I was wondering if there was any way to stop the camera app from being retarded and taking pictures in landscape mode. To see what I mean, take a few pics, email them to yourself, download them.
Guessing Samsung is trying to be fancy by using EXIF data to store the pics orientation. Thats cute but I need the photos to actually be in their original orientation, not a lil EXIF tag that says "oh yeah this should be switched around vertically".
Am rooted and would prefer to simply replace the Camera app as opposed to testing out tons of ROMs. This is a work phone so keeping it as vanilla as possible.
Hello, I got the same problem , i would like to know if you find a workaround ?
that's very annoying when sending MMS...

Try third party apps
Swyped from my Samsung Galaxy SII
it appears to work with third party apps like instagram , FX camera ...but not with camera ICS.
but none of this apps are as fast as the original photo app..
besides , the problem appears only when i send a photo by mail or MMS.
The gallery don't seem to use the exif data and the orientation is fine.

Before sending pics via mail, use any photo editor app to change the orientation.
Done

You can rotate the photo in the gallery but that don't change the exif data .3 party apps works and can rotate the photos but that's only a workaround and it is very slow .
The problem appears when i flash cyanogen CM9.1.0 because it seems that the ROM use the exif data with MMS or mail.
With stock samsung ICS , photo orientation was fine.
Im sorry but rotating images before sending is not an option. This is for work where photos are sent in batches of 5 and as many as 20-30 batches are sent everyday. Doing anything manually is simply not a feasible workaround.
Hi guys,
No matter what I do, the pictures of my contacts remain not only small, but also pixelated beyond recognition. I know there are replacement apps, such as UCS and BIG!, but isn't there anything I can do in order to get decent caller photos in the stock Phone app?
Thanks!

Yes, exactly. I wonder, am I the only one's whose pictures are not as they should be? Perahps I've done something incorrectly, though I cannot imagine what....
Use friend caster pro. My caller id pics are crystal clear. App makes it look crispy
If you getting the pics from facebook then friendcaster is the way to go. Nice, clear pics

Its not you at all. I have had the same issue with several Android devices. Some had painful work arounds. I have seen this talked about numerous times for the RAZR and it is always the same. Use a different app or you will have crappy pics.
Its the same problem anyone with an android phone runs into.
When u sync your contacts with your Gmail/Google account the pics are reduced for the icon it uses online, and then resynced over your phones pics.
Absolutely the stupidest problem which should have been taken care of a long time ago.
either way u need to turn off the syncing. And then manually fix your pics. Or go the Facebook approach as mentioned.
Either way u need to turn off the sync or it will happen again

And I said how to have nice pics in default app. After syncing with contapps all pictures will be there. This will not, of course, fix his buged contact app, but will make possible what he asked for.
Cheers

Easy fix. Take a pic of every person in your contact list and then assign them to the contacts. There is the answer as well as many others. This is not new to android. HTC seems to be able to produce a better image for some reason when synced w Google but still an overall android issue. Been like that since the DROID Eris.
Thank you everyone for taking the time to answer these type of questions !! No matter how good you leave the quality of your photos when you assign them to a contact and that contact calls, the photo looks very grainy. Is this due to a crapy HTC phone.apk? Is there a way to get the photos to look better other than installing something like, full screen caller I.D.?
I've noticed this too. The pictures that are linked from my Facebook contacts look fine, but the ones I took on my phone or come from Google contacts look bad when selected as contact pics

I downloaded full screen called I.D. and it allows me to save the contacts as HD pictures and it looks great, I just do not like how it has taken over my messaging as well and I have to close it to get to my normal messaging program.
Been a issue for a long long time. Even back on the EVO .

What seems to be happening is it scales and compresses the picture to look good as a tiny thumbnail (to save space) but then blows that up for other uses so it looks bad.

I have gone through that thumbnails folder before and that seems to make perfect sense, but someone dropped the ball there at HTC. Well, I just hope someone realizes the huge mistake that was and corrects it. Thanks coal!!
You can drop a script into your int.d folder to run at boot to prevent the blurred contact pics. I've been using the script for a while. I snatched it from myns old 3.5 rom. Not sure If I can post it because its there script. But if you dl the rom and extract it you can find it.

Last night once we got the JB update, I took the liberty of going to each one of my of my contacts facebook, saving a high res picture of them and then adding it to their contact profile in my phone from the SD card. I'm that guy that has to have good looking pictures for everyone when they call.
With ICS we got a bump in contact icon size. However when you switch roms and your contacts get sync'd to the new rom, their icons are blurry and low res like hell. This was supposedly fixed in Jellybean. So as I stated above I took the time (almost 3 hours actually) to update some 200 contacts.
I just want to let you guys know, don't waste your time, it's not fixed rofl. Googles contact sync feature still completely decimates high res pictures into 3x3 pixelated bogus.
That is all. -___-
All of mine are high res....just dont be in a hurry to sync everything or they will look like crap...Ive tested this with several installs...set up your google contacts when you first boot, nothing else...give the rom time to settle, especially let the sync icon stop..do your google play, whatever while you wait....then setup facebook with "existing contacts"...give it a bit to run and you should have high res contatcs..

I did exactly that when I discovered they didn't sync in high resolution. I did a factory format and started over and they still synced in low res quality.
Thats odd, cause Im sitting here looking at mine and there is a huge difference from ICS....Last night when I only set up Google then played around for awhile I noticed how great they looked...today when I reinstalled and rushed through the setup they looked horrible...reinstalled again and took my time and they look great again....

Only Google....leave everything else alone for a bit...
This pic looked horrible on ICS....(sorry about the dog as a example )
If you want proper hi-res contact photos, use a real JB ROM like CyanogenMod or an AOSP ROM. Contact photos will always be hi-res once you update the photo to a hi-res one.

How they look after being synced
How they look after re-adding the photo after sycing is 100% finished
See what I'm saying? It's doing butchering the contact icons. I'm not sure how you're getting them to sync properly but I've added the pics from the contact app and also at google.com/contacts @[email protected]
Wow, not getting that on mine...sorry dude.....are you stuck on 3g only maybe?? I dunno...Ive got 4g and thats the only other thing I can think of, amount of data downloading...

I uploaded them through both my phone and google.com/contacts, which is where they're pulled from for syncing. You'd think high res icons at the source = high res icons at the destination but I'm not seeing it lol.

you guys should really get hax-sync
its an app that lets you use proper photos from FB and syncs them to the contacts, although google has talked about this before and there is a fix in the works but dont expect it until key lime pie

While Facebook sync is a great option for people who aren't picky about their contact icons, a lot of my friends have pictures of them kissing their girlfriends, or blowing out clouds of smoke or have profile pictures that aren't even them. I'm just confused to why google has said this is fixed, when it is not. I've done a factory wipe multiple times now and cannot get the high resolution pictures to stay high res once synced. Only way to do it is to manually set the picture phone side, and not google side.
If I back up my contacts through Titanium Back up with the high resolution icons, that theoretically would preserve everything, correct?

If you're having issues just use Haxsync like mentioned above..I always used Haxsync but since upgrading to JB all of my photos are Hig Resolution already even after syncing(its even pulling high rez photos from my facebook contacts) So i've yet to re install Haxsync.

It is fixed. If you sync from facebook, go to your people app and just click a contact, back out, then go back in and it resizes automatically... For me at least.

Hi all,
A couple of days ago I switched from Android to Windows Phone 8. So far I really like the OS and especially the Lumia 920. The build quality is superb compared to Android phones. I do have something to whine about. When I upload a photo to Facebook the quality is simply terrible. It has black bars above and under the image, but I think that has to do with the 16:9 aspect. I know that when you upload a picture there will be quality loss but the pictures that I uploaded looked like they were taken on a medieval phone.
If I change the aspect ratio to 4:3, will that get rid of the black bars?
Are you using the Facebook app or sharing from the Photos app?
