion batteries have 1000 charge cycles. Battery charge is not an exact science. Do not look at it like you are not getting the full charge.
So at the end of the day it looks like roughly 8 to 9 hours of moderate to heavy use on my phone moderate for the first 7 hours heavy for the last 2 and some change. Does that sound about right?

I get around 15 or 20 hrs also cm9 I get 24+

i am havin HTC AMAZE 4G
when i used to charge it before
phone used to come to 90% from a full in approximately 1 hour.
now it comes very quickly like 10-15 minutes
& also the major problem is my phone gets switched off at any battery percentage like 65% & when it gets restarted it comes to around 8% or sometimes even 4%.
if i pull out battery again restart the phone then sometimes it comes to around 30% back or any random increase in battery or sometimes even decreases to 4% & then the battery gets drained in 5 minutes & i have charge it again
battery takes more time to even charge
sometimes using DATA & charging it even takes 10 hours to charge
i dont know what is the problem
i have been thinking about battery problems
but i googled & in some blogs it shows as circuit problems too
the problem is i am living in INDIA
this phone is not official here so the service center guy wont touch it & i dont want to waste money on the battery if it isnt the problem

How old is your handset? Battery life decline is normal as it ages. Without being able to inspect and test yours out all I can tell you is the most likely explanation for what you're describing is battery wear.
The original HTC battery that came with my phone only holds 2/3 of the charge it once had when new, which is why I invested in a pair of Anker batteries and an external charging station (I purchased them together in a package on eBay for under $30 US shipped). Having the extra batteries has been an excellent addition. I alternate them every few days to more evenly balance how they are wearing and to prolong the remaining life of my original battery. Plus it's great to have an extra battery to use for those times when I really need my device, but don't have the ability to plug in.

I hav been using this phone for 1.5 years
tried using battery of my dad he uses same phone.
It showed 56% in my fathers phone
Wen i switched the battery &; started my phone it showed 15% at start
So what could be the problem then?

You're getting the different results because the batteries aren't calibrated to each phone. If you put your fully charged battery in your father's phone it shows 56%, correct? What happens when you put your father's fully charged battery in your phone? Keep in mind that when switching around the batteries neither with be calibrated to the device, but will instead show a percentage vs the battery that was properly calibrated.
Example: the battery in my phone shows as fully charged, but is worn and no longer charges to the maximum. If I place it in my brother's Evo 3D which uses the same size battery but is newer. It will show as only partially charged because his device is calibrated to his newer stronger battery. Conversely, if I put his newer battery in my phone which has been calibrated to my older worn battery it will appear to be fully or nearly fully charged for a long time before it begins to show it's draining with use.
The only way to properly test your battery would be to either try a known stronger one in yours for several charge - discharge cycles as your phone calibrates to it, or to try your battery in another device for several such cycles. Then you need to compare if there was an improvement in up-time or not. Short of taking it in to be checked on diagnostic equipment it's the best method I can think of.

Maybe you just need to wipe battery stats. One trick that works is let it drain completly and let it be drain over night and charge it again keep doing a couple of days it may just get better. But think is just battery problem not hardware related.
My Original HTC battery worked its way down to 2 hours of usable talk time. Eventually, got so bad that it barely charged on anything but a high current wall charger. Technically it was under warranty at the time...
Ordered 2 Anker Batteries w/ charger for $30, and not long after that the charger broke. It quit charging batteries.
I then just stuck with one Anker battery in my phone and the other as backup. The battery I used the most is now down to about 4 hours of life on a full charge. The least used is about 8. I try to keep the worse one charged up as a backup in a pinch and now use the good battery full time.
Just how life goes sometimes...

Yeah that Anker charger is the weak-spot in that 2 battery package deal. The damn thing is flimsy and fragile. I'm so paranoid about breaking it I treat it with kid gloves. The batteries are pretty good though. The package was one of the best investments I made since owning the Amaze. Using indelible marker I labeled them 1 and 2, and rotate their usage with my original HTC (which is easy to distinguish). This way when I'm on the road I always have one fully charged spare handy, one charging at home, and one in my handset.

But When I was using official ICS from T-mobile, I had the same problem, even after wiping. I even faced a funny thing. Percentage of battery in bar was different from percentage shown in lock screen!!!
After flashing custom rom, All problems GONE!

Don't run it dead regularly (that was for ni batteries), don't charge it all the time (ie topping off everytime you're near a charger). If going to store powered down for long periods do so at like %60 capacity.

Just to clarify, you saying to not charge when battery it has more than 60% charge remaining? If yes. Then how low do you recommend as to minimum charge left on battery when you plug it in?

Best way is to not worry about it. Only thing you want to avoid is letting it die in standby over and over.

Sorry I was so brief was at work on lunch.
In the ideal world you'd probably charge around %20-%30. Lithium batteries do not like being over drained or overcharged. Overcharging isn't really an issue since our phone handles charging. Over draining repeatedly will drain max capacity, same with overcharging. The %60 i refer to is a rough number if you were going to be storing the phone powered off for weeks or months, lithium batteries should not be stored at max voltage or drained.
You don't want to be constantly "topping" your battery off either. The life of a lithium battery is generally going to be measured in charge cycles. So charging it every time you're sitting at a charger will really just wear it out faster.
I generally just charge my phone every night when i go to bed. With as long as these phones last on a charge; I've yet to burn through my entire battery in less than a day more than a time or two. Don't put too much thought into it or worry too terribly much. Running it down once or twice isn't going to do much that you'd immediately notice, but doing it every time is certainly not a good idea!

Okay. Thanks for all the info. It really helps to know that stuff. I'm not to worried about burning through charge cycles. I'm getting 2-3 days of a charge. 4 if I drain it. Battery on this is the best I have even seen. Truly incredible. I don't know how they managed it. But I am absolutely loving it.

The only thing you need to worry about is not letting your battery reach below 14%. Unless your out or not near a charger it's understandable.
Charge your phone once it hits 14%. Let it fully charge don't interrupt it (unless you have too)
Sometimes don't charge your device to 100% I sometimes charge mines to 90%.
Let the battery die once or twice a month.
Just don't worry about the battery. By time you hit anywhere near 500 charge cycles you'll be on the m9 or a new device.

Because you wanna train your battery and get the most out of it. A lot of people say those are old rules because these batteries don't have memory cells. But you'll find yourself not needing to replace the battery as fast as you would by just letting it die all the time
I have replaced a cell phone battery yet and I've been using that method since flip phones days

Hhrrmmm. i think you're thinking of nickel based batteries (nicd, nimh, etc). Generally lithium cells really dont like low voltages or have memory.

I think he's correct on the letting it die once every month or so. I did a lot of research on this a while back and ideally you don't let your phone drop below 50% regularly and don't let it sit on the charger all night since its going to be at 100% for many hours before you wake up a li ion batteries prefer to not be at 100%. The discharging it fully will calibrate it and make sure all the cells are being used since if certain cells don't get discharged every so often they start to lose ability to hold a charge. Keep in mind I looked all this up 2 years ago and most of the issues only affect people who keep phones for 2+ years unless the do 100%-0% every day then their battery won't last long.

These phones all have battery protection circuitry built into them.
As the battery approaches 100% charge the charge current reduces to almost nothing to prevent overcharging.
Having said this I would not leave the phone on charge for weeks on end but there is really no reason to worry about taking it off charge the moment it shows 100%.
Likewise for discharge. When the phone indicates that the battery is getting flat it will make sure that even if you run the phone till it dies, the battery will not have been allowed to overdischarge. When your phone switches off software is telling the phone to power down to protect the battery.
Also, to touch upon Lithium battery charge cycles, one charge cycle is the 100% charging of the battery, now keep in mind this can be from 0-100% OR it can also be the sum of multiple chargings up to 100% capacity of the battery
I.e.- charging from 75% to 100% once is not considered a charge cycle to the battery, but do it three more times from 75% (25%x4=100%"rated" capacity) and it considers THAT one charge cycle. So if you charge from 50% regularly, two times charging from 50 to 100% is ONE charging cycle.

Few months back I was speaking with HTC support, the rep said don't put your phone on charge for more then 1 hour with any lithium batteries.

As usual, speaking with reps can be cause for alarm. In this case, it's obvious he/she was blowing smoke. Read the links posted in the thread.
