Soff vs unlocking cc root - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

Can someone explain the difference between these items? Also what each allows you to do and if it can be done on a stock phone with stock ota upgrade.
Thanks

With s-on you can only flash radios, roms, and kernels. With s-off you can flash radios, pri, roms and kernels. As well as remove the red warning message during first boot. If you are on the latest ota. I don't believe you can use s-off yet.
On a side note I am s-on and have only upgraded the radio and Rom and everything is running awesome with mean Rom 1.5
Sent from my EVO using xda app-developers app

With the new ota, when htcdev unlocked there is no more flashing of radios kernals or splash screens. It's pretty much capable of flashing custom recoveries and that is all.
My EVO Ways

So basically you can do nothing.. What about rooting..

You will need to unlock to flash a recovery image after rooting if u plan on flashing roms or mods still tho.

HTC rezond unlocked boot loader question!

So I had recently rooted and unlocked the boot loader of my rezound. I am running
ICS on it and I am very satisfied. I have a few questions though:
What does s-off really mean?
Is there anyway I can run the phone with a SIM not from Verizon?
Thanks
Mike

S-off just allows us to flash radios pretty much. It is not needed for flashing roms.
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using xda premium
The S in S-off/on just stands for signature. You are turning off signature checking(hence the term s-off) and allowing it to bypass that "feature". HTC did it to assist in making the device "unbrickable". If you keep s-on you can only flash certain things, and other parts need to be flashed via PH98IMG's.
With an s-off device, you are pretty much free to the world. If you have an engineering hboot flashed, you can keep your hboot in a locked status and still flash anything at anytime, but be aware if you attempt to s-on with an engineering hboot, you will brick.
S-off isn't really necessary right now since most of us have latest radios since ics ota hasn't dropped yet. Just wait awhile for s-off as it is still not perfectly safe yet IMO. I will wait awhile. I don't need leaked firmware and radios
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using xda premium
S-off will allow you to do rom installs in one flash without the need to do the PH98IMG.zip through the bootloader and it will also allow full restores from nandroid backups without the need to flash the kernel separately...
As s-off devices get more widespread, I expect the rom developers to switch to this method and stop packaging the kernel separately.
All great responses. thank you for the quick replies. As I look more into these things, I do have to ask.
What are you guys running on your rezounds?
S-off/on? Also are you rooted with a rom?

Iwill probably wont root again until Jelly Bean Update

I lost my root on the last OTA and since there are still no new method to re root on this new version might as well wait till the JB update. I think by Mid August / Sept we can see the new OTA to JB

There is a thread that I used after the OTA by xHausx that brought back r00t for me flawlessly, and I used HTC Dev to unlock the bootloader?

I almost tried this until I read the following ~ I wanted the fixes in the latest OTA:
"Successful in rooting all builds up to 1.13.651.1."
It works for 1.22. It unlocks your phone and installs twrp. You just have to flash chainfires 0.94 superuser to be fully rooted

Wait, this is getting confusing. We should always be able to unlock thru htcdev on this phone no matter the firmware update. Achieving S-OFF is not yet possible on hboot 1.15, so, that's what some of us are hoping to have...

Yes, S-OFF on hboot 1.15 is a work-in-progress, perhaps with a future Lazy Panda exploit.
I believe the original user's requirement was root and unlocked on the current OTA.
These are HTC phones. You can always use HTC dev as a last resort. We will always have root.
Also, don't accept otas if your rooted or ever plan on rooting.

Believe that s-on with the new hboot restricts u as to what is flashable, ie kernels, splash screens, radios. Whereas the old hboot does not. Why some of us are waiting for s-off on current ota/hboot.

I would star here as a reference point. This device is different to the 4g when it comes to all this stuff Start by unlocking your bootloader through htcdev and go from there.

I believe uou first have to unlock your bootloader in order to be able to downgrade. And as far as being s-on you might not be able to flash many of tge available ROMS. Keep in mind that guide is for CDMA by the way

I think I saw in one of the threads you are on cricket? If so your flash is safe using this guide
You need a computer to unlock bootloader. Go to htcdev.com and you follow the guide there then continue with the link i posted. You are CDMA by the way. Also look at the guide this other guy posted by ramjet.

But we do have improved stock roms like ARHD so you might want to try them out.

If your phone is T-Mobile branded and so is the rom (most are T-Mobile based anyway, like speed rom and android Revolution), just enable smart flash in 4ext settings and it should flash without s off. They both have to be T-Mobile branded though.
But s off is worth it you can flash any amaze rom after s off and super cid. Insulated wire works best but tape covered paperclips work too.

If it's unbranded, then he would have to S-OFF. Which is the international or "asian" amaze. I think I have a TELUS amaze but it's unbranded (it came unlocked). So basically my amaze is the wedlock orphan amaze, until I check the original CID. "Aint nobody got time fo dat!"
To the OP, if you're Amaze says T-mobile on it just turn on smartflash and you should be good! You won't be able to flash every thing like CM, or Dark Glass Mod, AOSP based roms, and other non T-mobile roms for now until you S-OFF, and supercid.
Once you do that your amaze is freeeeeee!
So one more noob question, which recovery should I have used? 4ext or twrp? From what I read originally twrp was the way to go, but upon further reading it sounds like I should have used 4ext instead. Is there really that much difference between the two?

Definitely choose 4ext. It has smartflash so you can flash ROMS without being S-OFF. This only applied to T-mobile amazes on T-mobile ROMS. But people who have the amaze are mostly non-T-mobile so it hasn't been of too much use, but it can be for you if you have a T-mobile branded Amaze. Do you have a T-mobile branded amaze? (Amaze with T-mobile stamped on the front). If you do, you can avoid the S-OFF process (it's highly recommended anyway) and flash T-mobile based Roms here. :good:
yup .
but i suggest you to perform s-off bcoz after performing s-off every thing going to be good,
, you
and if you haven't t-mobile or other , i mean if you have to asian than there is no way you must have to perform s-off.
and ya use 4ext recovey.
:good: Hit thanks if I helped you !!! :good: :good: :good:
My phone was a telus phone that I had to get unlocked. So I'm guessing that getting s-off is the only way to go. Should I use the All-in-one program to flash 4ext, or could I use Goo manager? Is there any issue flashing over twrp?
Sent from my HTC Ruby using xda app-developers app
Than flash
4ext and enable smart flash..
And flash it

Because I try to run the ubuntu program and get as far as "booting device into junbuntu? mode" and it just sits there and does nothing.

S-Off Evo V 4g?

I am trying to attempt [S-OFF] with Juopunutbear.
One of Juopunutbear's requirements, is that your on a completely stock rom.
Im having issues finding the lastest stock rom for the evo v 4g ( Virgin Mobiles version evo 3d) . I've searched high and low. I've came close, but it was an old ruu with an old radio.
I would like to flash a stock rom with same radio, if possible. I've checked http://www.shipped-roms.com/ , google.com and many other places.
Any one been in my situation ? Trying to achieve S-OFF with Jbears method on an Evo V 4g.
I'm tired Of sense roms.... I'm on hboot 1.7 and wish to start flashing ASOP!
Thanks in advance for the replies :good:

I unlocked with HTC Dev, installed twrp with SDK, and flashed SuperUser patch for the stock ROM.
Do I still have a stock rom or do I have to do the RUU?
